Chapter 12:Sports Festival Begins/The Second Assassin Appears
Beep Beep Beep!
Oh not again.
BEEP BEEP BEEP!
"Neo, stop that! I'm up!"
"It's not me! You fixed it yesterday!"
BEEP BEEP BEEP!
I get up and begin to stomp on the clock. "Why?(SLAM) Did.(SLAM) I(SLAM) Fix(SLAM) YOU! "
Today was the day of the sports festival. For two weeks, Tokoyami and I had trained hard for this event. It was safe to say we weren't alone because due to the excessive amount of people this year the event was no longer split into three like the other years. Instead of three different stadiums to hold each year of class, the event was a three day event. A day for each year.
Meaning everyone was going to watch the first years. That includes the pros that would normally just watch the third years.
My morning routine goes into effect. Shower, brush, water plants, eat breakfast. I had already been up for an hour so the alarm only ever served as a reminder of when a normal person would wake up. The nightmares made sure of that.
I look down at the key chain dangling down my neck. Hop was right when she said it was practically indestructible. It had taken several attacks from her and didn't even look scratched. In fact, every morning he would now grab the key chain for something to comfort him whenever he had a panic attack.
Luna would be so afraid if she knew I had them. Hop didn't tell her about it and no one else other than Chris knew about them. A few classmates knew I had nightmares but that was pretty much it.
Also, my request to see a school therapist has been in production for weeks now but with everything going on they wanted a pro hero to do it for them. Since there was no pro therapist it would take a while to figure that out.
A notification sound was heard from my watch. I looked down to see that Iida had texted the group chat.
Iida: Leo, everyone is already here. It is not that you are late but if you could get here soon that would look good on all of us.
I use a clothes beam before I leave and begin to stroll towards UA. It would be in my best interest if my stamina were saved for the festival.
Luna had already been dropped off by Chris, who also dropped off some ambassadors who will spectate with other teachers. Luna would be in the crowd but Aizawa told me not to worry since the whole building only let in heroes. She will be in good hands till I get there.
The streets were mostly empty. Most of the crowd was already at UA. That or inside watching it on their televisions. A few pros patrolled around the street, all of which waved at me when they recognized my uniform.
The lack of people was nice but something besides that felt off. My senses were on high alert which only happened whenever I was in battle. Could the nerve of fighting soon be a part of it.
Whatever the reason, my body began to pick up the pace.
(3 Hours Later)
Luna had been directed to a seat towards the top of the stands. Across the arena, she could see the booths which the first years would be seated in. However, Leo had said that he would sit next to her whenever he wasn't participating so he could spend time with her.
She had two people she wanted to win. Tokoyami and Leo. The bird headed teen had already swung around to check on her along with his friends Tsu and Shoji. They said Leo was on his way.
But something didn't seem right.
"You seem nervous. Is everything alright?"
She turned to see a blond woman with yellow reptile eyes looking at her. She was in one of the few seats behind her and was wearing a black hoodie and long jeans making it look as if she was trying to avoid detection from others.
"I'm just worried about my brother. A friend said he left his apartment hours ago. It's just he hasn't appeared anywhere and the event is about to begin." Luna replied. "And it's not just like he is watching it, he is an active competitor in the festival and no one in his entire class has seen him."
"Oh, so he attends UA." the blonde hero asked. Luna nodded and looked down at the students who were being introduced down at the tunnels.
"He attends 1A as the oldest one, him being eighteen."
This confused the women but after some thought it made sense. The kid must not have been to previous high school so he would have to start from the bottom. Then it reminded her of something.
The pro had looked through the records of the new students at UA. The USJ attack had drawn in her attention and her status had given her access to them. The only one who was eighteen was the new quirkless member from that Universe 1 she heard so much about.
"Are you from that Universe 1 I heard so much about?" She asked her attention quietly to not draw attention to the girl and herself. Many people here wanted to see how a fighter from another universe would fight and she was no exception.
Luna looked around to see if anyone had heard before slightly nodding. The woman gave a slight smile before bringing a finger to her lips. "Your secret is safe with me."
"Attention audience! We have some good news and some bad news!"
They look up at the announcer's voice, both having a bad feeling about this.
(3 Hours Earlier)
There was a commotion ahead of me and due to my enhanced hearing every word spoken made it to me clearly. All the loud music at the bar and the Present Mic training (Realized I spelt it wrong last time, derp) paid off incredibly.
"Freeze, villain!"
"Get back!"
"Is this all you heroes have to offer? My master needs strong adversaries, not weak children!"
