Chapter 18

Rich knew that even if John and Bill were successful in their attempt to free Holly, there was still the gigantic problem of getting her back to her family. The hope was that Bill and John could somehow obtain Enik's weapon so that they could use it to open a doorway to Holly's reality. However, with no real knowledge of where Enik kept that weapon, and with no idea how to use it, Rich's role in Holly's rescue was to figure out a second way to get her back to the Beige Universe. But that task was beyond his abilities. Therefore, he turned to his longtime friend S'Latch, for help.

"What you pose is an interesting problem, Rich Marshall," said S'Latch.

"That's why I came to you. If anyone besides Enik could figure out how to cross universes and stay there, you can."

"Like Enik, I too have improved my transuniversal technology, even after he stole my data and equipment. But returning Holly to her universe will prove difficult. Unless done at the precise moment, she will die."

But Rich would not give up. He had not come so far to be stopped now. "There has to be a way to help her," he said.

S'Latch explained. "The problem is that Holly is currently in sync with our universe. Although the effect of Enik's machine is temporary, if she returns to her universe before the machine wears off, she would die as quickly as she would if she had been transported to our universe unaltered."

"I can't accept that. We have to be able to do something," Rich repeated. He would not fail Holly again, even if she were not his Holly.

"Humans are so impatient. I said the problem was difficult, not impossible." S'Latch then gave him two devices. "Take these. Both are made of the fourth dimensional nodes that can exist in both universes. The first will open a portal to Holly's dimension. The second will permanently reverse the effects of Enik's machine allowing her to enter the portal. But be warned. The device only has enough power to be used one time. If you miss, you will not have another chance."

Rich took the devices and S'Latch explained how they worked. The human thanked S'Latch, and headed toward the pit.
