Chapter 5: Surprises

Miyuki's POV

When I saw Sawamura's face on television, three things happened in the dining hall at the same time.

One, I feel like my heart went up on my brain and I honestly don't know what to feel. Anger? Relief? Confusion? Dumbfounded? Amused? Who knows. Stay tuned for another week of Kazuya's inner thoughts gone wild.

Two, everyone dropped what they were doing and ran towards the television.

Three, everyone yelled at the top of their lungs (not me because I was still recovering and yes, they were yelling while running towards the television).

"WHAT THE HELL SAWAMURA—!"

Everyone was chaotic.
It was so fun.
Such fun.

Of all the places we could think of, Sawamura being live on television was never on the list—let alone being in the gym of the pros. There were a lot of questions going on to my head like:

"Why didn't you tell this to me?"
"Why do you look like you're having fun playing there than with us?"
"You choose to go there instead of waking me up?"

And many more. I'm so pissed. He's going to have an earful of lecture with his beloved captain later. I'll make sure of it.

The game had just started. Sawamura's wearing a black tracksuit with a golden dog-like logo on his left breast pocket. I've never seen him wear that before. Could it be someone gave that to him when he got there?

"The hell is he acting as if he knows what he's doing?" Kuramochi growled as we all watched the opponents serving the ball towards Sawamura's side. He flinched when one of his teammates caught the ball and another one hit it to the other side but the opponent caught it back.

We all let out a dubious laugh and proceed to discuss the probability of Sawamura being kidnapped is higher than being featured on the news and playing volleyball.

"Does he even know how to play volleyball?" Nori asked. Everyone shrugged. Sawamura's teammates were all yelling while Sawamura was just doing some jumping jacks. That idiot doesn't know what to do in there, does he?

I didn't even know he could play anything other than baseball. All I know is that he's the first person to get up for practice and the last person to go to bed because he's always up all night doing laps and forcing me to catch for him. He doesn't have the time to do any sports. I saw him play basketball once during their PE but it was just a below-average play.

"You think the coach knows about this?" Shirasu turned to me.

"Most likely," I crossed my arms around my chest, trying my best not to be annoyed in this situation. "He'd know if any of us is not present in the field. No wonder coach didn't bother to ask Sawamura's whereabouts when Sawamura didn't respond to the coach calling his name."

"The tickets for the special VIP are expensive. How the heck did he manage to get one?" Kanemaru furrowed his eyebrows as he turned the volume higher.

We all sat quietly and watched the game.

Sawamura bent his knees slightly, opened his arms in front of him, and waited. He had this certain look on his eyes that almost resembled the one when he's in the mound. This person behind the screen looks like Sawamura but he somehow feels... different.

"Give it to me, Haru!" He suddenly yelled, it was demanding and confident.

It gave me goosebumps.

The person he called out threw the ball towards Sawamura almost instantly. Sawamura went to the edge of the court and rushed forward to hit the ball. The ball went on to the other side immediately even though Sawamura was still seconds away from the ground. They were the first to earn a point.

"W-Woah," the first years all stared at the television in blank amazement. "That's so fast."

Woah indeed.

"Did you see that guy who tossed the ball to Sawamura? Did he even touch that ball? So fast!" Kominato's eyes widened with excitement. And honestly, it was incredible.

"I almost can't believe Sawamura managed to make contact with it so fast." Tojou leaned forward to the TV, entertained by the game.

"I can't believe he can jump that high with that tracksuit he's wearing," Furuya said and Kominato nodded in agreement.

The game continues. It's the team of Sawamura's turn to serve. His teammate threw the ball in the air and jumped to hit it on the other side. It was so fast but the opponents managed to retrieve it but it ricochets out of bounds. The player served again. This time, he served it even harder because we could even hear the impact of his serve the moment he touched it. We flinched. Oddly enough, it hit the net. The opponents earned a point.

"Do you think anyone could get that?" I heard Asou asked.

"I for sure don't want to be the person to get that serve," I said. "You probably have to be so good in volleyball to do that. And seeing as everyone is in that court playing, safe to say they're that good."

"Sawamura's there with them though, Miyuki." Nabe smiled.

"Well, that's probably because he got dragged along in there." I joked.

It was the opponent's turn to serve. The player served it and I can't believe that volleyball was this intense because the moment he served, it was so fast and hard— probably even harder than the one that Sawamura's teammate served, that it instantly flew in the direction where Sawamura is standing. Knowing how clumsy he is during field practice, everyone suddenly got worried for him.

"Sawamura's going to get hit." I suddenly tensed and everyone hummed in agreement. We all braced for the impact.

"Go for it Eijun!" The guy who threw the ball to him earlier shouted. I saw Sawamura smirking. It looks like he was going to let the ball hit him. Is he serious? But then he positioned himself and lowered his body.

"Mine!" He shouted and he caught the ball effortlessly and it flew right in the air.

