Kyle pulled on his mother's skirt as she got him out of the car. "Mama? Mom, we can see Stan now?"
Sheila had been so overjoyed Stan had pulled through and that Kyle had helped in some way. "Sweetie, we're going to pick out a gift for Stan, remember? We'll see him this afternoon."
"Ohh. Smart, Mama." Kyle looked around in awe as they entered the toy store. "Mama, me too?"
"Yes, you too. You don't even know, do you? You were such a big help to get Stanley better." Sheila didn't like to think of what state Stan would still be in if it weren't for Kyle coming to visit him.
"I'm a big helper! Dr. Kyle saved the day!" Kyle hopped around happily, eyes looking all over the toy store. He has to pick out the perfect gift for his best buddy and him.
Sheila rushes to catch up with her son. "Ok Dr Kyle the big helper. What toy do you want, and what toy should we get Stan?"
Kyle starts to pick up and set down some dinosaur toys. Stan liked dinos! But which one? "Five, Mama! We'll get Stan five dinos!"
"Kyle, sweetie I'm happy you're so generous but be reasonable. Maybe one thing for each of you." She led him over to another shelf of single dinosaurs.
"No! Dinos! All the dinos! I want this!" Kyle grabs a green truck and holds it out for his mom.
Sheila takes a deep breath. "Kyle, one thing each, or we'll leave the toy store and go home if you don't listen."
Kyle's eyes fill with tears. No, he had to get his best buddy something or he'd be really sad. He grabs a red Dino that kind of looks like a bat. He's not sure what kind it is but he was sure Stan would know, he liked dinosaurs more anyway. "This one for Stan?" Then spots a big box with twenty dinosaurs in it for $45. "Oohhhh Mama! Mama this! This!"
"Kyle, one thing. There's twenty things in there. One. Each."
Kyle smiles at his mom, holding a finger up. Trying to be smart. "One box Mama."
Sheila shakes her head, oh this kid. "One thing. You don't want to show up empty handed to visit Stan." Sheila didn't want to bring out the big threat, but she needed Kyle to behave. "Or we could not go visit Stan at all."
"Nooo! Stan! Staaannn!" Kyle grabs the first red dinosaur and holds it up.
"Okay, perfect. Get one thing for you too, Kyle. Then let's go." Sheila slipped the dinosaur in her shopping cart.
Kyle grabs the same toy for himself and throws it in the cart. He's not as into dinos as Stan but he wanted to have matching toys! That way their dinosaurs could be brothers like he and Stan were.
Stan was upset to still be in the hospital even if his parents seemed happy about it. He settled against his pillows. They took most of his ouchy things out, but he still has to have daily breathing treatments and tests. It left him frustrated and cranky. "Mom, I don't like it!" He cried to Sharon, yanking at his mask.
Sharon pulls his little hands down and hands him some blocks. "I know you don't, sweetie but we need to get you really strong so you can go home! You want to be really strong when you go back home don't you?"
"No, I don't like it!" Stan grabbed at the mask on his face and yanked it again. "It tastes icky!"
"Stan, you need to behave and keep the mask on. It's giving you important medicine. It's just like your nebulizer at home. Just breathe it in and you'll feel better." Sharon sighed but couldn't help but smile and hug her son close, happy he was back even if he was showing his defiant little attitude.
"No!" Stan pushed his mom off and started to cry. "I don't like it here, mommy."
Sharon hugs him again. "I know you don't, baby. I don't want to be here either. It's just for a little while more. Soon we'll be home, okay?" She kisses his cheek.
"My throat hurts and my mouth tastes icky, Mommy." Stan whined.
Nurse Emily entered, she had pulled some strings and got to have Stan as a patient again. "Stan, sweetie you had a tube in your mouth, like a great big straw to help you breathe. You're going to have a sore throat and yucky taste in your mouth for a few days."
Stan straightened up a little when Emily came in. "Okayyy." He still cried.
Sharon cannot help but chuckle. She knows the last thing her son wants is to follow orders from a doctor or nurse, but he can't help but listen to this nice, pretty one. Stubborn boy!
Emily walked over to Stan to take his vitals. Good blood pressure, not like the last one she took that nearly gave her a heart attack. Breath still congested but that's what his treatments were for. So happy to have him back even if he cried and caused trouble for his mom. "How are you today, Sharon?" Emily said, chuckling a bit as she patted Stan on his back to calm him down.
