I wrote this fanfiction a very long time ago, it must be nearly ten years ago now. So I thought I'd dust it off and retell this story, it will be nice reliving it again. I wanted to write about the Wammy House, the school always interested me.

I first remember reading Another Note, I immediately took a shining to Beyond Birthday a.k.a BB or Backup. I love the anime series too, it's still holds its own until this very day.

-I don't own Death Note.

-My laptop charger decided to die on me - I'm sorry for any spelling errors and silly mistakes.

-Thank you for the reviews, faves and alerts!

-This opening chapter is from my oc Elizabeth's point of view, my writing style will change after this chapter.

Enjoy!

Chapter 20!

Christmas had come and gone, it was now a new year. It had been Elizabeth's first seasonal holiday she had spent without her Aunt and Rose around. The holiday with the children at the orphanage had been different, but she had enjoyed it. Watari had given all of the children Christmas presents, he's a very kind and thoughtful man. He had called Elizabeth to one side on Christmas morning, he had given her a little box which contended her Mum's butterfly necklace. Her Aunt Thora had given it to him for safe keeping, he told her that she had delivered the necklace to the orphanage the year before with a copy of her Aunt's Will. She must have known she didn't have long left, she had arranged everything in secret without her knowledge

Taking her biology and chemistry books from the bed she got ready for her first lesson of the day, it began at 9:30am. Elizabeth hung her bag over her shoulder and left her room, she then made her way down the corridor. The science lab was on the other side of the building, she had met up with A and Nonie at the bottom of the staircase in the main hallway. They always walked to class together on Monday mornings.

Nonie had calmed down since the prank she had pulled on Elizabeth last year, she had even been nice to her on the odd occasion. She was only being nice to her because A was with them, but she had caught Nonie glaring at her in lessons with a cruel expression on her face sometimes. She mostly sat with Backup in classes which is even worse. She had overheard them talking about horrible things once in class, they had been talking about how many ways you can kill a person with a knife.

Today was different, it seemed like Nonie wasn't joining them in science class. She was going to spend some of the morning with Watari in his office. A had told her that she was going to take some IQ tests, apparently she had been doing really well in criminology class. He thought that she may have a chance of becoming the third successor of L, but they wouldn't know until her IQ test results were back.

They said goodbye to Nonie before they walked into the science lab, they took their seats at the back of the classroom and took out their exercise books. Elizabeth leaned on her hand while she looked over at the wall clock above the teacher's desk, it was now 9:19am. A sneezed which caught her attention, he wiped his nose on some toilet roll and took his pen from his pocket. A few other students entered the classroom, they also took their seats and talked quietly amongst themselves.

" Do you have a cold coming?" Elizabeth asked.

" No, I just got a whiff of someone's perfume..." A replied before he put his toilet roll back in his denim jacket pocket. " It smells terrible, can't you smell it? The perfume's scent is like roses and lemons mixed together. It smells like the window cleaner they use in the corridors."

" I can't smell anything, you must be imagining weird scents again." Elizabeth replied. " Maybe they've cleaned the windows in the classroom this morning or one of the other students ate some fruit before they came to class."

" No I'm not imagining anything, someone in this class smells weird..." A said, he got up from his chair and looked around the room. " I'm going to open a window, the smell is kind of making me feel nauseous. I'll be back in a bit."

A walk over to the window and opened the it wide, he then stuck his head out of the window. Elizabeth sniffed at piece of her hair before she twirled it around her finger. Her hair smelt like lemons, he must be able to smell her new shampoo the orphanage had given her. She sprayed herself with some vanilla perfume from her bag and quickly put it away when A returned to the table, she then opened her book.

" She takes after me you know, intelligence runs in my family." A said while he drummed his pen against his book. " Well maybe not after me, it must come from my Father's side. He was chemist at the hospital in Stafford, he had degrees in biochemistry and medicine."

" That's interesting." Elizabeth said.

" I remember looking through his medical books once when I was a kid, I never use to read them. I just looked at the pictures because I thought they were cool." A said with a smile. " Do you ever look at pictures in books instead of reading them or is that just me?"

" I like looking at cook books and drooling over food pictures." Elizabeth replied before she looked at him. " That's cool too, right?"

" I guess it's cool if you're going to cook something, but I call it being greedy and preparing yourself for lunch." A replied with a smile. " How about your Dad? You've never mentioned him before, what did he do?"

" I'm not sure, I've never met him or seen a photograph of him." Elizabeth replied. " He left my Mum when he found out she was pregnant, I wasn't planned you see. I know his name was Jacob Preston and I've got the same coloured eyes has him. Is your Dad still alive?"

" I don't know, it's confidential information." A replied with a sigh." Look sharp, Miss Carla is here!"