Before any other word could be spoken, a loud crack was heard and a dark figure was seen flying towards the empty street to my right. I recognized them as a hero who patrolled these parts. Blood seeped from his face and his arms appeared to be broken.
I quickly lept into action and jumped onto the street and caught him in my arms, bridal style. Up close, you could see his uniform was torn up and several teeth were missing. He slowly turned to me.
"Kid, evacuate the area. There is a powerful villain down the street." his voice was weak. Even though he was practically broke, his first concern was any citizen nearby.
"You are in no condition to fight. Are there any other heroes combating them?"
He thought for a moment. "There were a few. However they had quickly been taken out. All the higher up pros are either watching the festival or are too far away to help. Could you do me a favor and call the police? They are our best hope."
"That won't be necessary."
My head whips to the sound of a new voice. Walking down the street, a cloaked man was walking towards us. Two unconscious heroes were being dragged behind him. His cloak appeared to be on fire but he had little interest in it.
"I had intel that a UA student was making his way through here. Judging by your uniform, I'd say you are him." The man threw the heroes to the sidewalk and grabbed the hood of his cloak. With a tear, the cloth was thrown into the wind.
What revealed itself was a man in black spike jeans and no shirt. A tattoo was on his chest that read 'Brotherhood'. His arms appeared to have been made of a black rock and judging from the damage behind him, they appeared to be his main weapon.
The bald man gave a toothy grin. "Green hair, fast speed, are you this Leo I've heard so much about?"
I dashed to the side of the road and placed the injured hero behind a vehicle. Then made my way back to the middle of the street. "Wow, there are so many people who are fast and have green hair. What makes you think I'm this Leo?"
"Well the sarcasm for one, and for two...uh...nevermind." He then dug his fist into the ground and used them to launch at me. Then he pulled his fist back and swung with the force of a truck.
Straight towards my unamused face.
(3 Hours Later)
"The bad news is that the fighter from Universe 1 you heard so much about was attacked by a villain and sadly will not be participating due to the amount of questioning."
The woman behind Luna looked down at her and placed a hand on her shoulder. "I'm sure your brother is okay. If they have him for questioning then that means he is alive."
The green haired girl looked back at the blonde. What shocked the woman was that her expression lacked any concern at all. "I'm more concerned for the villain at this point. My brother isn't very good at holding back."
Before she could ask anything the voice of Present Mic returned on the speakers.
"The good news is the student whipped the floor with the villain and is unhurt from the encounter! It is a shame he won't be participating! I would have loved to see it!"
Oh, well that explains that.
Tokoyami looked up at the booth that held Present Mic and Mr Aizawa. He then signed. He had wanted to fight alongside his friend again. But he was also relieved that he was safe.
Luna is going to be disappointed. Better give her a show to cheer her up.
In the two weeks of training with Leo, Tokoyami had bulked up a bit and it was evident in his UA track uniform. His control on Dark Shadow had greatly improved thanks to his mediation but he had yet to access his ki again. But that didn't mean that he hadn't picked up a few things on fighting.
"Now, let me introduce the chief referee of the first year's Sports Festival! The Rated R hero, Midnight!"
Said pro was waving to the crowd and the roar in the arena intensified. Up at the top of the crowd, two females had blank expressions as they thought the same thing Tokoyami did.
"Is that really an appropriate attire for a high school game?"
Even if he didn't know Midnight from his Art History class, he would still be able to tell she uses her body to get attention. A female didn't need to dress like that to fight. Hop immediately came to mind. At first glance her outfit looked revealing but after further inspection you would see that she only removed parts of her clothing that would get in the way of the fight and all other parts were properly covered up.
While Midnight's definitely showed less skin it made up for that by showing her curves a little bit too well. At least Mineta was enjoying it.
She grabbed her microphone and spoke into it. "Let me now introduce the representative of the first years, the one who came in first place in the Entrance Exam, Katsuki Bakugou!"
This wasn't going to end well. Bakugou walked onto the stage and up to the placed microphone. Everyone remained quiet as he opened his mouth.
"Just so you all know, I'm going to win."
The stadium erupted in outroar. Many yelling at the blonde teen. Other classes turned to 1A and it came to his attention that they were now targets. Dang it Bakugou, you had to make it more difficult than it already was.
"Now it is time to introduce the first event. Hit it!" The large jumbotron began to spin. It then abruptly stopped on an event.
"Obstacle Race!"
While Midnight was going over the rules, Tokoyami looked up into the crowd at where Luna was seated. She noticed and waved at him. This caused a smile on his beak as he waved back. With Leo absent that meant she would have one person to route for and that was him.