"Nice receive, Sawamura!" His teammate yelled out. "Hyuuga!"

"I know I know." This person called Hyuuga rushed to the back of the court and chased after the ball. That's going to be too far for any of them to hit. Then I saw Sawamura running towards the net. What the?

Hyuuga jumped and tossed the ball smoothly to where Sawamura was running and Sawamura was getting ready to hit it. But the opponents know what's going to happen as two tall players rushed to the net in an attempt to block him.

"That idiot's going to get blocked." Kanemaru tightened his hands into fists. We all leaned forward to anticipate what will happen next.

Despite two people ready to block him, Sawamura was unbothered. He jumped, stretched his upper body, and smack the ball on one of his opponent's hands and it went out of bounds on the opponents' side of the court. His team earned a point again. We all breathe out in relief. How he managed to do that is beyond me.

There were people in the background cheering for him. The guy who's the shortest among the pro-players that I saw earlier in the morning news was jumping and seemed to cheer for none other than Sawamura and Sawamura waved him back.

"Looks like Sawamura is that good too, Miyuki. Seeing how he effortlessly caught that fast-moving ball towards him. Gyaha!" Kuramochi teased.

"Shut up." I mouthed to him as I narrowed my eyes. He knows what I'm feeling right now and enjoys making fun of me every chance he could get.

"But seriously," Kuramochi stretched out. "He should be resting. Why is he there and how come he didn't tell anything to any of us? Tch. That idiot. And now look at him, acting all high and mighty and having fun over there. Did he forget that he's going to have a game soon?"

I clicked my tongue. As much as I know that Sawamura has reasons for being there but not telling it to any of us or even to me pisses me off somehow. When did he even learn how to play volleyball? The hell? He never mentioned it to me whenever we're together.

Suddenly, there was a sound of a whistle. Everyone stopped playing and there were these tall players who went to the court and were instructing something to Sawamura and this Hyuuga person. One of the tall players patted Sawamura's head and he's just there smiling as if he's enjoying it. Tch. I wonder what's going on. Everyone went out of the court and the camera shifted to the news reporter.

It was a short match but I could feel the intensity of each player already! And now may we present the lucky ones who get to play with the Adlers and the Black Jackals for this afternoon's game, Hyuuga Haru and Sawamura Eijun. Are you guys doing this as a warmup for later?

When the camera presented Sawamura's goofy-looking face, all hell breaks loose in the dining hall.

"Sawamura, that bastard! Looking all smug-like just because a pretty reporter is beside him."
"It is Sawamura! It wasn't just someone who happens to look like him after all."
"His play from earlier was just a fluke I bet."
"When he goes back in here, we're going to kick his ass."

Hello, good people in Japan and the rest of the world! You could say that hahaha! Haru and I were planning to bond after years of misunderstandings through volleyball and it so happens some people supported our mending of bonds and we let them join us. The Schweiden Adlers were kind enough to help us out. And for that, I salute them for their generosity!

"Oh god even over there he's being so damn loud that I'm the one feeling embarrassed for him." Kuramochi rubbed his temples.

"It's a good thing he's not wearing our uniform..." Okumura glared as he emitted his usual wolf-like aura.

I see. Thank you for that enthusiastic answer, Sawamura-san! Hyuuga-san, you're awarded for the best setter in high school. I'm sure it's quite an honor to receive such an award and even more so when you're teamed up with the number 1 setter in the nation, Kageyama Tobio-san. Do you feel any pressure later especially when you're up against not just one of the top divisions in volleyball but also your-and this is according to my sources- former teammate?

Former teammate?

The camera focused on the guy named Hyuuga Haru. Unlike Sawamura who looked excited being interviewed, this person looked like he's calm and more relaxed. Looking at him, he has thick eyebrows and although his hair is short, you can see the wavy curls.

"Tch. Another pretty boy." Someone from behind muttered and for some reason, I could feel some envious eyes locked behind my back. I wonder why.

I believe anyone would feel anxious playing with the monster generation, don't you agree? However, I feel like this is a perfect opportunity for me to go beyond my abilities as a setter even if it's just for one day. As for my former teammate, I believe in Eijun's ability as a wing spiker and I feel like this also going to be an experience he won't forget.

I see. Thank you very much Hyuuga-san. Now, Sawamura-san. My sources tell me that you're an amazing spiker and added to that, your hits are almost impossible to recover because of the spin and the movement the ball has every time you hit it. Would you like to share some tips or secrets behind that spike of yours for the aspiring spikers watching this right now?

"Are they talking about Sawamura? Our Sawamura?" I tilted my head. Everyone pondered it for a while. Even they couldn't believe it.

"Well, there's only one Sawamura Eijun with that goofy-looking face looking all weird in front of the camera. So yes, it's definitely our Sawamura." Zono finally answered.

Fair point.

I, uhh, honestly think that's just an over-exaggeration. I just try to hit the ball with all my heart whether or not it's meant for me, as what's expected to be for a spiker.

