I wrote this fanfiction a very long time ago, it must be nearly ten years ago now. So I thought I'd dust it off and retell this story, it will be nice reliving it again. I wanted to write about the Wammy House, the school always interested me.
I first remember reading Another Note, I immediately took a shining to Beyond Birthday a.k.a BB or Backup. I love the anime series too, it's still holds its own until this very day.
-I don't own Death Note.
-My laptop charger decided to die on me - I'm sorry for any spelling errors and silly mistakes.
-Thank you for the reviews, faves and alerts!
-This opening chapter is from my oc Elizabeth's point of view, my writing style will change after this chapter.
Enjoy!
Chapter 18!
Elizabeth's heart was breaking, she didn't know how to cope anymore. A few weeks ago everything had been fine, she'd had a fun birthday and an amazing day out at the village's museum. Her Aunt had to use her wheelchair, but they had loads of fun and a nice meal in a fancy hotel. She even paid for them to stay at the hotel for her thirteenth birthday, the day had been magical.
Elizabeth's Aunt Thora had passed away last night with her and Rose by her side. She had been reading The Tale of Peter Rabbit to her Aunt before she began to wheeze, she had grabbed hold of Elizabeth's hand and squeezed it tightly. She opened her eyes for a moment and looked at her with a small smile on face, then she closed them for the last time. Elizabeth remembered screaming for Rose, she had been pulled away from the bed by Rose before she tried to help her. But it was too late, she took her last breath at 7:47pm on the 2nd of December 1997.
The doctor had been called, he'd arranged for her Aunt's body to be picked up by the coroner in the morning. Elizabeth had been sent to her bedroom when the coroners arrived at the cottage in the morning, Rose didn't want Elizabeth to see her Aunt's body being taken from her bedroom. But she had heard everything, the wheels of the stretcher on the wooden floor of her Aunt's bedroom and the coroner's footsteps carrying her body down the staircase.
It was now 10am, she had spent most of the night crying. She felt so lost, her eyes were sore and she wanted this pain in her heart to stop. Rose had called into her bedroom a few hours ago, she had brought her a bowl of cereal and hot cup of tea. But she didn't feel like eating right now, she just wanted to be left alone for the day. Elizabeth sighed to herself while she rolled over onto her back, she needed to use the bathroom. She managed to drag herself out of her bed, she tucked her messy hair behind her ears and got changed into her yellow baggy pajamas. She then left her room and stood in the middle of the landing, the cottage was quiet.
" Elizabeth!" Rose called from downstairs. " Will you come downstairs for a moment? I need to speak with you!"
Elizabeth cleared her throat, she told her to give her a moment. She went to use the bathroom first and then made her way downstairs, but she stopped dead in the lounge's doorway when noticed Watari sitting on the sofa. He gave her a smile has he got up from the sofa, he picked his hat up from the coffee table and nodded to Rose. He walked over to Elizabeth and took hold her hands, he then looked down at her with a kind smile on his face.
" My condolences my dear, your Aunt was an inspiring women. She will be missed dearly in the Winchester community. Her generosity will never be forgotten. You should be very proud of your Aunt's achievements. " He said before he let go of her hands and looked over at Rose. " I shall let myself out, I'll call in on you in the next few days. If you need anything in the mean time then just let me. I'll keep in touch over the funeral arrangements has well."
" Thank you Mr Wammy." Rose smiled.
Watari gently touched Elizabeth's arm before he left the lounge, she heard the front door of the cottage close from the hallway. Rose placed a blue china teacup down on a silver tray, she then picked the tray up from the coffee table and walked over to the doorway. She stopped in front of the young teen, she cupped the side of Elizabeth's face with her hand and smiled at her.
" Come my love, let's get you something hot to drink and then we can have a little chat." Rose said in a gentle tone. " We need to discuss a few things, I have something I need to show you."
" What did Watari want?" Elizabeth asked.
" He came to visit us, but you were asleep when he arrived." Rose replied while she left the lounge. " Come and take a seat in the kitchen while I make you some breakfast!"
Elizabeth followed Rose to the kitchen, she then sat down on a chair at the kitchen table and rubbed at her eyes. She listened to Rose moving around the kitchen, everything felt different now without her Aunt around. She looked over at the kitchen counter when she heard a popping sound, the smell of toast wafted through the kitchen.