"Very good, Emily, thank you. It feels so good to see Stan so much more like himself. He's moving around, talking, crying. Asking for cuddles. And of course, trying to get out of the things he's still attached to. I'm glad I have that now to worry over instead of, well, how he was two nights ago." Sharon smiled, even as she wiped her tired eyes.
Emily rubbed Stan's back and shushed him to calm him down. "I don't want to scare you but yes you didn't know how close you came. You're a very lucky little boy, Stan. I want you to say that."
"I...lucky." Stan sniffed.
"Never forget that." Emily said more to Sharon than Stan, but the boy finally stopped crying.
Tears fill Sharon's eyes again. She can only nod as she scoops her son into her arms. He was so close to... yet here he was, her precious son, alive and moving and talking again. What would she do if she ever lost him? "Emily, I don't know how I can ever thank you; you've been such a positive and kind presence the past few days. I don't know where we'd be without you."
Stan pointed to his mom. "Miss Emily. Rub mommy's back?"
Emily giggled, "only with her permission."
Sharon laughs through her tears. "That would be welcomed, thank you. You have such good ideas, Stanley."
Emily played along, rubbing Sharon on the back like she had done to Stan, noticing the tension in her shoulders. "Tell your mommy she's so lucky to have you and she has a great son."
"Mommy lucky, I lucky, Daddy lucky, Kyle lucky, Miss Emily lucky." Stan laughed along even though he still had his mask on. His expression darkened a bit. "Someone not lucky."
"Oh yeah? Who?" Emily joked back. Probably Dr Ross, that dick.
"Kenny." Stan said simply.
Sharon gives him a nervous look as she hugged him tighter. "Why- why do you say that honey?"
"Who's Kenny?" Emily said, still laughing and playing along.
"Kenny's still stuck in the violet place." Stan said, leaning against his mom.
"Look at you smart boy, little kids don't say words like 'violet'" Emily said, still laughing at but.
"No!" Stan started to cry again. "Kenny's stuck there, and no one can play with him. He can't play, Mommy. Why can't I play with him?" Stan continued to cry.
Sharon looks down at her son sitting on her lap. "Honey, I don't understand what you're trying to say."
Stan starts to cry again. "Kenny can get Kyle to rescue him like me?"
"What's that love? I thought I heard Sheila tell me something." Sharon thinks for a moment before putting Stan carefully back in his bed "Let me talk to Kyle's Mommy okay? And see if- if Kyle might be able to help. Emily, I hate to ask but can you look after Stan for five minutes? I need to make a phone call."
"Sure, Sharon." Emily gets down to Stan's level. "You want to sing your ABCs with me? Once we sing it three times you can take your mask off. How about it?" Stan nodded at Emily with big eyes.
Sharon dips out of the room and goes to a secluded area with a bench and snack machine. Stan talking about Kenny creeped her out more than she wanted to admit. Something was nagging at the back of her mind. She had to be sure and called up Sheila.
Sheila was at home wrapping the gift for Stan when she picked up her phone. "Hi Sharon, how's Stanley?"
"He's doing good, doing good. He's with his nurse friend now. Sheila, I hate to ask... and I don't want to come off as crazy but. did Kenny recently….die?" Sharon asked.
Sheila almost dropped the phone as tears came to her eyes. "I told Randy; you were there but I thought you didn't hear. But we were in the waiting room for Stanley and super worried. Both boys went to the hospital the same night. I couldn't think if Kyle had lost two friends at once." Sheila took a moment to compose herself. "I'm so happy Stanley is doing better."
Sharon's eyes filled with tears. "Oh no, I'm so sorry Sheila, have you heard any news on Kenny? Should I call Carol?"
"Well, his funeral is on Saturday. But we didn't want to trouble you. I had been making food for the McCormick's as well as your family. We also put up a collection for Kenny's funeral. You know while Kyle was at daycare before we would visit Stan in the afternoons."
Sharon sits down and buried her face in her hands. "I feel so awful for them. Both boys went to the hospital that same day and only Stanley... How tragic. How exactly did Kenny pass?"
"He and his siblings were playing out front and he ran into the street and was hit by a car. He died at the hospital later that night." Sheila sniffed once again, feeling bad she had been attending to Carol that night when Sharon was also in that same ER with her son.
