"We were visiting the Springfield Renaissance Faire. I was embarrassed because Dad ate eight different kinds of meat. Chief Wiggum set up a fake beast show. It was just a rabbit. I followed it into the forest. That where I found a Fortune teller's booth. Now I didn't believe in Fortune Telling but then the Fortune Teller told me the names of everyone in my family and what they were doing. So I sat down and listened. I asked about my first true love."
-Moaning Lisa, the Autobiography of President Lisa Simpson
"Hi Future Lisa Here. Yeah now what she told me was not entirely wrong but I have the benefit of Hindsight that I didn't have when I was 11. So I guess I should takeover. It was 2007. I was 23 years old and attending Yale(Thanks Bart). Well I decided to do some learning abroad so I went over to an Eastern University. I remember the University hd a statue of a Tree. In memory of a real tree no doubt. Anyway at University's where I met Hugo Parkfield. We fought over a book and argued for hours, and that's how we fell in love. We were both so passionate. I wrote back to mom and dad telling her about how I had a boyfriend. I stayed in England after graduating. Got to meet Hugh's parents. I stayed in touch with the family of course. It took awhile but in 2010. Hugh asked me to marry him and I said yes.
I called up mom and told her. She promised not to let Dad ruin the wedding. She promised while crossing her fingers, which i could see. I mean Facetime was brand new at the time but she made the same mistake with Zoom. I knew she wouldn't be able to keep her promise. Even if she did convince Dad not to handle it.
Anyway the rest of the family. Maggie was 23 in 2010. She was going off to College, but her real passion was Music. She'd never shut up about it. It annoyed the hell out of Dad because whenever he tried to talk she was practicing her music. Of course we all know where that would take her. Bart was 25. He'd divorced twice(Both times to Jenda and many more time in the future) and he was working on Construction before he was planning to go to Law School(and when he did become a Lawyer, he made plenty of Construction jabs in his commercials). Dad...well he always had different jobs but he had to break the news to Milhouse. He told me how he felt about me but I turned him down. I once told him I didn't think I'd ever get married(...Oops). Still we would patch things up down the line.
So it came time for Hugh to meet the family. I was afraid they'd embarrass me. They kinda did. Dad and Bart had the bright idea of waving the British flag on their front lawn, which was a bit much. I tried to talk Dad out of bringing Hugh to Moe's tavern, though since Moe had a chain going there was all these different versions of it like Uncle Moe's, the Nag and Mule, Flaming Moe's. They ended up going to the Nag and Mule. I talked Dad out of giving Hugh the tacky pig themed cuffs that Grandpa had worn on his wedding day and that Dad had worn on his wedding Day. He'd given them to Bart for his wedding with Jenda but that had fallen apart. I guess he hoped it would be different with Hughe. I assured him Bart would get married again, keeping the tradition for all the Simpson men. I apologized to Hugh for how my family acted he said it was fine, but he didn't seem fine.
For the wedding, I had to wear something old, something new, something borrowed, something Blue.
The white pearl necklace I always wore as a kid. That was something old.
Something new. My Wedding Dress.
Something borrowed. Hugh's mom gave me her antique Brooch.
Something Blue. I took a lock of mom's hair and tied it into part of the dress.
On the Day of the wedding, Dad met Hugh's parents and it went pretty well. Dad went to talk to me. He took my hands.
"Little Lisa. Lisa Simpson...You know I always felt you were the best thing my name ever got attached to...Since the time you learned to pin your own diapers. You've been smarter than me."
"Oh dad."
"no no let me finish...I just want you to know I'v always been proud of you...You're my greatest accomplishment and you did it all yourself...you helped me understand my own wife better and taught me to be a better person...But you're also my Daughter...And I don't think anyone could've had a better daughter than..."
"Dad you're babbling."
"See...you're still helping me."
That's when I noticed the Cufflinks. Dad was going to give them to Hugh. I thought of bringing them up and running to greet Hugh.
Instead I said nothing.
At the wedding Maggie got up to front to sing.
...And everything went off without a Hitch.
Now I know what you're thinking. That's not what happened. Hugh called the wedding off. He went back to England and I never saw him again. Even though I could've used my resources as President to find him. Eventually I marry Milhouse.
And in a way...you're right...that's not what happened.
But here's the thing. That's the version the Fortune Teller told. Specifically the version that she told an 11 year old me. A version which I remembered and memorized. And when she said there was nothing I could do to change it except act surprised. I started running through ways to change my fate. I had plenty of time and some hints about the future. I was a kid. I still had a concept that I had a true love and not that I'd date and break up with several people or I could get married and divorced more than once. There were absolutely things I could do in the 15 years before what she showed me happened. I knew the future. At least part of it. I told Bart. He had the Shining so he just read my mind and he was in on making go right what once went wrong.
So that's the moment I realized. I could change the future.
Yeah I know movies talked about how dangerous changing time is but the way I see it. It's only a possible future. it can still be changed.
Besides what's the worst messing with the future could change?
