A/N: I'm sorry this took so long! Honestly, the past 2 weeks have been the busiest I have been in such a long time, and then the final season of Lucifer came out last week and it blew my mind so much that this got a little harder to write.
This epilogue is definitely more to appease my Adrienette heart more than anything else, but I do really like this part. I did accidentally write nearly 12000 words though, so this is only the first half. But the second half lost it a bit, it feels alit more forced and I'm not very happy with it, so I'm not going to post it. I may decide to redo it later on, but I have no time now or any time soon!
Anyway, I hope you enjoy and thank you all so much for reading!
Epilogue
Six Years Later…
*Marinette's POV*
"...Dr of Mathematics, Adrien Agreste," The announcer called as Adrein, the youngest graduate to get his PhD, walked across the stage to accept his certificate from the head of the university. I was sitting with our family and a few friends, namely Alya and Nino, in the fourth row, in between my mum and Adrein's, whooping as he smiled and waved down at us. His pride in his achievement radiated off his face as he went to take his seat again, watching the rest of his class accept their qualifications.
After the ceremony, every single person in the room stood up and clapped, the cheering becoming deafening. I made my way through the crowd, our family following behind until I found him, leaping into his arms and throwing mine around his neck.
"Congratulations doctor!" I exclaimed over the loud noise of the auditorium. "You did it! The past few years of extremely hard work paid off!"
"Indeed they did! I can't believe it's over. I have this summer and then I'm straight back at it with teaching. And I couldn't have done any of it without any of your support," Adrien said, looking out to the rest of the people behind me, hugging them all in turn.
"Congratulations my son!" Emilie said to Adrien, hugging him close to her.
"Thanks mum! Did you bring it?" he asked her, confusing me a bit.
"I did," Emilie replied, reaching into her purse and pulling out something that she slipped straight into his awaiting hand.
"Thank you so much mum." He then looked to my father, giving him a discreet nod before turning towards me, placing his hands on my arms.
"Marinette. I told you all literally one minute ago that I could not have gotten this far without support from any of you, but you are the one who provided the most. I really could not have succeeded in anything if I didn't have you. Ever since the whole mess with my father, you have been here and stuck by my side the whole way. And not only by me, by my mum and our friends. I also can't not mention how proud I am of your success since you graduated. That year you did in industry and now being the best lead designer that the Agreste label has ever seen, on track to take over one day!" he laughed, winking at his mum. "Over the past six years, I have fallen so much deeper in love with you, and I really can't imagine my life without you. I want to see you everyday, spend every waking moment with you, wake up with you in my arms, raise a family with you and grow old with you. I'm sorry that I have not planned something ultra romantic like the pre proposal from our first date, but I couldn't wait to do this and then I got word that this was ready yesterday and immediately knew I had to do this now," he stopped for a second, pausing to drop to one knee, taking a small black box out of his pocket. A gasp escaped my lips as my hands involuntarily went up to my face, the tears starting to fall slowly from my eyes.
"Marinette, the love of my life, will you marry me?" he finished, his face breaking out into a nervous smile, opening the little black box to reveal a stunning diamond ring.
My brain had stopped working. The entire room had gone silent, awaiting my answer. I shook my head in disbelief, my face breaking out in a smile that rivaled his.
"Oh Adrien," I breathed tears falling down my face placing my hands on either side of his face. "Of course I'll marry you, you goof!"
I didn't think it was physically possible, but his face broke out into the widest smile I'd ever seen. He stood up with my hands still on his face, and pulled me into him, my arms sliding around his neck as he kissed me with so much joy, lifting me up by the waist and spinning me around as our audience of recent PhD grads and their families applauded, eventually returning to their own conversations and celebrations.
"I love you so much Adrien," I whispered to him when he put me down. "And you don't need to apologise for not planning anything, you've spent the last 6 years of our relationship planning and surprising me, including this moment!"
"I love you too Mari, so so so much!" he said before taking the ring out of the box and slipping it onto my finger. I stared at it for a minute, examining the oval diamond set in between two square rubies and two smaller almost black emeralds on either side. I looked into his eyes, silently asking if the significance was what I thought it was. He nodded, confirming what I already thought, the rubies and emeralds were to symbolise the other parts of us as well, the two alter egos who were still not together as far as Paris were concerned. They were now only ever seen every now and again, 'patrolling' the city to check everything was still ok, every so often helping a stuck cat or lost child. Adrien then signalled to look on the inside of the band, where, engraved in the metal, was the same inscription I had embroidered in the cuff of the first hoodie I gave him on our first date - CN LB - along with a second inscription - AA MDC.
