Hi everyone, here's the next chapter, I hope you like it. Let me know what you think or if there's anything specific you'd like to see. Enjoy!
It was an hour later that Kara woke up.
Screaming.
It took her several seconds to remember what had happened, that she wasn't still in the phantom zone.
Again.
Her breath was stuck in her throat, she couldn't breathe.
Someone was speaking and she recognized the voice, knowing Alex was near settled her down enough to take a deep breath.
"You're safe, you're on the ship back to earth, you're ok Kara, everything's ok," Alex repeated softly, wanting nothing more than to wrap her terrified little sister up in her arms, but knowing from experience not to touch Kara right after a nightmare without permission.
Kara's breath was still jagged and her eyes darted around the room like she was waiting for something to jump out.
"Can I-" Alex started, but Kara interrupted what she knew was Alex's request to hold her with a question of her own, "Where is everyone else?" She asked.
Even though Kara was comfortable around her friends, there were some parts of her that she didn't want everyone to know.
Supergirl being held by her sister kind of went against the tough persona she was known for.
The moments after her nightmares were venerable times, and Alex was the only person who'd ever been allowed to see her like that.
"Everyone is asleep, except for Elvi," Alex responded.
Kara turned to the foot of her bed and realized Elvi had been standing there, wearing a sympathetic expression while she watched Kara.
Kara tried to offer her a smile, to let her know that she was ok, but the grasp of the nightmare still held her tightly and all she could force out was a pathetic little smile that faltered faster than it lasted.
She turned back to Alex and gave her a nod.
Alex immediately climbed onto the bed, and Kara curled up into her as soon as she was settled, their final position had Kara's head on Alex's chest so she could hear her heartbeat and Alex's arms wrapped tightly around Kara, holding her like one would hold a broken vase while they waited for the glue to dry.
Alex was holding her together.
Elvi watched from the foot of the bed. She bit her lip, stomach twisting into knots at the sound of Kara's strangled but subdued cries.
Alex rubbed her back gently with one arm and the other pressed Kara's head tightly to her, "It's ok," she whispered quietly, "Take a deep breath, you're safe."
Kara slowly but surely started to settle, but the calmer her emotions got, the more she realized that she didn't feel good.
At all.
"Alex," she murmured, "What's going on?"
Concern fell across Alex's face, did Kara not remember getting rescued? Had she suffered some kind of memory loss?
"What do you mean Kara?" She asked, brushing hair off of Kara's sweaty forehead.
"With me," Kara mumbled, burying her head further into Alex's stomach so that her voice was muffled, "What's wrong with me?"
Alex was both relived and worried.
At least Kara hadn't suddenly lost her mind, but for her to admit that she was feeling bad meant that she truly was feeling awful, and Alex had no idea why.
"I'm not sure, can you tell me what exactly feels bad?" She asked softly, her voice was a kind of gentle that was only ever used for Kara.
Kara didn't respond for a minute, just grunted at the idea of having to talk more, but finally she muttered, "My head aches and my stomach is all sore and I'm hot but I'm cold an-and Alex I just don't feel good."
She intended to sound less pathetic and more authoritative, but she ended up sounding like a whiny puppy.
Elvi glanced up at Alex and they exchanged a look, both of them knew very different things about Kara, but they both knew that for her to act like this meant something was very wrong.
Alex took a deep breath to settle the growing knot of stress in her stomach, and looked back down at her sister, hand still gently rubbing her back.
"I don't know just yet what's wrong, but I'm sure if you stay under the lamps and rest, you'll feel a little bit better."
Kara gave a nod, closing her eyes and squeezing just a bit tighter around Alex.
Alex held her just as tight, "I ran some tests while you were asleep, the results should be done soon, I will figure out what's going on, I promise."
Kara didn't respond, and after 5 minutes Alex assumed she had drifted off to sleep again.
