It was late in the afternoon when the Ross siblings and Griff were at a picnic table on the Great Lawn. Zuri and Griff were seated on top of the table giving Ravi odd looks as he stood in front of them. He was frantically scratching beneath the crown of bright-colored flowers on his head. Emma leaned over her brother's shoulder to inspect his hair for any signs of a rash.
"Maybe I should lift it," Emma suggested. She tried to put her hands on the leaves, but her brother swatted her away.
"No, no, no! Leave it and see if you see anything around it. It's terribly itchy," Ravi instructed. He stopped scratching for a moment so his older sister could get a better look at the problem without removing the crown.
"Then why are you wearing it?" Griff asked, looking as if the Grizzly counselor was a complete idiot.
Ravi gave Griff an incredulous look as he lightly scratched under the crown again. "Because Lou made it for me. Like duh," Ravi scoffed.
"But you're obviously allergic to those flowers," Zuri said, rolling her eyes. She added mockingly, "Like duh."
Griff chuckled and fist bumped Zuri. Ravi glared at both campers as he used both hands to scratch beneath the crown. A few petals fell to his shoulders and he shook them off.
Emma gave up trying to find a rash. She leaned against the edge of the picnic table and said, "Okay. We get that Lou gave you the flowers. But that doesn't explain why you're still wearing it when it's making you do... that." She motioned to her brother, who was still scratching.
"I don't know," Ravi replied. He forced his hands away from the crown and tried to concentrate on not scratching. "She gave it to me as a gift, I suppose. And she seemed pretty happy that I was wearing it."
"So," Griff said with a shrug. "If she made me something that stupid, I'd just say thanks and toss it somewhere in our cabin."
"That's because you're a normal person," Zuri said. "Lou made me a pair of wooden clogs. I told her thanks but there was no way I was walking around in those torture devices. And I would've chucked them in the garbage first thing if they were making me itch like that."
"And if Lou knew you were allergic, she wouldn't want you wearing that thing," Emma said, frowning as her brother winced.
"It's not so bad," Ravi lied. He switched to patting instead of scratching. "And I want Lou to be happy."
"I mean, watching you scratch yourself like a wakadoo makes me happy. There's not much entertainment at this camp," Zuri said. "But Lou likes boring stuff, so you can just ditch the crown and be yourself if you want her to be happy."
Ravi stammered as he looked at Zuri, "You think so?"
"She seems pretty happy to me already," Griff said. He tossed the dodgeball he had been holding from one hand to the other. "I saw her say good morning to a plant once."
Ravi smiled as he said softly, "She's sweet, isn't she?"
Emma's eyes lit up in realization. She grinned at Ravi, pointing an accusatory finger at him. She exclaimed, "O.M.G. You like her!"
"What!" Ravi shouted with his eyes wide. He swiped at a stray leaf that was dangling against his ear. "I do not! That's… that's… I do not!"
"Convincing argument you've got there," Zuri teased. "By the way, the moment you put on that stupid flower crown, it was obvious that you've got it bad."
"Real bad," Griff added with a chuckle. "You look like a moron. And that was before all the scratching." Griff scratched himself frantically to make a point.
Ravi rolled his eyes. He couldn't resist scratching once more near his forehead. He said sarcastically, "You've all been so much help. Thanks."
Emma still wore a proud grin on her face. "You can get all huffy, but I'm right." She nodded and said in a sing-song voice, "You like her! You want to date her!"
"Oh, how mature, Emma!" Ravi huffed, crossing his arms angrily and in an attempt to keep from scratching.
Emma laughed as she waved her hand in his direction. "You're the one walking around with a head rash instead of just asking the girl out."
"Yeah, dude. That's kid stuff," Griff said, nodding in agreement.
"And that's coming from kids," Zuri added.
"I don't have time for this. And you're wrong, Emma. I don't like Lou. I mean, I like her but… not romantically," Ravi said, loosening his arms and looking up at the sky. "She's my friend. We're friends. And I appreciate her… and care about her." He looked back down to the group and added quickly, "I mean, like I care about everyone! Because we're all friends! All of us!"
"Again, super convincing," Zuri said with a smirk.
Emma chuckled, covering her mouth behind her hand as she sat on the bench. Griff gave Zuri another fist bump and raised his eyebrows at Ravi.
"This is pointless. I've said what I needed to say." Ravi stuck his nose in the air and adjusted the flower crown on his head. "Now if you'll excuse me. I'm going to the lake."
"Campers, would you mind telling me who is on lifeguard duty today at the lake?" Emma asked, feigning ignorance.
"Lou!" Zuri and Griff responded at the same time, giving Ravi knowing looks.
Ravi felt his face heat with embarrassment. It temporarily blocked out the itching. He shifted from one foot to the other as he tried to think of a clever response.
"That's right! Guess you better hurry along so Lou can see that you're still wearing the crown. For no particular reason of course," Emma said sweetly even though there was amusement in her eyes.
Ravi gave up trying to think of a response, so he turned his head with a sniff to show his disregard and walked away.
He heard Zuri call out behind him, "When you get there ask her out, doofus! Or I'm not visiting you in the infirmary!"