Oh? Is that your way of being modest? You don't have to be shy Sawamura-san. You can be honest here with us.

Oh, well in that case. Uhm, it's true I used to play volleyball back in middle school but I'm more into baseball now. I'm a pitcher in the awesome school known as Seidou High School! You might be wondering how come a pitcher such as myself is chosen to play with the amazing pros and I honestly can't believe it myself. However, I remembered someone very important to me who told me a long time ago that sports is meant to be free and should be loved by many. I still love volleyball despite being not able to play for a long time! But if you ask me, I still prefer baseball. nyahahaha! Ouch, what the heck did you do that for Haru?!

A fly was heading your way.

"I didn't say that.." I muttered under my breath.

"Be quiet Miyuki." Kuramochi elbowed me. Did he hear me say that?

Oh my, you too are very close with each other. Is it because of the bond you two have as a deadly setter-hitter pair?

Well, we... recently got in touch with one another so it's a good, uhh, thing to, uhh, bond with each other I guess. Anyways, going back to the part about me being a spiker, I think I would just be an ordinary guy spiking the balls from left to right if there's no setter involved. If you ask me who's the amazing player here, it would be Haru, the lighthouse of the court. I just love hitting the ball when it comes to my way but it's the setter who deceives the opponents and opens up the opportunity for the spiker. They're like the control tower in the court! For the aspiring spikers out there, just jump and always believe that the ball is heading your way and even if it isn't, you still gotta hit it with all your might. A team of 6 is better than one after all.

What an inspiring speech Sawamura-san. I thank both of you for your time here with us. Are there any last words from you both before we end our interview?

They both exchanged looks. They snickered at something and faced the camera again. I didn't mind it at first but isn't Sawamura getting close with that Hyuuga guy? Surely everyone feels the same way too. I looked around and no one seemed to react... Well, I'm sure they are concerned too.

I am Hyuuga Haru, a setter

And I am Sawamura Eijun, a wing spiker turned to pitcher!

And we're here to say to our former teammates that we didn't regret anything and we hope we get to play again soon, wherever you guys are.

They both smiled, well Sawamura looks like he's smiling genuinely but Hyuuga looked like he was having constipation.

I'm sure your words will reach them, as you have with the audience. Everyone is looking forward to watching a match between the known setter and the former ace. Best of luck to you both! This is Sports new. Don't forget, the friendly match will start at 3'o clock in the afternoon and the official match will start at 4 pm. We'll broadcast it live. See you guys then!

The news went on its commercial break. Everyone was quiet. Their faces were full of confusion. Some half-opened their mouths, some were silent, and Zono's face was so serious that it was pretty funny to look at. Unconsciously I cackled so loudly, it broke everyone's silence.

Zono pointed at me. "There it is! His twisted personality."

Eh?

The third years were glaring. "As the team captain, shouldn't you be mad at Sawamura for not telling you?"

Ehh?

Kuramochi looked disappointed for some reason. "Why the hell are you even laughing, Miyuki?"

Ehhh?

Why does it feel like I'm the one being scolded here?

After everyone settled down, we all discussed the events that happened. Kanemaru and Zono proposed an idea that we should all get Sawamura and bring him back here in order not to embarrass himself and the name of the school but I dismissed the idea since it might make matter worse and Sawamura might be pouty during pitching practice and that's going to be a handful for me. He does hold grudges after all. Nabe suggested one of us should go watch the game and watch over him and he tried calling his sister if her extra special VIP is still available. Unfortunately, she and her friend went together so it was scratched off. Nori, Shirasu, and Tojou said that we should all just wait for him to come back instead and let him enjoy his day off, to which Kominato and Furuya agreed. The problem is...

"What if he injures himself in the middle of the game?" Okumura spoke up.

"I agree with Okumura," I said "even if the balls aren't that hard like in baseball, I've seen bruises in the arms from our volleyball players here in school and it looks pretty bad. He's our pitcher and he should take care of his arms and legs."

"It's normal to have bruises when you're not used to receiving the ball but it's not that fatal," Shirasu explained. "There are protective pads for the players and I'm sure these pro players won't let Sawamura injure himself."

Well, Shirasu does have a point but we still can't be sure. The Summer Tournament is coming up and if Sawamura has an injury, I'm not sure how the team will handle it. Although we still have Furuya, Nori, and Kaneda but Sawamura is also an important pitcher for the team. As I was pondering over this, Coach Kataoka and Rei-chan went into the dining hall. The coach noticed something's wrong with everyone and asked what seems to be the problem. We explained everything. They both then told us they already gave their permission to Sawamura since last night, just like I thought. Though the coach didn't expect that Sawamura's going to play.

"I allowed him to go because it will give him a distraction from not pitching today and he needs to relax. He said his friends are playing but playing in the court with them is another story. I already gave him my permission so we all just have to wait for him to go back," He said. "Sawamura said he'll be back in the afternoon. Use the time to practice instead of worrying after him."

