I wrote this fanfiction a very long time ago, it must be nearly ten years ago now. So I thought I'd dust it off and retell this story, it will be nice reliving it again. I wanted to write about the Wammy House, the school always interested me.

I first remember reading Another Note, I immediately took a shining to Beyond Birthday a.k.a BB or Backup. I love the anime series too, it's still holds its own until this very day.

-I don't own Death Note.

-My laptop charger decided to die on me - I'm sorry for any spelling errors and silly mistakes.

-This fanfiction was quite popular when I first wrote it, hopefully the changes I make will improve it. I feel more confident now with my writing skills.

-Thank you for the reviews, faves and alerts!

Enjoy!

Chapter 14!

A Day Later

Elizabeth could hear birds chirping, they were singing such a peaceful melody. She could feel the warmth of the sunlight on her skin, the sweet scent of grapes lingered in the air. Slowly opening her eyes she could see a bright light shining down on her, she felt spaced out. A familiar voice soon caught her attention, she had no idea where she was right now.

" Hey Izzy, can you hear me?" The voice whispered in her right ear. " It's time to wake up, you've been asleep for hours! Aren't you hungry yet or tired of sleeping the day away?"

Turning her head to the right she saw a blurred outline of a person, they were staring at her. They had bright blue eyes and big smile across their face. She rubbed at her eyes while she reached her hand towards the person's face, she ran finger tips down the person's cheek with a smile on her face.

" Mummy?" Elizabeth asked" Have you come to take me home?"

" Mummy?!" The person laughed. " You must have banged your head harder than we first thought, how are you feeling?"

" Alternative, is that you?" Elizabeth asked before she pinched the person's nose with a giggle. " I'm feeling great and all silly! Do you have any toffee? I feel like eating a big bowl of lemon jelly with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles!"

" Yeah, it's me..." A replied with a smile, he took hold of her hand and placed it down by her side. " Of course you're feeling great, you've been given a small dose of morphine for the pain. It will make you feel spacey for a few hours."

" Am I druggie now?" Elizabeth asked.

" No, I don't think so..." A replied with a smile. " But you've had us all worried, your housekeeper is coming to visit you this evening with your Aunt. I think you're going to stay here again for the night under the observation of Nurse Clark, she's really nice."

" Where am I?" Elizabeth asked.

" You're in the hospital wing of the orphanage. Don't you remember what happened?" A asked while he crossed his arms. " You fell and banged the back of your head really hard a door handle, you may have a mild concussion which may explain your short term memory loss right now. Can I ask you what do you remember from last night?"

" I don't know, my head feels fuzzy..." Elizabeth replied. " But I can remember Backup being there, he was with me in L's office."

" He was with you, but what else can you remember?" A asked." It's important, you'll be questioned by Watari and L again. That's why I'm trying to jog your memory, if you tell me what happened I'll be able to tell them on your behalf."

" I wish I could remember what happened, but my memory is like a jigsaw right now..." Elizabeth sighed.

" It's alright, I'm sure the blank parts of your brain puzzle with slot themselves back together at some point." A chuckled and got up from his chair. " I've got to go now, I was only meant to be checking up on you for Watari. But I ended up sitting with you for half an hour, I kind of ate most of your grapes though. I'm sorry about that, they looked delicious just sitting there in a bag doing nothing."

" I had grapes?" Elizabeth asked.

" Yeah, they were purple seedless grapes." A replied, he rested his hands on the side of the bed and smiled at his friend. " The ward nurses at the orphanage are pretty good when it comes dietary needs, they always make sure that when a student is sick they get plenty of fresh fruit and drinking water. It's nice knowing they care that much about the children's health here, but sweets are a must for recovery."

" I guess so..." Elizabeth muttered.

" Why don't you try to relax, you'll need your rest for when your Aunt get's here." A smiled with a chuckle. " She's been frantic over what happened last night, I've never seen Watari hang up so fast on anyone after he'd spoken to your Aunt. She's a firecracker, you know for an old lady dude!"

" My Aunt Thora is coming to visit me?" Elizabeth asked, she leaned on her arms before she slowly sat up in the bed. " I need to get dressed, she disapproves of me sitting around in my nightie in the daylight hours!"