Luna was like that chill little sister to him. She never judged him on his looks and was always polite to both him and Dark Shadow. It was no wonder why she made friends out of unexpected people. Him and Hop included.
"Contestants, take your spots!"
While everybody was making their way to the starting line, he caught a glimpse of Todoroki. He recalled when the scarred boy had challenged Midoriya in the locker room. If his past showed him anything it was that the dual quirk user tended to try to end fights early.
Which prompted the bird headed teen to wait in the back while everyone took places at the front. He noticed that he was the only one who didn't attempt to go to the front.
A few pros laughed at the teen but a certain few recognized that he knew something they didn't.
"What do you have planned, Tokoyami?" Aizawa looked at the student in the rear.
The blonde behind Luna noticed the girl's confused glance at the bird headed boy. She had told her that the second person she wanted to win was the said teen. Him being in the back meant something but she didn't have enough knowledge to determine what.
A young hero was watching TV in his agency. The guy smirked at the kid. "Well, well, let's see what the fellow bird has planned."
"Go!"
All the students rushed through the tunnel. Many had begun shoving each other in an attempt to get ahead. Tokoyami stayed out of the tunnel as all this went down. Then an idea came to his mind.
Dark Shadow listened to his plan through the connection they shared. Once done they sit and wait for the tunnel to be empty or…
And just as he thought, Todoroki froze the entire ground inside the tunnel. Most occupants were frozen stiff with the exception of those with quirks that allowed them out or ones who were strong enough to break the ice themselves.
His quirk immediately reached out with both arms and grabbed the sides of the tunnel. He started walking backwards and had Dark Shadow move behind him to act as a slingshot. Tokoyami lifted his legs off the ground and the shadow pulled the two of them through the straight tunnel at astonishing speeds.
On his way through, he noticed Mineta was caught underneath a large group who were moving through the ice. Tokoyami remembered whenever Leo saved Mineta when the reporters broke in. The grape kid may be a perv but seeing him like this didn't sit well with the teen.
Dark Shadow shot out of his chest and swiped Mineta up, knocking down all those around him in the process. The kid now hovered next to him as they zipped through the air.
"W...why did you…?" Mineta struggled to speak.
"Because it is the right thing to do. Leo did the same, didn't he?"
Mineta looked at him before glancing down. "How are we going to LAND!" His panic wasn't for nothing. We were coming up on Todoroki who had spotted us and was now making sure no matter where we landed, ice would await.
"You use your balls to save yourself! Don't worry about me!" he then threw Mineta upwards to give him time to focus. The kid grabbed his orbs and threw them on the ground and started bouncing off of them.
As for Tokoyami, Dark Shadow wrapped around his right side and, using a maneuverability technique Hop showed him, twisted in mid-air to land on his side. They skidded on the ice until he twisted again to place his feet on the ground.
"That was impressive, but you still don't stand a chance." Todoroki spoke to him from his left before sending a wall of ice his way. The teen having believed that he had won, continued to move forward.
Until a black blur sped by him. Tokoyami had frost across his body. His uniform was tattered and a few cuts crossed his arms. However, Dark Shadow had used the tiny glacier as a holding to launch Tokoyami again.
"Stay out of my Gack!" Todoroki was cut off when the shadow quirk slammed into his back. The bird teen tucked into a roll and safely landed on the ground before continuing onto the incoming obstacle
All he could see was robots. The same ones from the Entrance Exam. Including the zero pointer, which he only escaped from because of Leo. There were about five in total and many smaller robots.
His friend may not be here, but he didn't need to be saved this time. This was his battle.
"So you broke his arms in self defense? Seems plausible. And you said he possesses the same tattoo as an assassin from the USJ attack?"
"Yes"
"Okay, now explain how his arms got bent back like that."
I turn to the now self proclaimed assassin, who was now being carried away on a stretcher with both of his obsidian arms broken in multiple ways like a twig. "When he tried to punch me, I used all his momentum and force to propel it back at him. I've battled someone like him before and knew that a meathead like him would best be taken out with his own power."
"Ookay. One last thing, I apologize that you didn't get to participate in the festival. Villain attacks like these are random and it just so happened you got caught in it." The officer put his pen and paper away and gave me back my identification.
"I don't think this was a random officer." He raised an eyebrow at that. "The assassin stated he had intel that a UA student was making their way through here. He was clearly targeting people like me and the heroes only slowed him down in his objective."
"So this attack wasn't random? Just more to add to the questions he will be asked."
Suddenly a scream came from the ambulance. The officer interviewing me pulled out his weapon and ran to the back end of it. When he looked inside he started to gag.
Blood slowly dripped out of the door. At that moment, I knew that questioning the villain would be impossible.