"It's beautiful Adrien!" I said, kissing him once again, tears threatening to spill from my eyes again once we broke apart. But I then turned serious. "I just have one condition to my answer."
A worried expression fell over Adrien's face, making me laugh.
"Oh honey! It's nothing bad, I promise!" I laughed, watching as Adrien's face relaxed. "I just want us to get married before you start your new job after summer."
"That's completely fine by me! The sooner the better as far as I'm concerned. But, out of curiosity, why the rush?" Adrien asked, visibly relieved.
"Well," I started, before looking over to our family, all watching us intently for an opening to come over to break our little bubble, and decided to stand on my tip toes and lean closer to his ear to whisper, "I think I might be pregnant."
Adrien's jaw dropped, his face brightening as he stared into my eyes to make sure I wasn't joking.
"What! When?" he exclaimed in a whisper.
"I think the last time you came back home, nearly 5 weeks ago now, to move some of your stuff from your room here back into our place. I was supposed to start my period 3 weeks ago. I'm going to take a test later on."
"Oh Mari! That's amazing," he exclaimed, hugging and spinning me around again.
"I'm so glad you said that! But don't mention it to our parents yet. We need to confirm it first."
"That's true. Follow my lead when they ask what we've been discussing."
7 Weeks Later... The wedding day…
*Adrien's POV*
I don't believe we actually did it. Through some sort of planning miracle, and lots of cooperation with our parents, Marinette and I managed to organise our wedding in 6 weeks, convincing everyone that it was so soon because we had already been together for nearly 7 years and were ready to start our marriage, which was not a complete lie!
We had also managed to dissuade our friends from throwing us wild bachelor and bachelorette nights without telling them the reasons behind our decision, the reason being because Marinette was pregnant. Instead, we opted for a calm party, much like the ones we used to have while we were at school, with our closest friends. At the end of the night, we split up to go to our separate parents homes for the night.
However, Ladybug and Cat Noir met on top of the Eiffel Tower whilst everyone else was sleeping, both channeling our teenage sleeves and sneaking out of our houses. Neither of us wanted to be separated for the entire night, so we decided that we would meet there and just sit together. It was one of those amazing nights where we talked about everything and nothing. We had so many plans for our future, and we were both so excited about the new adventure that was growing inside Marinette. Eventually, we dozed off, our heads resting next to each other, waking up to watch the sunrise before we headed back home.
But now, we are actually married! Dr and Mrs Agreste! The ceremony was held at a picturesque little church in front of our parents, Marinette's Chinese great uncle, her grandparents, Chloe and her family, my aunt Amelie and Felix and, of course, Alya and Nino. It was a perfectly small and intimate group to exchange vows and rings in front of.
Mari and I had chosen simple wedding rings, both of them identical in colour and matching Mari's engagement ring. But, they did include one special detail. We had the insides of the bands inscribed with 'It's you and me against the world; forever,' along with our wedding date. They were now residing on our left ring fingers, my left hand gripping her right hand as we pulled up to the reception venue. I turned towards Marinette, looking stunning in her homemade wedding dress, perfectly tailored to hide the small baby bump that had showed up early on her tiny frame.
"Are you ready to do this Mrs Agreste?" I asked her, my lips twisting upwards in a smile that I could not stop.
"Yes I think so," she replied, her free hand absent mindedly making its way to her stomach. "I'm just a little nervous about what they'll think." My free hand reached over to the one she was resting on her stomach, placing it gently on top.
"It will be fine! Honestly, if it wasn't for school, I would have proposed much sooner! But they'll all be very happy, I'm sure of it," I reassured, leaning over to place a lingering kiss on Mari's lips.
"Ok, let's do this," she said, taking a deep breath before nodding to me that we could go in.
I opened my door, climbing out of the car to be greeted by the cheers from some of our friends and extended family who were attending the much larger reception being held at the fanciest hotel in Paris. We were lucky they had a last minute cancelation for the exact room we wanted, a gorgeous ballroom with a wrap-around terrace, providing an exquisite view of the Seine and the Eiffel tower. We thought that it would be a venue that honoured both sides of us, even though there were only 4 people who knew the true significance.