"Yes sir!" We all shouted.

"Oh my, I didn't know his friends were pros. And here I thought it was just a high school volleyball match. I wonder what he meant by monster generation though." Rei-chan wondered.

"Oh-oh, sensei maybe we could help with that!" The girl managers raised their hands as if they were in a class. "When we watched Sawamura-kun's game a while ago, we got curious and searched the ones called Monster Generation of Volleyball."

Everyone all turned to them. Umemoto then opened her phone.

"There are 7 players in the Schweiden Adlers and MSBY Black Jackals who are in the Monster Generation. Ah, Monster Generation is just basically those people are practically a monster when it comes to the court and they dominate the games. The Adlers have Hoshiumi Kourai, Ushijima Wakatoshi, and Kageyama Tobio. Kageyama-san looks so dreamy! Ah but Ushijima-san is so handsome too and Hoshiumi-san is adorable as well!"

"S-senpai..."

"Sachiko-chan."

"AH sorry! I'll continue." She cleared her throat. "For the MBSY Black Jackals, they have Sakusa Kiyoomi, Miya Atsumu, Bokuto Kotarou, and Hinata Shoyo. The article says here that Hinata-san played beach volleyball in Brazil for two years after he graduated and then joined the pros. How awesome is that? But if you ask me, I'm liking this Bokuto-kun! I like his hair and his smile."

"Ehhh? Mine is totally Miya-kun! He's so handsome and I heard he has a twin."

"So Yui-senpai is into idol-like face? Sakusa-san looks charming, especially with his moles. He looks like a mysterious prince."

"Ah! You think so too Anna-chan? He looks good with his curls too. But, weirdly, he wears a mask when he's out of the court though."

"Anna-chan and Akane-chan like guys who are mysterious huh? Now that I think about it, Hinata-san looks refreshing. I can already imagine his smile brightening up my day. So dreamy~"

"Hear that, Shinji? Haruno likes refreshing guys who can brighten up her days." Tojou said in a joking tone to Kanemaru. Even if he didn't tell it to the rest of us, it's obvious he likes Haruno. Kanemaru just kept quiet while he was holding himself not to blush.

I asked them if there were any articles related to Sawamura. The girls started swiping on their phones for a while and discovered something. This time, Natsukawa explained because Umemoto seemed to be distracted in searching some photos of Bokuto.

"According to this old article, Sawamura used to be the ace in their middle school but he suddenly quit the volleyball club in his last year of middle school and he wasn't heard of ever since. In his middle school, everyone expected him to be one of the new generation of monsters along with Hyuuga-kun. Another article said that Sawamura and Hyuuga-kun were unstoppable together through the calculative and risky plays these two do in the court as a setter-hitter pair. Wow, it almost sounds like the battery between you two, Miyuki-kun."

"Ehh, Sawamura-kun was an ace in volleyball? He must've been good. Hey senpai, can we watch the Schweiden Adlers vs MSBY Black Jackals later? After reading those articles, it makes me want to watch how is Sawamura-kun going to play with the pros and against his former partner." Haruno clapped her hands. Umemoto and Natsukawa were quiet, almost seemed like they wanted to watch but they still have their duties as managers. They all turned to Rei-chan.

"I see why not. I'm actually interested in seeing him play plus this is going to be a once in a lifetime to see Ace Sawamura in volleyball form," Rei-chan lifted her glasses. "What do you think coach? After you learn that Sawamura's a former ace, it makes you curious right?"

Sometimes I forget that Rei-chan is sneakier than I am.

Coach Kataoka was quiet for a while. Everyone all stared at him, eyes begging to actually watch a sport that's not baseball for the sake of watching the idiot play later with the big guys.

As much as I want to practice in preparation for the next game, I'm curious to see Sawamura play more. I saw him play just for a little bit a while ago but it's going to be a full match later and everyone in this room feels the same way. And he was an ace? Sawamura never told something this important to me even though we're a battery. I feel like my heart suddenly ached.

Damnit. Hold it in Kazuya. You have to.

"You will all finish earlier in your afternoon practice but tomorrow I expect everyone will double their time in practice, is that clear?" The coach said in his commanding voice. We all responded in sync. He turned to face me, gestured me to practice now so we can end it early.

"Everyone let's do field practice now. I want everyone to be loud during practice, is that clear? Now let's go. We've rested quite a bit already. The sooner we practice, the earlier we prepare ourselves. Let's go!" I yelled as we all head out back to the fields. The rest followed. I heard Furuya sulking after finding out Sawamura was an ace. I smirked.

Oh, Sawamura. Keep being you.

Sawamura's POV. Right after they were interviewed

"Stop sulking already, Haru."

