Chapter 7

When Mary opened her eyes, Castiel was no longer sitting in the booth next to Dean. Did he fly away?

"Castiel?" Mary said, frowning. Then, a new voice sent chills down her spine.

"I sent Castiel away for a little while," the voice said. "He'll be in heaven."

Dean rolled his eyes. "Zachariah. The hell do you want?"

"I want Mary Winchester," Zachariah said.

"To bring her back to 1983?" Dean said. "Yeah, well, dickhead, Cas had the same agenda."

"Oh, I don't want to bring Mary to 1983," Zachariah. "I want to keep her here—in 2009. I want to change history."

"You're working for the demons?" Sam said, his eyes widening.

"Oh, Sam. You have no idea what's in store for you. But yes, I am… aligning myself with a few demons. In the end, the archangels Lucifer and Michael will fight once and all. A fair fight."

"What does Mom have to do with the devil and some archangel?" Sam asked

"No," Dean interrupted. "What Sammy means is—what the hell does Mom have to do with the devil and some archangel?"

Zachariah laughed. "Oh, you two will have loads to learn! Wait and see. Now, I just need to take Mary to safe place and end her once and for all…. in this year. Can't leave anything to chance."

Zachariah reached over for Mary, but he wasn't quick enough. Mary had already reached into her pocket and pulled out the shiny demon knife. She thrusted it into Zachariah's heart. Or where his heart would be… if he were human.

"I'm an angel, not a demon," Zachariah said, rolling his eyes. He still crouched over, hissing in pain. "This won't kill me."

"But it will injury you," Mary said. "Long enough for me to make a run for it. Come on boys."

Mary, Sam, and Dean ran out of the diner. They got in the impala and sped off. But when they arrived back at their motel…. well, there was two men waiting for them outside their motel door with vicious black eyes.

"If I were you, I'd stop running," the demon with the black hair said. "It only ends one way."

"Yeah, like this," Dean said, pulling out his demon knife and gutting the demon closest him and then going after the other. When both of the demons were lying on the ground, dead, Dean said, "Let's pack our stuff and get the hell out of this town."

"I can't keep running forever," Mary said. "You heard Castiel. I don't belong in this time. I belong in 1983."

"We'll find a loophole, then," Dean said. "Not like it's been the first time."

"Dean," Mary said, using her "I'm the mother here" tone. "I can imagine how much you and Sam missed me. But you can't change the past. I died. I'm supposed to die."

"Mom—"

"We'll see each other again, in heaven. Castiel said you won't remember my presence until you die. I want you to keep living your life. With me here… demons and angels will be constantly after me and you boys. And while I never wanted this life for my children, as hunters you know how to protect yourself. As much as it upsets me… John needs to learn about the supernatural so he can train you boys."

"Okay," Dean said. "I may not like it, but… okay. I'll miss you, Mom."

Mary went over to Dean and wrapped her arms around him. "I know. But it will be like I was never here to begin with. And we'll still see each other again. "

Mary then hugged Sam.

She let go and turned to both Sam and Dean. "Just remember when I'm gone… when I'm gone you two will always have each other."

Just remember. As if that they will remember that Mary was even here in the first place. "Of course," Sam said. "We always have each other's backs."

"Yeah, I'm always looking after Sasquatch over here," Dean said with a grin.

Mary smiled. "Now, do you know when Castiel will be back after he was, you know… expelled from his vessel?"

"Can take over an hour or longer," Dean said. He then looks at the ceiling, nowhere in particular. "Cas, if you're listening to me, Mom's… here. And she wants to be sent back to 1983."

Seconds later, Castiel appeared in the motel room in his identical trenchcoat. He turned to Mary. "Are you ready, Mary?" Castiel asked.

Mary nodded. "Yes. I'm… ready." She turned one last time to Dean and Sam. "I love you boys."

"Love you, Mom," Sam said.

Dean just ran a hand over his face. "See you, Mom," he said.

"Alright," Castiel said. He placed his arm on Mary's shoulder and, like that, the two vanished from the motel room.
