Chapter 17: Hope

Anna could feel something soft and warm around her, her eyes were still closed but she could feel the sunlight streaming in through the window. Opening her eyes slowly, allowing them to adjust to the light she found herself in what was clearly a hospital room.

'What, I...how...I'm still alive?' She realized in dismay. 'No, I...I can't...why, I wanted to-'

"Anna."

She blinked, startled and turned her head. Her eyes widened at the sight of Sophia seated by the bed, eyes wide and hopeful.

"S-Sophia, what, why are you…?"

Sophia gently reached out to her, squeezing her hand. "Thank God, I was so worried."

Anna shook her head. "It was you wasn't it, you saved me. You brought me back to this, this-"

"Anna, please, listen to me. It's not going the way you think it is." Sophia explained. "Please, I can't stand the thought of losing you, what happened...it was horrible and you didn't deserve a bit of it. But please...you have to live, I promise, it'll get better."

"It can't possibly get better, Sophia, you saw it, I'm ruined, my family are gonna-" Anna sobbed.

Sophia's eyes narrowed. "Your so called family are no longer an issue. Mom and I exposed them for what they are and they'll more than likely be facing legal problems in the near future."

"Y-you, what?" Anna gasped, hardly daring to believe what she just heard.

Sophia nodded. "Yeah, they were here earlier and mom recorded them revealing what they really thought about you...then we simply played it to the doctor who came and he had security make them leave...mom's gone to talk to him and see what'll happen next."

Anna bit her lip, still unable to believe it.

Finally, shakily she found her voice again.

"So...my family, I...I'm…?" She asked.

Sophia nodded. "Yeah, you're free of them. Don't worry, mom's already thinking about what'll happen to you now, I believe that's what she's also talking about right now too."

Anna wasn't so sure, but she clung onto it, she needed all the hope she could get.

"But, at school...T-Tonya-" She then blurted out, her fears of Tonya clear.

"I, um...may have punched Tonya." Sophia admitted sheepishly. "But the message got across clearly and my reasons for doing so too."

Anna stared, wide-eyed at this. "You, you what?"

Sophia grimaced. "I know, right. I've been suspended until next week because of it. But that's nothing compared to the trouble Tonya is likely to get into. It's also been made clear to all those morons who gave you a hard time that they are gonna end up in serious trouble too, especially if they keep trying to harass you."

Anna gasped. "You, you really mean...no, this, this is too good to be true and-"

"I know Anna, it's not something that's gonna just disappear like that." Sophia said soothingly. "But you're not alone, you have Carl, Mikey, me...you have all your friends. We're all gonna be there for you. Yes, your strength has been worn down by this, so let us be that strength for you."

Anna smiled at that, a feeling of relief starting to fill her. She was beginning to regret the action she had taken, looking down at her bandaged wrists.

Looking back up at Sophia she pondered for a moment, before finally speaking.

"I just, I can't believe you did all this for me...it's…" She said, her voice barely above a whisper.

To her surprise, Sophia suddenly looked awkward, biting his lip, a blush creeping up her cheeks.

"Anna, I, um…" She began. "I have something I need to tell you. I should've probably told you sooner, a lot sooner."

Anna tensed at that, wondering what she meant. "Sophia?"

Taking a deep breath Sophia spoke. "The truth is, Anna, for a long time, I've had feelings for you, a crush on you. You were with Tonya so I didn't say anything, I thought you wouldn't be interested in me. You know, model material girl compared to nerdy tech girl. But the feelings never went away, I love you and I still do."

Anna stared in shock, taking in exactly what had just been said by Sophia, the girl who had saved her, the girl she had in fact had a crush on.

"You don't, you don't have to tell me anything yet, don't need to reply yet." Sophia said quickly, reassuringly. "I just, I wanted you to know the truth."

Before Anna could offer a reply, the door to the room opened and Carol stepped in.

"Oh, Anna, you're awake." She said with a wide smile. "That's a relief."

Anna swallowed nervously. "Um, yeah, Ms. Peletier, my...my family, they-"

"It's alright, dear." Carol explained. "It's all been explained and they're gone. Also, nobody else has any problem with it so...If you want, you're more than welcome to stay with me and Sophia, for as long as you need."

Sophia gasped at that while Anna smiled, again taking it in and, she noted, for the first time in a long time she was starting to feel hope again.
