"Hello?" April whispered into the phone, scampering out of the bedroom. She grabbed her floral night robe and tied it loosely around her waist as she retreated to the living room.
"Uh-" a female voice responded, "This isn't Jackson. Did he change his number? That's rude."
"No, no, this is Jackson's phone," April muttered, eyes darting around the room nervously. She hadn't really looked at the screen before answering, in a hurry to get out of there without waking her ex-husband, current… boyfriend? Whatever they had was new, and old, comfortable, yet exciting, and whoever was on the phone was probably someone Jackson had slept with. April wasn't unaware of his past, it was just not something she particularly liked to think about. He had been with so many women, and she was just, just April. Plain, simple, ordinary.
"April?" the voice questioned, "Is that you?"
"Yup," she swallowed, chuckling nervously, "It's me! Good ol' me!"
"You sound the same," the lady's voice had a clear smile in it, "It's Jo! Jo Wilson!"
"Oh my gosh!" April excitedly hopped up from the couch, "Jo! How are you? What's going on? How have you been? I heard about Luna, that's amazing. You're going to be a great mom- I mean, you already are!"
"You really are the same!" Jo laughed, "Still as chipper as ever. I'm okay, Luna is wonderful. I'm happy, I'm finally happy."
"Well, I am so happy to hear that," April smiled. Jo deserved the world. With what Karev had done to her, Jo Wilson proved time and time again that she was a warrior, and it was about time she got some joy in her life.
"Thank you, April," Jo hummed, "I just called to ask Jackson about the waterline in the kitchen, I think it's leaking? Is there someone he used to call about that?"
"Oh, I have no idea," April laughed breathlessly, "I can go get him, though! He was sleeping, which is why I grabbed the phone. I don't know why I whispered though, the man sleeps like the dead." She started back towards their bedroom.
"Don't I know it!" Jo chuckled into the phone, "Whenever I stayed the night, he would literally knock out in like seconds. I was kinda jealous, not gonna lie. The man can literally sleep anywhere, at any time."
April froze. She stayed the night? Like what kind of 'staying the night'? Like work buddies hanging out and falling asleep in the same room, or… something more?
"April, you still there?" Jo's voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Yeah, yes!" April responded, absentmindedly, "Yes, sorry, I'll just go get him-"
"Oh no! Luna, gross!" Jo groaned, "I gotta go, April, Luna just smashed peas all over the bedroom floor, and I'm pretty sure her diaper is full. Just ask him to call me when he gets a minute!"
"Yeah, yeah, I will," April replied softly, but Jo had already hung up.
She had no right to be mad, and she truly wasn't. She was scared. Jo was literally perfect. She looked like a princess; perfect hair, perfect smile, perfect body. She was smart, and had a smart mouth to match. She was everything Jackson deserved. She was more than April ever could be.
"Hey," April felt a soft hand tug on her chin. She looked up to see Jackson standing there, his eyes the perfect shade of green as they surveyed her cautiously. "You okay?" he asked.
"Yeah, yes, yes of course!" April rubbed her hands up and down her thighs, "I'm fine, why?"
"Well, I'm not fine, because I woke up this morning, and you weren't there," Jackson pouted dramatically.
It took everything in April not to swoon at his words, her heart beating rapidly in her chest. She could feel her worries melting away as he pulled her to her feet, drawing her face towards his. How could Jo have not fallen in love with him when he said things like that? She probably did, and he was probably in love with her. Maybe April could design the invitations for their wedding, that was something she was good at.
"You're thinking too loud," Jackson murmured, a small smile gracing the curve of his lip, "What's going on?"
"I don't have the right to ask," April stated, guiltily, moving away from the gorgeous man in front of her, "I know I don't, but I want to know, actually I don't know if I want to know, it's probably better for me if I don't-"
"April," Jackson interrupted, his face growing worried, "What happened?"
"I-" she tried to get out, the words stopping in her throat. Why was this so hard? Why did it feel like her heart was breaking all over again?
"Did you sleep with Jo?" she whispered.
