Wyatt walked ahead a few cars; people were either standing outside their cars or just walking rapidly away leaving their car behind. As they got a closer look, they could see the source of the problem. There was a hole in the middle of the crossroads, growing increasingly wider. It looked as if the ground was melting away leaving a fiery downward tunnel.
"Oh, sh…oot" Sarah corrected herself after one look from her father. "That's a demonic wormhole"
"What? What does that mean?"
"It's a portal for demons to cruise between dimensions" she said staring as the hole grew wider and wider, which luckily made people all around believe it was a sinkhole and they all felt at risk of being swallowed in, so they backed away from it, keeping the by standers to a minimum. "They must have followed us here"
"How do you know?"
"Because the only way they can punch a hole like that in a different reality is by following good magic's trace. Hated when Grandpa Leo made me read all those books on interdimensional magic… don't hate it as much right now" she added as Wyatt stared at her having all the answers.
"So you've never actually seen one before?"
"Nope" she said as demons started jumping out from the hole frightening away the few people still too close to the site. Wyatt gave a step forward but Sarah stopped him on his tracks. "I got it, dad" her eyes went bright blue and she outstretched her hands to her sides. Demons started to burst left and right. Wyatt was in awe, but soon even her powers weren't enough as demons started jumping out by the tens. Sarah got most of them out, but Wyatt kept aiming for the ones who escaped her gaze best he could.
"There's trouble!" said Evan going for the door again. Sam hit the automatic lock to stop him but he orbed out to escape her this time.
"No questioning if he's Chris' kid" mumbled Sam scrambling out from her side door. "Evan, get back here!" She moved a lot slower than she would have liked at this moment, but she managed to catch Evan a couple cars away as he stood there watching the battle unfold ready to jump in himself. She took his arm and made him turn around halfway. "Wait a minute! They can handle it!" Sam said panting. "Wyatt and Sarah, they can…"
"Watch out!" said Evan as a demon shimmered behind her. Sam reacted and slammed her hand against the demon's head and started draining out every bit of energy it had until it burst away. "Good one" Sam smiled at Evan and to herself as the memory of having done that only once before came back to her mind; she wasn't entirely sure how or what she had done actually. "Hey!" shouted Evan as another demon raised a hand to strike Sam as she had her back to it.
He orbed in front of the demon, putting himself between his aunt and the incoming fiery blow. The demon saw no reason to stop his attack and hit Evan instead blowing him to pieces. Sam felt fire cursing through her and as the demon rose his fiery fist to strike a second lethal blow, she threw her arm up to block it and with her free hand held the demon by the throat. She saw there were actual flames cursing through her arm as she tightened her grip. The demon couldn't take the blue flames now running through him and he vanished between her fingers as he was vanquished away. She felt the air pulled away from her as the moment sunk in.
"Evan…" she whimpered.
"I'm OK" Evan told a frightened Sam a moment later as he regenerated. Stunned, she hugged him tightly in utter disbelief.
"How did…?"
"I regenerate like mom does. Sorry, I forgot to tell you. To be honest, I didn't think I needed to mention it. Are you OK?" Evan asked his very spooked aunt. She held onto him still, taking shallow breaths.
"Don't you ever do that to me again, you hear me?" she reprimanded him as they walked fast as they could to reach the others.
"Wyatt!" Sam held his hand as they came closer. Wyatt kept bursting demons left and right this time faster and more accurate as his enhanced powers made the job easier.
"Wish I had my darts" said Evan from behind Sarah, who smiled slyly as she turned to him. She nodded his way and he was suddenly holding five thin sharp daggers. "Sweet" he said and he threw the first one at a demon's face, jumping skillfully between the cars to retrieve it as the demon was blown into oblivion. He kept disposing of demons as effectively as any of them.
"We need to close this… whatever this is" said Sam.
"Your mother has a point" said Wyatt still blasting away. A couple people were timidly trying to come closer, phones at hand, which Evan kept orbing away saying sorry for each he made disappear.
"On it" said Sarah and the ground started to shake. Slowly the hole in the ground started to give in, closing back up, then opening back up a little, forcing Sarah to push even harder on her own skills. Her head hurt bad now and she could feel something dripping out her nose. She didn't mind what it was but Sam could see it was blood.
"You can do this, honey" said Sam placing her hand on Sarah's shoulder. Sarah made one last effort and closed the hole leaving no trace of it ever being there in the first place. She fell to her knees, struggling to catch her breath. Wyatt was already squatting down to heal her. "She alright?"
"She's fine" smiled Wyatt to them all. "Are you?" Sam nodded.
"There was this demon" Evan was telling them excitedly. "and Aunt Sam drained his ass!"
