Chapter 6: Hard Family
The sound of incessant knocking on the bedroom door unceremoniously roused Anna from her slumber. She bit her lip, sitting up as the knocking came again.
"Get up, get up you useless brat." Her step-mother's voice snapped through the door. "You have work to do now stop lazing around and get to it."
Anna listened to the footsteps of her step-mother as she walked away before getting up and hurriedly getting dressed, it was yet another day for her, being stuck at home with her cruel step-family.
'All this...and no matter what I do its never good enough...I just…' She thought sadly.
She was jolted from her thoughts by the sound of her bedroom door again, instead of the tapping knock on her step-mother this was a louder single noise. Like a palm slamming against the door for that was exactly what it was, courtesy of her step-sister Alyssa.
"What's taking you so long, hurry up with breakfast already." Alyssa snapped.
Anna quickly pulled on the last of her clothes. "Coming."
She hurried out the door, trying not to look at Alyssa's sneering face as she passed.
"You shouldn't be lazing around in bed at this time anyway." Alyssa scoffed as she followed Anna. "Good for nothing orphan like you needs to earn her keep, you should've been up ages ago and breakfast should already have been made."
Anna fought not to tremble. "S-sorry."
Alyssa scoffed. "That's all your good for, snivelling and apologizing, you never get anything right."
Still being harangued by her step-sister, Anna made it to the kitchen and quickly got to work.
Anna spent the next half hour or so simply working, making the breakfast, grabbing her step-father's coffee when he demanded it and otherwise tidying up after her family. She knew she wouldn't even be allowed to so much as think of her own breakfast until they were done. Putting aside his morning paper and beginning to eat her step-father glared up at her.
"That's the third time this month you've done this girl." He growled. "I'll expect a vast improvement out of you in the future, understand."
Anna nodded; not trusting herself to speak. She hated feeling like this, she hated being so weak and helpless, but felt there was nothing she could do, not against her only family. Thankfully, breakfast passed without any more issue and after having her own breakfast, Anna made her way back to her room. Where, unbidden, her thoughts wandered to Sophia. She couldn't deny her attraction to the surprisingly confident nerdy girl, the tech genius blessed with beauty to go with her brains.
'Not to mention that take no shit attitude.' Anna reflected with a small smile. 'I only heard rumours, never saw it myself, but apparently she actually got in Alyssa's face and scared her so bad she didn't even come running to her parents to whine about it.'
Just thinking about that however let to a more melancholy feeling and a sad sigh from Anna. She truly wished she could be even one tenth as brave as Sophia was.
It was only when she returned to her room and picked up her phone from the bedside table did she discover just how her day could get worse. There were several texts from Tonya, each one more irritable than the last.
"Hey, we need to meet up, usual spot." The first one said, sent mere moments after she had gone down to make breakfast.
Swallowing anxiously, Anna read the others too.
"Hey, where are you, answer me?"
"Answer already."
Then, the last one, that was sent just before she returned. "Answer the damn phone, can't believe you're ignoring me like this, do I have to take steps."
She swallowed and quickly replied.
"Sorry, had to go and make breakfast for the family and all that, I'm free now."
She sent it and before long got a reply.
"Excuses, excuses, you know how this works." Was the reply. "Now hurry up, like I said, see you at the usual spot."
Anna sighed sadly but quickly pocketed her phone and hurriedly began getting ready to go out. The moment she left Alyssa emerged from her hiding place, glaring at the front door, clearly suspicious.
End of chapter, so we see an average morning for Anna and the life she has to lead, read and review please.
