Helpful Note: Draco's thoughts=Italic writing, Ice's thoughts=Bold writing
It all started one Saturday afternoon when Draco Malfoy was in the library, watching his best friends snog his worst enemies. Yes, Draco knew it was ridiculous. He wouldn't have agreed if his friends didn't threaten to use their Elemental powers. His friends and their girl/boyfriends are all Elementals, and he's the only one that's "normal". He was often teased and played pranks on because he's non-Elemental. For example, Theodore might suddenly shoot a jet of water, drenching him from head to toe; Granger would "accidentally" set his robes on fire; even Weasley sometimes send a wall of earth to block his path.
Anyway, back to the story. Draco was reading a book when he heard a voice. Ah, what happy couples they are. Draco's first reaction was to reply the voice. Yeah, yeah. They used their Elemental powers to tease me! Wonderful teamwork, eh? The voice laughed. I like you very much. Such sarcasm! Who ARE you, by the way? Why're you in my head? Why can you hear my thoughts? Well, my friend, do you know who Ice is? Draco sat up straight. Of course I do! I heard Granger one day that Ice was THE most powerful Elemental of all! Fire is right. I was the most powerful Elemental of all. And, my dear friend, I have chosen you to be my descendant.
Draco nearly fell out of his chair. But wait, Pansy said that Ice didn't choose a descendant for millions of years. Why would you suddenly choose me? And aren't all Elementals have their powers when they were born? Ice then told Draco the whole story, which seemed to be true to him. So, do I have Elemental powers now? He asked. Not yet. You only show them when you experience a strong emotion.
'Crap,' he said out loud. Theodore extracted himself from Granger and asked, 'What?' 'Nothing! Draco assured him. When Theodore turned back to Granger, Draco yelled in his mind. WHEN THE HELL WILL I GET TO USE MY POWERS? Depends on when you have strong emotions. Thanks. That makes me feel SOOOOO much better. Don't worry. Once you have powers, you will know how great they are. After all, I'm the most powerful Elemental of all. Powerful... Draco stared at the kissing couples, feeling slightly more cheerful to know that they could no longer bully him.
For the next few days, Draco's life changed a lot. He often listened to Ice's stories during lessons and he did not get angry when Theodore squirt water at him, knowing that he would have powers very soon. He kept reminding himself that he was the most powerful Elemental and found himself smirking every time he thought of Theo begging for mercy at his feet.
However, weeks passed, but Draco still showed no sign of strong emotions. Ice! Yes? WHEN WILL I FEEL STRONG EMOTIONS? How do I know? I'm not a Seer. 'Ugh!' Draco cried out, while Blaise looked at him in alarm. Draco immediately shut up. How CAN I feel strong emotions? Well, strong emotions include anger, embarrassment, fear... Fear... Draco's head snapped up. 'That's it!' he shouted, 'I've got an idea!' He jumped off his chair and raced out of the Slytherin Comon Room, ignoring the weird looks his friends were giving him. (Author's Note: I know. Draco is a bit OOC, but who doesn't go mental with a voice constantly talking in your head?)
Draco ran all the way to the Astronomy Tower and stopped. He took a deep breath. What are you trying to do, boy? I'm going to jump off this tower. You mad? This is extreme! I know! I might release my powers in such an extreme situation! Ice shut up. Draco's hands were shaking as came closer to the edge of the tower. Breath in, breath out. Breath in, breath out.
But after ten minutes, Draco was still on top of the Astronomy Tower. Are you going to jump, boy? Just in a minute... You've been waiting for ten minutes already! Stop being a coward and just jump! Sorry, but I'm a Slytherin. NOT a bloody Gryffindor. We Slytherins are cautious, not reckless. If you don't jump soon, someone might find you! Sure, Draco had been on broomsticks hundreds of feet from the ground, but at least he's on a broomstick. Now, he's going to jump empty-handed from the top of the highest tower in Hogwarts and could probably die...
