"Ross, you're dorky CIT brother is being a pain again," Hazel practically screamed as she barged into the Woodchuck cabin.
Xander followed behind her with an apologetic smile that Emma didn't see. She was still scrolling through her phone. Ever since Gladys started dating the park ranger that lived in town, she expanded the use of cellphones to the entire weekend. That meant on Saturdays Emma would hide in the cabin for at least half an hour on her phone. That's usually how long it took until Lou would notice that her friend was missing from whatever outdoor activity she was supposed to be participating in.
"Give me that," Hazel groused as she snatched the phone out of Emma's hands.
"Hey! Rude," Emma pouted. She uncrossed her feet at the ankles and sat up on her bed.
Hazel turned to Xander and demanded, "Tell her what he's doing!"
Xander sighed as he sat on the end of Emma's bunk. "What Hazel is trying to say is that the counselors at the French immersion camp across the lake have invited us to a party tonight…"
"A party! Ooo la la. I already have the perfect black dress that really shows off my legs," Emma said excitedly as she admired her long legs.
Hazel rolled her eyes and then glanced at Xander, who was grinning in Emma's direction. She scrunched her nose and snarked, "Perfect to show off all that gross hair. Guess you're in the Woodchuck cabin for a reason, furry legs."
"What hair!" Emma gasped as she patted and inspected her legs.
Hazel cackled and plopped down on the bed to block Xander's view of Emma.
Xander shook his head and continued, "The thing is we won't be able to sneak off to the party because…"
"Your dorky brother found out and now he's gonna rat us out to Gladys!" Hazel shook her fist menacingly. She said through her teeth, "And he's not responding to threats."
Xander lowered Hazel's fist and gave her a look of disapproval. She sighed dreamily and melted under his touch. He quickly let go of her. Emma rolled her eyes and tucked her phone into her pocket. She figured her thirty minutes were almost up anyway.
"Ravi seems pretty set on telling Gladys. I've offered to do his laundry, take over trash duty for him. Heck, I even offered to write him a song and play it at the next bonfire," Xander recounted.
"I honestly thought you had him on that one," Hazel said, shaking her head at the memory.
"But he won't budge. He said something about wanting to impress Gladys so that she makes him a counselor next year," Xander finished explaining.
Emma sighed and said, "I've told Ravi a million times that Gladys will make us counselors next year. She knows he's so desperate to be one that she probably won't pay us."
"She doesn't pay me," Hazel grumbled and crossed her arms.
"And," Xander said, "Because he's your sister, we figured…"
"You could get the twerp to keep his mouth shut," Hazel said, rudely cutting off Xander. She wiggled her eyebrows and smirked. "I want to get to know Jean Claude a little better."
"I hope so," Xander murmured.
"But my heart will always belong to Xander," Hazel sighed as she pressed her hands to her heart.
"I hope not," he murmured.
Emma chuckled. She moved her legs to dangle over the edge of the bed. She said, "You two are going about this all the wrong way. Bribes don't work on Ravi. He already has everything he wants and he's a weirdo that likes to do his own work." She gave Hazel a pointed look and added, "And threats don't work either. He's used to them because duh Zuri."
"Fine," Hazel huffed, crossing her arms. "What does work?"
"Distraction," Emma smirked as she stood up from the bunk. She walked over to Lou's side of the cabin and squatted. She opened the bottom drawer and searched. "The key is to distract him and then get him to agree to whatever you want. All you have to do is get him to agree not to tattle. Once he's no longer distracted, he still won't go back on his word."
"Oh, like an honor your word type thing." Xander nodded as he leaned back on his palms. He said, "Makes sense. He's always been a pretty honest guy."
"Too honest," Hazel said with an annoyed look. She narrowed her eyes as she stood from Emma's bunk and put her hands on her hips. "And how exactly are we supposed to distract him? Tell him there's a dork convention in town for people with boring hobbies?"
"Don't you play Mega Mutants with him," Xander asked with a knowing smile directed at Hazel.
"Shut your beautiful mouth," Hazel grumbled.
"Oh, I have a recipe for distraction," Emma said as she continued to search. Finally, she found what she had been looking for. "Yes!" She stood up and wiggled a pair of shorts. "The first ingredient."
Suddenly, Lou angrily stormed into the cabin. She gave Emma a stern look and said, "Am I gonna have to take that phone away? You were supposed to be helping me and the Bobcat counselors review with the campers what plants are safe to eat!"
Emma glanced at the alarm clock on her nightstand. She said brightly, "Thirty minutes exactly! And my second ingredient."
Hazel raised her eyebrow and asked, "Lou's the second ingredient?"
"Ingredients?" Lou furrowed her brow as she looked to Emma for an explanation.
"Do you need us to help get anything else?" Xander asked as he stood up from the bunk.
"Xander's my partner to look for ingredients!" Hazel declared as she wrapped her arms around Xander's bicep.
Xander sighed and rolled his eyes up towards the sky. Lou continued to look confused as she loosely crossed her arms. Emma shook her head and smirked.
"No need," Emma said. "The recipe only calls for two ingredients." She held the shorts out towards Lou. "Bestie, do me a favor? Put these on. I need to ask Ravi a question."
Lou frowned as she took the shorts from Emma. She tilted her head to the side and said, "Ask him a question? But why do I have to wear these? You know how I am about shorts." She twisted shyly and then leaned forward and whispered, "Mama's got a body like a back road."
"Yep, and those curves are going to get me into a French immersion party," Emma said bluntly. She looked over her shoulder to Xander and Hazel to say, "Between all of his stammering and blushing I'll ask him not to tell Gladys."
"Oh, gotcha," Xander nodded.
"What is she talking about?" Lou asked, giving confused looks to Xander and Hazel as Emma grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the bathroom.
Emma told her boyfriend, "Sweetie, go find Ravi and meet us in the mess hall."
"Yep."
Hazel blinked as the bathroom door slammed shut with Lou and Emma out of view. She rested her head on Xander's arm and grinned up at him. "If Emma's stupid plan doesn't work, do you want to be my Jean Claude?"
Xander grimaced as he leaned away from her. "Definitely not," he said, like her idea left a bad taste in his mouth. He glanced at the door and his expression brightened. "I don't think you have to worry, though. We're going to that party cause there's no way Ravi's going to rat us out now. A distraction? Lou wore shorts three weeks ago at the lake, and I watched Ravi walk right off the pier without noticing."
"Guess blondie knows her brother," Hazel shrugged. She let go of Xander's arm and stepped over to Emma's trunk of clothes. "Now to find that black dress and ruin it!"
"Hazel, no!" Xander said sternly.
He picked her up and carried her out of the cabin as she complained, "But I don't want Emma to distract you!"