Tokoyami was swinging underneath the zero pointers as they attempted to hit him. Dark Shadow was attaching himself to the robots as he let his host evade the attacks for them. His battle with Opac helped him significantly with battling larger opponents and now it was being put to the test.
The dual quirked user was to his left freezing all the robots that got in his way. But the bird headed teen's usage of the robots helped propel him faster through them.
He landed at the end of the obstacle and continued running. An explosion could be heard behind him but he either assumed that it was Yaoyorozu or Bakugou.
An explosion was then heard to his right as well as someone yelling 'DIE'.
Or both.
He switched from a sprint to a jog to conserve his stamina. The top students moved on so it was useless to waste it all on the front of the pack. Todoroki sprinted past him and let him fall back as more people continued to catch up.
Then the next obstacle came up.
A large chasm was ahead with tall pillars inside. Each one was connected by a thin wire and each pillar ranged from two meters to five meters.
He saw Todoroki using his ice to slide across the wires and at the same time making them impossible to cross by normal means. A few tried but they ultimately fell to the bottom of the pit where a net awaited them.
Tokoyami had his own way across and that was by using Dark Shadow as large legs to easily step over to each pillar. Todoroki had already reached the other end as well as Bakugou who just blasted his way over the obstacle.
From his vantage point he noticed Uraraka had used her quirk to fly over everyone but was going a little high up. Dark Shadow set him on the ground before the bird headed teen sent the quirk to grab her and bring her to the end to make sure she didn't harm herself.
When she landed, Uraraka replied, "Thanks Tokoyami. It was starting to get scary up there." He nodded then took off into a quick jog to continue the race.
After about a dozen meters, a bicycle drove right past him with the class president riding on top. He remembered what Leo had told him about how it was important that Yaoyorozu lost to someone in the school so that she could mentally prepare for the future. At the time he thought those words were harsh but he eventually came to the conclusion that the vice-president was way too confident in anything she did.
Now wasn't the time to beat specific people though. That battle will come later. One way or another.
Several explosions were heard ahead and a few students launched in the air with pink smoke beneath them. Tokoyami came to a stop to discover that he had just come upon a minefield.
Up ahead, he could see Todoroki and Bakugou decking it out to take the top spot. However their movements were slow because of the evasion of mines in the process. He could see Yaoyorozu stop her bike and then create a tablet. If he had to guess then it would be used to detect mines easier.
His focus returned to the obstacle. Others were passing him and jumping towards the mines in an attempt to get to the front but as Tokoyami closed his eyes and took a breath all the noise became bearable.
When he opened his eyes he remained concentrated as he remembered his training at remaining calm. It not only served to help him control Dark Shadow but also to help him make rational decisions quickly.
He began to sprint through the minefield. His feet landed in the perfect spots to allow him maximum movement. His quirk remained inside his body so that he wouldn't get blasted by the flashing mines.
Tokoyami's right arm was aching from the fall he had taken over. The ice attack hadn't helped. The scraps on his body were wearing him down and he cursed himself for such a reckless move.
But for now, he didn't need strength. The minefield was best suited for those with the best maneuverability and brains. Although Dark Shadow would help him get through faster he couldn't risk the quirk losing his strength from those around him.
Bakugou and Todoroki were coming closer to him. Their movement was slowed due to them attacking each other. Yaoyorozu had made her way next to him and was struggling to keep up with him. She apparently had no interest in falling behind him.
A click was heard and he glanced to his left to see the vice-president create a shield in his direction. "Sorry, Tokoyami. If you have to take the fall to confirm my spot then so be it."
She thrusted her shield forward in a bash attempt but before he could block a purple blur attached to Yaoyorozu's back, knocking her off balance. She was forced to slow down or get blown up. Mineta was bleeding from the nose as he looked at me.
"Go! Don't worry about me!"
Suddenly a large explosion shook everything. Mineta and Yaoyorozu stopped to avoid falling from the impact but Tokoyami kept on going and ignored the giant cloud of pink smoke.
What he couldn't ignore was Midoriya flying above his head like a rocket while riding a slab of metal.
"Midoriya?" Tokoyami's focus was taken away from the shock but he immediately recognized his mistake. His foot landed on a mine and a flash of light and a shockwave blew him in the air backwards.
Ringing was all the bird headed teen could hear as he could partially see his body fall towards more mines.
However, a hand came out of nowhere and slapped his chest. All momentum was stopped as he finally recollected his bearings. When he turned to see who had saved him, Uraraka gave him a smile.
"Just thought I should repay you for helping me earlier."