Draco peered over the top of the tower and gulped. The tower was so tall that he couldn't even see Hagrid's house clearly. Then he remembered Albus Dumbledore falling from this tower. He nearly died but Fawkes saved him. He wondered if Dumbledore was scared when falling. You're not going to die, not going to die... He kept repeating these words in his head as he took a step closer to the edge. He clutched his fists and prepared to jump.
A lasso flew out and wrapped around his waist. Before he could say more than 'What the...?', he was pulled away from the edge. Draco hit the ground hard and groaned. 'What are you trying to do?' Blaise shouted, shaking Draco's shoulders. 'Luckily, Blaise noticed your strange actions, or else you'd be dead already!' Pansy said crossly, her hands on her hips. 'You don't have to commit suicide, mate,' Theo said with his hands around the water lasso. 'I'M NOT TRYING TO COMMIT SUICIDE!' yelled Draco, frustrated. 'Yes, you were!' exclaimed Hermione, 'Your legs were bent because you were trying to jump off the tower!' Draco gave up explaining. There's no point talking to those people.
'Fine! I'm trying to commit suicide. Happy?' he snapped, 'Will you let me go now?' 'No way!' replied Theo, 'You might go and kill yourself again. We have to take you to Hospital Wing.' Draco's eyes widened. They thought that he was a mental person! He struggled against the ropes as Theo pulled him through the halls, attracting a lot of students' attention. Ice! Help! Sorry! Nothing I can do.
Late at night, Draco found himself in a comfy bed in the Hospital Wing. Madam Pomfrey had notified his parents, who Apparated frantically into Hogwarts. His mother hugged him and called him 'little Drakie' while sobbing, making him feel like a five-year-old. His father demanded to know why he tried to commit suicide, or so they thought. If I have Elemental powers, I'll freeze them so that they won't come here and cause trouble. That is unless you can escape from the Hospital Wing.
How could he escape? He couldn't Apparate, and he certainly couldn't unlock the hospital doors without his wand. That's when he remembered: when Potter and his friends were caught and taken to Malfoy Manor, Dobby, his old house-elf, Apparated them away. There were Anti-Apparation spells around his house, so how did Dobby Apparate? The answer is that because he was an elf! Elf magic! But Dobby was dead. He couldn't possibly call him. That's when he remembered an elf that would be very glad to serve him.
As quiet as he could, he whispered, 'Kreacher?' There was a loud crack and Kreacher was in front of his bed. 'What could I do for you, Master Draco?' he croaked. 'Take me to the lake,' Draco ordered. 'But Sir Dumbledore told me that I should not take Master Draco anywhere...' 'This is an order, Kreacher, from a Pureblood. Would you rather follow the orders of a Half-blood or the orders of a Pureblood?' Draco asked. Kreacher bowed and replied, 'Follow me, Master Draco.'
Draco grabbed hold of Kreacher and the elf snapped its fingers. They were instantly outside the castle, next to the lake. Kreacher bowed low before Disapparating with a crack. Draco walked towards the edge of the lake. What are you trying to do, boy? I will jump into the lake. Won't people mistake you for trying to drown yourself? Not unless I have Elemental powers. Well, good luck then.
Draco clutched his fists for a moment before diving into the lake. The water was freezing cold at night, so Draco couldn't help but shiver. He was sinking to the bottom of the lake. Ice? No response. Draco knew that something was terribly wrong right there and then. ICE? Still no response.
Draco panicked and tried to return to the surface. His head was spinning because of the lack of oxygen. He managed to thrust his hand above the surface, waving franticly for a few seconds. He kicked his legs, trying to reach the surface, but the more he kicked, the more he sunk down. He was losing consciousness. He opened his mouth to gulp down a mouthful of ice water.
His body went limp and in his water-logged brain, he knew that his Elemental powers were not shown. He should have listened to Ice and just stay in the Hospital Wing. His eyes began to close, but before he fainted, he felt a pair of strong arms grab him and pulled him out of the water. Then the world went black and Draco knew no more.