" Here we go, get something warm down you." Rose said before she placed a hot mug of tea down in front of her. " I've got some bacon in the fridge with your name written all over it, I think you need a proper British fry up this morning. We've got a busy morning ahead of us!"
" I don't think I can face a fry up, can I just have some toast instead please?" Elizabeth asked.
" Of course, you can have anything you want." Rose replied before she returned to the counter. " You've got to keep your strength up, we've got busy day ahead of us. We need to start sorting out your Aunt's bedroom, also we need to go through the funeral arrangements she wrote and I've got to ring some friends of your Aunts in the village. I also need to find the deeds for the cottage, your Aunt kept so many documents for different things. It will take me hours to go through all of her files!"
" Can't I just hide from the world instead?" Elizabeth asked. " I don't feel like facing the world today, I just want to sit in my room and be left alone forever!"
" I know, but you've got to be strong for me too..." Rose replied. " I've worked for Miss Havisham for over fourteen years, she may have been stern and impolite at times. But I came to think of her has my friend and not an employer, I'll miss her too."
" You did?" Elizabeth asked.
" Yes, before you moved here we would take tea together and play checkers in the evenings." Rose replied. " Then you came to live with us and it got busy at times, but we always found a quiet moment at the end of the day to talk."
Elizabeth watched Rose buttering the toast, she was right. She was being selfish, she had been thinking about her own feelings and no one else's. She had to be strong, this is what A meant when he told her to use her emotions. She needed to support Rose and pull herself together, her Aunt wouldn't want her wallowing in self pity. She wrapped both of her hands around the mug and took a slip of it, the hot tea was comforting.
" Rose, what will happen to me now?" Elizabeth asked. " Will you stay here with me and look after me until I'm old enough to take care of myself? I know you were my Aunt's housekeeper and carer, but will you be mine now?"
" That's what I need to talk to you about Elizabeth, that's why Mr Wammy was here." Rose replied." I don't know if you'll like what I'm about to tell you, but your Aunt arranged for you to be sent to The Wammy House after her death."
" What!" Elizabeth said.
" She had written a Will and gave a copy of it to Mr Wammy for safe keeping, he's given me a copy of it too if you would like to read it." Rose said. " It seems that Miss Havisham has sorted everything out for your future, you're a very lucky girl."
" Can I live with you instead?" Elizabeth asked. " I promise I'll be good, I'll do anything you want! I'll wash all the dishes each night before I go to bed too! I don't want to go there, not after what happened there last year..."
" It won't be that bad, you've got friends at The Wammy House and I'm just be a phone call away if you need me." Rose replied before she walked over to the table and placed a plate of buttered toast down in front of her." You'll be educated there too."
" Please can I live with you instead, I'm too scared to live there..." Elizabeth said.
" I really wish you could Elizabeth, I would love for you to come and live with me..." Rose smiled and sat down at the table." But we're not related, I'm too old too adopt you and I have no means to support the both of us. I'll make sure we stay in touch, I'll even come to visit you seeing has I sometimes help out with the catering in the orphanage's kitchen for special business events. You'll get sick of seeing me in the end, you'll be running from me each time I call your name."
" I doubt it..." Elizabeth said.
" Eat up, we've got a busy day a head of us." Rose smiled while she brushed some of the teen's hair behind her ear. " You can help me sort through your Aunt's study if you like, we may find something interesting for you to keep. I always remember you has a little girl wanting to go into your Aunt's study to look at all of her books, but she would never let you touch any of them. Now you've got your chance, would you like to choose a few books to keep?"
" Am I allowed to do that?" Elizabeth asked.
" Of course, most of the books will be sent to charities anyway." Rose replied.
" Rose, may I read my Aunt's Will?" Elizabeth asked.
" Of course, you've got a right to read it." Rose replied.
Rose took an envelope from her apron pocket, she placed the envelope down on the table and got up from the chair. She told Elizabeth she was going to start sorting out the study, there was a lot of filing cabinets in the study. She also had to clean her Aunt's bedroom too. Some people from the hospital were coming by later to pick up the ventilator machine and a few other bits of hospital equipment. Elizabeth opened the envelope and took the folded up letter from it, she then began to read it quietly to herself.
