I wrote this fanfiction a very long time ago, it must be nearly ten years ago now. So I thought I'd dust it off and retell this story, it will be nice reliving it again. I wanted to write about the Wammy House, the school always interested me.

I first remember reading Another Note, I immediately took a shining to Beyond Birthday a.k.a BB or Backup. I love the anime series too, it's still holds its own until this very day.

-I don't own Death Note.

-My laptop charger decided to die on me - I'm sorry for any spelling errors and silly mistakes.

-This fanfiction was quite popular when I first wrote it, hopefully the changes I make will improve it. I feel more confident now with my writing skills.

-Thank you for the reviews, faves and alerts!

Enjoy!

Chapter 13!

It was just after 11:30pm and Elizabeth couldn't sleep, she couldn't stop thinking about what Backup had said to them this morning in the kitchen. A had chased him out of the kitchen not long after what he said to them, she hadn't seen any of them since breakfast. She was hoping Backup was playing one of his creepy games with them, he enjoyed playing tricks and tormenting the other children of the orphanage. But it wasn't funny what he had said during breakfast with what was going on right now with The Midnight Slasher, it was scary.

Elizabeth sighed to herself and rolled onto her side, she just wanted to go to sleep. She would be going home tomorrow, she couldn't wait to sleep in her own room. She switched the beside table's lamp on and sat up in the bed, she then took her reading book from the side table. She turned to the page she had bookmarked and placed the book on her lap, she was hoping the book would make her fall asleep. Her Aunt Thora had given her a book to take with her in case she got bored, she had told her that she use to read it with her Grandmother when she was a child. It was called The Call of the Wild, the story was set in the Yukon during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. It had sledging dogs in it and snowy mountains, it was kind of boring. But it was a classic so her Aunt told her, it had been one of her favorite books from her childhood.

Elizabeth glanced at the bedside table's lamp when it flickered, she thought it could be a loose plug or something. But the building was old, there could be issues with the electrical wires for all she knew. She snuggled down into the pillows of the bed and turned the page in her book before she yawned. she could feel her eyelids getting heavy. She closed the book and placed it on the bedside cabinet, she could continue reading some more of the book in the morning.

A Few Hours Later

Elizabeth jumped up in the bed when she heard screams coming from the corridor, she kicked the blanket of herself and scrambled out of the bed. She had no idea what was going on, she hurried over to the door and unlocked it before she opened it wide. There was a group of children running down the corridor, she stepped out of the room and quickly followed after them. She felt someone grab hold of her arm, she stumbled over her own two feet before she was led along the corridor by an unknown person. She got a quick glance at the person, it turned out to be Backup.

" Backup!" Elizabeth said with panic in her voice. " What's going on?! Where are we going?!"

" Don't ask any questions, just run!" Backup replied while he led her into another corridor. " We've got to get to the dinner hall, that's where Watari is with the other orphans!"

" Where's A?!" Elizabeth asked.

" I don't know, he told me to get you before he went to find Watari!" Backup replied. " He'll be waiting for us in the dinner hall with everyone else, we've got hide from him!"

" Hide from who?!" Elizabeth asked.

" The Midnight Slasher, he's somewhere in The Wammy House!" Backup replied, his grip tightened around her arm." He's already attacked one boy, he maybe after you or Alternative next!"

" No, he can't be here..." Elizabeth muttered.

Elizabeth looked over her shoulder while they made their way down the two flights of stairs which led them the ground floor, they then ran passed Watari's office. They continued to hurry down the hallway, they weren't that far away from the dinner hall. Glancing back over her shoulder Elizabeth stumbled and fell onto her knees, she hadn't noticed Backup stopping dead in front of her. He pulled her to her feet and led her back along the corridor.

" What's wrong?!" Elizabeth asked." I thought we were going to the dinner hall!"

" Change of plan, we need to hide somewhere else!" Backup said, his speaking tone was low." There's a body at the end of that corridor, we can't go to the dinner hall after all. But I know where we can hide, you can trust me!"

Elizabeth glanced back down the corridor while the lights of the orphanage began to flicker, she heard more children screaming before she was stopped in front of a door. Backup opened the door and dragged her into the dimly lit office, he then closed the door behind them. He pointed over at the sofa and told her to sit down, she did has he asked. Backup hurried over to a desk near a window, he began to rummage around in the desk's draws. He chuckled to himself while he took a key from one of the draws, he looked pleased with himself. He rushed back over to the door and locked it before he put the key in his back pocket.

" You've got to be quiet like a little mouse! No talking or crying like a scared little baby..." Backup said, he walked over to the desk and switched the desk's table lamp on. " No sudden movements, we cannot be found or we may get slashed by him. Do you understand?"

" I un-un-understand..." Elizabeth stuttered.

" Good." Backup smirked.

Elizabeth look around the office, it was quite minimalist and plain. There was a wooden cabinet filled with books in one corner of the room, there were piles of folders stacked on a coffee table in the middle of the room and a chessboard on the another coffee table on the other side of the office. She looked over at Backup while he drew the window's white thin coloured drapes, he then grabbed some blankets from a brown leather sofa chair near the window. He carried them over to the door and dropped them in front of it. He then got onto his knees and began to roll up the blankets.