I attempted to cheer Haru after we suddenly got called out for an interview in the middle of the game. He looked pretty bummed out over it. How he managed to smile and relax in front of the camera is a mystery to me. We went back to the bleachers after the interview. I managed to be calm during the interview and I got to admit, I'm a bit proud if I do say so myself. Well done, me!

I looked at Haru, who was still awfully quiet.

"C'mon now!" I slapped him in the back "who would've expected that the reporters arrive in the middle of the game anyway? It can't be helped. You should be grateful that they even let us play for a bit before calling us out."

"It wasn't even in the middle of the game," He corrected me in his low and grumpy voice. "The game barely started, Eijun. The others feel the same."

"Looking at the scoreboard, it's 2-1 in our favor. On the bright side, we won." I grinned.

"You idiot. It's not enough," he gritted his teeth. "I wanted to play more volleyball."

"I know how you feel." I smirked.

I observed his hunger for more plays. It reminded me of my hunger when I'm on the mound. Ugh, I want to pitch so bad right now. I want Miyuki-senpai to catch for me. I want to see him again! Heck, it's still just half of the day and I'm already missing him. Damnit I should've woke him up this morning before I went out. How could I be so stupid?

"Hey, you okay? Your ears are turning red for some reason." Haru was waving his hand in front of me.

I quickly hid my ears. Oh shit. I was blushing?

"Y-y-yeah!" I stuttered. "T-this was because, uh, you, you hit me in the head earlier. What the heck was that for anyway? Were you trying to embarrass me in front of the camera?"

"You already embarrassed yourself by spouting nonsense earlier. Besides, that's what you get for babbling out loud that you're a baseball player." The way he said that reminds me of Wolf-boy. I'm sure they'd get along pretty well if they met.

"Eh? That's because I am." I said bluntly.

"See what did I tell you? The more you say that the more I am frustrated that your chance of being a volleyball player is slowly fading away. Ugh, that wasted volleyball potential." He sulked again.

I just blinked and laughed at him. I can't help but remembered when Tobio-san and Atsu-san almost said the same thing to me when I first told them I chose baseball over volleyball. Though they still keep mentioning it to me from time to time. If I recall, Atsu-san was frustrated over it a while again during our practice. I don't know if it's a setter thing or not but these three are similar now that I think about it.

"The fuck you laughing at, idiot?" He grabbed me by the collar again. Now, this is familiar.

"There you go again! Do you honestly kiss your mother with that mouth of yours?" I tried to push him back.

"Have you forgotten the fact that I never knew my mother, you idiot bastard?" He glared but I don't feel any hostility from it. My lips curved upwards a bit.

"Sorry about that. What I meant to say was, do you kiss your father with that mouth of yours?"

"I'm going to kick your ass, Eijun."

And he did. The others in the bleachers were watching my former teammate kicking me all around and all was well with the world.

We didn't continue our match despite the reporter had already left because our time was limited with the Adlers. The team set up a mini-match between them instead and it was better. Haru and the others stood up when Ushiwaka-san was about to hit the ball.

Bam.

The ball bounced in our direction and it landed on one of the fans. Ushiwaka-san jogged towards the fan and signed the ball for her. She almost fainted but luckily her friends were there ready to catch her if she does. He went back to the court as the crowd cheered for them.

That was amazing. He's like a cannon with that arm of his. I wonder how strong his arm is if he tried to pitch. That would be amazing to see.

"Can you do that?" Haru suddenly said while his eyes never left the court, it's as if he's analyzing the team's movements.

"Like Ushiwaka-san's? Heh. Not in a million chances. He's a monster cannon in the court. I'm more interested in seeing Ushiwaka-san trying to pitch. His shoulders and his power would make him a good pitcher and not to mention he's tall. The batters would pee their pants off if they see a player like that in the mound." I smiled, already imagining the possibility.

I heard Haru groaned. We continued watching until it was time for lunch.

Everyone gathered in the court and talked with the team again. Haru went with them too. I saw Tobio-san calling for me and I run towards him.

"Tobio-san!" I waved at him.

His face was all calm but his eyes tell me otherwise. It gleamed with excitement. Unlike Shoyo-san who's more open with his emotions, Tobio-san is in the shy department. Doesn't match his appearance at all.

"It's been a while Eijun. How's your day here so far?"

"It's awesome. I still can't believe you guys are going to have a game later with the Black Jackals again. I'm so looking forward to seeing that."

"Me too." He chuckled. He suddenly avoided eye contact. "By the way Eijun, Uhhh... is Hinata okay when you met him a while ago?"

"He was jumping a lot as usual. Though I did recall he had this weird look on his face every time he tries to bend his knees. Could it be he's injured?" I suddenly panicked.

Tobio-san snorted. I asked him if something was wrong with Shoyo-san but he told me it was nothing.

"That dumbass is just having some legs cramps. Probably from too much... exercise." He coughed.

Odd. Next to Omi-omi-san, Shoyo-san takes care of his body and health with such passion. Time and time he'd call me out of the blue and reminded me to condition my body well before and after practice.