"That's so sad. I'm sorry, I forgot you even told me about it. I feel almost guilty that my boy is doing better but the McCormick's lost theirs. The only reason I ask is because Stan, he told me- never mind. Never mind. Thank you for telling me."
"Oh, let Stanley know Kyle's coming to visit this afternoon. I have to drop off some things to Carol, food and supplies and then we'll be there around four? Sound good?"
"Yes, that sounds good, Stan can't wait to see Kyle again."
"Ok Sharon bye then." Sheila hung up in a hurry and buried her hands to cry. Hopefully, Kyle hadn't overheard.
A few hours later, after lunch, Sharon looked up from her phone and smiled at her son. "Stan, honey, someone special is here to visit you!"
Stan was sulking in bed but perked up at a visitor. "Who is it Mommy?"
"Take a guess."
"Kyle!" Stan jumped up excitedly, almost falling out of bed.
Sharon jumped up to stop his fall. "Careful there Stan, we don't want to hurt ourselves, do we? Yes, Kyle is here. Want me to let him and his mother in?"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah!" Stan bounced up and down in bed.
Sharon shakes her head as a knock is heard at the door. "Come in! I think someone is happy to see you, Kyle!"
Kyle runs in. "Stan! Stan! You're better!"
Sheila entered with two gifts. One in blue paper and one in green.
"Kyle!" Stan reaches out his hands to his best friend, Sharon again making sure he doesn't fall.
"Stan! I got you a dino Stan!" Kyle said, holding his hand.
"Shhh bubbe it was supposed to be a surprise." Sheila places one gift in front of Stan and hands the other one to Kyle.
"Oh, oh yeah. Um, I dunno what it is." Kyle shrugged but smiled at Stan. "The blue one is yours, mine is green!"
Stan excitedly tears off the paper. "Ooh a pterodactyl, the only flying reptile! Mommy, open it! Mommy!"
"Yes honey, I will. Why don't we see what gift Kyle has for himself okay?" Sharon took the box and looked over how to start opening it.
"Ok!" Stan bounces up and down in bed as he waits for Sharon to take his pterodactyl out of the box.
Kyle tore the paper off his own gift and held it up. "Look Stan! Look! I gots the same one! Cus they're brothers. Like we're brothers."
"Yay brothers! Yaaay!" Stan bounces in bed again. "Open it again mommy! What did Kenny get?"
Sharon can't look at her son as she starts to take the pterodactyl out of the box. "Honey, Kenny isn't here anymore. You can't see him, right?"
Stan stops bouncing. "Oh yeah. I see Kenny, but he doesn't want to play anymore. He won't say why but he told me to play with Kyle and not him." Stan sulks again, and sniffs. "Kyle you gotta rescue Kenny. He's still violet."
"Oh, Stanley. Poor thing." Sheila sniffed and patted him on the head.
"What do you mean, Stan?" Kyle gets closer and grabs Stan's hand. "Mama? Can I sit in bed with Stan?"
"Sure, bubbe but be careful, Stan's still sick." As Sheila picks him up, she looks at Sharon. "Did you tell him?"
Sharon gives her a guilty look and shakes her head no.
Stan scoots closer to Kyle, playing with his pterodactyl. "Kyle, there's this scary place. I was there with Kenny, but I was scared, and he was sad. He told me not to play with him and kept saying go away."
Kyle holds his own pterodactyl closer. "Really? Oh wow! What was it like? Is Kenny okay?"
Sharon puts a hand on Stan's shoulder. "Stanley honey... let's not talk about this scary place anymore, okay? You're here and are feeling better and Kenny…well Kenny."
"Kenny's in heaven, boys." Sheila offered.
Stan shook his head no. "Kenny said fuck off and dead. What's a fuck off and dead? Heaven is scary and sad. Kenny's so sad." Stan starts to cry again as Kyle puts an arm around him.
"Yes, Kenny is up high in the clouds and... making sure you both are happy and having fun." Sharon says quickly trying to comfort her son.
"Language, young man." Sheila says in a low voice.
Sharon puts hands on each side of Stan's face. "Stanley, baby now look at me- look at me. Kenny is happy and in a better place."
"Kenny's not happy, he's fuck off and dead." Stan cried.