" Being of sound mind and body, I Thora Havisham hereby bequeath my vast fortune and all my earthly possessions to My Great Niece, Elizabeth Mirabella Mayhem..." Elizabeth said, her eyes grew wide while she continued to read the letter. " She will receive my fortune and my cottage on her eighth birthday and not before, until then she shall attend the school of my choice which will be listed below."
Elizabeth couldn't believe that her Aunt Thora had left her the cottage, even more her vast fortune. She read the rest of the Will and carefully put it back into the envelope when she had finished reading it. Her Aunt had also left Rose over £30,000 for all the years she had worked for her, she would now have some means of support until she found another job. She took a slice of toast from the plate and took a small bite of it before she got up from the chair at the table, she then opened the kitchen's back door and stepped out into the garden.
Elizabeth shivered when she felt the cold of the stone pathway underneath her bare feet, she made her way down the pathway and stopped by wooden bench. She sat down on the bench and took a deep breath of frosty morning air. The sky was cloudy and calm, she hoped that her Aunt was happy wherever she was in the sky right now.
The Funeral
Today was the day of Elizabeth's Aunt Thora's funeral, she had arranged a very small gathering of her close friends and business partners at a church called St John the Baptist Church in the village. The service wasn't very long, there were a few hymns and prayers said throughout the service by the vicar. She was buried in her family plot on the church's grounds with her Mother and Father, the service had been pleasant.
Elizabeth didn't even know that her family had a family plot until then. She had made a little bouquet of flowers from the cottage's garden to lay on her Aunt's grave, she thought it would be a nice idea because her Aunt loved her garden very much. Not many flowers were in bloom in the winter months, but she had found some lavenders, winter roses and fairy primroses growing near the back of the garden. There was no wake after the funeral, all the guests just left quietly after she was buried.
Watari had driven Elizabeth and Rose back to the cottage, he was going to come back later to pick Elizabeth up. She needed to finish packing her belongings, she wasn't really sure what she would be allowed to take with her. She had packed all of her clothes yesterday, she now had to decide what else she needed to take with her. She was given a cardboard box, it was medium sized and Rose told her to put her personal belongs in it.
Elizabeth had put all of her photo albums and her photographs she kept on the wall near her bed in the box so far, also her jewelry box. She decided to take a walk around the cottage to see if there was anything small she could take with her has a keep sake. She found some little dormouse figures and a photograph of her Aunt with her Grandmother when they little girls. She returned to her bedroom and wrapped the figures in some newspaper and placed them in the cardboard box with the photo frame. She gathered a few more of her belongings and placed them in the box before she sellotaped it up.
Elizabeth carried the box downstairs and placed it down near the front door, she then took her red coat from the coat peg. She stood in the doorway of the kitchen and thought about all the fun times she had in this room. The kitchen always felt like the heart of cottage, she was going to miss this place.
" Have you nearly finished?" Rose asked from behind her. " Mr Wammy said he would be here by 6pm. You need to make sure you have everything."
" I just need to bring my bags down, then I'll be ready to go." Elizabeth replied before she turned around to face her. " What will happened to the rest of my Aunt's belongings like the furniture and figurines? Will they be sold or thrown away?"
" Most of your Aunt's belongings will be going to charities, but everything you see in this cottage belongs to you." Rose replied with a smile. " The furniture will be put into storage and taken care of until you need it, the cottage with be checked and maintained. You don't have to worry about a thing, everything is being managed for you until you're eighteen."
" What about the garden?" Elizabeth asked. " Who will tend to it when I'm gone? I don't want it to be left to die, I want it to be taken care of for my Aunt because she loved her garden dearly!"
" Sshh my dear, everything will be fine." Rose replied, she walked over to her and took hold of her hands. " You don't have to worry about the cottage, I'll come to check on it and make sure everything is in order. But for now you've got to look to your future, that's what your Aunt would have wanted. Maybe you'll have a family of your own someday or a great career has a makeup artist."
" I don't want a family, you have to share your stuff with them..." Elizabeth said.
" Oh my dear, I'm going to miss you!" Rose laughed.
" I'm going to miss you too." Elizabeth said with a smile. " Can I come and visit you soon?"