Miss Carla place her pile of books down on her desk and took a pair of glasses from the bag before she hung it on the back of her chair. A few more students rushed into the classroom. Backup took his seat at the front of the class, he wasn't allowed to sit near Elizabeth or A anymore. He had been annoying them when they were trying to do their work. He normally sat with Nonie, but today he was sitting by himself.

" Good morning class, I hope everyone is feeling refreshed from the holidays!" Carla said while she picked one of her books up from her desk. " I want your minds to be wide awake and ready to absorb today's lesson! But who can remind me what we were learning about before Christmas? No shouting out, raise your hand if you know the answer! Yes, Autumn."

" Nucleic acids!" Autumn said.

" That's correct! Nucleic acids are the molecules that make up DNA, an extremely important substance that all cellular organisms use to store their genetic information." Carla said with a smile. " The most common two nucleic acids are called? I would like to see an array of hands if you know the answers! Yes, Adèle."

" Ribonucleic acid!" Adèle said.

" Very good, it's also known has RNA." Carla said. " But what's the meaning of ribonucleic acid? Maybe you Sister will know this one Adèle. Pay attention Elèanore when I'm talking!"

" Sorry, Miss Carla!" Elèanore said.

Elèanore turned around on her chair and raised her hand before she smiled at the teacher. She glanced at Adèle sitting next to her, they were identical twins. But Adèle had brown hair and Elèanore had blonde hair, they both had dark brown eyes though. Elizabeth had spoken to them more than once since she moved to the orphanage, they were smart and quite polite. They had different personalities. Elèanore loved reading and Adèle enjoyed painting her nails, they were very different from each other.

" Ribonucleic acid is a family of large biological molecules that perform multiple vital roles in the coding, decoding, regulation, and expression of genes." Elèanore said." Like DNA, RNA is assembled has a chain of nucleotides, but it's usually single stranded."

" Excellent!" Carla said with a smile. " But what about the other nucleic acid, can anyone tell the name of the other nucleic acid?"

" Deoxyribonucleic acid or more commonly know as DNA." A said while he pointed his pen at the teacher. " It's a molecule that encodes the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms and many viruses. DNA is a nucleic acid; alongside proteins and carbohydrates, nucleic acids compose the three major macromolecules essential for all known forms of life."

" Correct, well done Alternative! But would you raise your hand next time and not point your pen at me." Carla said, she turned around to face her wipe board and took her board pen from it's holder. " I would like everyone to do a thousand word assignment on nucleic acids, I hope everyone has been taking notes so far. But in a short while I'll be showing you diagrams and photographs of the genetic makeup of DNA, I'll be handing out copies of them so you can have a closer look at them and use them for your assignments."

Miss Carla began to write on the wipe board. Elizabeth looked down at her exercise book and sighed deeply to herself. She was going to struggle with this assignment, she didn't have a clue when it came to chemistry. A was already jotting down loads of notes. She turned her attention back to her book and rested her forehead on it before she closed her eyes, her brain was dead.

" Hey..." A whispered, he rested his hand on her back. " Are you alright?"

" I can't do this, it's too hard..." Elizabeth whispered back. " I'm going to struggle with this assignment, I wish I was at normal public school again even if they made fun of me and called me snobby pants."

" I'll help you write it later, we'll have a late dinner if you want and do our assignments in the library." A whispered." I'll even bring some before dinner snacks, I'll make sure you get good grades in chemistry. I'll be your mentor from now on in each class you need help in, I'll get you through chemistry."

" Thank you, I appreciate that..." Elizabeth said, she lifted her head up from her book. " I better start taking notes before we get caught talking, I don't want to get you into trouble again."

A gave her a smile before he continued to write notes down in his book, she was glad to have a friend like him. She looked back over at the board and began to copy the notes Miss Carla was writing on the board, she really hate chemistry class.

A Few Hours Later

The day passed quickly, it was now 3:38pm. The days lessons were now over until tomorrow. Elizabeth had gone back to her room after her last class which was gym, they had been teaching the students how to defend themselves with simple karate moves. It was easy for some of the students because they had been practicing karate for years. Elizabeth was a beginner, she ended up being thrown on the gymnastic mats more times than throwing someone over her own shoulder.

Elizabeth showered and changed into some fresh clothes, she then tied her hair into a plait. She grabbed her bag and a chocolate bar from her dresser draw, she soon left her room. She hurried along the corridor and down two flights of stairs, it wasn't long until she entered the library. A was sitting at a table in the middle of the study area, he was writing in his exercise book while he ate some of his favorite Walkers English cream toffee. She smiled to herself and stopped next to the table, it looked like he was halfway through his assignment already. She cleared her throat and placed her chocolate bar on his book, he soon looked at her with a smile on his face.