"Stanley, we do not say the F word!" Sheila radishes her voice a little more.
"Dead?"
"No! The other one! That is a naughty word!" Sheila continues despite Sharon glaring at her.
Stan keeps crying.
Sharon holds her son close. "You can say dead just not…. baby I know this is confusing to you. But you will no longer be seeing Kenny, okay? Something happened and you can no longer play with him. He had to go with god."
"Why not? I was with him. Why can't he play with us? He deserves a pterodactyl, the only flying reptile. He's so sad and scared." Stan continued to cry.
Sharon hugs him close. It sure was easier to explain death to him after his goldfish died a few months ago but a friend he played with every day? Stan is crying so hard he starts hyperventilating in his mother's arms.
"Oh no-Stanley no! Calm down sweetie, calm down." Sharon hugs him close and bounces him gently.
Kyle backs away scared on the bed as his own mother picks him up. "Stan? Stan? Mama, what's wrong with him?"
"Should I call the nurse again, Sharon?" Sheila felt bad she had upset Stanley this badly when he was doing so much better. "Come on sweetie, let's get Stan's doctor."
"We gonna get strings?" Kyle asks.
"Hopefully not." Sheila presses the nurse call button and waits.
Emily entered. "Hi there, what's going on, Stan? Sharon?"
"He just started hyperventilating! Please help!" Sharon cries holding onto her son.
Emily pulls out the oxygen mask and breathing treatment again. "Stanley, look at me. We're going to give you this medicine to make you better, ok sweetheart?"
She places the mask on Stan and sits at the edge of the bed, rubbing his back and watching his vitals again. "Breathe in and count to ten, then breathe out again. Sharon, you want to hold his hands and count with him?"
Sharon nods and sits him on her lap as she grabs his hand. "Sweetie, sweetie look at me. Let's count, okay? Want to show Emily how to count? One-two-three."
Stan looks between his mom, Kyle and Emily trying to listen. "One, two, tree."
"Good job... four-five-six."
"Foor, five, six." Stan stared into his mom's eyes, starting to relax a bit.
"You're doing a good job Stan, very good job. What comes next? Seven-eight-nine... and what's the last number honey?"
"Tennnn." Stan cried, letting the breath out. "Good." Said Emily. "Do it again, sweetheart." "One, two, three."
"Four-five-six. You can do it sweetie." Sharon hugs her son.
Stan looked over at Kyle, wondering if he was scaring him. "Foor, five, six. Kyle?"
Kyle is still hesitant, not liking that Stan looked and sounded different now with this weird mask thing.
"It's just another string, bubbe. It's helping him get better." Sheila said, feeling bad for both a Stan and Sharon.
"Ohh. Strings make Stan better." Kyle frowns but wants to be strong for his buddy. "Put me down, mama, Ill count with Stan too. One-two-three, A-B-C!"
Sheila goes over and sits Kyle down on the bed across from Stan. "Yes, bubbe help him count too."
Stan reached out his other hand to grab Kyle's.
Maybe he got sick again because he was in trouble for talking about Kenny and dead.
"You got it Stan. One- three- I see me! Two four- I want more!" Sharon relived to see her son starts to look better.
Emily had a stethoscope on Stan's back. He was starting to sound better. "We'll have to double check with the doctor, but I have a hunch his asthma is more sensitive now, Sharon. Stan, are you feeling better, sweetheart?"
Stan nodded his head. Scared by what his favorite nurse said.
Sharon squeezes her son's hand, not liking this new information but knowing she has no control over it. Her eyes filled with tears again.
"Kyle?" Stan said. He wanted to talk about Kenny and fuck off and dead again, but he didn't want to get in trouble again. He looked down at his new pterodactyl toy, and slowly opened and closed its wings. "I'm sorry Kyle."
"Stan, you're my best buddy. Our dinos best buddies. Strings help you, okay?" Kyle sat next to him and held up his pterodactyl.
"Strings?" Stan asked, leaning his head on Kyle's shoulder.
Kyle nods, enthusiastically and points to Stan. "Mouth strings! Arm strings! Heart strings! They're special medicine."
"They taste icky and are itchy." Stan looked down for a moment at his mom talking to Miss Emily. "Maybe Kenny needs strings so we can rescue him." He whispered.
"Ohh, yeah! Mom, let's get strings for Kenny!"