" Of course, I would love you to come and visit me." Rose smiled before she pulled Elizabeth into a hug." I live about thirty minutes away from The Wammy House in a little cottage I brought with the money your Aunt left me in her Will. I'm thinking of turning it into a little country tea house. I'm going to be the boss for change, what do you think of that?"
" That sounds amazing, it will be the best tea house in town!" Elizabeth replied and pulled herself away from her. " I should get my bags from my bedroom now, it's nearly 6pm. I won't be a moment, then I can take one last look around the cottage before I leave."
" Okay, if you need me I'll be in the lounge packing the last of the figures." Rose smiled. " Go on, you don't want to keep Mr Wammy waiting for you. I know what you're like after all of these years, your moments can turn into minutes."
Rose a smiled and left the kitchen. Elizabeth hurried upstairs and got her bags from her bedroom, she then took one last look around. She closed the door behind and walked across the landing before she entered her Aunt's bedroom. The hospital had picked up the machinery earlier, the room was now tidy and most of her Aunt's belongings were in boxes. Elizabeth looked over at the dressing table, everything her Aunt had used in her day-to-day life was still laid out on her dresser. She noticed a few bracelets she use to wear on it, she walked over dresser and picked them up. She put them on her left wrist and looked over her shoulder when she heard a knock at the front door. She took a bottle of her Aunt's favorite perfume from her dressing table and hurried out of the room, she then stopped at the top of the staircase.
Rose opened the front door and Mr Wammy took his hat of has she greeted him, she then invited him inside of the cottage, He walked into the hallway and smiled at Elizabeth before she walked down the staircase to meet him, she told him that the box at near the door was some of her belongings. He picked the box up from the floor and told her to meet him at his car when she was ready to leave, he then left the cottage.
" Thank you." Elizabeth said.
Elizabeth watched him leave and she placed her bags down on the floor. She wrapped her arms around Rose and snuggle her face into her shoulder, she was going to miss Rose. She had become like her second Mother to her over the years, she had always been there for her and made her smile when she was feeling down.
" Will you be okay here by yourself tonight?" Elizabeth asked.
" I'll be fine, one of your Aunt's old friends is coming over in awhile to keep my company." Rose replied before she pulled the young teen away from her. " I'll call you in the morning to check up on you. Mr Wammy said he would put a telephone in your room for your personal needs."
" Do you have the number to that telephone?" Elizabeth asked.
" Yes, I've got it written in my phone book." Rose replied, she then softly kissed Elizabeth's forehead. " You better take care of yourself and remember to wash behind your ears, you'll be growing mushrooms behind them if you're not careful!"
" Also clean my teeth and make my bed each morning, I know the rules already!" Elizabeth smiled and held her wrist in front of Rose's face. " I took these bracelets from My Aunt's bedroom, I hope it's okay for me to take them."
" Of course, I was going to give them to you before you left anyway." Rose said. " You better get going, it will be your bedtime soon. Do you have everything you need for now?"
" Yes." Elizabeth nodded.
" Good." Rose said with a kind smile. " I guess this is goodbye for now, my dear."
" I'm going to miss you so much!" Elizabeth said, her bottom lip began to tremble. " I wish I could stay with you, but I know it's not going to happen. The minute I turn eighteen I'm going to hire you to be my housekeeper. We'll look after the cottage together like a family!"
" Be brave little one, I'll be in touch soon..." Rose said. " I bet Mr Wammy is getting cold waiting in his car for you, you better hurry so he can get back to his warm office!"
" Okay, I'll see you really soon." Elizabeth said.
Elizabeth kissed Rose's cheek and picked her bags up from the floor before she hurried out of the cottage, but she stopped for a moment near the tree where the stone faeries stood. She hoped they would be there when she returned someday, she could take them with her but she would have nowhere to keep them. She sighed to herself and met Watari at the gate, he took her bags from her and put them in the back of the car.
" Thank you, sir." Elizabeth said.
" You're welcome." Watari smiled.
Elizabeth got into the front of the car and waved to Rose while she wiped some tears away from her cheek, she was going to miss her friend. Watari got into his car and started it up, he then put his seat belt on before he pulled the car away from the pavement. She took one last look at the cottage and rested her hand on the window while they drove down the country lane, she was going to miss her old home.
