I wrote this fanfiction a very long time ago, it must be nearly ten years ago now. So I thought I'd dust it off and retell this story, it will be nice reliving it again. I wanted to write about the Wammy House, the school always interested me.
I first remember reading Another Note, I immediately took a shining to Beyond Birthday a.k.a BB or Backup. I love the anime series too, it's still holds its own until this very day.
-I don't own Death Note.
-My laptop charger decided to die on me - I'm sorry for any spelling errors and silly mistakes.
-Thank you for the reviews, faves and alerts!
-This opening chapter is from my oc Elizabeth's point of view, my writing style will change after this chapter.
Enjoy!
Chapter 23!
Elizabeth groaned when she heard her alarm clocking beeping, she rolled over onto her side and turned it off without even opening her eyes. She didn't want to get out of bed today. It was the 5th of November which meant two things, it was Bonfire night and it was also Elizabeth's fourteen birthday. She opened one of her eyes when she heard a knock at the room's door, it took her a moment to drag herself out of her comfy and make her way over to the door.
" Open up!" Someone yelled.
" Yeah, yeah... I'm coming!" Elizabeth yawned.
Opening the door slightly she peeped through the tiny gap into the corridor. She saw Nonie standing the corridor with a card and yellow balloon in her hand, she had a big smile on her face. Elizabeth stared at her for a moment, she was still half asleep.
"It's time to get up!" Nonie yelled from the corridor. " It's your birthday! I saw a gorilla in the zoo that looked like you or something like that... I can't remember all of that birthday song! Are you going to let me in?"
" Thank you Nonie for your birthday wishes, but I'm in need of a wake up shower..." Elizabeth replied before she pulled her face away from the gap. " I'll be down in half an hour, I just need to do a few things first"
" Come on, let me in!" Nonie frowned. " I've brought you a balloon and I made you a card! Doesn't that earn me some kind of entrance into your room?!"
Elizabeth closed the room's door and told Nonie again that she would meet her in dinner hall in half an hour. She heard Nonie kick the door, she said something about Elizabeth being grumpy and that she would leave the balloon outside of the room. Elizabeth showered and got changed into some clean clothes, she then left her room. She found the balloon tied to the door handle, she opened the card and smiled to herself. Nonie had drawn a little rabbit on it with flowers and trees, it looked like she had worked really hard on it.
" How sweet!" Elizabeth said before she opened the card and then raised one of her eyebrows. " Oh my, that's disturbing..."
Nonie had drawn a headless rabbit inside the card, there was blood squirting from it's neck and the trees around it were burning. She sighed to herself and posted the card underneath her door, she planned to have breakfast first before she took the balloon into her room. It didn't take her long to walk to the dinner hall, it had just turned 8:25am. The students were busy eating their breakfast and chatting, she took a tray from the tray holder. She chose a bowl of mixed fruit, a strawberry yogurt and a cup of tea. She looked around the hall and spotted Nonie sitting at a table the back of the dinner hall. She walked over to where she was sitting and stopped next to the table. Nonie was wearing sunglasses for some strange reason, she had her earphones on. She bobbed her head along to music she was listening to while she ate some of her toast.
" Morning Nonie, I'm sorry about earlier..." Elizabeth said, she tilted her head to one side and knocked on the table. " Nonie! Hello!"
" What?!" Nonie yelled slightly." What do you want?!"
" Never mind..." Elizabeth sighed and sat down at the table. " I'll just eat my breakfast in silence then, you just keep doing whatever you're doing."
" Hello Izzy, I didn't notice you there!" Nonie smirked, she removed her earphones from her head and hung them around her neck." Funny that you didn't notice me being nice to you this morning, I was standing right in front of your face and you didn't invite me into your room!"
" I guess I deserved that after this morning, I apologize for my behavior..." Elizabeth said with a sigh." I was just over tired, I was up till 11pm trying to finish my one thousand word literacy paper on Hamlet last night. I've still not finished it and it's meant to be in by tomorrow. So it will be another late night for me."
