A decade before the events of Fablehaven take place, Warren and Vanessa are inducted into the same group (North) at the same time. By the end of the meeting, they become each other's official partners. Unfortunately, they are not exactly getting along. This is especially problematic for Warren, who has fallen helplessly in love.
To me, it makes the most sense that Coulter Dixon introduces Warren to the Knights. Stan and Ruth can't, because they are caretakers, Gloria and Hank can't, because they are going to be undercover. Tanu and Vanessa are too young.
