A/N An ANONYMOUS reviewer wrote: "This sounded really interesting and turned out to be very disappointing. You do nothing but change the names and a word here and there. The Doctor feels totally OOC because he's nothing like Picard. Though I gotta admit, Ace talking like Data is hilarious." Pfft LOL Well duh, I thought it was pretty obvious that it is basically a rewrite in a DW context. If you don't like it, don't read it! I'm not bothered! If you are too cowardly to reveal your identity, why should I be interested in anything you have to say? On the other hand if you have helpful ideas to share like the lovely reviewer who suggested my trio meet the 8th Doctor, then I'll be pleased to listen.

Chapter 4

Ace and Nita were examining a melted spot in the wall, which was about the size of a basketball with the sonic screwdriver. The Doctor and Nita were listening to Ace's report.

"It's definitely the same radiation that penetrated the TARDIS last time…highly focused, very powerful…but of unknown origin. If this should happen in the Eye of Harmony or the Cloisters, we'll be in trouble, Professor."

"Do you have any theories?" asked the Doctor.

"Ace noticed something too strange to be a coincidence."

"The two radiation events aboard the TARDIS occurred five hours, twenty minutes and three seconds apart. The science base exploded yesterday at almost exactly four times that interval."

"There's a point-zero-zero-one-four second variance we haven't been able to explain yet. But it looks like there's a connection between the radiation bursts and the explosion."

"We don't have the evidence to support that conclusion at this time, Nita." She glanced at the Doctor.

"If we're right, we should be able to predict the next event. We expect it in just over five hours."

"Take every precaution you can to protect the TARDIS' vital areas," said the Doctor. "If you haven't identified the source before the time interval is up, we will leave the area. If you perceive any further danger, advise me immediately."

He left. Nita gave her friend a look that said 'my life may be in your hands'.

"I'll figure it out, Nita."

Nita nodded with silent appreciation and moved quickly off to join the Doctor.

The Doctor was walking down the corridor as Nita caught up with him. The began to walk together. Nita glanced at the Doctor, thought for a second, and then, "Wait."

The Doctor stopped. He looked at Nita with surprise. "Nita," he warned.

"I'm not going to try to influence your decision, Doctor. I know you may have to turn me over to Huldah. I can accept that."

"It hasn't come to that yet."

"But it might, and it's more important to me that you know I didn't do it."

The Doctor looked at his fiancé. He let his guard down. His eye twinkled. "If you could just keep your shirt on, things like this wouldn't happen to you."

"I never even gave him a second glance!" Nita objected, not realizing he was joking.

"Nita, even I gave him a second glance." The Doctor gave her a half grin, and Nita relaxed. "Did I ever tell you about the mayor's wife in Brussels?"

"The one who collected Unit cadets?"

"I did tell you."

"No, you didn't."

The Doctor did a take. How did she know?

"Brussels is lovely this time of year. Isn't it?"

The Doctor and Nita nodded in unison.

"All things considered right now, I'd rather be in Brussels."

"As would I, Nita. As would I."

A long beat. The Doctor searched for the right thing to say without looking at her. "Nita, giving you to them would be like handing over a part of myself."

Nita gave the Doctor a long look until the Doctor was so uncomfortable that he felt he must end this. He continued walking down the corridor.

Nita followed but they didn't look at each other.

In the Holoroom, Revna was speaking while the Doctor, Nita, Huldah and Ace looked on. "After the…the fight, Doctor Raphael came to find me…she was very upset."

"And she told you what happened?" asked Huldah.

"Yes, she told me everything that happened."

Huldah turned to the Doctor. "Based on Revna's deposition, we have reconstructed the incident in Miss Llewcots' quarters as Doctor Raphael described it to him…computer…"

The Doctor interrupted. "Inspector, this is hearsay. He wasn't a witness to this incident."

"Doctor Raphael is dead. Revna's statement is admissible under Kirithion law, and I insist you consider it," said Huldah.

The Doctor frowned. "We will…watch this evidence. And I will weigh it accordingly."

Huldah moved out of the lab. "Computer, run Revna Simulation Three."

The Space Base Guest Quarters were displayed. As the door opened to reveal Raphael, they could see Nita and Darien in the same basic position that they had been in the other flashbacks. His jacket was off, Nita's arms around him…here, though, they were fully embracing in a passionate kiss.

"I knew I'd find the two of you together!" cried Raphael, in a rage. "Do you think I didn't notice how you were looking at each other? I'm not the fool you take me for!"

Raphael moved quickly at Nita. Nita threw a wild punch at Raphael, who quickly ducked out of the way. Raphael smoothly moved under Nita's swing and sent her to the ground with a flurry of several quick punches to Nita's stomach and jaw.

"I'm going to report this, Llewcots. You can count on that."

"You're a dead woman, Raphael," said Nita from the floor. "A dead woman."

The real Nita shook her head.

"Freeze program," said Huldah.

The program froze.

"And then Doctor Raphael came to find you," said Huldah. "Run Revna Simulation Four."

Raphael and Revna were alone in the lab. Raphael was very distraught and upset.

"I want you to take Darien and beam down to Kirithia immediately."

"Doctor, if she threatened you, you shouldn't stay."

"I'm not leaving her here alone. She's capable of anything. I've got to protect our work."

"I'll contact the authorities."

Raphael thought about that. After a beat: "No, I'll take care of that."

He reluctantly moved to exit, as Raphael, her mind working, moved across the room and touched a panel. Revna paused at the door, "Doctor, be careful."

"It'll be all right. Go on."

He left.

"Computer, freeze program," said Huldah. She turned to Revna, "What happened next?"

"I left the base with Darien. The next morning when I heard that the base had exploded, I knew what had happened. She'd killed Doctor Raphael."

"Thank you. You're excused."

He left.

"Doctor, I have established motive, method and opportunity. In any court on Earth, it is enough to warrant the extradition of the accused. I await your decision forthwith."