" But you've got an excuse to lounge around in your nightwear, you've just lived through a traumatic event." A said. " So just relax and enjoy it for once."

" Okay, I'll enjoy it just this once even if it's not ladylike." Elizabeth said while pulled the blankets away from herself and swung her legs over the side of the bed . " I need a drink of water, would you get me a glass of water please?"

" Sure, I'll grab you a glass and a jug of water from the nurse's kitchen." A replied before he made a gap in the curtain around the bed area." I'll be right back!"

A disappeared behind the blue curtain of hospital's curtain track, she touched the back of her head and winced when her fingers brushed against something that felt like a scab on the back of her head. Elizabeth looked around the cubicle, there was an over bed table at the end of bed with a sick bowl and many rolled up bandages inside of it. She turned her attention to the cabinet next to the bed, there was an half eaten bag of grapes on the cabinet.

" I'll get you some more grapes, I promise!" A said from behind the curtain. " I've brought you a few books from the library too, I'm not sure which ones you've read though."

A soon returned and place a jug of water on the end table, he then poured her a glass of water. But someone giggling from behind the curtain caught their attention, they weren't alone. A pull the blue curtain back and sighed deeply to himself, a girl with long blonde hair was standing behind it. The girl walked into the cubicle, she was carrying vase full of pink roses. She had dark brown eyes and was quite skinny, she looked very familiar to Elizabeth.

" Don't I know you?" Elizabeth asked.

" Yeah, I met you about a month ago when you delivered a parcel for Watari." The girl replied. " I'm Nonie, I'm the girl who took the parcel from you and delivered it to Mr Ruvie. The roses are from Watari, he said they would brighten up the cubicle and make you feel more at home while you stay here for another night."

" Are you the girl from the gate?" Elizabeth asked, she took the glass of water from A's hand. " But if I remember correctly you couldn't talk, you were using sign language to communicate with Backup when I delivered the parcel. Am I right?"

" Yeah." She nodded.

" Your accent doesn't sound English, where are you from?" Elizabeth asked.

" I'm from Canada originally, but I've got English and Irish blood running through my veins." She replied before she placed the vase on the cabinet. " I'm year young than A, he's my..."

" Nonie! We've got to go..." A Interrupted her. " Watari wanted to see us both in his office before 4pm, don't you remember?!"

" A is your what?" Elizabeth asked.

" It's not important! We really need to go now, come on Nonie!" A said with a nervous laugh, he placed his hands on Nonie's shoulders and led her out of the cubicle. " I'll come back at tea time with some more grapes, get some rest until then!"

" Bye!" Nonie yelled.

Elizabeth watched them both leave the cubicle, she had no idea what was wrong with A. He seemed like he didn't want Nonie to finish her sentence, it was very strange. She slid from the bed and walked to the bottom of the bed, she took a sip of her water while she looked through the books. She chose a book called Treasure Island, she liked the front cover of the book. But she jumped when she heard a voice come from somewhere around the room, she couldn't see anyone.

" Finally, you've woken up!" The voice said. " I thought for a moment I would have to hide until midnight before you woke up, it didn't help much with Alternative visiting you."

" Hello, who's there?" Elizabeth asked.

" You wouldn't believe how loud he eats, he was constantly passing gas while you slept which wasn't very amusing for me." The voice said. " He can be vile at times, he's got no manners at all if you ask me. Yet you've chosen to be his friend instead of mine, that puzzles me... "

Elizabeth looked up from the book and saw Backup standing at the other end of the bed with a smirk on his face. Her eyes grew wide when he held a small jar of strawberry jam towards her, he then took a packet of cookies from behind his back before he placed them down on the table at the bottom of the bed.

" I brought you a present, I thought you may be in need of something sweet after your accident." Backup said. " Tell me, how does your cranium feel after your collision with the door handle?"

" My head hurts, but thank you for the present." Elizabeth replied before she got back into bed. " I need to rest, so if you would please excuse me while I relax. I'm meant to be getting some bed rest, but take a seat if you plan on keeping me company for awhile."

" I don't plan on staying, I just wanted to check on your lifespan..." Backup smirked. " You're a very peculiar human, why is your lifespan frozen? Does it mean something important or are you broken in some way?"

