Chapter 14: Foreboding

Stepping out of the office, followed by Rick, Carl and Mikey were relieved as they had finally finished giving their report on what happened and were free to go. They felt lighter, relieved, as if a great deal of pressure was finally off their shoulders. They had not said anything about themselves yet, especially since Brandon's actions towards them was fuelled purely by his bigoted assumptions about them, without even knowing the truth. In short, they felt that if they were open with their new relationship, it would colour their testimony. Even if they despised Brandon and felt he deserved the worst he could get, they wouldn't lie to inflict that. What happened was he had victimised them before they were in a relationship, so they had to present their case with that in mind.

'Besides, I'm not ready to tell dad yet...nor would Mikey feel ready I think.' He reminded himself.

Still he caught Mikey's eye and nodded, smiling. It was then Rick drew their attention.

"Okay boys, thanks for this." He told them with a reassuring smile. "As you know I can't get personally involved, I was here as a parent, not a deputy. But rest assured, they'll get onto this as soon as possible."

Carl nodded. "Thanks dad, we'll be fine now."

Mikey agreed. "Yeah, thanks."

"Alright then, take care." He told them.

Smiling and nodding Rick then went back to join the other officers who were getting ready to leave.

Taking a moment, Carl and Mikey looked to each other. Finally, Mikey broke the silence.

"So, Carl...now that we've got that off our shoulders, we're free, right?" He remarked.

"Yeah, that's true. We are." Carl agreed with a grin.

Mikey nodded. "So, we don't need to hide anymore, right? I mean, I'm not ready to tell our families and such. But...I think we should-"

"You want us to be open, really?" Carl asked, startled.

Mikey nodded, confirming it. Pleased with Mikey's confidence, Carl agreed.

"Alright then, shall we?"

"You bet." Mikey agreed.

With that, without fear of being seen, they linked hands and shared a soft kiss before they made their way towards their first classes of the day. As they walked they were both nervous, that much was certain, but they were strong in their conviction. They would not let anything stop them from being themselves and they knew that they were in love now, they had nothing to be ashamed of and would happily show that. Their only fears really were opening up to their parents but it was only due to their nervousness on how they would react, due to them of course still needing their families or they'd be stuck out on the streets. It was a tricky situation they knew, but they both mutually decided to cross that bridge when they came to it.

As they walked they were the centre of a few stares, double takes and some whispers, but nothing overtly negative. At least until they found themselves confronted by Anna's step-sister, Alyssa.

"Urgh, you've got to be kidding me." She growled, disgusted. "I swear, you boys are a disgrace."

Carl replied coolly. "Our relationship doesn't even affect you, so your opinion is irrelevant. Much like you, come to think of it."

"You much your mouth, scum." Alyssa spat. "You disgusting fags, acting as if you have a right to go around shoving your perversion in our faces. How dare you, no wonder Anna got so tainted by it."

Mikey had been about to protest her words, but that last part stopped him. "Wait, what, Anna-?"

Alyssa sneered. "What, deaf as well. It's thanks to you scum that Anna's turned out to be a...thing like you, even breaking up with that girl, as if it was an actual relationship."

"You need to learn how not to be a bitch, and a stupid one at that." Mikey said at last, fed up. "C'mon Carl, let's just ignore the trash."

Carl nodded in agreement and he and Mikey walked away, leaving a spluttering, flustered Alyssa behind, shocked at how they spoke about her.

As they made their way towards their next classes they spotted a rather harried looking Sophia up ahead.

"Sophia, hey." Mikey called out, getting her attention.

She turned and, seeing them, managed a strained smile. "Hey guys."

"Hey, so, um…" Carl began. "I don't know if you've heard yet but-"

Sophia shook her head. "I noticed guys, you're still holding hands and everything. I'm happy for you, really."

"Well, that's good." Carl agreed. "But listen, we might have a problem, Alyssa and I'm guessing the parents know about Anna."

Mikey nodded. "While insulting us as you can imagine, Alyssa told us she knew about Anna. Apparently she's split up with Tonya."

Sophia's eyes widened. "Uh oh, um, guys...that's not good at all."

Her fearful expression told them that something was wrong, very wrong.