"Boys, we need to talk about something important." Sheila sat down next to Stan and Kyle. "Ok, so sometimes strings and medicine can't help. Sometimes someone gets so sick that nothing helps them. That's called dying. Kenny can't be helped anymore. He's dead. You won't see him anymore." She teared up again, putting a hand on each boy.
Stan was even more scared, looking at all his 'strings' now. Would he die and not talk if these were taken away? No wonder mommy and Miss Emily would put it back on him when he pulled.
Sharon gets to feet, covering her eyes as the tears come. "I'm sorry, excuse me." She grabs her purse and leaves the room in a hurry.
Stan looked down at his equipment, made sure his mask was clamped on. "Kyle, you need strings?"
Kyle smiles. "No. You gots long strings Stan."
"If you get sick Kyle, I'll share my strings. Even if it hurts a whole lot." He hugs Kyle.
Kyle returned Stan's hug. "What games did you play with Kenny?"
Stan pats his pillow, encouraging Kyle to lay next to him. "It was dark, and Kenny was hiding, he was running away. I thought he wanted to play hide and seek or tag. He got mad and said I'd dead if I played with him."
Kyle looked confused. "Why not? Why doesn't he wanna play? I wanna play tag with Kenny. He is good at tag."
Stan shrugged. "Maybe when I go to sleep, I'll play tag with Kenny. I keep seeing him at night. Why doesn't he come in the day to play?"
"Cus he's stuck in the scary place?" Kyle offered.
"I don't know. When I was in there, when I would try to play with Kenny, he would get mad at me. He told me to fuck off and play with you. Kyle? Why were you so shiny?"
Kyle looks down. "Huh? I'm not shiny, Stan.
"No in the violet place. Kenny was in the dark place, and you were shiny. Kenny kept hiding and told me to play with you. It would be dark and scary. You were shiny like...a nightlight."
Kyle was still confused. "I'm not shiny no more Stan. I look the same. You look the same. Maybe Kenny needs a flashlight for the violet place."
"You were the flashlight!" Stan grew frustrated trying to explain.
"How? I'm just me. Just Kyle! I am a boy not a flashlight, duh!" Kyle giggled at Stan.
Stan closed his eyes for a second and thought back. In the violet place he would search for Kenny. He was scared and lonely. "Kenny?"
"Stan don't come over here. Go the other way. Kyle's over there, go to Kyle. Kenny would yell at him.
"I would play hide and seek with Kenny but when I found him, he would be mad and sad. He would always tell me to play with you instead. You weren't there until you were. You were... shiny."
"Shiny like... a superhero? Am I a superhero Mom?" Kyle now looked up at his mom.
Sheila was very uncomfortable but let the boys talk, figuring it was good for them both. "I think...Kenny was trying to protect you, Stan. He wanted you to get healthy and play with Kyle."
"But why didn't Kenny want to get healthy to play with Kyle too?" Stan asked.
"He couldn't, he was too sick." Sheila explained again.
Kyle frowned now. "I thought Kenny liked to play with us. I like him more n' Cartman. I don't want Kenny to be in violet place, I wanna save him! I save you Stan. I wanna save Kenny, Mom!"
"Bubbe, Kenny couldn't be saved. The doctors couldn't make him better. That's what dead means. He can't breathe or have a heartbeat anymore. He was too sick. No one could save him." Sheila went to hug both boys.
"Oh no, poor Kenny." Kyle started to cry. "I wish we could help."
Stan was even more scared now. "I can't breathe sometimes. Will I died?"
"Oh no! Don't died Stan!" Kyle hugs him tightly now.
"No, no Stan bubbe you're not going to die. I mean you almost, but the doctors made you better." Sheila points to heart monitor. "You're very much alive, Stan."
"Mama, I gonna died?" Kyle asks.
Sheila thinks for a moment. "Well, everyone dies one day. Neither of you boys will die until you're very old men. It was just different for Kenny. He was hiding because he cared about you boys."
Kyle felt confused, Stan said Kenny was in violet place, but their moms said Kenny was looking after them. How if he said he didn't like the hiding place he was at? "I care about Kenny too. I wish he won't be hiding. Kenny is cool and fun."
"Kenny cares and wants you to be healthy and okay. He wanted Stan to be careful, which is why he was hiding. Both of you be careful. That's why Kenny wanted to hide. He was trying to be careful."