Silence echoed in the room. She was right.
"Oh my god," she let out, breathily, "I'm so sorry I asked, I'm so sorry, I'm gonna take a walk"
"April, wait-"
"No, I just need a minute, when Harriet wakes up, can you give her some orange juice? She likes that in the morning. Oh you already know that, you're her dad, you're the perfect dad, perfect man-"
"April-" Jackson tried once more.
"I'll be back in a bit, I just have to, I need a minute," she grabbed her purse and started towards the door.
"You're not going anywhere," Jackson stated, his tone clear, "You're not running away from me again."
April swallowed, the intensity of his gaze boring holes into her body. She dropped her bag towards her side and sat back down on the couch.
Jackson sighed as he joined her, rubbing his temple with his fingers.
"Yes," he whispered, his eyes staring at the patterned rug at his feet before darting to her face, "Yes, we had an… arrangement."
"An arrangement?" April echoed.
"Friends with benefits"
"Oh."
"But it didn't mean anything!" He stood up suddenly, "I mean, it was just something we needed, you know? It was good, don't get me wrong, but it was just sex."
More silence.
"It was good?" April whispered, eyes shining with tears as she looked up at him.
"April, please," Jackson immediately kneeled on the couch in front of her, "You and I, there was no possibility of us, so please don't be mad, you can't be mad at me-"
"I'm not," she gave him a soft smile, tears slipping down her face, "I'm not mad at all, you're right, I have no reason to be."
"Then what's going on, baby?" he whispered, his heart breaking as he saw her furiously wipe the tears from her eyes.
"You deserve better than me," she breathed, voice breaking.
There's no way she said that. He had to be hearing things.
"Jo is perfect," she continued, "With her gorgeous hair, and smile, and voice that obviously doesn't annoy the crap out of everyone, and I bet she really knows how to… satisfy you."
"Satisfy me?" Despite the serious situation, Jackson couldn't help the chuckle that escaped his throat at her words.
"This isn't funny, Jackson!" April let out, exasperated, standing up and beginning to pace, "She knows more than I do, and she is so much hotter, let's be honest, I am nothing in comparison-"
"Stop," Jackson's voice was stern. She froze in her spot as he rose up to stand in front of her, "You don't get to talk about the woman I love that way."
The woman he what?
"Huh?" April squeaked out.
"I love you," he repeated, "Let's not pretend that's a secret. We all know I do. I love everything about you, even the things I don't like, I love."
She smiled as the words brought them back to that fateful afternoon in the barn when their lives were forever changed.
"And I want you with me," he continued, "I meant what I said then, and I mean it now. I love you so goddam much, April! And yes, sometimes you can be pretty freaking annoying and get on my very last nerve, but you are also the hottest person I have ever known. And I know you're going to argue with me about that, but it's true. God, do you know how many dreams I have had of you? That red hair, perfect skin, not to mention that body-"
"Jackson, stop!" April blushed deeply.
"You still can't see just how incredible you are," Jackson whispered, sitting down on the couch and pulling her onto his lap, "I am so in love with you, it doesn't matter who either one of us is or was with, I was always thinking of you. I will always be thinking of you."
"Just-" He pushed a soft kiss onto her lips, his nose gently rubbing against hers, "Just tell me how I can convince you, how I can show you how much I care about you, I'll do anything to prove-"
"Stop," it was April's turn to be stern, "You don't have to prove anything, Jackson. I love you too. So freaking much. It's like my heart is both pumping overtime and not at all when you're around me. And I get scared because I'm very clearly insecure, but I love you, Jackson. You are everything"
"You are everything," he echoed, his lips returning to hers, "Everything."
"Oh, before I forget!" April suddenly broke away, "Jo's kitchen is leaking, so you need-"
"Yeah, I'll call her eventually, but right now I really need to be with the woman I love," Jackson muttered, his mouth covering April's as he pushed her back towards the couch.
April smiled as her fingers roamed his back, arching into his body. He was his, she was hers. Always. Forever.