Once I climbed out, I held my hand out to Mari who had slid across the back seat to come out on the pavement side. She closed the door behind her and fixed her dress a little before taking my hand again and letting me lead her inside through the throng of people. It was one of those moments where I was glad that my celebrity had died down a bit once I stopped modelling, allowing us to not be bothered by paparazzi or 'adoring' fans. This was even despite the fact that our guest list had some very high profile people, including my mother.
But even if there were a few cameras or uninvited guests outside, nothing could put a damper on the joy I was feeling right now, surrounded by all my friends and family on what can only be described as the best day of my life.
The reception started off with a delicious meal, carefully picked by Marinette's parents. It was followed by an amazing dessert selection, this time actually made by the Dupain-Cheng's. This did include a gorgeous, fairly traditional, 3 tier vanilla wedding cake, one that everybody would enjoy.
After everyone had enjoyed their cake and were digesting all the delicious food, Nino and Alya stood up to give their joint best man and maid of honour speech.
"We've known Adrien and Marinette since they were blind 14 year olds, unwilling to confess their rather obvious feelings to one another," Alya started. "But now, at 24, I don't think I could see their story being anything other than what it is; meant to be. These two have been through thick and thin together over the last 7 years, and their relationship has only gotten stronger. Because of this, they emanate so much warmth and love that makes anyone around them immediately know that they are in the presence of something truly special.." Alya stopped to brush a tear from the corner of her eye, then passed the paper she was holding to Nino who picked up the speech from where she left off.
"I couldn't agree more with my wife. I still remember the day our best friends officially told us that they were together," Nino looked as if he was trying to hold back a laugh at the memory. "Alya had told me what had happened in the elevator the day before, having witnessed everything while filming coverage for the Ladyblog. My first thought was shock. I truly couldn't believe that they had finally gotten over themselves! And with an elevator make out session no less! But then we spent the whole of the next day with them, witnessing the new found closeness and comfort they had with each other. It felt as if they had been together forever, even though Marinette had only gotten over her stuttering the day before!"
The whole room burst out laughing at that, Marinette's face turning red at the reminder.
"We love you both so much and we can't wait to watch you grow old and raise annoyingly beautiful kids together!" Alya picked up again, the tears actually falling now.
"From one set of married best friends to another, we wish you the best!" Nino finished, wrapping his arm around Alya's shoulders as they both raised their glasses towards us in a toast. As they sat down, I nodded to Marinette and stood up myself, readying myself for my own speech.
"Thank you so much Alya and Nino. I think I speak for both my wife and I when I say that you two really are the best friends we can ask for, and that we'd love for our kids to, one day soon, be as close as we are," I started, pausing to see if anyone had picked up my slight hint, which no one had. "Well now I'd like to talk about this glowing woman sitting next to me. You, Marinette, are the love of my life and have made every single one my dreams come true. I said this when I proposed, but I really would not have been able to come out the other end of all the Hawkmoth drama in one piece if it was not for your unwavering support. This support then carried on throughout our University years, despite not seeing each other as often as we would have liked and you finishing your education much sooner than me. But I will always treasure the memories from the year I did my masters degree in the city and we actually lived together, getting our own place, that probably needs to be bigger now, only for me to move out again to be closer to school for my PhD. But you were still there, checking on me all the time all while moving up the ranks with your own career. You have no idea how proud I am that you will one day take over the Agreste Fashion house, now as an Agreste. I will forever be grateful that our baby girl will have you as a role model, not just as an amazing mother, but as a woman who is not afraid of going after what she wants in every avenue of her life." I paused again now, watching as the expressions on our loved ones' faces became confused as they tried to decipher the hints I was threading to my speech. I then took Marinette's hand and pulled her up from her chair to stand next to me, my hand surreptitiously moving to her lower belly, where her small bump was hiding under the full skirt of her dress.
"I love you so much Marinette, and I promise to fall in love with you, our little girl and any other future children we may have even more every day as we embark on this new journey in our life together, " I finished, smiling as I bent down to kiss Mari's belly, confirming the theories that were probably spreading around the room. Both Mari and I looked directly at our parents, all three of their jaws hanging open as they took in the news.
"You're pregnant?!" mum exclaimed, her hand going up to wipe the tears falling from her eyes when Mari nodded in confirmation.
"I am! We're expecting a baby girl, due early spring next year," she confirmed, her eyes also dripping with tears. The entire room exploded with applause and cheers of congratulations, a sound that made Marinette visibly relax. Her parents still hadn't said anything, but their faces showed that they could not be happier to find out that they would be grandparents, reaffirming this by standing up and wrapping Mari and I in a massive hug, beckoning for my mum to join in.
