Chapter 21: A New Day
With school over for the day, the group of four exited, chatting amongst themselves, each holding hands with their respective partner. Anna and Sophia were particularly excited, all down to their plans for that evening.
"So, you guys already arranged your first date?" Carl remarked with a smile.
Anna nodded. "Yeah, I know I'm looking forward to it. Right Sophia?"
Sophia, who had been lost in thought, but still smiling, quickly pulled herself together.
"Yeah, me too." She said. "I just...I'm just glad everything is finally looking up, after all the drama we've had to endure."
Mikey sighed at that. "Tell me about it. Still, what's important is we've overcome it and now we have a real chance at happiness."
They all paused for a while, still smiling, although none of them noticed that there was a car parked at the other side of the street from the school, the occupants watching them carefully, mainly the boys.
Oblivious, Carl then asked. "So, how's the play going?"
"Pretty good, we're back on track, Mikey's doing great as Prospero, we should've given you the role straight away." Sophie replied.
Mikey just shrugged. "Yeah well, anyway, Jessica's doing fine too, glad we got a new Ariel."
The others nodded, Tonya had not only been kicked out of the play, but also expelled and was facing criminal charges for what she had done to Anna. Not only that, but the Bowen family were notably more subdued without Anna there for them to push around, Alyssa wouldn't even come near her at school.
With their lives certainly changing for the better, they prepared to go their separate ways, the boys heading for their homes, the girls heading for the Peletier home. Just before they did however Carl paused, then grimaced.
"Ah shit, I forgot." He groaned. "I told mom I'd drop by the store and pick up some milk on the way home."
Mikey just smiled. "Don't worry about it, go ahead, just let me know when you get home, okay."
"Sure, thanks."
With that Carl headed off to the store and Mikey headed home by himself, the car that had been watching them slowly drove away from the scene. Heading home, Mikey continued to ponder on how things had gone lately.
'It's been hard, I remember being so scared, of telling Carl, my parents, of coming out...yet now, now things are better. Of course the Rose family are still kicking up a fuss, but when the police finally go and arrest Brandon, well, we'll see.' He thought to himself. 'Funny, but despite everything, Carl and I never really noticed how much we meant to each other, never actually realized what we felt, until Brandon did...that to us. So for all his bigoted hatred against us when he didn't actually have a reason to be, he's actually responsible for us getting together in a weird way.'
Mikey smiled wider at the irony of that, but quickly resumed focused on getting home, that was until a female voice spoke up.
"Excuse me a moment, please, we need to talk."
Mikey turned, curious, wondering what was going on.
Making his way back home, having got the milk from the store, Carl was currently on the phone to his dad.
"So, you're gonna be late home?" He asked, worried.
Rick sighed. "Yeah, sorry son. Could you let Lori know?"
Carl's reply was resigned. "Sure, I'll tell mom."
"It's nothing dangerous, don't worry." Rick explained. "Got a call from Ron."
That told Carl the whole story, for he knew his father was referring to Ron Anderson, a boy Carl knew from school and therefore knew his whole sordid family history.
"Oh, again...his dad?"
"Yeah." Rick confirmed. "We've just arrested him and Jessie and Ron are about to be interviewed to give their statements now."
"Okay." Carl said at last. "I'll tell mom, see you when you get home."
With that they hung up and Carl sighed; knowing full well what all this meant. As was usual with the Anderson family, Peter would get drunk, would abuse Ron and Jessie, he'd be arrested, statements would be made. The following day Jessie and Ron would be around at the Grimes house where Lori would give Jessie a shoulder to cry on, then Jessie and Ron would redact their statements and Peter would be released and the whole cycle would repeat again. Shaking his head, Carl entered his home to let his mother know what had just happened.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
