Chapter 6

8 Months Later...

"General, Fort Domvagadon has been attacked."

"How? The Folders should have intercepted them."

"Our Folder reinforcements never got there. The Fort was attacked a few hours after Point Blank."

"But what about the boy we shot? The Hopes would not abandon him."

"They must have. It is safe to assume that he is dead."

"This means all of our prisoners have escaped. The entire Collective, Physic, the Reuwens, Alden Vacker and-"

"And…?"

"Captain, a few months ago we captured a human girl. She is Sophie Foster's twin, and we have been probing her for information about the Black Swan. She is comatose, so we have been using our Telepaths. The Hopes must have freed her."

"Is that such a problem, sir? She is just one girl."

"She helped take down Michael Ryler, the leader of the Neverknown. The Neverknown has been disbanded, partly because of her. But that is not what makes her dangerous. She is a human, raised among elves. Sophie Foster is an elf, raised among humans. If they work together, they could unite humans and elves against us."

"General, that is only if they escape. If the Folders kill them, no one will ever know. You would be unchallenged in your regime."

"Yes, Captain. But we have no way to find them. They will leave Fort Domvagodon long before we get there."

"Sir, we need a public display. Something that will draw their attention. Something that they can't resist coming to."

"Yes. We will lay a trap for them. We must make it seem as if they are safe, and then separate them. We will capture them, one by one. And then the Lost Cities's Keepers will be no more."

Sophie Reuwen's POV

A sharp dagger of light pierced through the darkness. It hurt to look at. The light moved around, twisting, expanding until it revealed faces. They were blurred. But yet they seemed familiar… Who were they? And then everything sharpened.

Sophie's eyes shot open. There were people everywhere around her. Sophie flailed around, but was restrained by strong arms.

"It's all right," someone whispered. "You're safe now."

The speaker of the voice was a boy with dark hair and teal eyes. "Fitz," Sophie rasped.

Fitz looked at the others in surprise. "How does she know who I am?"

"I-I've spoken to you," said Sophie. She scanned the other's faces and found she recognized some of them: Keefe Sencen, Dex, Fitz's arrogant sister. Marella. The Collective. But her eyes landed on the face closest to her. Her own face. It was Foster.

"Where am I?" Sophie asked. Mr. Forkle stepped forward. "Sophie… you've been missing for eight months."

"Eight months!" said Sophie. It was an effort to speak.

"We think you've been in a coma for all of that time," said Squall. "How are you feeling?"

"I'm fine, but how did I get here? Where am I?" said Sophie.

"After the battle on that mountain, you went missing," said Mr. Forkle. "We had suspected the Neverknown had captured you. Right now you are in Fort Domvagadon."

"Where is Michael Ryler?" Sophie asked. "I need to speak with him."

Mr. Forkle glanced at the others. "Michael Ryler is dead. He took a cyanide pill the day after we captured him."

"What are you talking about?" said Foster. "Why does she look exactly like me? How do you know her?"

Mr. Forkle sighed. "You kids ask too many questions." He took a deep breath before continuing. "This is Sophie Reuwen. She is your identical twin sister. She is human, and lived with elves, you are an elf and lived with humans. We had hoped that we would unite humans together with you."

"If she lived with humans, why don't we know about her?" asked Dex. "We would have noticed her disappearing."

"We erased your memories of her, but you still retained some fragments. That's why you fit in with Sophie Foster so easily."

"But why didn't you tell me I had a sister?" said Foster. "Why didn't I learn about her?"

"Because Sophie Reuwen had wished for you to remain separate," said Mr. Forkle. "She didn't want you to be distracted from your missions against the Neverseen."

"That still doesn't make it right," said Foster.

"Can you give our memories of her back?" Dex asked. "I want to remember her."

"Fine."

Sophie Foster's POV

Sophie still couldn't believe that she had a sister. Sophie Reuwen looked so similar, except a little more confident, a little more sure of herself.

Mr. Forkle and Granite closed their eyes. Dex, Marella collapsed back from the flow of memories. Fitz looked a little unsteady. The rest were unaffected.

"I remember," Dex said in wonderment. Marella nodded too. "We were best friends," she said. Fitz just looked at Reuwen. (Sophie Foster had started to call her sister that in her mind.) "I never spoke to you," he said. "Why didn't I?"

Reuwen shrugged. "I guess I just wasn't popular enough."

Fitz looked ashamed. "Sorry-"

"Nothing to apologize for," Reuwen said airily. "I have grown past my schoolgirl crush."

"Have any of us ever seen you?" Linh asked.

Reuwen nodded. "Sometimes I would sneak into the Lost Cities and pretend to be Foster. That day in Atlantis when I was acting weird-that was me. It was also me who asked about that note."

"What note?" Sophie asked. This was so confusing. Her sister seemed like she knew all of the others very well.

"The Neverseen left a note for me," said Linh. "They gave it to me a few months ago and I didn't want to worry you. It said:

Use this to Unlock

Your fateful Legacy

See a Flashback from the past

And you will find Nightfall

The Lodestar plan has begun

The Neverseen shall rise

We've summoned Everblaze

When we return from Exile

The Lost Cities' Keepers will be no more."

"You have a really good memory," Keefe commented. "And this is going to be annoying, figuring out which twin is which. Right now I can tell the difference, but if they were wearing the same clothes it would be a lot harder." Sophie was wearing the normal Foxfire attire while Reuwen was wearing some kind of white suit that clung tightly to her body.

"Who are the Neverknown?" Marella said. "You mentioned them before but you didn't tell us who they were."

"The Neverknown is a human group devoted to wiping out the elves," said Squall. "During the mountain battle we took out most of their forces, but what was left of them grouped up and formed the Folders you are fighting today."

"And we have to take on General Vonswama's armies to free the elves," said Sophie. "We'll need to leave this fort. His soldiers could be here any minute."

"Come on, sister," said Reuwen. "We have a lot to catch up on."