" Forget about it, I mean who's actually happy first thing in the morning?" Nonie asked." I'm terrible first thing in the morning, I once punched Alternative in the face for waking me up before my alarm clock went off."
" That doesn't sound very pleasant." Elizabeth giggled.
" Yeah, but he knows not to wake me up before my alarm clock goes off now." Nonie smirked.
" Thank you for the balloon and card by the way, I've not had a balloon since I was a kid." Elizabeth smiled and picked her spoon up from the tray. " Where's Backup and A anyway? It's not like them to be late for breakfast. Especially Backup because I know he likes to get to the strawberry jam before any of the other students."
" They had their breakfast early today, so you're stuck with me until morning lessons begin." Nonie replied. " You're welcome about the balloon, I found it in a tree outside in the garden and thought I'd give it to you. Pretty thoughtful though, right?"
" Oh right, but yes that was very thoughtful of you." Elizabeth replied. " Nonie, can I ask why you're wearing sunglasses indoors?"
" Oh, erm... my eyes are sore this morning!" Nonie replied." I must have gotten some dirt in them or something, they're be fine in a few hours."
" Do you want me to take you to the nurse?" Elizabeth asked.
" Nah, I've already cleaned my eyes out with some eye drops the nurse gave me a few weeks ago." Nonie replied, she popped her last piece of toast into her month. " My eyes get sore and blurry sometimes, I think I may need glasses at some point. But the nurse said it could be due to all the studying I've been doing lately. My eyes have been sensitive to light too and I keep getting headaches. I'm going to ask for an optical examination soon."
" If you need any help just let me know." Elizabeth smiled.
" Thanks. So are you going to the Bonfire display tonight?" Nonie asked while she put her CD player inside of her hoody. " Watari does it every year for the children, but it's kind of lame when you get to your teen years. I maybe fourteen, but I was finding it dull way before then. But my question is are you coming or will you be to busy with your literacy paper? I'm just going to help out with the younger students, they need supervision at all times around the fireworks. Especially this little boy called Mello, he's one little tearaway!"
" What time does it begin?" Elizabeth asked.
" About 6pm, there will be food before the display begins." Nonie replied before she got up from her seat. " I heard that there's someone you may know who will be working in the kitchen tonight, she's named after a flower. I can't remember her name, but she told me she knows you though."
" Rose?" Elizabeth asked.
" Yeah that's her name, Rose Alice Morrissey!" Nonie replied, she put her earphones back on and picked her tray up from the table. " I'm going now, I've got to be at Watari's office by 9am. I'll see you later!"
" See you later." Elizabeth said.
Elizabeth watched Nonie leave the table, she had also stolen the yogurt pot from Elizabeth's tray. She had no idea how Nonie knew Rose's full name, but she was happy that she would get to see her Aunt's old housekeeper again even if it was just for a couple of hours.
A Few Hours Later
The last lesson of the day just ended. Elizabeth hurried back to her room to get changed into some other clothes so she could help out in the kitchen. She normally helped with the cleaning after dinner, but she had asked Watari if she could go earlier today so she could spend sometime with Rose in the kitchen while she prepared the food for the bonfire. She slammed the room's door behind her and threw her bag onto the bed, she then rummaged through the top drawer for the dresser.
" You'll do!" Elizabeth said, she took a blue shirt from the draw. " Now I need some jeans!"
Elizabeth soon found a pair of black jeans, she got changed and clipped her hair up into a messy bun. She then left her room and hurried towards the kitchen. She turned into another corridor and accidentally collided with someone. She stumbled backwards and learned back against the wall before she looked down at a hooded person sitting on the floor. They were leaning back against the wall. The person pulled their hood down, the first thing she noticed was blond hair and then bright blue eyes. She covered up her mouth with both her hands when she realized it was A. He was rubbing the back of his head before he looked up at her with a displeased expression on his face.
