" I told you I had a bad feeling about going on duddykins birthday putting." I said with an eye roll.
" At least we got out of this place for even a little bit."
" yeah only to get stuck here till the end of time! Explain again what exactly happened! "
With a sigh Harry went on to tell me how he sort of accidentally let a snake loose and got Dudley stuck in a habit enclosure.
"So the glass just disappeared? Poof gone?" I deadpanned.
"Poof gone" Harry looked towards the door then leaned closer and whispered "Just like magic"
I thought this through. It's not the first situation where something odd or out of the ordinary happened to one of us. I've always had a habit of "finding" things that I'm missing or wanting; cookies, cake, books, the occasional spare change, and pretty hair bows. However finding isn't really the exact right term. That's the Dursley approved word. In reality whatever it is that I'm thinking about or really just appears out of thin air. There have also been instances where we are given Dudley's broken toys and the mend themselves while we play with them. Good as new. Harry on the other hand tends to go from one place to another but that really only happens when he's being bullied at school. I've seen it happen once or twice. We always say it's a lucky day, what a weird occasion, we have always rationalized it. This u is s the first time we've ever put a solid name it it. Magic. Here in this too small for anyone cupboard my twin just acknowledged us or really himself as magical.
" you've done it to Hope on that field trip to the aquarium!" Harry exclaimed. " I want a shark tooth so much! Sharks are just the coolest!" He used a girly accent. "Then out of nowhere you find one in the parking lot." This was stated matter of fact.
" I guess there has always been something strange about us." I stated. Neither confirming nor denying that he was right or wrong. With a huff I continued " so to elaborate while I was in the loo you made the glass poof disappear causing a snake to escape and Dudley to fall in?"
"Yes"
"How did the glass reappear to trap Dudley? If you wanted him trapped I wouldn't blame you. He was quite the arse today." I laughed
He smiled and said " Well him getting trapped just kind of happened I think maybe the snake did it."
"The snake trapped Dudley?"
"well maybe... he said thanks" Harry said as if it were the most normal thing.
" Harry I think you may be getting hunger delusions."
"You don't believe me..." The heartbroken look my brother gave me broke me.
I really did believed him about the glass disappearing and about it being a total accident. Harry is an honest and extremely kind person. Heck he doesn't even try to fight the people who bully him, he simply runs away or makes a sly comment. However I don't know how on board I could get with talking to snakes. I'm not really sure how far off magic and talking to snakes really is but it seemed significantly less likely than magic to me.
"No, no I do! We've just been in here for hours. My stomach is growling and I know I've heard yours twice now. I'm gonna check and see if the coast is clear."
I put my ear to the door and didn't hear anyone. Peaking through the tiny gold slats it seemed the hallway lights were off.
" I'm gonna go into the kitchen and grab whatever I can."
" let me go it's my fault we are locked up anyway. Your only guilty by association." Harry stated with a remorseful voice before I could get the door knob turned.
" oh please" I rolled my eyes. " if anything it would be better if I was caught and not you. After today it would be way worse on you. Besides I should have known better than to leave you in public by yourself for that long."
" you were in the loo"
" I was actually reading one of those information packets In seating area outside of the loo" I gave him my best smile as I slipped out of the cupboard and made my way to the kitchen.
I felt bad admitting that I wanted to read by myself for a bit. It's not that I don't want to be with my brother I do. I actually don't think I would ever be okay without him. Life here would be truly unbearable without him. However it's extremely rare to get any bit of alone time at the Dursley's. Even at school once a week I fake a stomach bug just to spend thirty minutes to an hour by myself in a dark room. Harry knew about this and never complained or said anything negative about me wanting a bit of alone time he called it "hopes girl time" that never stopped me from feeling slightly guilty.
Once in the kitchen I had to make the tough decision of what to grab. Chips and anything crunchy are out of the question. To loud. I found cold ravioli ( probably from the dinner we missed), a lot of left over salad, and bread. I took enough to feed us but not enough to there they would notice.
Closing the fridge door lightly I made my way back to the cupboard. " I pretty much hit the food lottery tonight" I said with a smile.
"Once again you find exactly what you want, you know when I go looking for food I get scraps but you manage to get us a whole meal."
"Must be magic" I said with a wink.
We ate in silence after that. I think we're both contemplating the whole magic joke and how far we are gonna take it, if the other was actually taking it seriously or not, and if that could be why the Dursley's hate us so much.