"Congratulations!" Sabine whispered, a wide smile spreading across her face as she moved away from the big family hug. The applause in the room had died down, leaving off to a buzz of hushed whispers. "I'm so happy for you both! When did you find out?"
"I had my suspicions when Adrien proposed, which is why I told him I wanted the wedding to happen before he started his new job. We then confirmed the suspicions later on with a pregnancy test and had our first doctors appointment the next week plus a second 2 weeks ago where I had a bunch of tests done, including a blood test. The results came a couple days ago, which is how we already know that it's a girl," Marinette explained, her beaming smile adding to her current glow. I watched her talk animatedly to her parents for a couple minutes until she looked up and caught my eye, winking. Then a look of realisation crossed her face and then, excusing herself from the conversation, walked back to her seat, picking up her glass and a spoon, calling the attention of the room back to her.
"I'm sorry about that momentary distraction, I may have a mild case of early baby brain and forgot that I had prepared a speech as well," she laughed, taking a hold of my hand as I sat down, looking straight into my eyes as she carried on. "There's not much more that I can say that hasn't already been said, but I'm going to try. Adrien Agreste, you are the best thing that's ever happened to me. I love you so much that it hurts and it has only grown from the gut wrenching crush that I had for you back when we first met. You were the sweetest person ever, who made such a selfless effort to make friends with the girl who thought that you'd be exactly like Chloe - sorry Chlo, but you were a bit of a fiend back then! I don't think I can ever forget your laugh when the umbrella collapsed on my head, it was so bright, something I needed to hear after that day. I'm sorry that I couldn't speak to you properly for a while after that, but you were still there, and always seemed to know what I was saying. Sometimes, I do wonder if we would have been together sooner if I had known that you were feeling the same about me as I was for you and had therefore confessed sooner, but then I think about all the special moments we've had together as a couple and I know that I would not change a thing. I mean, you gave me a pre proposal ring on our first proper date because the unsaid feelings between us had grown into full blown love before we'd even managed to say anything to each other! I'm so happy that I get to spend the rest of my life with you, and I really can't wait for all the moments that marriage and raising a family will bring." A slow tear was starting to roll down my face, one that Mari spotted and carefully wiped off my face, before giving me a small wink.
"I love you so much my radiant…"
My head shot up when I heard her say the word, knowing immediately what she was going to say next.
"Carefree…"
I stood up, placing my hands on her hips, looking into the playful look in my wife's eye, daring her to continue with a look of my own.
"Dreamy…"
Her face was now inches from mine when she finished her sentence.
"Adrien…"
I had caught her lips in mine before she could add the last word, feeling her melt into me when the entire room called out;
"The fragrance!"
Both Mari and I burst into laughter with the rest of our guests, breaking the kiss and resting our foreheads together.
"You really had to do that, didn't you, my beautiful wife!" I whispered.
"Of course I did my handsome husband! It was completely worth it!" she pecked my lips quickly before spinning in my arms and raising her glass to the rest of the room again, effectively capturing their attention. "Now that's enough sap and speeches for one night! Let the party begin!" she called out. Nino jumped up, whopping as he made his way over to the DJ booth, the ushers hanging around the sides of the room starting to move the tables to make room in the middle of the gorgeous ballroom. While the room was abuzz with movement and therefore distracted, I let go of Mari's waist and grabbed her hand, pulling us over to the outdoor terrace to watch the now setting sun over the magnificent Eiffel tower view. The now upbeat party music drifted out to us while we stood at the edge, our heads together, arms wrapped around each other, in probably the only moment we were going to get to ourselves for the rest of the night.
Eventually, we heard Nino call us over for our first dance. I grabbed Marinette's hand and dragged her towards the now clear space in the middle of the room, stopping in the middle and pulling her body into mine for our first dance as a married couple. The music started to play as we arrived, the notes of our song sending us into our own little bubble. I closed my eyes as we swayed, breathing in her sweet perfume. Then, as the song was finishing, I felt Mari shift so I opened my eyes, seeing her wide eyes looking up at me, filled with love and happiness. I leant down and placed my lips on hers in a sweet kiss, hearing the audience around us cheer and applaud as the music picked up once again, inviting our guests back to the dance floor.
We spent the rest of the evening mingling, thanking everybody for coming and their congratulations on the baby and dancing with our parents, friends and of course, each other. All too soon, it was time for Mari and I to go, the party dying down as we left, running upstairs to the room we had for the night, completely ready to start the rest of our lives together.
