"What do you most fear?" The voice echoed throughout my mind. The kind voice had now become darker and I could sense heart all around me.
Heat, burning, unrelenting heat. I was standing in a circle of flames, flames with nothing past them. The smoke filled my lungs along with another scent, the smell of burning, rotting flesh. I coughed, the content of my stomach threatening to come back up. I gulped down the bile in my throat and took a deep breath, pushing down the fear that overwhelmed me. Taking slow steps I approached the circle of flames, and extending my hand into the searing hot fire. The flames seemed to reach out to grab me, sending a burning sensation throughout my body. I jumped back, tripping over myself and falling to the burning ground. I couldn't move, held in place by a fear so real it threatened to destroy me. Hot tears sprung from my and turned into steam as they hit the hot ground. I screamed, the pain becoming too real for me to bear.
"It's okay," the voice guiding me said. "It is only as real as you allow it to be." i took a deep breath and the ground became a cool rock, the pain seecing almost immediately in my body. "Let your fears become clear to you and then let them drift away, you are no longer in any danger Selene."
I let myself remember the scene that I had tried too hard to forget. The man rushing towards me as I lay demobilized on the ground. His sword burying itself in my chest. My fingers clenched around the ground as I allowed myself to forget about this fear, knowing it was in the past and would do me no good now. I let out the breath and slowly managed to push myself to my knees. I lifted my head until I was facing my fear, facing him. He stood in front of me, covered in his lavished robes and garments. His hair was arranged around the crown that was seated on his head. He looked down at me, his grin pure evil as he slowly spoke the words that had haunted me since my arrival. "You will never see your people again." The fear the words sent through my body reminded me of how real this would be if I did not succeed in what I was doing. I closed my eyes and spoke forth to my fear. "You may be right, but if I never see my people again I will destroy yours." I saw a flash of fear appear on Ozia's face before he and the fire disappeared.
I opened eyes and was back in the southern air temple, sitting on the rocky crevice that overlooked a clearing. I looked next to me and a small, dark skinned man sat there, staring at me intently. I stared back before picking up a boul of his broth and taking a sip, allowing myself to let all my fears go away. I felt lighter, as if I was floating somehow. Without me realizing it my lips had started to curl up into a smile. I quickly regained my composure and the man sitting beside me laughed slightly as I tried to have my satisfaction. Great, this wasn't another waist of time. I put down the boul and resumed my meditative position, closing my eyes. "Whats next?" I asked, my voice sounding more free than it had been since my accession.
"We are in no rush," he replied, taking a sip from his bowl. When he saw me glare at him he went back into his position and instructed me to close my eyes again. "Now," I could feel the vibration as his diaphragm moved within him. "Now we will open the water chakra." He proceeded to instruct me to relax, and this time I listened. I needed him to return to my people so my initial attitude was gone. And, okay maybe he had helped a little…. "This chakra deals with pleasure and is blocked by guilt. Tell me Selene, what are your guilts?"
I closed my eyes and the voices were the first that came. Jason Chloe, countless others without names. I heard them as they begged for my mercy, and then I heard the sound of my blad ripping through there body. I opened my eyes, trying to draw myself back into reality but instead I had opened them to a new nightmare. A field of dead bodies.
Over 100 people lay at my feet, the carcusses intact yet smelling of rotten flesh. I gulped, trying to push down the fear. I needed to get out of here. Slowly, being careful not to step on any of the entangled limbs. My bare feet stuck to the bloody group and with every step I curled my toes tighter, trying not to gag. I didn't know where I was going, but I knew that it must end. I placed my foot gingerly in between a severed head and a hairy arm. It's not real, just keep walking.
I jumped as a cold, clamming hand clamped itself around my ankle. I turned around to the body of a child, no older than me. His hand was clamped around my ankle, and his cold dead skin felt alive. I kneeled down to remove the hand, having to pry off the fingers. Somehow, it the midst of all the blood I spotted the gold ring on his finger. No, it couldn't be. I reached to his feace and slowly pulled back his bloody black hair. I scratched. Not only was it him, but his eyes were open. I tried to get up, to back, but cold hands were holding me down. 5, 10, no 50 pairs. I couldn't move, and as the terror overwhelmed me I found myself being pulled beneath the bodies, beneath the floor, and into darkness.
I tried to scream, but no sound left my left my lips. After trying for what seemed like forever I gave up, and curled myself into a ball. Hot tears streemed down my face, and I felt as if I could drown in them. I'm so sorry, I thought. I tried to stifle them but they kept coming.
"Selene," A voice broke through the sound of my cries. "These things where in the past, there is no worrying about them or changing anything, let go." His voice was joined by others, their voices. But, I bid them farewell, pushing them from my mind and opening my eyes.
I had been crying, and my cheeks were stained with tears. Before he could ask me if I was okay I jumped up, quickly heading back toward the temple.