" Bloody hell, Izzy! No running in the corridors!" A frowned. " You should know that rule by now, it's one of the first rules you learn when you move here!"
" I'm sorry, are you okay?" Elizabeth asked from behind her hands." I hope I didn't hurt you too much!"
" I'll live, but I may have permanent brain damage now..." A replied before he got up from the floor. " God damn that hurt, you're like a tank when you're rushing around!"
" I said I was sorry! Would you like me to get you a nurse?" Elizabeth asked." I could walk you to the kitchen and make you some tea, extra sugar for the shock."
" I'll be fine, so what's with the rushing?" A asked, he rubbed the back of his head. " I was actually on my way to see you, I've got you something for your birthday."
" I'm sorry, but I need to be somewhere." Elizabeth replied. " I'm on my way to the kitchen, Rose is here and I wanted to see her because I've not seen her for over six months! I'll come and find you later though, but for now I need to be somewhere else!"
" But it's your birthday, surely Rose won't mind you being a few minutes late..." A sighed, he took hold of her wrist and led her back down the corridor. " Come on, it won't take a moment. I swear you'll love your present or I hope you'll love it!"
" Fine." Elizabeth said with a sigh. " You've got ten minutes and then I must go."
" Great!" A smiled.
A lead her along the corridor, they walked up three flights of stairs to the very top floor of the orphanage. She had never been to this part of the building before and by the looks of it no one ever cleaned the upper part of the building. The corridors were dusty. A told her this is where Watari kept all of students personal belongings and their private files. He also told her that each room on this floor had security finger scanners which could be only opened by Watari, Mr Ruvie and L.
" Where are we going exactly?" Elizabeth asked. " How long will this take? I'm meant to be helping out with the cooking for the Bonfire display. I don't think the head of the kitchen will be pleased with me if I'm late..."
" Stop worrying, I'm sure Rose will cover for you until you get there." A replied, he stopped her in front of a door and took a key from his pocket. " We're here now anyway."
" I hope so, I don't want to get in trouble with Mr Ruvie again." Elizabeth sighed.
A unlock the door, he let go of her wrist and opened the door wide. She stood on her tiptoes while she peeped over his shoulder, there was a dark staircase behind the door. Elizabeth shook her head at A while he looked at her over his shoulder with a goofy smile on his face, she didn't want to go up there.
" I'm not going up there, it looks dirty and creepy!" Elizabeth said.
" Oh come on, it's not like it's dangerous up there!" A replied, he turned around to face her. " It's not like you'll be going up those stairs alone, I'll be right behind you. I'm going to guide you up those stairs, you don't have to worry about tripping up or anything."
" What do you mean by guiding?" Elizabeth asked.
" You've just got to trust me. Come on, be a sport!" A replied with a smile." It will be worth it and you'll love it, I promise! I've worked really hard trying to arrange this present for you, don't let all of my hard work go to waste!"
" Okay." Elizabeth sighed.
" Great!" A smiled before he pulled a red scarf from the inside of his hoody. " But I need to blindfold you first, it's a surprise."
" So that's what you meant by guiding..." Elizabeth said, she crossed her arms. " Why didn't you just say that in the first place?"
" Yeah, something like that." A replied.
" Can't I just close my eyes instead?" Elizabeth asked.
" You could, but I think you'd end up peeking and ruining the surprise." A replied, he hung the scarf over his shoulder and held his hands up in front of him. " I'll cover your eyes with my hands instead, they're clean."
" I guess your hands are better than that scarf, doesn't that scarf belong to Nonie?" Elizabeth asked.
" No, it's Backup's scarf." A replied before he walked behind her. " Come on, I don't want any rats or bats or any sticky fingered children stealing what I've got for your birthday. Are you ready?"
" Okay, I'm ready." Elizabeth replied.
A cover up her eyes with his hands, he slowly led her up the staircase and stopped her at the top of the stairs. He told her to keep her eyes closed. She heard a lot of furniture being moved around and then the room went silent. She felt something brush against her hand, she jumped slightly when she heard A telling her that it was him. He took hold of both of her hands and led her forward, he stopped her again and let go of her hands.
