The next day, Linda took the girl's dress shopping. Abbey and her mom tagged along since they were family friends of the Mitchells. Linda insisted on buying Jade's dress. While Jade protested at first, she was secretly relieved. She couldn't afford a homecoming dress at the moment.
After they grabbed a handful of dresses, they went to the dressing rooms. Jade was come out in a rose gold dress. It had a tool skirt and sparkly top. It also has a deep V-neck that was sewn together near the bottom. "You look great," Linda said.
"Thank you," Jade said. She was wearing a red ballgown with a huge skirt. Abbey was barely able to squeeze through the doorway. Like the dress Jade was wearing, it had a tool skirt. It had rhinestones around the sweetheart neckline.
"You look beautiful, Abbey," Mrs. Posey said
"Thanks, mom," Abbey said. She stole a dirty look at Jade. She figured that Abbey still didn't believe her. Jade began to fear that maybe Abbey was planning something. Maybe she was going to expose her at the homecoming game.
"I'm going to try on another one," Jade said.
"Try on as many as needed, sweetie," Linda said. Jade reentered the dressing room. Her eyes landed on a grey dress. It had sheer sleeves. It also had a large tool skirt. Jade slipped into the dress but realized it had a zipper in the back. She knocked on the dressing room door.
"Can I have some help putting this on?" Jade asked.
"Sure," Abbey said. Abbey entered the dressing room. Jade had heard something about her going with the red dress. Abbey shut the door and decided to zip the dress extra slowly. "Aaron and I dated back in eighth grade."
"Really?" Jade gasped.
"Yeah," Abbey said. "We had a bad break up before ninth grade. We spent a lot of time together. So, I know that he would have for sure mentioned dinosaurs in yours and his emails. That boy loved himself some dinosaurs. Also, the way he spoke was out of character. So, I know all of this is a lie."
"I don't have malicious intent," Jade whispered. "He stole a letter I wrote to myself. It was an assignment from my therapist. They found the letter on his body. They thought he wrote the letter for me. I didn't have the heart to tell him otherwise. But, please, you can't tell anyone."
"I won't," Abbey shrugged.
"You won't," Jade gasped.
"No," Abbey said. "I wanna see you fall apart yourself. I want this Jenga tower to fall on its own. One day, they'll see you for the dirty liar you are."
Abbey then finished zipping the dress before leaving. Later that night, the emails and notes appeared online.