Elvi must've assumed the same thing, because she opened her mouth like she was about to say something to Alex, but was interrupted by Kara suddenly jumping off of the bed and dropping in front of a trash can across the room, making it just in time as she began to throw up.
Elvi reached her first.
She held her hair back and rested her other hand on Kara's shoulder, aware of just how clammy Kara's skin had become.
Alex watched, arms crossed, as she stood behind them.
Her worry for Kara was momentarily bypassed by a twinge of jealousy, that was her job to comfort Kara.
She shook her head to rid the thought, embarrassed that she could be so selfish at a time like this.
"Alex," Elvi said is a panicked voice, "She's very warm."
Kara had finished and was now sitting on her knees on the floor, swaying slightly like she might fall over completely any moment.
Alex walked over and pressed her hand against Kara's forehead, biting her lip in concern when she felt how warm she was.
"Oh Kara, we're gonna figure get this figured out real soon," Alex muttered gently. Kara had yet to say anything, but she leaned forward so her head was resting against Alex's leg.
Alex smiled despite her worry, sitting down so she could give her little sister a proper hug, which turned into Alex holding the deadweight of a Kryptonian in her arms.
"Oof wow you gotta lay of the potstickers or something," Alex joked, hoping to get a reaction out of Kara, but she didn't even acknowledge Alex had said anything.
"Elvi," Alex said, "Can you help me get her back into the bed? We'll bring the trashcan over there just in case."
Together they managed to get Kara laying back down in the bed, the sunlamps making her hair look golden.
Elvi looked at Alex with worried eyes, "What can we do?"
Alex sighed, "I'm going to check my results for the tests, some of them should be done by now."
Elvi nodded.
Alex rubbed Kara's shoulder, leaning down to kiss her forehead and brush the hair from her face before walking over to the other side of the room and looking through data.
Elvi watched Alex walk away before turning to Kara.
"Do you want some water?" She asked quietly in Kryptonian.
Kara shook her head, not even opening her eyes.
"Ok, do you need anything?" She asked, desperate to do something to help.
Kara only shook her head again.
Slowly, like it took a lot of effort just to do it, Kara lifted her hand and Elvi took it, holding it between both of hers.
Silence fell across the room, until a few minutes later Alex suddenly yelled in excitement, "I got it!"
Tablet in hand, she crossed the room and stood by the bed, leaning against the end of it as she showed Elvi the information displayed on the screen in her hand.
"This is Kara's bloodwork, there's some kind of virus that's been released into her bloodstream, my guess is from the phantom's attack. If she was fully charged with sun radiation, she'd probably be fine, but since she's not yet, the virus was able to cause more damage."
Elvi nodded, glad that they were onto something, "Ok so what can we do to fix it?"
"That's the thing, since we're not in a real med bay and we don't have much stuff here, there's not much I can do to fix this. Once we get back to Earth, I can get some stuff from my lab and get this taken care of, but until then, the sunlamps are about the best I can do."
"Well how long until we get back?" Elvi asked, slightly annoyed.
She had asked what they could do, implying that she of course wanted to help, but Alex had completely excluded the possibility of Elvi helping from her response.
Elvi forced a smile, telling herself that it probably wasn't intentional.
Alex smirked, knowing that it was intentional and feeling a little happy despite her better judgment that Elvi had caught the way she phrased her response.
Kara, who was out of it but still able to understand what was happening, and groaned in frustration.
Both Elvi and Alex assumed she did it out of pain, and went to each side of the bed to try and comfort her.
"What's the matter Kara?" Elvi asked
"Nothing," Kara sighed, too tired to try and explain, her whole body ached and she scrunched her face up in obvious pain.
"How long until we arrive to Earth, Alex?" Elvi asked, holding Kara's hand again.
"Should be soon," Alex answered shortly.
She sat down on the edge of the bed, her back to Elvi as she went back to checking the results of the tests, effectively ending the conversation.
Kara suppressed the urge to groan again.