" Can I open my eyes yet?" Elizabeth asked.
" Not just yet, give me another moment." A replied.
" Fine, but this surprise better be worth the wait!" Elizabeth smiled.
" Alright, it's ready!" A said. " But I want you to count to three first before you open your eyes, have you got that?"
" Yes, I've got it!" Elizabeth giggled.
Elizabeth counted to three inside of head, she opened her eyes to saw A standing next to an old fashioned looking table with a white cardboard box on it. She walked over to the box and removed the lid from it to find a chocolate cake topped with cream and sliced strawberries. It looked delicious, the smell of chocolate filled her nostrils. Her stomach rumbled, the cake was making her hungry.
" Surprise!" A said with a smile. " Happy birthday!"
" A cake?" Elizabeth asked with a hint of surprise in her voice. " You brought me a whole cake for my birthday?"
" Yeah, double chocolate cake with whipped cream and topped with fresh strawberries!" A replied, he took a knife from the box." I thought it would be the safe bet by getting you something that you could enjoy with your friends. I know you like cake and chocolate. So, do you want me to cut you a slice?"
" Well I guess I've got time for a slice of cake." Elizabeth replied.
" Cool, why don't you take a seat over by the window." A said before he cut into the cake with his knife. " I'll bring your slice of cake, enjoy the views of the orphanage's grounds or something while you wait. You can see for miles up here, I sometimes come here to think while I'm studying. It's so peaceful up here, no one ever comes up here besides me."
" Okay. Will Backup and Nonie be joining us?" Elizabeth asked. " Surely they would like a slice of cake too, did you invite them to join us?"
" I did ask them, they just said maybe." A replied. " Two is better than none though, right?"
" I guess, we'll have to just save them some cake." Elizabeth replied.
Elizabeth walked over to the window, it was a beautiful old arched Victorian window. She sat down on the window seat and adjusted a few of the pillows on the seat before she took a look out of the window. It was getting dark now, but she could see across the whole of the orphanage's grounds. She could also see a few lights far away in the distance, those lights must belong to a few cottages that she remembered passing by when Watari drove her to the orphanage. She pulled her knees to her chest, she leaned back against the wall and looked over at A. He was putting the lid back on the box, he picked two plates up from the table and walked over to her. He held one of the plates towards her, she took the plate from his hand and rested it on her knees.
" The cake looks really delicious, I can't wait to try it." Elizabeth smiled
" Same here, it looks like a sugar coma waiting to happen!" A chuckled and sat down on the window seat. " So, what else did you get for your birthday?"
" I got a card and a balloon from Nonie, that's about it." Elizabeth replied before she cut the cake with her spoon. " She made me a card, it was cute until I opened it. There was a rabbit on the front of the card which she had drawn and then a headless rabbit inside the card with blood pouring from its neck, I guess it's the thought that counts."
" That sounds disturbing, but that's my Sister for you." A chuckled.
" I'm use to your Sister's creepy ways now, it's okay." Elizabeth said, she spooned some of the cake into her mouth and squealed with delight. " Oh my god!"
" What? Is there something wrong with the cake?! " A asked.
" No, this cake is so delicious!" Elizabeth replied while she spooned some more of the cake into her mouth. " It tastes just like the cake Rose use to make me when I lived with her and my Aunt in the cottage. Where did you get it from?"
" Rose made it for me. I asked her a few weeks ago if she would make you a cake for your birthday." A replied, he placed his plate down on the window seat. " I thought it would be nice treat seeing has it's your first birthday at the orphanage, also it's your fourteen birthday. That has to be celebrated, right?"
" I guess, this is a really sweet of you." Elizabeth replied, she spooned some more of the cake into her mouth. " Thank you for arranging the cake, I really appreciate it. Rose always baked me a chocolate cake on my birthday without fail, she use to serve it after lunch with tea and pink wafers. My Aunt never ate any of the chocolate cake though, she was more of a fruit cake and custard person."