" Don't start that lifespan business again, I don't believe that a person can know when someone is going to die!" Elizabeth sighed and opened the book. " Just go if that's all you plan to talk about, but you can stay if you tell me what happened in L's office?"

" You can't remember what happened in L's office?" Backup asked before he closed the curtain around the cubicle. " How delightful, I find that quite amusing that you can't remember about how you saved me or maybe saved yourself from The Midnight Slasher. How ironic, don't you think?"

" I saved you?" Elizabeth asked.

" Yes, you pulled me away from the window before you fell.." Backup replied, he walked to the other side of the bed while he ran his finger tips along the blankets." He pulled a very large steak knife from his mackintosh coat, I didn't get a chance to see his face before Watari shot him dead with his sniper rifle."

" A sniper rifle?" Elizabeth asked.

" Watari is very skilled with rifles." Backup replied with a smirk. " A single bullet to the back of that monster's head, the bullet passed straight through his skull. His blood splattered across the window like paint being flicked from a brush, he didn't even get a chance to scream. He was given a warning shot by Watari, but I guess he was to determined about finishing his game after all of those long years."

" How awful..." Elizabeth muttered.

" It wasn't awful at all, I've never seen anyone get shot at close range before which was fascinating to me!" Backup smiled. " It's given me the thirst to look up criminal psychology, I want to know what makes a person commit crimes or murders!"

" You're twisted..." Elizabeth frowned. " Why would you want to learn about things like that?"

" Because I want to be the best, I want to be number one!" Backup replied. " I want to achieve as much as possible while I'm still young, I want unlimited knowledge about everything in this world!"

" Okay, good luck with that I guess..." Elizabeth said.

" I don't need any luck, I make my own luck!" Backup chuckled.

Backup looked up at the ceiling and then down at the floor, he soon disappeared from her view. He had fallen onto his knees, she had no idea what he was up to. Elizabeth sat up in the bed and watched him crawl underneath the bed in the next cubicle, his behaviour was puzzling.

" Where are you going?" Elizabeth asked.

The curtain of the cubicle was drawn back, a nurse walk into the cubicle with Rose following not far behind her. Elizabeth jumped out of the bed and pulled Rose into a hug, she was happy to see the housekeeper.

" You little rascal, you've had me and your Aunt worried sick!" Rose said before she pulled the young girl away from her. " I was dreadfully worried when we got the call about your accident, something about you playing pirates with a few other children in one of the offices and you fell off a desk! My heart was in my throat, don't ever do anything like that again!"

" I was playing pirates?" Elizabeth asked.

" Yes, but Mr Wammy told me that you're suffering with a mild case of short term memory loss right now." Rose replied, she cupped the girl's face with hands. " My poor girl, how is your head feeling?"

" My head is fine, well it's kind of sore right now..." Elizabeth replied. " But you're here now! I got told that you were going to visit me today, where is my Aunt Thora?"

" She's with Watari, but she will be along soon to see you." Rose replied. " My poor little Elizabeth, I don't know what I would have done if I lost my little kitchen assistant!"

" You're weird..." Elizabeth smiled.

" Pish posh!" Rose laughed before she gave her another hug. " I've brought you a box of chocolates and some of your favorite soup for your dinner."

" That sounds great!" Elizabeth said.

" Also I've packed all of your belongs in the room you were staying in, they'll be brought down here to the ward before you go to sleep tonight." Rose said with a smile. " Remember to have a wash too, clean behind both of your ears or you'll be growing mushrooms from behind them!"

" Rose, you're embarrassing me!" Elizabeth giggled.

" Now then little Miss, let's get you into that bed before your Aunt gets here!" Rose smiled, she then guided her towards the bed. " You're meant to be resting, so get your little tush in that bed!"

Elizabeth climbed back onto the bed, she covered herself up with the blankets and watched Rose sit down on the end of the bed. She listened to Rose talking about what had been going on at home while she had been staying at the orphanage, she even told her about a stray cat that had been hanging around in the cottage's back garden. Elizabeth began to curl a piece of her hair around her finger before she looked away from Rose, her mind began to wander while her housekeeper waffled on about everything that had been happening at home.
