Griff had been both excited and nervous about the last day of camp. This would be the first time he would be picked up and taken to a permanent home. He was looking forward to having Xander as a big brother and parents that would take care of him. He also knew that having Xander's parents as his new adoptive parents meant returning to Camp Kikiwaka next year. And that's what he looked forward to the most: all of the friends he had made from Grizzly and Woodchuck cabin.
"I'm so happy for you Griff," Lou said as she, Ravi, and Griff stood around the firepit on the Great Lawn.
"Me too," Ravi added with a smile in Griff's direction. "As one myself, I can speak from experience and say that I think you'll make an excellent younger brother."
"Whatever, dude," Griff said with a light chuckle. "I'm just glad to get away from Jorge's pizza surprise."
"We can never let him volunteer in the kitchen again," Lou said seriously, giving Ravi a look.
"Agreed." Ravi returned his attention to Griff. "You're about to join a really good family, Griff. So don't be nervous."
"Yeah, I've known the McCormicks for a really long time and they're great," Lou said.
"And remember, you have all of our numbers if you feel like you need something." Ravi loosely folded his arms behind his back. "I understand adapting to a family can be a bit of a challenge. You know, going from sort of being on your own to a group of people that love and support you."
"Well, you guys were always sorta like my family," Griff admitted. He shyly looked down at his wrist and twisted the watch Emma had given him for Christmas in July. "Especially you guys. I mean… you two were always helping me and making sure I fit in or whatever…"
Memories of Ravi defending him when everyone thought he stole Gabby the guitar; of Lou and Ravi writing letters to him so he didn't feel left out for not getting mail; of Lou and Ravi caring enough to find out why he hated Christmas; so many memories quickly ran through Griff's mind.
He shrugged, not making eye contact with either of them, and murmured, "I guess having you two were the closest I've had to parents, so far."
Lou's eyes were shiny and watery as she clutched her hands to her heart. Ravi had his hands on his hips and was shaking his head as tears streamed down his face.
"Keep it together, Ravi," the Grizzly CIT said in a strained voice. "Oh, I give up!"
"Come here!" Lou shouted brightly.
She and Ravi rushed forward and wrapped Griff in a group hug. The camper chuckled and rolled his eyes, but his heart felt closer to full the way it always did when Lou and Ravi were giving him support and attention. But he wouldn't tell them that.
"Ugh, okay, guys. Chill. I need to go finish packing," Griff said, making sure to sound slightly annoyed.
He wiggled out of their embrace and gave them one last look before running off. He tried to look nonchalant, but his expression was anything but. There was admiration in his eyes and the corner of his lip was upturned enough to see the smile he was trying to suppress. Lou took a step forward to chase after him and hug him again, but she stopped herself so she wouldn't aggravate him before he finished packing. Ravi was busy wiping tears from his face and mentally planning a trip to visit Griff before school started in the fall.
"They grow up so fast, don't they Papa Grizzly," Lou sighed as she watched Griff from a distance entering his cabin.
"They certainly do." Ravi moved closer to Lou as he nodded. He looked over at her and saw that a stray tear had escaped. He rubbed his thumb across her cheek and smiled. "He's going to do great with the McCormicks."
Lou linked her arm with his and agreed, "I know. And I'll check in on him every other weekend cause my hometown's not far from Xander's."
"You know where we should take him before school starts," Ravi began as they turned to walk toward the mess hall.
Lou gasped excitedly. "Aunt Tater's Crocodile Farm?"
"No," Ravi said, furrowing his brow. "Paris."
"I don't know how much culture he's gonna get in Paris," Lou muttered.
Ravi rolled his eyes but leaned into her shoulder and laughed, which caused her to laugh too.
