Steve Rodgers had lost nearly everyone in his life. It started with his father when he was almost too young to remember. His mother he remembered better, a nurse to her last moment. She had died trying to get patients out of a medical camp, she got hit and couldn't get back up. After waking up from the ice he had developed something of an odd habit. When he and Nick Fury had first sat down to talk he'd introduced himself as the son of Jack Fury, one of the Howling Commandos. So he'd done some digging. Turned out Jack had three children, and that led him to be curious about the other members of the Howling Commandos, about what had become of them after.
Dum Dum Duggan, who had taken over leading the Commandos after Steve's apparent death, was still alive, living in a retirement community in Scotland. He'd married eventually and had several children, they had given him grandchildren and he swore up and down that he refused to die until he met the great-grandchildren. He hadn't changed much. James Mortia had passed in his sleep shortly after the birth of his first grandchild, several years before Steve had been discovered in the ice. James Falsworth, their only British member in the field, had passed from a heart attack four years before Steve was found. He had never married, nor had any children. But he'd had a sister and she had several children, one named after her brother. Gabe Jones had passed only two weeks before Cap got pulled from the ice. He had a few kids scattered across the country too. The only French member of their little team, Jacque Dernier, had also passed childless and unmarried.
He'd found this out in his apartment, alone, going through the SHIELD files Fury had given him. Two though remained untouched. He knew that Bucky had never had the chance to have children. Peggy was a bit of a sore spot too. She had what they were calling Alzheimer's, what they had once called Dementia. She recognized him but it didn't last long. Visiting her was hard, too hard most of the time. Part of him didn't want to know what her life without him had been, a small petty part. He sighed at the file he'd been handed by Maria Hill. It was a bit weird he supposed as he looked down at the file, on it was a new logo. Instead of the SHIELD logo that the others had emblazoned on the front this one had the logo for Stark Industries.
Flipping it open he flinched slightly at the photo staring back at him. It was her last school photo, grinning up at him from the page. The profile was in depth. It listed everything she had done, the fact that she was the original host of the Carnage symbiote, which was still on lockdown. It explained what she'd told SHIELD and Tony about how she'd gotten her powers. It wasn't until he reached the back of the file that he found what he was really looking for. Her family tree, there was one included in most files. He frowned starting at the bottom of the file. She was the bottom of the tree, of course. Just above her sat her parents, Mary Parker and Richard Parker, next to them her aunt May Parker and her Uncle Ben Parker all with dates of death next to their dates of birth. Richards parents had death dates as well. Mary's too. Annie and William Fitzherbert. Steve frowned. Annie looked almost familiar. He traced the tree back one more from her and froze.
"That can't be right." He muttered. Annie's parents, Piper's great-grandparents were listed here as Winnifred and George Barnes. He shook his head. But there was no denying it. He knew those names and faces. He stood nearly running to the other files. He pulled out one of the two he'd never had the courage to open before and nearly tore it open. At the bottom of the tree sat the name James Buchanan Barnes. Next to his name were three others Marie, Rebecca, and Annie. Steve was kicking himself. He had completely forgotten about Bucky's sisters. Marie was older than he was, she had already married before Bucky went off to war. According to the file she had passed as well. Rebecca had passed a few years ago. But it was Annie, the youngest of the four who interested him now. He set the two trees next to each other.
There was no denying it. The picture was the same. The dates of birth and death were the same. James Barnes had been Piper Parker's Great-Uncle. He stared down at the file in disbelief.
"Maybe you should stay behind, we still aren't sure how you got here." Spider-Punk made the suggestion as they headed out of the bunker. Piper shook her head.
"No way am I missing out on a fight. I have a thought about how I ended up here but I don't know for sure." But before Hobie could protest further Piper was swinging away towards downtown. He followed close behind her, they reached Time Square at the same time. It wasn't the same one Piper was used to. The adds that were still functional were just a bit off. 'Global Hollywood' instead of 'Planet Hollywood', 'Polka-Cola' instead of 'Coca-Cola, but one thing was familiar thing here. It should have been comforting but the sight of the Green Goblin roaring at the top of his lungs was never going to be comforting.
"I'm assuming that's not your Norman Osborn." Piper asked and Hobie swore colorfully.
"That's your Norman Osborn?" Piper nodded.
"I know right? It's all kinds of messed up." Hobie nodded.
"I was gonna go with fucked but yeah, messed up works." Hobie shot a web line at the Goblin's foot, sticking it to the ground. Piper followed his lead and frowned as a shock passed through her web and into her arm. The Goblin seemed to have noticed it too. He turned away from Spider-Punk and lunged at Spidergirl.
"Take us back!" He snarled. She socked him in the jaw as lightning crackled between them. That was new.
"I didn't do this Gobby!" They grappled and more lightning crackled. It only stopped when a web line pulled Piper off the Goblin. She blinked. Hobie had pulled her and the Goblin apart.
"The hell was that?!" He demanded, webbing the Goblin's feet back down as he roared and tried to charge. Piper looked down at her hands, small amounts of electricity still crackled between her fingers. At that moment Karen's voice popped up in her ear.
'I have completed analysis on the device.' Piper blinked. She hadn't even noticed that the device that had been added to her webshooters had sparked to life. It seemed to be absorbing the electricity.
"Well?"
'The device appears to act as a stabilizer. Without it your molecules would slowly breakdown in this new universe as the base molecules differ slightly from the ones in our universe.' Piper blinked.
"How do you figure?"
'Because the Goblin is experiencing these side effects without the device.' Piper looked up and gasped. The Goblin was doubled over howling in pain. It looked like there was a bad tv signal racing across his skin causing him to practically ripple. Piper swore.
"Can we fix it?"
'I believe that the exchange of energy between the two of you and the super collider cause this multiversal displacement. The machine appears to absorb the excess energy. If you can rebalance the energy in theory that will snap the two of you back to your proper universe.'
"And how do I do that?"
'Physical contact appeared effective.'
"So punch him more. I can do that." Piper lunged at the Goblin as Hobie stared at her shaking his head.
