Chapter 11: Breaking Through

Carl sighed as he lay back on his bed, staring up at the ceiling. It was odd, it was the weekend after all, a full day after the embarrassing and terrifying incident in the swimming pool locker room, yet Carl wasn't up to his usual activities. A Saturday morning with no school things to worry about, Carl could normally be expected to be found playing video games, occasionally being warned by Rick or Lori to keep the noise down. Yet instead he was just lying on his bed. He sighed as he continued to stare at the ceiling.

The reason for this change was simple. 'It's just, urgh, I can't help it, this awkwardness is getting out of hand. I can't deny...scared as I was about what we were going through...I still liked what I saw on Mikey. But…'

He groaned and turned over, finally tearing his gaze from that oh-so-fascinating spot on the ceiling. He knew beyond all doubt now that he had feelings for Mikey. He was just scared of Mikey not feeling the same, of rejecting him, worse turning on their friendship too.

'But the way he looked at me, the way he acted when we were captive...could he...really feel the same?' Carl wondered.

Groaning again he quickly got off the bed, pulling his shoes on and pulled out his phone, texting Mikey. There was only one way to resolve this and he needed to do it now.

Meanwhile, in his own room, Mikey was sitting by the window, gazing out into the back garden.

'I'm just glad those punks are finally paying for what they did, that was so humiliating...still, there was some good from it.' He reflected. 'He's said before he doesn't think he looks good, thinks he's too pale for it. But Carl looks great in his Speedo, he...oh man, get control of yourself Mikey.'

He tried to push the thoughts away, knowing full well he was blushing. He especially had to compose himself as there came a knock at the bedroom door.

"Y-yeah?"

"Mikey, it's me." Nicholas said. "Mind if I come in?"

"Oh, sure dad."

Nicholas entered and Mikey noted he still looked anxious.

"Just wanted to make sure everything was alright. I know you and Carl have been through a lot." Nicholas explained.

"Dad, it's cool. It was horrible at the time, but it's passed now and we all saw that things are gonna be dealt with by the police." Mikey explained. "I've just, had a lot on my mind lately, that's why it's been so quiet. It's nothing to worry about though."

Nicholas sighed. "Well, I hope it says that way, son. Just know, you can talk to your mom and I about anything."

Mikey smiled and nodded. "Yeah dad, thanks."

It was shortly after Nicholas left following that talk that Mikey's phone buzzed. He bit his lip, reading Carl's text before quickly replying and began pulling on his shoes, ready to go out and meet with Carl. A thought taking hold in his mind, maybe it was time to be honest, he was tired hiding away scared after all.

Exiting his home, Mikey saw Carl crossing the street towards his house, he had clearly sent the text just before leaving and got his reply just after getting out the front door.

"Hey Carl." Mikey greeted him with a smile.

He just hoped the smile hid his awkwardness as he met Carl at the end of the path.

"I'm glad you agreed to meet, we...we really need to talk." Carl explained as they began to walk down the sidewalk.

Mikey nodded. "Yeah. I know it has been pretty wild and...upsetting lately."

Carl grimaced. "That's an understatement, but yeah."

"So, what's up?" He asked, trying to remain casual.

Carl seemed to go into deep thought for a moment, as if trying to pick his words carefully. Finally however he sighed and stopped, catching Mikey off guard, he quickly stopped and turned to face Carl, briefly noting they were currently alone, somewhat off the usual paths, out of sight but able to easily head back.

"I've been thinking about this for a while, Mikey. It's what I was talking to Sophia about." He explained. "You remember we were talking about it, before…?"

Mikey nodded. "Yeah, I remember. What are you-?"

"I...I need to say this Mikey, I can't hide it anymore." Carl blurted out. "I...You don't know this but, I'm bi and, the past few weeks, I've been feeling, um, well…"
Mikey's eyes widened as Carl stammered. It shocked him, he never imagined this.

'Is, is Carl really saying that he...could I…?' He wondered.

Finally Carl composed himself. "What I'm trying to say Mikey, is...I've been growing attracted to you, seeing you, so differently. I...I actually think I'm, in love, with you and…"

"Carl."

Carl stopped, swallowing nervously, the words just came rushing out and now he wondered if he'd overstepped.

But Mikey was smiling, blushing but smiling.

"You, you really feel that way about me?" He asked and when Carl nodded, his smile widened. "I've, I've been trying to hold it back for so long, afraid of how you would react. But now you're telling me, you feel the same."

"Mikey, you-?"

"Yes Carl, I've been crushing on you for some time. I actually love you and...and…" Mikey explained.

Carl grinned and took Mikey's hands in his own, stopping Mikey's stammering, eyes wide. Carl nodded and, without any prompting, they knew what they wanted to do and so they officially began their relationship, sharing their first kiss.
