Every day seemed to be a repeat, like a twisted version of The Truman Show. He would get up and try to swallow the pressure building up in his throat as he realised the love of his life was no longer there to wake up in his arms.
There was not much to do anymore, so ketamine became his friend. It helped him switch off what came to be an endless descent into torturous scenarios where he had to go on without his other half.
A pronounced knock caused his umpteenth breakdown to come to an abrupt halt. Could it be?
Please.
He wanted nothing more than to touch, kiss, even smell her again.
But why would it be her? If it's one thing Jack knew, it was his beloved. And he knew she would never change her mind.
Pure, unfiltered, human hope fought its way through his unhinged wall of pessimism. The stoic, unbothered Jack everyone knew was no more. In his place stood a very human shell devoid of all previous habits. Now all he carried was a heavy heart. And all he wanted was his baby back.
"Uhh hello! Jack! I know you're in there!"
The second he heard her honey glaze voice he bolted from his now stained grey sofa.
'My baby!'. His heart began to pound faster than his head. And in that moment, he felt no pain. She came back.
As Jack opened the door he was greeted with those familiar loving eyes. Words failed him as her explanation about some text to pick up her stuff turned to white noise. He failed to notice his hand was still firmly on the doorknob, his knuckles turning white. His vision became clouded and suddenly he couldn't feel his feet. She came back.
He was snapped back to Earth as she brushed past him, inviting herself inside. A touch.
The next hour was spent by him once again showing his quiet and shy side he reserved only for her, as he continued to love her from a distance, watching her go through several weeks' worth of mess.
On the other side of the room, she couldn't pretend to be angry any longer and ran to hug him without a word. He could do nothing more than feel his heart race once again. She got up to look at him with a smile. "Friends again? :P". A wave of relief washed over him and he physically felt each one of his 650 muscles simultaneously relax.
The old Jack was back again as he replied, "YES :D". She leaned in. A kiss.
He sighed, breathing in what felt like the best scent in the world. A smell.
All his troubles faded away with his girl back in his arms, as he mused about the lowest point in his life. If only he'd known everything would be okay :)