"Really? l could ask him later since he's going to be here to pick me up. We're supposed to eat together." I said. One of the organizers told me that the Black Jackals decided to eat lunch with me instead of meeting with them after lunch. Makes me more excited to see them soon.

"He's going here?" He tilted his head

"Yep! Do you want to join us? Oh but, won't it be weird that the rival teams for later will just randomly have lunch together?"

He pondered for a bit and suddenly frowned. Guess I was right.

"Ugh, you're right. And I just remembered we'll have lunch with Haru-san too."

"Now now, don't forget about your beloved player, Tobio-san! He may be rude and a pouty mouth but deep down he's just a socially awkward boy who comes off mean to most people."

"I'm only like that to idiots, dumbass Eijun." Haru suddenly arrived with his arm around Korai's shoulders. Beside them was Ushiwaka-san.

"Ei-chan, you were amazing back there, right Ushijima?" Korai crossed his arms around his chest looking all proud as usual.

Ushiwaka-san gave out a soft smile as he nodded. He then attempted to talk me into playing against him right here and now. Everyone seemed to agree and Korai even tried to push me back into the court but I resisted heavily. Haru joined as well while I looked at Tobio-san, asking for his help. At first, he wanted to see me play again but I gave him my puppy-dog eyes, his weakness. He gave in and managed to separate me and the others.

"You and Hinata are like Ei-chan's parents, Kageyama. One look from him and you're all going soft. You're spoiling him too much." Korai pouted.

"I-I do not!" Tobio-san said as I hid behind him.

"Yes, you do. You even went all the way to his school last time to donate dozens of sports drinks. You asked us to help you carry it too." Ushiwaka-san said.

"AHH! So it was you guys who donated those? We received so much that we gave some to the other sports club." They could've said hi to me when they visited. What was I even doing when they were in school? Hopefully not something shameful.

Tobio-san didn't say anything. He was embarrassed and wasn't even denying anything. I'm glad. Before I was so worried that when I told him I'm going to be a baseball player, he was visibly upset. I was a bit guilty because the Karasuno team taught me everything I know about volleyball and he and Shoyo-san were the most excited ones when it comes to teaching me. Even if he doesn't show it, it's such a relief that he accepted my choices and even went all the way to support me in his way.

"Everyone. Thank you. I am grateful for it even if it's a bit too late." I beamed a huge smile.

All of them, except Haru, clenched their fists near their chests. Korai fell to his knees, Ushiwaka-san closed his eyes but was visibly shaking, and Tobio-san was blushing to his ears and neck. They then circled me and hugged me suddenly.

"You're a precious boy, you know that Ei-chan?" Korai was in tears. Ushiwaka-san and Tobio-san didn't say anything but I could feel them nodding.

For some reason, the rest of the Adlers saw everything and although they didn't know what just happened, I know they wanted to join Korai and the others in hugging me.

Oh no.

I saw Romero-san, the oldest of them all and a father, running quicker than the rest. I shouted and told them to stay away but it was too late. They all ran so fast towards us that we all fell. Haru was just standing there but the team managed to pull him down with us and I feel like I'm a pin stuck in tall and big haystacks. Everyone was laughing while I was struggling to free myself. The crowd liked what they see and they all ended up taking some pictures. I stared at Haru, who was still processing what just happened and he caught me staring at him. We both burst out laughing.

Shoyo-san and I met up just outside the Adlers' gym. Tobio-san accompanied me while Haru and the Adlers all went out for lunch and Tobio-san will join with them after this.

The moment their eyes meet, they all started glaring at one another. Looks like things never changed even if they're already adults. These two are rivals and at the same time great friends. Just like Furuya and I.

I think I stared at them a bit too much because while they were so busy looking at one another, they forgot I was even there. Tobio-san then started kissing Shoyo-san in the cheeks, then the forehead, his nose, and finally Shoyo-san's lips. I saw Shoyo-san's lips curved upwards when Tobio-san's lips reached his. But then he suddenly punched Tobio-san in the stomach while I gaped my mouth open.

You know what, scratch that. Furuya and I are nothing like these two.

"W-we, we, w—weee" Shoyo-san stuttered and his face almost matched the color of his hair. "Eijun-kun, we-wee... we can explain! This... this idiot is uh... oh god... where do I even start? Tobio!" He turned to Tobio-san.

Tobio-san blushed a little but it seems like he was a little bit unbothered by me catching them being lovey-dovey. I didn't know they were in that kind of relationship at all. When did this even start?

"Well, Shoyo and I have been dating for years already. Thought it was already that obvious. The Adlers and the Black Jackals and some people we're close with know about us. We just want to keep it private though." He explained whilst not facing me.

Oh great now they're on a first-name basis.

