"I couldn't sleep." Jane replied.
"So you sit outside?" He said, giving her an incredulous look.
Jane gave a small chuckle before turning to face the horizon again. "It helps me think."
There had been a change in their dynamic. She no longer thought him to be this treacherous rat bent on ruining her life. Instead, she'd grown to enjoy his company, much to her surprise.
Gunther strode towards Jane and sat down beside her, his arm lightly grazing hers as he settled down. There was a slight flutter in her chest at the momentary contact, an unusual reaction that left Jane a bit confused.
"So what has you so plagued that it can only be pondered during midnight hours?" He asked playfully.
"What has you so restless that you go around stalking girls in the middle of the night."
"Wait, there are girls around here? Where?" He asked, looking around.
"Ha-ha, you're very funny." Jane responded, her tone laced with sarcasm.
"I'm well aware... but thank you for the compliment." Gunther said, giving a theatrical bow. "Now... about these girls-"
Jane gave him a punch to the arm, a smile on her face as she did so. Although their teasing was not as ruthless as it once was, it still hadn't lost its sharp touch. The witty remarks they hurled at each other still cut, only now there was a playful edge to them, an indicator that they weren't complete adversaries anymore.
A moment passed before Gunther spoke. "Are you nervous about the tournament?"
Jane nodded. From her peripheral vision, she could see that he was looking at her.
"I as well..." he said, turning to look at the ground far below. "But we should be alright as long as we try our best."
"You're right..." Jane said. "... Just try not to cheat this time, okay beef-brain?"
"Me? Cheat? I would never!" Gunther responded, his hand on his chest as he feigned honesty.
Jane laughed. The tournament that she and Gunther were to compete in commenced in three days time, and with each day that passed, Jane grew nervous. Now that Gunther had become a new and very inconvenient distraction for her, her ability to concentrate during sparring sessions had waned, so much so that she was losing to him without him having to cheat. She couldn't understand why he had this effect on her, but whatever the reason, she just hope it'd go away before the tournament commenced. Because the last thing she wanted was to lose the tournament over something as trivial as him.