She knew it would be weird for Alex and Elvi to meet, but she was disappointed in the way Alex was acting. It was uncharacteristic of her sister to be rude. Even with Kara's blood family, like Kal-El or Kara's mom, Alex never acted like this.
Kara knew she needed to talk to Alex and figure out what was going on, but right now all she could think about was how tired she was.
Closing her eyes, she drifted off.
It only took about half an hour for everyone else to wake up and come check on Kara.
They saw how much worse things had gotten since just a few hours earlier and it took Alex several minutes to calm them down and explain the situation.
"Once we get home, she'll be fine, we just have to make it until then."
"We should be back by the end of the day," J'onn said.
Lena walked up to Alex, "Look I know you know what you're doing, but it's always helpful to have an extra set of eyes, so would you mind if I looked at Kara's test results too?"
Alex smiled, glancing over at her sister to make sure she was alright. Kara was currently surrounded by all of her friends, thankfully they all understood that she was out of it and didn't try to talk to her, but their presence was comforting enough.
"Not at all Lena, I'll show you what I have so far."
J'onn sat next to Elvi by Kara's bedside, clearing his throat to get her attention.
"So Elvi, Kara's powers seemed to have been kickstarted when we released the sun radiation bomb, and I'm curious to know if you've noticed any power development yourself?"
Although he said it quietly, several people still heard it, and soon most of the room's attention was on Elvi.
"Oh I, uh, I haven't, no."
"Really?" J'onn questioned, the doubt evident in his voice, "That's unusual you should've noticed at least something."
Elvis stood abruptly, "Are you calling me a liar, Martian?" Her voice suddenly becoming sharp and aggressive, catching everyone off guard.
No one said anything, no one knew what to say, no one knew why she was so defensive all of the sudden.
Kara wanted to say something, anything, but she was too tired and couldn't think clearly.
Elvi stared at everyone for a moment before wordlessly making her way out of the room.
Still, the room was silent for a moment until Brainy muttered a quiet, "That was unexpected," and everyone slowly went back to whatever they had been doing before.
After a few minutes, Alex left Lena, who was examining a blood sample, and approached Kara.
Gently, she rubbed her sister's shoulder and brushed her hair back, waiting for Kara to open her eyes.
"Hi," Alex said softly when Kara's blue eyes focused on her, "Are you feeling any worse?"
Kara shook her head, "Not… not worse, not better though."
Alex smiled sympathetically, "I'm sorry, we're almost home ok? You'll feel better soon."
Kara nodded, reaching out to squeeze the hand resting on her shoulder.
"Hey do you know what that was about, with Elvi?" Alex asked.
"I have no idea," Kara said, forehead crinkling in concern.
Alex laughed, oh how she had missed that crinkle.
"What are you laughing at?" Kara muttered.
Alex leaned down to press a kiss on her forehead, "Crinkle."
Kara let out a little laugh, "Oh whatever."
"Try to get some rest, let me know if you need anything or start to feel worse."
Kara nodded, eyes falling closed already.
Alex pressed one more kiss to her forehead before walking back to where Lena was, eyeing the door Elvi had walked out of.
Lena looked up from the microscope she was looking in, "Kara still doing ok?" She asked.
Alex nodded.
"Do you know what Elvi was so upset about?" Lena asked.
Based on the way she looked away right after she asked the question, Alex assumed Lena felt like the question was a bit intrusive, but Lena was curious, just like Alex was.
"No, I don't have any idea."
"It's weird, I know this doesn't make any sense, but I swear I recognize her from somewhere."
Alex looked up in shock, "What? How can that be possible?"
"I have no idea, I just, it's like, she seems familiar. I can't place from where though. I'm sure it's just a déjà vu thing or something."
Alex didn't respond, but as they worked, Alex came to the conclusion that something was off about Elvi, and one way or another, she was going to figure out what it was.
Hope you enjoyed :) Have a wonderful day/night!