I was stone-faced. Shoyo-san didn't deny it and all this time they were in a relationship? And I thought the reason why Tobio-san wanted to go to Brazil back then when I joked about Shoyo-san having a lover was because he cannot believe that Shoyo-san had a lover first than he did. Who would've thunk?

Shoyo-san and Tobio-san ended up arguing again. I tried breaking these two apart but they wouldn't budge. Luckily one of the Adlers went back to get Tobio-san and they all went in their separate ways. As his teammate was dragging him, Tobio-san shouted that he'll call Shoyo-san later. Shoyo-san just nodded. Did they just make up, just like that?

Afterward, Shoyo-san called out a cab and we were on our way to meet with the others for lunch. During the trip, it was all awkward. I was too flustered from a while ago that I missed the chance to talk with them about it.

"Do you find it weird?" Shoyo-san suddenly said, which surprised me. Weird? Weird what?

"What do you mean?"

"Two guys in a relationship. Kissing." He said in a shy voice.

"N-no. I'm more startled by the fact you guys never told me about it and I must say that was an awkward way of giving me the news," I scratched my head, nervously laughing. "Besides, it's not like I don't understand... guys...in...a... relationship."

I slowly faded my words. I suddenly blurted out what should've been a secret of mine for a long time. He stared at me with curious eyes.

"Ehh? You're dating a guy too, Eijun-kun?" Shoyo-san said.

"What? Hell no! Uh, I mean no. But I'm in love with this person and he's a bit socially inept but nowadays, he's improving his communication skills though it seems like he still has more ways to go..." I feel my face getting hot. It's my first time telling this someone that I have feelings for a guy, towards him of all people. I must be out of my mind.

"Did you tell him how you feel about him?"

"No. I mean, why bother? We're too busy preparing for the Summer Tournament and he's going to retire after that and he'll be busy studying for college or going pro. He'll just laugh it out and then continue whatever the hell he is doing. He's not good with his feelings and communicating with others is already a bit too much for him so why should he even start thinking about other feelings such as love? Knowing him, that's like his least feelings to prioritize right now." I placed my hand on my chin, watching different buildings passed by us.

"I see. Well, I understand your reason," He put his hand on my shoulder, trying to comfort me. "But even so, you still like him right?"

"Even if it's too annoying to admit, but yeah. I still do. Damnit." I gritted my teeth.

I heard Shoyo-san humming. Afterward, he explained how he and Tobio-san started dating. Throughout his explanation, I was blushing from my ears and neck.

It happened when they both graduated from Karasuno. When they were alone in the gym, they both confessed together which surprised them both. It was revealed that Tobio-san liked Shoyo-san since their first year of high school but Shoyo-san realized his feelings in their 2nd year of high school.

"I'm surprised he didn't make a move on you in your first year, Shoyo-san."

"Oh he did but you know awkward he is when it comes to human interaction. He ended up embarrassing himself." Shoyo-san laughed, recalling the memories they had when they were in high school. He then asked me about my crush. I was all flustered but in the end, I told him all about Miyuki-senpai. How he was the reason why I went to Seidou in the first place, how he makes me want to become a better pitcher, how his smile is cute, and how I want to actually kiss the heck out of him every time he makes fun of me. Shoyo-san was just listening to it all, though he did tell me not to tell it to Tobio-san otherwise he'd go crazy. Wonder what he means by that.

"So this Miyuki person is your genius catcher and not to mention your captain and the clean-up batter of the team? Way to go Eijun-kun. Your standards in men are pretty top-notch, huh. I'm proud of you." He winked at me. I honestly don't know what to say about that.

He then told me who in his team is in a relationship. Kotarou-san and Keiji-san are obvious, they've been together for years already.

"So you knew about Bokuto-san and Akaashi-san but you never thought about how Kageyama and I acted way differently than before?"

"Can't be helped Shoyo-san," I lifted my shoulder in a half shrug. "You guys were always arguing over small things so I never thought about it."

"Ugh. You're right."

I was more surprised that Atsu-san and Omi-omi-san are together. Apparently, they started dating after Omi-omi-san graduated from college. Atsu-san doesn't mind being affectionate towards him but Omi-omi-san does. Now that I still about it, those two were awfully close when we were in their gym a while ago. Osa-san is currently courting Suna-san despite being in love with him since they were in high school. Atsu-san and the Black Jackals are supporting him. Such great friends. But what finally threw me off like a scattered bomb was Hirugami-san and Meian-san, the team captains of the Adlers and the Black Jackals. They're still not together but according to Shoyo-san, it looks like they secretly like one another but are too shy to admit it, despite already being adults.

"They're so obvious during the early morning interview!" Shoyo-san waved his hands in the air. "Why can't they just be honest with each other and just admit that they like one another. Bokuto-san and Hoshiumi-san were even planning to get them on a date by telling them that we have a joint meeting with their teams in a fancy restaurant but in reality, it will just be the two of them."

"It didn't end well?" I arched an eyebrow.