Stan stared at his EKG, wondering if it unplugged would he be in the violet place again. "Mommy tells me to be careful and I tell her to be careful."
"Kenny smart, telling us to be careful. We gotta be careful huh, Mama?" Kyle hugs his mom back.
"Yes, be careful and be safe. We want both of you to be healthy." Sheila hugs both boys, and plants a kiss on both their foreheads, which Stan backs away from.
"Where's my mommy?" Stan asks.
"Let me call her, Stan, bubbe." Sheila pulled out her cell phone.
Sharon sat at a bench down the hall, looking out the window. She needed to get her emotions under control. She felt awful that the McCormick's lost their son. Why did God allow her son to live but not Kenny? Why was Stan so insistent he saw him? So many thoughts in her head. She just wants to take Stan home and things to be normal again. She doesn't want to tell Stan he is wrong, or he should be afraid, but she was just confused herself. On top of that now Stan's asthma could be worse. Both she and him can't catch a break.
She looked down at her phone and picked up.
"Hi, Sharon. How are you feeling?" Sheila said, happy Sharon got a little bit of a break, but she still looks worn out.
"Confused and upset, Stan asking for me." Sharon said.
"Mommmyyy!" Stan could be heard crying in the background.
"How did you know?" Sheila said. "Shhh Stanley. Your mommy is coming."
"I'll be right there." Sharon sighed and got up, heading back to Stan's room.
Stan had been crying but smiled when he saw Sharon come back. "Mommy I be careful, and you be careful and Kyle be careful. Like Kenny wants."
Sharon kisses his forehead. "I'm happy to hear that sweetie. Mommy just had to get some fresh air. Thank you for watching them, Sheila. I'm just a little torn up about things. With the news about Kenny. How were the boys?"
"We had a discussion about Kenny. I think they got it." Sheila said, picks up Kyle and holding him close.
Stan looked at his heart monitor, still afraid, not sure of it or being disconnected from it. "I won't pull my strings anymore, mommy. Unless Kyle needs one."
Sharon started to tuck him back in bed. "Thank you, sweetie, that's very good of you. These are your strings, not for Kyle. Your strings make you strong so you can go home, understand?"
"I'll be careful, mommy. Because Kenny wants me and Kyle to be careful." Stan nodded and yawned.
Sharon froze while tending to her son. "That's-that's nice of Kenny to do that."
"Mommy? Did I not die?" Stan asked.
"No sweetie, you have been here the entire time. You just had to have a big sleep to get better."
"But Kenny die?"
"Yes sweetie. You won't be able to see him or play with him anymore, now take a nap, okay?"
"Everybody dies. Kenny said it's not my time." Stan started to close his eyes.
"He's right, it's not your time. You are going to grow up and have such a happy life and get to do so many things!" Sharon smiles sadly as she waved to Sheila and Kyle who were getting ready to go.
"Was Kenny bad? His time?" Stan asked again.
"He wasn't bad, it was simply his time. It's not for us to decide. Sometimes people die even if they are good people. But God wants to select some people to help keep others safe." She handed Stan his toys.
"Kenny wants me and Kyle to be careful, but I'm still sad." Stan started to close his eyes.
"I'm sad too, baby. I'm happy you are here but it is still sad that Kenny is not." Sharon said, smoothing down his hair.
"I sleep, I see Kenny again. The violet place is sad, but I tell him we're careful and not be sad anymore. I don't want him to hide anymore." Stan finally closed his eyes and fell asleep.
Emily came back from her rounds. "I think the doctor will send him home with stronger asthma medication along with an epi pen."
"Okay, okay. How do you use an epi pen? I don't want to injure my son if this happens again." Sharon asked worriedly.
"We'll give you training before you leave the hospital." Emily checks on Stan one more time, who has his arms around his pterodactyl and Ruffy. "You're doing so much better. Good night sweet angel." She fluffs his hair a bit. "Goodnight Sharon. You really do have a good boy."
Sharon can't help it; she gets up to give Emily a hug. "I cannot begin to thank you for everything. You've been so kind to my family and so gentle with my son. If only you could be around any other time he may wind up in the ER. You truly have been an angel. I cannot thank you enough."