The coldness of the smooth pathment was a relief to my bare feet as I hurried up the stone stares. Once at the top I looked around for a place to go, a place were wouldn't find me to soon. I saw it. At the top of the southern are temple was a sort of bath, in a bowl. I scurried up many more stairs, until I was about 12 feet below it. There were strangely no stares to it, so I would have to climb. I thought of using a knife, but did not want to damage the elaborate craftsmanship. Talking a deep breath I centered myself, and positioned my feet on the ground. I aloud myself to listen to the earth. 3, 2, 1….
I launched myself into the air, just high enough to land in the tub. I landed with a splash in the water, and completely soaked myself.
I groaned and just allowed myself to float in the water,
Insert memory
I quickly jumped when I heard a small growling sound. Before a second I was in my stance, ready to fight. However, the sound had not come from a human. And, the animal was certainly no threat. Infact, it seemed to be a baby. It was floating there, just looking at me. It's fure was white, and it had a brown arrow design on it's body. I quickly tossed my knife over the ege aand held up my hands.
"It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you." I sat down in the water and started tracing my finger throught it. I smiled up at the strange creature. "Come on, it's nice and cold."
The creature flew closer curiously, but wasn't quite to the water. This gave me an idea. I slowly started moving my hand, until a little bubble of water formed. I brought it just close enough until the creature stuck out it's tongue. Them, I dropped in on the creature's tongue. It seemed startled, but then did a twirl in the air. I made another, and this time the creature chased it. A smile was starting to form on the face and by the time we were on the 6th round, the baby had begun to warm up to me. I suddenly got an idea and splashed one on the creature's head. He shook his fure out, trying to get in out before jumping into the tub with me, creating august of wind with it's tail that cause the water to splash me.
"You can airbending," I said in astonishment to the creature. That must have been how it could fly. The air creature approached me slowly, still unsure as weather to trust me. As the beast drew closer I reached my hand out slowly, stopping mear inches above darkened fur of it's forehead.
"Selene," called a strangely musical voice. The bisons ears pricked up, and he splashed out of the water, vanishing into the clouds above me. I sighed and turned my head around in annoyance, 30 feet below me was Pattike, looking around the gardens for me. I considered staying hidden, waiting for the night and hoping the bison would return. However, I decided against it. Every hour I wasted was an hour I was away from my people. I needed to unlock the five chakras and master the final element. I remembered what the spirit had told me. Only the master of all four elements can open a bridge between worlds. He had meant the avatar no doubt, but, due to the fact that he had been missing for 100 years I had decided to take things into my own hands. After mastering Air I would be able to bridge the worlds, whatever that meant. I would be able to go home. And so, I decided to climb down the spire and finish unlocking my chakras.
"Master Pattike," I asked, taking a sip of the broth. We had just finished opening the final chakra. This one was easy for me, because I did not have any attachments in this world but one. And, I had sacrificed my people for him once so I knew I had to let go. "What is the original source of airbending? I know for water it was the moon and ocean, earth the badgermoles, and fire the dragons. However, I could not find anything on the original airbenders."
"Ahh yes good question." He smiled, putting down his broth . "the original source of Airbending is the sky bison, although they went extinct along with the airbenders a hundred years ago." He said, failing to mention that the Fire nation had murdered them all.
"That's what they said about the dragons too," I mumbled quietly. Though, apparently it was not quiet enough. He gave me a quizzical look, and I had to scramble for an excuse. "What I meant was, it's a shame that the original source of fire and earthbending is gone."
"Yes, it is." he said, shaking his head. "But, the fire nation couldn't let any bison survive. It was said that a thousand years ago the first airbenders were nonbender. They learned from the bison. The fire nation couldn't run the risk of anyone learning the art, no matter how slim."
"Thanks for the lesson." I said patting the head of the creature I had named Mar. It was short for alqamar which meant moon. This was because her slightly silver coat reminded me of the moon as it flew in the sky. I intwind my fingers in her silky fur and felt her "pur" from within. It had been months since the guru had left the southern air temple. He had invited me with him to travel to the others, but I decided to stay here. I knew my best chance of learning the ancient art was to stay here and observe the creature. And what can I say, I was right. There were herds of bisons, and even strange lemur like creatures. All of which could fly. At first the creatures were apprehensive to approach me, but soon I became a familiar face. I finally learned what it meant to be an airbender, to be free, just as the bison were free from the ground. With this I began to airbend, starting off rocky and eventually growing better. I still was not a master, but having learned four elements I should have been able to return to my people. This was why I was sad today. For, tomorrow I was leaving Mar and the other bison. I tried to smile, but it was obvious to the creatures I had been saddened. And, as I packed my bag and began the trek down the mountain, I knew I would never be coming back.
As the ship took me towards the southern watertribe, I knew that my time in this world was limited. And, as I walked to the center of the north pole I knew I would finally be going home.
I was wrong.
