Chapter 5

Mom. He called her mom. Mary frowned. Could this be….? No. No, it couldn't be her son. How would she have met him before his birth?

Time travel, a little voice in her head said. If she could time travel over twenty years into the future, surely she wasn't the only one who could travel through time? Was this Sam before her? Sam, the son she knew would be at this hunt? But Mary tried to dismiss it because it just didn't make any sense. And besides, Sam has brown eyes, not green. Dean was the one with green eyes, but this couldn't be Dean. Because if this was Dean, then he knew all about the supernatural and Mary couldn't bear the thought.

"I'm not—I don't know what you're talking about," she said at last. For a moment she paused. "Van Halen, right? You know, I've been trying to search for you for a while now. You knew about the fire, didn't you? You told me to not get out of my bed on November 2nd, 1983."

"How are you alive?" the hunter asked. "You burned and—" His eyes widened. "You're a ghost. I thought after Sam and I visited our home house that your ghost left for good, that you went where ghosts go when they die."

Sam and I. Mary met the hunter's eyes, those bright green eyes, and realized why her son Dean's eyes always looked so familiar. And in the moment she knew. She saw those eyes before, saw that nose, those freckles. Because the hunter or psychic named Van Halen was her son, her Dean. She could no longer deny it: the evidence was right in front of her.

"Dean," Mary murmured. "Oh, Dean." She wrapped her arms around him, around that leather jacket that she knew for certain belonged to John. It still has that similar leather smell. It was like coming home.

"How are you alive?" Dean asked again.

"I time traveled," Mary said. "Right before I died in Sam's nursery I…time traveled. I was in a coma for ten days and when I woke up it was the year 2009. I… I should have listened to your warning, Dean. Of not getting out of bed. I'm so sorry. But then I heard Sam's cries and I had no idea what Azazel wanted. I want so bad to kill that son of a bitch."

"Too late. I killed him two years ago myself," Dean said.

"What about your father, Dean? What happened to him? I heard that he… that he died. Of a car accident of all things."

But before Dean could respond Bobby returned with this other guy.

…Sam?

Sam looked up and looked like he just saw a ghost. "Mom? How—?"

"A little case of time travel," Dean said.

Sam ran over to Mary and wrapped his arms around her. Meanwhile Mary felt really, really guilty. It was because of her that both her sons grew up without their mother. It was because of her that Sam had demon blood running through his veins.

But she could make it all up to her sons, couldn't she? If she couldn't go back in time and watch her children grow up in a normal way, then the least she could do was get to know her adult children. And Mary was going to just that.

And soon enough, Mary learned about the looming apocalypse. She would help fight with her sons. Although she wanted so bad to get out of the hunting life and never wanted it for her children, what has happened, happened. And she was going to protect her family at all costs. No matter what.

The end. I wanted to keep this story on the shorter side so its up to your imagination as to why Mary time traveled to the future in the first place (angels, maybe?) I just wanted her to piece together who "Van Halen" was and I decided she could do that through time travel. So that's it :)