" I've not had a pink wafer for years!" A smiled. " But you're welcome, you did the same thing for me on my birthday with the toffee cheesecake you made for me. It was so delicious, remind me to ask you for the recipe at some point."
" I'll write it down for you later. What time are Backup and Nonie meant to be getting here?" Elizabeth asked, she looked through the window. " It's getting dark, the bonfire party will be starting soon. I don't think they'll have time for cake, maybe we should go and find them."
" Yeah about that, I kind of told a few white lies..." A replied. " They're not coming, I just wanted to get you alone for awhile. I don't really get to spend much alone time with you anymore, I kind of miss it just being me and you."
" Oh I see, it's doesn't matter I guess." Elizabeth said, she ate some more of the cake. " I kind of miss it being just the two of us too, we use to have so much fun has children. I guess growing up changes that, we have to learn to stand on our own two feet. Do you ever think where we'll be in ten years time?"
" Sometimes I do, but ten years is so faraway." A replied.
" Where do you think you'll be in ten years time?" Elizabeth asked.
" Probably a private investigator, I want to earn my own money and get the hell out of this place." A replied with a smile. " I want to be my own boss, I don't want to be under the Panda Detective's control forever. I want to make a mark on the world, not in the way L does it but in my own way. I want to help people, but I also want to show them that they don't have to be scared of the dark. I want to show them that there's still good people left in this world that are willing to bend over backwards to help them. How about you? Where do you see yourself in ten years?"
" Living back at my Aunt's cottage with an army of cat babies and maybe running some of my Aunt's charities in her name, I'm really not sure yet." Elizabeth replied before she licked some cream away from her bottom lip. " I also want to go travelling, I want to see all of the wonderful places in the world!"
" Really? I thought you'd have said married with children or something a long those lines." A said with a chuckle. " I see you has a homemaker, but travelling sounds fun."
" I don't know if I want children, you have to share your belongings with them and take care of them forever!" Elizabeth laughed. " But who knows, no one can really tell the future or where we will be in ten years time. I just hope I still know you then, you're my best friend for life!"
" What about Backup and Nonie?" A asked.
" They can be the background figurines." Elizabeth replied with a smile. " I still want them in my life too sometimes."
" Can I ask you something?" A asked.
" Sure!" Elizabeth replied while she continued to eat her cake. " What would you like to know?"
" This may sound weird or just frighten you to death which I hope it doesn't because that would make me sad knowing that I caused your death! But I just wanted to ask you something..." A replied, he cleared his throat. " I don't know how to word what about to say to you, but I'm just going to say it straight out okay?"
" Okay." Elizabeth said.
" Elizabeth, would you like to be my girlfriend or companion?" A asked. " I'm not sure how relationships work at The Wammy House, I'm not even sure if I'm allowed to have relationships with female students here. But I like you, I've like you for a very long time and I respect you has a person. I'm waffling, but I'm so nervous right now!"
Elizabeth stopped her spoon near her mouth, she then stared at him. She slowly spooned the cake into her mouth before she let go of her spoon, she let it hang from her bottom lip. The spoon soon fell from her mouth, she heard it clink on the plate while she continued to stare at him. She watched him raise his eyebrow at her, he had a confused expression on his face.
" That wasn't the reaction I was hoping for Izzy, forget I said anything..." A said before he got up from the window seat. " I'll see you at the Bonfire display, I hope this doesn't affect our friendship."
" Wait, don't go yet!" Elizabeth said.
Elizabeth got up from the window seat and wrapped her arms around him, his body felt awkward in her embrace. She told him not to leave her yet, she wanted him to stay. It wasn't long until she felt his wrap his arms around her. A rested his chin on the top of her head, they stood in silence before Elizabeth broke the silence between them.
" I like you too." Elizabeth said before she pulled herself away from him and looked up at him. " I accept your offer, I want to be your girlfriend."