"Watch it…"
"Sorry, Uncle Wyatt" he apologized after getting another reprimanding look from his uncle. "Butt, his butt… and then there was this other guy whom aunt Sam just burnt from the inside out"
"Fire, really?"
"I think I might have borrowed those two" she smiled caressing her belly. "So proud of you" said Sam pulling Evan into a tight embrace again, staring at her daughter who leaned on Wyatt still recovering her strength.
"Just don't overdo it" advised Sarah. "Takes a toll on you, mom" Wyatt remembered how he had gotten to see that happening for himself. When she had been pregnant with the twins, she had gotten pretty badly bruised every time she tapped into their powers.
"Duly noted" Wyatt said as Sam reached to caress their daughter's face tenderly. "You should be careful yourself" he told her now.
"I know" Sarah nodded.
They made their way slowly back to the car as did everybody else. Once aboard, they took a moment holding each other's hands in a sports team winning a match sorta way, in silence, as the cars around them started to go back on their merry way.
MEANWHILE AT THE MANOR…
"Aunt Paige orbed home?" asked Chris sitting by the kids beside Bianca who had been playing with them trying to keep them entertained enough for them to finish with the decorations and the gifts from being orbed conveniently closer to them.
"Just now, but she'll be back soon. She had some stuff to sort out at her place" said Piper double checking everything around her as Leo smiled at her also sitting down with the kids.
"So, we're just waiting for the actual guests now" Chris said blowing on a noisemaker against Bianca's cheek playfully. Suddenly, demons started to shimmer in on either side of them. "Whoa, not the guests I was expecting" He jumped to his feet and started fighting them off as far from the kids as they could. Julian raised his shield as soon as he saw demons popping in, enclosing himself, his siblings, Leo and Melinda. Piper and Bianca were already engaged on either side of the room and more kept coming at a steady pace. Chris tried orbing the kids to the safe room but Julian wouldn't let him. A two-year-old was effectively blocking his powers.
"Chris! Orb them outta here!" shouted Piper as she blew another demon away.
"I'm trying!" said Chris dodging a fireball which shattered the mirror on the wall into a million pieces.
Bianca fought gracefully against a couple of demons with overly large blades instead of hands; bouncing off the wall and kicking them away best she could, but she took out her dagger out of the back of her pants and started throwing it around finally vanquishing some demons too.
"Brought a dagger to a children's party?" Chris shouted in argument as he fought off another demon with an energy ball.
"You really wanna get into this now?" said Bianca throwing it again at another demon. "Turns out I needed it, didn't I?" she said slashing a demon's throat.
"Still…" Chris ducked as flames burst his way. "Should have let me know you were…"
"Discuss it later!" said Piper as she was surrounded by grinning demons.
"Piper!" yelled Leo and was ready to go defend her no matter the outcome, when Julian pointed his little finger and the demons around her burst away, not unlike Sarah had done. They had no time to wonder what the hell had happened cause more demons kept coming.
Chris meant to go to his mother but was punched hard in the stomach and then put on his back by an invisible uppercut. He looked around looking for the fiend to no avail.
"Chris!" Bianca yelled and ran to him. A demon tailing her, which was blasted away by Piper. The demon, however, was not destroyed. A dark fog was left in its place. "You alright?" Bianca said helping Chris up. The fog started to sip through her nose, eyes and ears.
"I don't know what…" Chris started to explain as Bianca punched him square in the chest as soon as he was back up, pushing him hard against the wall. "What's wrong with you?" she wasn't talking and her eyes had gone completely black. She smiled slyly as she meant to attack once again, but Chris orbed away from her grasp.
"Bianca, snap out of it!" said Piper as Chris orbed closer to her. "I don't wanna hurt you!"
"Mom, don't!" pleaded Chris. Piper considered her son's words but at that moment she herself was kicked away by some invisible attacker. She was down and trying to see through the nothingness in front of her. Chris tried helping her back up but they kept being hit left and right by apparently nothing. Melinda kept crying as her mother kept failing to get back up. Leo stepped away from the kids trying to reach her, but Piper saw him.
"Stay there!" she said as she was kicked in the mouth finally breaking through as she spat blood now. "Show yourself, you coward!" she yelled. Melinda raised her little hand towards her, unsteadily between her sobbing hiccups. Time slowed around Piper and she finally saw it: A demon who had been speeding around throwing in punches before they could catch him. "Gotcha" said Piper and blew him away.
As suddenly as the demons had appeared, Sarah orbed in and started bursting the demons to pieces. Her eyes solid blue light again. "You guys alright?" Bianca didn't give her time to answer as she launched to attack Evan. He froze for a moment but Sarah grabbed Bianca by the throat telekinetically and saw her eyes.
"Don't hurt, mom!" said Evan. She gave him an apprehensive look and sighed, nodding in agreement.