" Hey Izzy, you're late!" A said before he turned his attention back towards his book. " I've been waiting for you for over an hour now, what took you so long?"

" I took a shower, I had gym class and got all sweaty." Elizabeth replied.

" That doesn't sounds pleasant, I'm glad you took a shower before you met me then." A chuckled.

" I didn't know if you'd be here yet, you're normally the late one when we plan to met up, I'm normally the one waiting for you." Elizabeth said, she placed her bag down on the table." I thought I'd be the early one for once, but it seems like you've beaten me to it this time. Have you heard anything about Nonie's tests yet?"

" Not yet, I think she'll get them back in the next few days." A replied." Take a seat, I've nearly finished my nucleic acids assignment and then I'll help you with your assignment. How did the rest of your classes go today?"

" Good, I think or I hope they went well." Elizabeth replied, she sat at the table and got her books from her bag. " I struggled in mathematics though, do you know anything about algebra? I don't understand any of it. What's a+ (b + c) = (a + b) + c mean in numbers?"

" 2 + (3 + 4) = (2 + 3) + 4..." A replied, he closed his exercise book and crossed his arms on the table. " Have you been doing algebra in maths or something?"

" No, I was testing your mathematical knowledge in case I needed it in the future." Elizabeth replied with giggle." So, where shall we begin with my assignment?"

" I don't know, which nucleic acid do you want to write about first?" A asked. " Deoxyribonucleic acid or ribonucleic acid? If I was you I'd start with ribonucleic acid, most students begin with deoxyribonucleic acid which I always think is the wrong decision."

" Okay, so I should write about DNA first?" Elizabeth asked.

" Yeah, it's the easiest one out of the two. Also put something about DNA blending, it just show the teacher that you went the extra mile when you were studying..." A replied, he got up from his chair. " DNA blending is basically DNA molecules which often have a preferred direction to blend, but I'll tell you more about that later when you've written something down about deoxyribonucleic acid first. Any questions so far?"

Elizabeth shook her head at A, she got her pen from her bag and opened her exercise book. She read some of the pages in the chemistry book and began to write in her book. A sat down next to her at the table, she rested her finger tip on a page of her chemistry book and read through the paragraph.

" My Dad is alive you know, he lives in Germany." A quietly said." His name is Braiden Jeffrey Tayler, he'd be about thirty-four now. But I don't care about him or anything, he dumped me and my family for another woman. I shouldn't really be telling you any of this, its confidential information after all. But I think I can trust you seeing has you're my best friend and you told me about your Dad. I never get to talk about my family with anyone..."

" Really?" Elizabeth asked, she looked up from her book at him and leaned on her hand. " Have you ever tried contacting him before?"

" No, I don't think it would be a wise decisions seeing has I'm a successor to L. My birth records have magical disappeared, there's no information in the outside world about me that can be traced anymore." A replied. " I don't know if he would even want to see me anyway, I'm not even sure if he knows about what happened to my Mum and Sister yet. He didn't even make contact with my Mum after he walked out on us, I don't know if I could ever forgive him."

" Oh, I see..." Elizabeth said, she turned her gaze back towards her book. " I don't even know what it's like to have a Dad, I've grownup without one. I've always been surrounded by women and never men, but I would like find him someday if I had the chance."

" What if he doesn't want to be found?" A asked.

" Then it's his loss, that's what my Mum use to say to me when I asked about him." Elizabeth replied, she began to write in her book again. " My Mum was all I needed when I was little, she was my Dad and Mum rolled into one. But I miss her and my Aunt Thora, they were my last links to my real family bloodline."

" But you've got me, Backup and Nonie. We're sort of like a little family..." A said. " I know we're not related by blood, but that counts for something when you're living in an orphanage."

" I guess so, but Nonie doesn't like me..." Elizabeth sighed and looked at him. " I don't even know why she hates me, I thought we'd sorted out all of that jealously stuff last year. She's even started giving me funny looks in classes, I think you'll have to start sitting next to her in classes from now on."

" Don't let her get to you, it's nothing personal." A smiled.

" Let's not talk about families or Nonie anymore, I need to concentrate on my assignment." Elizabeth said. " Would you care to explain to me about DNA molecules and the blending stuff you mentioned to me in more detail?"

" Sure, I better get my thinking cap on then!" A replied, he pulled his chair closer towards her and turned the chemistry book's pages to page thirty-five. " Alright, so DNA molecule are basically encodes of genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms and many viruses."

Elizabeth listened to him explaining DNA molecules to her, she sometimes wonder how he got so smart. He was like a walking cyclopedia, he knew everything when it came to chemistry and genetics. She began to jot down a few notes on a separate sheet of paper, she was happy to have a friend like A in her life.
