"Come on, pick up, pick up, pick up," April muttered into her phone, pacing back and forth in their kitchen. How was it possible that she was feeling this way again? She got married, moved on, started a new life without him, how was this still happening? Why did she still get butterflies in her stomach everytime Jackson so much as looked her way, which was becoming really difficult seeing as they were living together in a new city, but still-
"Hello?" a voice cut through her thoughts.
"Arizona! Finally! Gosh, what took you so long?" April let out quickly, running her hand through her hair as she continued to pace.
"Gee, April, I'm fine, thanks for asking!" Arizona chuckled in return.
"I'm sorry," the redhead sighed, "I just- I need you."
"What's going on? Are you okay? Is Harriet?" Arizona's reply was quick. Their friendship was unlikely, but the most stable thing that she had through her time at Grey Sloan, and after. If April needed her, she would be there.
"No, I'm fine, Harriet is fine, it's just-" April stuttered, trying to get her thoughts together. She gently placed her elbows on the kitchen island, cradling her head in one hand, "I think I need to move out. Like I know we agreed we would stay together for a few months at least, just so we could figure things out, but I can't do this!"
"Why, what's going on? Did Jackson do something?" Arizona was confused, after her talk with Jackson, she presumed things would get better, that the two of them would make some kind of progress in their relationship.
"Yes Jackson did something!" April exclaimed, exasperated, "He's always doing something! He makes me coffee every morning, exactly the way I like it. He got a bunch of throw pillows for the living room, which I know was just for me because he doesn't even like throw pillows! He reads Harriet's favorite book to her every single day, and makes those silly voices for each character because he knows she loves it! He touches my back when we move past each other and it literally sets my skin on fire! He looks at me, and it's like we're the only people on the planet! He just- I- how can this be happening again?"
"Breathe, April," Arizona said, a slight smile in her voice, "What's happening again?"
"How can I be falling for him again?" April whispered, tears stinging her eyes, "When I worked so hard to get over him?".
A small pause, then Arizona's voice, just as soft, "Did you, though?" she asked, "Did you get over him?"
"Yes!" April exclaimed. She had resumed her pacing, "Yes, I did, I had to! He was falling for Maggie-"
"I still think that's super gross, by the way," Arizona interrupted, "Like ew, incestious much?"
"Arizona!" April hissed, but couldn't help the laugh that escaped her mouth.
"I'm just saying what everyone's thinking!" Arizona laughed, "And I'm still saying that when I say that you never got over Jackson, and he never got over you."
"But I got-"
"Married, I know, I was there. But you were never in love with Matthew, let's be honest. Jackson, he may be a pain in the ass sometimes, honestly, most of the time, but he's your pain in the ass," Arizona took a breath before continuing, "I know you thought God brought you and Matthew together in your pain, but I don't think that was His plan. That winding road you spoke about, maybe that's the road you and Jackson have to take together."
A million thoughts seemed to pass through April's head. Could she open her heart up to the one person she knew had the potential to either completely destroy it, or keep it safe forever?
"I don't even know if he feels the same about me," April sighed, "And I can't handle opening myself up only to-"
"Oh, he does" Arizona interrupted, chuckling, "He really does."
"Wait, wait, wait what do you mean?" April sputtered, "What are you talking about, did he say something, did someone say something?"
"Kepner," a slightly deeper voice came through the phone, "He loves you, everyone knows it. Get your head out of your ass and do something about it."
"Hi Callie," April laughed, "How are you guys doing?"
"We're good, April," Callie smiled, looking over at her wife and daughter, "We're really, really, really good. And you guys will be too. Just - stop worrying, and actually do something like the adults you are! You both need to stop calling my wife about your relationship and talk to each other!"
"Both? What did he say, you have to tell me-"
"We're hanging up now, Kepner!" Callie's voice called out, "Come visit soon, but sort out your love life first!"
"Hey! We're back from the park," Jackson walked in, one hand holding onto his daughter, the other tightly grasping a couple of daffodils.
"Mommy!" Harriet shrieked, running for the redhead, "Daddy found these flowers for you! He said they were pretty, like you, so we got them-"
"Harriet!" Jackson exclaimed, eyes widening as he rubbed the back of his neck. His tell tale sign of discomfort.
"It's the truth, Daddy," Harriet stated, matter of factly, "I want to go tell Dr. Bear all about the duckies in the pond!"
"Go ahead, sweetie," April laughed, looking at their bundle of joy, "We'll be right in."
They watched as Harriet scampered into her room, excitedly chattering about the day she had. April's eyes roamed the floor before making their way up to his perfect green ones.
"Hi," she said.
"Hi," he replied, gesturing the flowers towards her, "Uh- these are for you, but if you don't want them, that's totally fine too, I shouldn't-"
"I want them," April whispered, maintaining eye contact as she moved towards him, "I really want them."
"Oh, good," Jackson replied, his throat suddenly extremely dry, "I want you to have them."
"Good," April smiled. She put one hand around the flowers, the other on his chest, feeling his muscles flutter underneath her.
"April," he croaked, "I missed you."
"I missed you too," she breathed out, moving closer. His arms wrapped around her waist as both of hers came to play behind his neck. Inch by inch, agonizingly slow, they moved in unison, their lips meeting in a soft, gentle touch.
Home.