"It didn't end well." He sighed.

Meian-san got sick on that day and Hirugami-san got pissed at both Kotarou-san and Korai. But I heard Hirugami-san visited Meian-san's place and nursed him back to health. So it was all good in the end.

Minutes had passed and we finally reached the place where we're going to eat together. It was one of the fancy restaurants I've heard so much about on social media. Shoyo-san lend me some of his clothes.

We met up with the rest of the team. Everyone jumped on me. Seriously if I have a yen for every time these tall people all come and rush to either hug or jump on me, I'd be the richest guy in the world. I sat between Shoyo-san and Kotarou-san. In front of me were Atsu-san and Omi-omi-san. Atsu-san was too busy feeding Omi-omi-san, who was glaring at him and telling him to stop.

"Seriously. You're freaking annoying, Miya. Stop that."

"Ehh? So it's Miya now huh? Besides, I reckon' ya don't want to touch this silverware and chopsticks since there might be germs. I'm just helpin' ya out." Atsu-san said in his low and teasing voice.

Omi-omi-san looked disgusted. He grabbed something from his bag and took out a small case and opened it, revealing his chopsticks.

"I came in prepared." He said. Everyone was just holding not to laugh at this point.

Atsu-san looked rejected and slumped down. He was about to eat the food that was for Omi-omi-san but Omi-omi-san grabbed his hand and ate the food.

"Idiot. I didn't say you get to eat what was supposed to be mine."

Atsu-san blushed heavily. It was my first time seeing him like this. Oh gosh, these two.

Everyone groaned.

Meian-san reminded them that I was in front of them but I told him that I knew about their relationship and congratulated them both.

To my surprise, Shoyo-san ended up telling the rest of the team that I have a crush back in school. Everyone wanted to know the details about this crush of mine and I just fall into silence. Kotarou-san kept on bugging me about it and went emo-mode when I didn't tell it to me and saying how it's unfair that Shoyo-san knew it but not him. Defeated, I just told them about my dilemma and the kind of person my crush is. Knowing how the team loves to gossip, I didn't give them the full details and Miyuki-senpai's name.

"He got some balls if he's going to reject you." Meian-san said and everyone agreed.

This is so embarrassing.

"You want me to introduce you to some single and extroverted people? I know a lot." Wan-san suggested. I shook my head.

Oh god.

"Your taste in men is like Shoyo-kun's. It's no wonder ya both get along so well." Atsu-san wiggled his eyebrows.

I want to punch him right now.

My lunchtime with them wasn't exactly how I imagined it to be.

"Oh, that reminds me," I nearly shouted which startled the team. I then turned to Shoyo-san. "Are your legs okay Shoyo-san?"

"What do you mean?" He let out a nervous laugh.

"A while ago Tobio-san said you might have leg cramps from exercising too much. How do you feel now?"

Everyone was quiet and then they all whistled to Shoyo-san. He was all red and there was some steam coming out of his head.

"I-it's all good Eijun-kun. I fully warmed up my body."

"Not warmed enough I assume." Omi-omi-san smirked. Shoyo-san hid his face on the table.

"D-don't mind Shoyo-san! It's normal to forget this sort of thing. But always remember not to overwork your body. You are an athlete after all! You guys are the role models of today's youth." I said, comforting him. He must be ashamed for not warming up properly huh?

"Hear that Hinata? Don't overwork your body." Wan-san was holding his stomach while laughing too much.

"Just shut up. All of you." He said.

"EH? Even me?" I yelled.

Kotarou-san took a spoon full of soup and gestured me to eat it. "Junei! Ignore them. Just eat up! Eat more because you'll be going all out later." He smiled. I nodded as I opened my mouth.

2:10pm

We practiced in one of the arena's smaller gyms before heading out to the locker room to prepare. Outside, more people are getting in the arena. I saw Osa-san in his food stall and he gave me another onigiri before I head to the locker room to change. It was the realistic cat onigiri again. I glared at him.

"Don't worry. It ain't natto." He smiled.

"It better not be." I pulled out my tongue as he waved us goodbye. He's going to be a bit busy as more people are lining up for his onigiris.

When we're in the locker room, the team surprised me with another gift. I opened it and it was a black jersey with three golden claws at the bottom of the jersey and the team's signature logo, the jackal. It's the official MSBY Black Jackals jersey. I've always wanted to be in the same team as Shoyo-san and I can't believe that it's going to happen. I look at the jersey again. I grinned widely as I saw my name and number behind the jersey.

Sawamura
18

I blinked.

"Well, what you do think?" Shoyo-san asked. The team all leaned forward to wait for my answer.

I closed my eyes, my heart now feeling pumped as the game is about to start soon.

My day off is going to end soon too.

Nothing wrong if I go all out in the court later right?

I opened my eyes, everyone all gasped in excitement as I put on the jersey.

Fits like an old glove.

"Let's go and take down some eagles."