Tokoyami looked towards the front of the pack. The gravity girl had apparently ran back to save him and was currently behind a large group. If this kept up then the two of them wouldn't make it to the finish line.
Then an idea came to his head. Tokoyami looked towards his savior. "Uraraka, I have a plan but we need to work together to pull it off." He then began explaining the plan.
At the front, Midoriya had exploded forward with the force of the mines he had activated next to Bakugou and Todoroki. His feet landed on safe ground as he sprinted. The two remaining teens gave chase as the final stretch came up.
"Deku, get back here you bastard!" Bakugou was exploding forward with all he had in an attempt to catch Midoriya. Todoroki slowly took the lead on the explosive teen by blasting his ice at full power behind him.
"I can't let him win. I'll prove that old man wrong." The dual-quirk user had an expression of determination. Frost started creeping up the side of his face. Yet even with that he continued on.
Suddenly a black twirl passed overhead. When the two following teens looked up to see what it was, they were met with Tokoyami and Uraraka attached by Dark Shadow about ten meters between them.
The plan was working splendidly. Tokoyami had made Dark Shadow throw him and wrap around Uraraka to carry her along with him. She then released her quirk in mid-air to force Tokoyami to be the anchor as she used her quirk on herself. The Shadow then whipped her towards his master and when Uraraka had momentum she would deactivate her quirk and then high five Tokoyami when she flew by.
This process repeated until they were a flying flisby in the air. And they had quirkly shot up to the front.
However, when Bakugou saw this he shot up and blasted the umbilical cord of Dark Shadow. This forced the beast to let go of Uraraka behind the two teens. She yelped when she hit the ground but shot up running to keep up. Tokoyami still had some momentum as he landed just behind Midoriya and rolled onto his feet.
Tokoyami began jogging but when he heard the cluster-fuck of what was Todoroki and Bakugou destroying everything to get to the lead he decided to sprint to avoid any more injuries.
Before he knew it they exited the final tunnel as Midoriya took first and Tokoyami took second. The bird headed teen jumped to the side to narrowly avoid the explosions and ice that exited the tunnel.
When the smoke cleared, Tokoyami was on his back breathing heavily. The small injuries he had finally set in and his body started to ache. He then gave a slight chuckle as he sat up and flinched. "Damn, I didn't really think this through. Probably could have done just fine without the excessive effort."
"I think you did just fine, Tokoyami."
The bird turned to see Uraraka slowly walk up to him. He glanced behind her to see the scoreboard. It showed she placed in fifth place. "Without you and Mineta then I wouldn't have made it at all." He got up to his feet and bowed to her. "For that I thank you."
Midoriya ran up to the two of them. "I saw you guys when I looked behind. You two were amazing."
Uraraka blushed at the compliment and tried to hide her blush. Then a slight whimper came from Tokoyami's chest. They all looked to see Dark Shadow, the size of a cockroach, crying.
Tokoyami began to stroke the back of his quirk's neck. "I do apologize, Dark Shadow. My reckless maneuver weakened not only myself but got you harmed in the process. I promise that it will never happen again."
His quirk looked at him. "I don't care about that. I'm just looking for some love." Tokoyami was taken aback by this response and then remembered that his quirk was more docile the weaker he was.
He would need to go into the next round without using Dark Shadow to make up for the energy lost.
When Uraraka started petting Dark Shadow. Luna was calming down from celebrating Tokoyami's place in the race.
The green haired girl sat down and took a breath. The woman behind her smiled down at Luna. Even though her brother would not be attending, her spirit didn't seem to be diminished.
She then looked back to the small group that had formed and watched as the girl who helped the bird teen get congratulated by her classmates. The women had noticed the girl save the other kid and work with him to get a high spot. The pro would have to keep an eye on that girl.
A notification sounded on her phone. When the women looked at it she saw an article had been posted about the villain attack on the quirkless student. When she read the headline her breathing stopped. As fast as possible she hid her phone in the pocket of the hoodie.
She didn't know if the girl in front of her was one to look at others' phones but she didn't want to risk it for the headline. Now she prayed that this girl's brother wasn't mentally scarred.
'Villain, who attacked the quirkless exchange student, ripped out his own throat shortly after losing to the student. Warning! Article not for readers under the age of 18.'
Now you are probably wondering why I haven't posted anything. Well the reason for that is because work has me moving around a bunch. Vacation was spent more with my family then writing this story. Also about this story, I hope you understand why Leo is not competing in the sports festival. He would simply change the story too early and the whole reason why the Universe 9 tournament arc happened was so Tokoyami could become stronger in this arc. That and Hop getting more character. Chapters should come in faster so get ready for that.
