Chapter 16: Changes

Sophia couldn't stop her hands from trembling; her mind just full of what she had seen. Shortly after finding Anna and trying to put pressure on the wounds, a teacher had arrived, initially to see to it that she was punished for attacking Tonya, but that changed upon them seeing Anna. They had called 911 and everything that happened after that was a blur to Sophia.

'All I know is, the doctors said she'd live, we just need to wait for her to wake up.' Sophia told herself. 'Oh and, for fighting in school I'm suspended, but given the extenuating circumstances it's only for the rest of this week.'

She looked up as the door opened and to her relief it was her mother.

"Sophia, honey, what on-?" Carol began, looking pale and startled.

Sophia stood and turned to her. "Mom, please. I'll tell you everything but I need your help, please...those, so called family members of hers are gonna show up any time and we can't let her stay with them. They're partly to blame for this."

Carol startled, eyes wide at what Sophia said.

"What, Sophia, that's a serious accusation, you-" She began to protest.

"Please, I need you to trust me, you'll see what I mean." Sophia said quickly. "But I need you to help me."

Carol bit her lip but finally nodded and listened as Sophia explained what had led to this moment, including the suspension.

Just as she finished they heard the approaching footsteps and Sophia tensed, knowing who it was and what to expect. Sure enough at that moment, the Bowen family entered, scowling and grumbling amongst themselves. Then they froze upon seeing the Peletier family there.

"What in the devil are you doing here!?" Mr. Bowen snapped.

Before Sophia even replied she saw her mother reach into her handbag, but she then focused on the family.

"I thought it was obvious, I'm here for Anna-"

Mr. Bowen snapped. "Don't mention her name, she doesn't deserve any such consideration."

Mrs. Bowen also spoke up. "You have no business here, we have come to sort this mess out. We can't let this continue."

"Meaning what?" Sophia growled.

"Meaning she needs to stop disgracing us with this behaviour." Alyssa whined. "Acting out, all that lesbian nonsense, trying to kill herself just for attention, it's pathetic."

"You're the pathetic one, you stuck up little-" Sophia snapped.

"Don't you dare talk to my daughter that way, you little witch." Mrs. Bowen screeched. "This is simply that little waste of space getting what she deserves, now perhaps she'll stop being a little-"

"Don't you dare finish that sentence!" Sophia yelled angrily.

All three of the Bowen family were startled by the outburst, not at all used to having anyone stand up to them.

Shaking her head Sophia glowered at them.

"This is your fault you know, all three of you, the way you treat her...like some sort of slave, abusing her." She remarked.

At once Mr. Bowen flared up. "How dare you, we are doing what we have a right to. We put a roof over her head, clothes on her back, gave her food. We have every right to expect her to pay us back. She needs to earn her place to stay with us."

"By doing every single chore all by herself, feeding herself, cooking, cleaning all while you shout at and belittle her?" Sophia snarked.

"She is being kept in her place, she is a dirty little worthless orphan who should count herself lucky to be with us. Instead of being this ungrateful little disgrace." Mrs. Bowen harshly added.

"The only disgrace here is you, your husband and your daughter!" Sophia yelled.

"How dare you, trash like you has no right to talk to us like that." Mrs. Bowen countered.

Sophia shook her head. "The only trash here is the three of you, all three of you monsters, just like Tonya. It's all your fault she's here!"

Before the Bowen family could respond the door to the ward opened and a doctor entered.

"Can we please keep the noise down." He said firmly.

All at once Mr. Bowen burst out. "I did not given permission for this...thug, to be here, I demand she leave at once."

The doctor sighed and turned to Sophia. "Miss, I'm afraid-"

"Hold on a moment." Carol said suddenly. "Don't you want to hear the whole story before making a decision?"

At once all eyes were on her.

She held up her phone and continued to talk.

"It's a good thing I recorded this entire conversation...since I'd hate for you to be responsible for this girl getting hurt again, doctor." She remarked.

The doctor narrowed his eyes. "Now, ma'am, my job is-"

Carol nodded. "Yes, yes, we know that, but we also notice that you seem to just listen to the family. Is it because they're rich and we're not, you're just being prejudiced."

"You-" The doctor spluttered.

"Or are you willing to hear the full story, as to why they're keeping an eighteen year old girl in their house as an adoptive dependent. Never giving her a chance to change her life for the better, to become her own person." Carol continued.

That caught the doctor's attention. "Wait, what exactly are you saying?"

"Not to mention this." Carol said.

With that, taking advantage of the stunned silence of the Bowen family, Carol played the recording, revealing the entire content of their conversation. It did not put the Bowen family in a good light, they were practically admitting to their mistreatment of Anna and what was basically modern day slavery. Hearing the whole thing, the doctor turned to the family, his eyes cold.

"So…"

The Bowen family were all red faced, flustered and stammering.

Until Mr. Bowen snapped. "Didn't you hear me, they don't have my permission to be here, remove them at once."

The doctor sighed and simply contacted security, to remove the Bowen family at once.
