NicoleR85: thanks
Lena sat curled up on her bed, paging through her grimoire. Her radio playing quietly in the background. However when she heard
Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more
come through the speakers, she smiled and turned it up. She always did like that song. The brunette carried on going through her grimoire, nodding along to the instrumental section and joining in when the singer started back up.
Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher,
but I flew too high
Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming
I can hear them say
Nathan appeared in the doorway, listening to his half-sister singing away. He smiled, happy to hear it. This meant that things were beginning to get back to normal for her. He knew it was still a long way to go for Lena to be her old self again but the singing was a start.
Carry on, my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry…
Lena broke off when her phone started to ring. She got up from her bed, went over to her desk and picked it up. The number wasn't familiar. "Hello?" she said as she answered it.
"Lena, its me", Sam said.
"Oh, hey Sam!" Lena greeted cheerfully, making a mental note to add his number to her contacts "whats up?" she asked wondering why he called.
"I…uh…just wanted someone to talk to", Sam said quietly.
A concerned expression appeared on Lena's face at the tone of his voice. "Are you ok?" she asked.
"Yeah I'm fine", Sam replied "it's just…." Lena heard him sigh "Dean and I got into a fight. We're going our separate ways for a bit".
"What happened?"
"Our dad happened. Dean and I aren't just going around hunting supernatural beings, we're looking for our father. He went missing a few months back. Long story short: he called earlier with a job for us to do", Sam explained.
"Let me guess. Dean wanted to do this job and you wanted to keep looking for your dad", Lena said.
"Pretty much", Sam said.
"So where are you headed?" Lena asked.
"California", Sam answered.
"Do you need a ride?" Lena offered "I'm on spring break. Got a couple of weeks free. Could make a road trip out of it".
"I appreciate the offer Lena but I'll be ok", Sam said.
"Ok, take care of yourself", Lena said "and let me know when you get to California".
"Will do. Talk to you soon Lena", Sam said and hung up.
"Is everything ok?" Nathan asked, joining her on the bed.
"Yeah, it's just Sam having some problems with his brother. They're apparently going to be going their separate ways for a bit", Lena explained.
"I'm glad we never had any serious problems", the former soldier remarked.
"Me too", Lena agreed "though we hardly ever really spent much time together", she reminded him "despite that promise you made". It was the first time that they had properly met. He had was 16 years old and she'd just turned 9. She had no clue that she even had an older brother until Nathan had shown up on the doorstep with a fluffy chocolate bunny that she called Buttons.
Nathan sighed "I know", he said "I promise that I will look after and protect you from now until my dying day".
The 21 year old hugged him tightly "and I'm going to look after you too", she promised. She moved back and held up her hand, little finger sticking out. "You and me against the world?"
"You and me against the world", he agreed, linking his finger with hers, sealing the very same promise that he had made when he was 16.
It was a few hours later when Lena's phone rang again. "Ignore it, Lena", Nathan said "We're not finished with these tacos".
"I'll just be a minute", Lena said, setting down her knife. She walked over to where her phone was sitting on the coffee table. "Hey Sam!" the brunette greeted, answering it "you get to California ok?"
"Actually I haven't even got on the bus yet", Sam replied.
"Were you having second thoughts?" she asked.
"No. There isn't a bus to California until tomorrow evening", Sam answered.
"I'm sorry to hear that", Lena said "would you like me to come get you?" she asked "we could grab dinner somewhere and you can spend the night at my house".
"Are you sure?" Sam asked "I don't want to put you out or anything".
"I wouldn't have offered Sam if it was going be a problem. Besides, a sofa beats hard floor any day", Lena said.
"That's very true", Sam agreed.
"So does that mean you want me to pick you up?" Lena asked.
"Yes, please", Sam replied.
"Ok. I'll head out now", Lena said. She then asked him which bus station her was at before hanging up.
"You know I'm coming with you, right?" Nathan asked, taking the turning the hob off so that the food didn't burn.
"Wouldn't expect anything less", Lena said before she pulled on her shoes and jacket. She then grabbed her keys and purse and headed out of the room, her brother following.
"Would you like a drink?" Lena asked Sam as they entered the house, a couple of hours later.
"Yes, please", Sam replied, putting his stuff down in the hallway.
"Ok", Lena said and headed for the kitchen, Sam following. "We have coffee, tea, hot chocolate" she opened the fridge "beer?"
"Beer's fine", Sam said. Lena pulled out two bottles of beer, setting them on the counter. She got out the bottle opener, took the caps off the two beers and gave one of the bottle's to Sam.
"Thanks", he said. The witch gestured to the sofa and they sat down.
"I'll carry on with dinner", Nathan said, shrugging off his jacket before he headed into the kitchen area. He picked the knife he'd been using and twirled it around in his hand. Sam eyed it somewhat nervously, his hand tightening on his beer.
Lena rolled her eyes, knowing that her brother did that on purpose to scare him. "Nate, stop freaking Sam out", she said.
"I'm not doing anything", Nathan said indignantly.
"Yes, you are", Lena argued "cos that is the same technique you used on the only guy I ever went out with".
"It's a habit", Nathan said defensively "sorry". He continued making the tacos while Lena and Sam started to drink their beers.
"So do you just live here whenever you have spring break? Or are you just visiting for a bit?" Sam asked.
"Actually, I live here all the time. Whenever I'm not at college", Lena said "this has been my home ever since I lost my parents".
"Lena, I'm so sorry", Sam said, sympathetically.
"Its ok. It's not something I advertise", Lena said.
"If you don't mind me asking, how did they die?" Sam asked.
"It was a break in", Nathan spoke up "Lena was just a baby at the time. Before you ask, I'm not saying anything more about it and neither will she".
"He's a little…protective of me. Aside from my godmother, Nate's the only family I have left", Lena explained. Sam nodded in understanding. He knew what it was like to lose a loved one.