" What are you doing?" Elizabeth whispered.

" Shielding the lamp's light from the corridor, we'll be safe as long as no one knows we're here." Backup whispered, he placed one of the rolled up blankets in front of the door gap and pointed over to the wooden cabinet. " There's a jar of strawberry jam in the top draw of that cabinet, I need you to get it for me."

" Okay..." Elizabeth said.

" Please walk carefully, the floorboards in this office can be creaky." Backup said.

Elizabeth slipped from the sofa and tiptoed over to the cabinet, she then opened the top draw of the cabinet. She took the jar from the draw and closed it, she then return to Backup. She watched him get to his feet while she held the jam jar towards him, he snatched it off her and held it in front of his face.

" Pour half of the strawberry jam in front of the rolled up blankets, then I want you to return to the sofa and stay quiet." Backup whispered before he gave it back to her. " You can sleep if you like, but you've got to keep quiet. Also don't touch anything, he dislikes people touching his belongings."

" Who's he?" Elizabeth asked.

" L, this is his office." Backup replied before he walked over to the desk. " Now hurry up, we don't have all day!"

Elizabeth unscrewed the lid on the jar and poured some of the strawberry jam on the floor like Backup had told her to do. She returned the sofa and sat on it's edge. Backup was sitting on a chair at the desk with his feet resting on it, she soon noticed a silver letter opener in his hand. He was chuckling quietly to himself while the office chair creaked beneath his weight.

" Isn't this delightful? I like hiding games in the dead of the night..." Backup said quietly. " Even more delightful when we're hiding to save our own lives from a serial killer, don't you find it exciting too?"

" I find it terrifying..." Elizabeth whispered.

" That's because you're a silly little girl, you don't understand The Midnight Slasher like I do." Backup said with a smirk before he got up from the office chair. " Unlike Alternative, I know the real reason why he takes the lives of innocent people. It's an experiment you see, he kills to see what makes them tick when they close their eyes for the final time before their eternal sleep."

" L said The Midnight Slasher murdered people because of sin..." Elizabeth said while she watched him place the silver letter opener down on the desk. " He's nothing but a monster, he takes innocent people's lives because that's all he can be in this world. Mr Wammy will catch him, he'll go to jail for decades for what he's done to all of those poor people!"

" A monster? Yes, I like that word..." Backup chuckled. " He may kill because of sin, but what he's really doing is cleansing them before death. He's making them pure before they pass over to their new lives in the next world, we're all born in sin you know."

" That's a stupid reason, he's a monster!" Elizabeth frowned.

Elizabeth jumped when she heard the handle of the office's door rattling, she placed the jar down on the pillow next to her and got to her feet. She looked over at Backup, he beckoned her to join him at the desk with his hand before he switched off the desk's lamp. She hurried over to him and gasped when he pulled underneath the desk. Backup put his hand over her mouth, he then whispered into her ear.

" Ssssh!" Backup whispered, he removed his hand from her mouth" Don't say a word, don't even breath. Someone is here to play with us..."

Elizabeth listened to the door's handle rattling again, she looked at Backup kneeing next to her. The situation they were in was amusing him, he was getting a kick out of a serial killer coming after them. She shuffled away from him until she felt the leg of the desk touch her back. They soon heard footsteps walking away from the office door, the person was leaving.

" Do you think he's gone now?" Elizabeth whispered.

" No, he's still coming for us..." Backup whispered while a smirk slowly spreading across his face. " Can't you hear the walls creaking? He must know about the secret passage L uses sometimes to get to his bedroom from his office, he must have been stalking these halls for a very long time without anyone's knowledge."

" I'm scared..." Elizabeth whispered, her bottom lip trembled. " I need to get out of this office, I want to go home!"

" Alright, I can arrange that for you..." Backup smirked.

Backup crawled from underneath the desk, she followed after him and got to her feet. She looked around the office, the creaking sounds were coming from all around them. She moved closer towards him and grabbed hold of his shirt's sleeve, she was frightened.

" Backup..." Elizabeth whispered.

" Sssh!" Backup said.

Backup took the silver letter opener from the desk, the moonlight entering the office through a gap between the drapes caused the letter opener to shine. They soon heard a gently tapping sound coming from behind them, they slowly turned around and saw an outline of a very tall man standing outside of the window. Elizabeth covered up her mouth and screamed, she could see a large knife in his hand. He had found them, they needed to get away.

" Backup, watch out!" Elizabeth yelled.

Elizabeth grabbed hold of Backup's arm and pulled him away from the window, she began to led him over towards the office's door. The window smashed and the man began to climb through the window, but Backup was laughing about the situation. Elizabeth wrapped her arms around her weird friend's arm and pulled him further away from the man, but it wasn't long until gunshots could be heard from outside of the window.

" Let him come!" Backup laughed.

" Get away from him!" Elizabeth yelled.

Elizabeth screamed when a vase not far away from them smashed, someone was firing a gun from outside of the window. She stumbled backwards and let go of Backup's arm when she heard another gunshot, she felt a sharp pain on the back of her head. Her eyesight began to blur, she could see a outline of someone standing over her before the darkness claimed her.
