Primrose
"Ladies first!" My heart starts to pound. I could be picked. It's very much so possible, and I don't like it. Effie Trinket, the escort for district twelve, looks far too happy to be picking a child to send to their death.
"Primrose Everdeen!"
My heart stops. This can't be happening. Impossible. My name is only in there once. But the path is clearing and people are staring. I have to walk to the stage. I slowly move my feet toward the general direction of the stage. I hear Katniss screaming my name and I look over. She's screaming, but I can't tell what she's saying. Mother is sitting there with a blank face. She stares straight ahead.
I reach the stage. "Let's have a round of applause for our female tribute for district twelve!" Katniss stands shock still. She stares at me. She starts to raise three fingers in a salute, but Peacekeepers drag her away before she can finish. The rest of district twelve starts to give me a salute.
Effie reaps the male tribute. Peeta Mellark. He is a townsfolk. I think Katniss went to school with him, but I'm not sure. A thousand thoughts run through my head, the first being that this is the kid who's planning to kill me.
Effie tells us to shake hands, and we do. We look at each other as we are taken to the Justice Building.
Katniss
Peacekeepers drag me to the Justice Building where I find Mother. I go up to her and hug her fiercely. She isn't even crying. Her soul has been torn apart, between Dad's death and Prim's likely death. Gale comes sprinting in and I can tell he came straight from the square.
"Katniss!" I run over to Gale. "Gale, this is all my fault. I meant to volun-" He cuts me off. "Katniss, listen to me. This is not your fault. It's the damn Cap-" The Peacekeepers give him a look. "It's the Capitol's fault," he says in a whisper. I say nothing and hug him.
The Peacekeepers nod to the door and I go rushing in. Mother follows. I hug Prim and tell her that she'll be alright. She has tears streaking down her face. "Prim, listen to me. You need to find an alliance. And regardless of what the old drunk says, work on the weapons straightaway. You'll need it." She nods. "Katniss, what if I can't find a weapon from the Cornucopia?" "Make your own. Ask a trainer how." She nods and I let Mother say goodbyes. Mother walks out and Gale walks in. He gives her a quick tip on how to make a weapon and tells her to learn to hunt. I give Prim one last hug, and they take her away.
Peeta
"Peeta Mellark!" I walk up to the stage and shake hands with the tiny girl. I can't believe this is happening right now. I'm going to the Games.
At the Justice Building, my mom and dad walk in. They hug me and don't say much. They tell me that they love me and that they want me to come home. Truth be told, I don't know if I want to come home a killer or die a lover.
Katniss, Prim's sister, comes in next. My heart sinks to my feet. I have a crush on her. It's a lose lose scenario. If I die, then I never get to tell her how I feel. If Prim dies and I win, then surely she'll hate me.
"Peeta, I'm very sorry that you got reaped." I nod. "Do you mind allying with Prim? You're the only person I trust with her." I nod again. Katniss didn't come in here to say goodbye. She is asking me to sacrifice myself for her.
Mrs. Everdeen
Prim is like a lamb to the slaughter. There is no way she will get out of that arena alive. She is twelve years old and can't handle a weapon. When we say our goodbyes, I hug her so tightly that I may have bruised her ribs. I gently ease off of her and ask her to come home.
Peacekeepers drag us away before we can say much else. I blow her a kiss and the door shuts. Katniss and I wait for Gale in silence.
After we drop Gale off at his house, Katniss helps me make a large stew. We use her game and some herbs to make it last for days. That way we don't have to cook every single night during the Games.
Katniss doesn't say too much. I can tell she is scared, possibly more than I am. She tells me she will be off hunting tomorrow. I tell her that she doesn't have to worry about school during the Games. If your family is reaped, you are excused from work/school for the entirety of the Games.
I find some anti-depressants in the medicine cabinet. I take two and go to bed.