Emily returns the hug. "I'm happy to take care of your son and you. I'm so happy he's better now and will get to go home." She slips out of the room after touching Stan's hair one more time.
The clock roles over to midnight. Stan opened his eyes to see his mom sleeping next to him on a cot. Mommy was sad and he was still afraid, he didn't want to pull his strings and died himself. He looked up at the monitor and the dim green glow. He noticed another glow, violet this time. "Kenny? Are you here to play?" Stan asked quietly.
Kenny shook his head. He went over and stood next to Sharon, looking over her. "Kyle's mommy wants us to be careful. You want us to be careful. We're careful." Stan said, not moving and holding his toys. Kenny's eyes narrowed. "Mommy?" Stan said meekly. "Mommy, Kenny wants something."
Sharon stirred in her sleep. "Stanley? Go back to sleep, you have to get better."
"Mommy, Kenny wants something." Stan said, not moving. His eyes followed Kenny walking to the corner of the room, closer to his mom's bed.
"You wanna play now Kenny?" Stan asked again.
Sharon lifted her head and yawned. "Baby, I don't see anyone. Please, mommy is tired and so are you. Let's go back to sleep, okay?"
Kenny raised an eyebrow. He got closer to Sharon. "Kenny no!" Stan said, knowing if Kenny tagged you that meant you're dead. "No Kenny, leave my mommy alone. Want my pterodactyl? The only flying reptile?"
"Stanley, don't yell, it's the middle of the night. Go back to sleep, it's been a long day."
"Mommy, Kenny came to visit. Mommy he's right there. Kenny, how did you escape the violet place? You're still shiny. Kenny? Kenny?" Stan's little petrified voice cut through the dark.
Kenny came over, stood at the end of Stan's bed looking over. Stan shrank back into his bed. "Mommy, Kenny's not happy."
Sharon lifts her head and grabs her son's hand. "Stanley, nobody is here. Just you and me. Maybe you're just having a bad dream."
Kenny moved closer so he was standing between Stan and Sharon's bed. He pointed to Stan's heart monitor and then pointed to his wrist like he had a watch there. "Kenny. Don't die me. Kenny? You want my strings? Mommy I'm scared."
Sharon kisses his cheek. "Stanley, go back to sleep. Daddy and Shelly are coming by tomorrow and we want to be awake when they come by don't, we?"
"No, Kenny. Be careful. Go to Kyle. Isn't that what you told me? Go to Kyle." Kenny nodded and disappeared. The room was dark and quiet for a moment before Stan began to cry. "Mommmmyy."
Sharon gets up and sits Stan on her lap. "You're okay Stanley, you're okay. I'm right here, it's okay."
Kenny appeared in the Broflovski household. He casually strolled around. Kyle had the nicest house of his friends. He made his way up to Kyle's room, looking over the sleeping boy.
Kyle is currently sleeping with a smile on his face, holding his new pterodactyl under one arm.
Kenny leaned down, whispering in his friend's ear. "You want to visit the violet place with me?"
Kyle does a stretch and turns on his side. His face scrunches up but he sleeps on.
Kenny doesn't touch Kyle but puts his hand near him, putting him in a trance. Kyle opens his eyes and gets up, dropping the pterodactyl on the floor. "Go find your parents." Kenny tells him.
Kyle nods and goes to the direction of his parents' room. He slowly opens their door.
"Wake your parents up." Kenny commands.
Kyle goes over to his mom's side. "Mom? Mama, wake up." He says quietly.
Kenny places his hand almost around Kyle's wrist. "Ready?"
Kyle nods, grasping his hand. "Ready."
From Sheila's perspective it looked like her son needed her in the middle of the night. She woke to the sound of his voice and found him collapsed on the floor of the bedroom. In a panic she called 911 and woke her husband. Kenny had grabbed Kyle's hand and yanked him into a place beyond time and space. Another plunge into darkness.
"Welcome." Kenny said gruffly.
Kyle looked around to see he was floating. "What? Where am I? Mama? Daddy!"
Here Kenny could speak better. "Welcome to the violet place. Don't worry I pulled you down here on purpose. You'll be fine. Stan ended up here accidentally."
"I- what? I wanna go home Kenny!" Kyle kicked away, trying to fight Kenny off.
"When you're ready you can, I just hope you can take me with you." Kenny looked at Kyle sadly.
