Chapter 25: Wrong Move
Carl bit his lip as he continued to look around town for any clues as to what might have happened to Mikey.
'Urgh, c'mon, there has to be something, anything.' He thought desperately. 'Mikey, where are you, what has happened to you...I wonder if…?'
He began to wonder, there was one place they hadn't looked properly at yet. There was a part of the journey home from school where it was relatively excluded, just before turning onto their street.
Carl wondered for a moment. 'Could it be...could that be where he disappeared from, it's...it's possible that if something bad did happen to him, if someone did something to him, that would be the place to do it…'
He admitted to himself that it was the most likely incident, but it was something that needed to be done carefully, in case something had happened and there was evidence there. So, reigning in his desperate desire to go and search, he instead hurried to where his father was searching.
"Dad, I just thought of something." He said quickly; getting his attention. "If anything happened to Mikey, I think I know a place that might have happened."
Rick raised an eyebrow. "Carl, are you sure?"
Carl sighed. "I have a suspicion, but I don't know for sure, but what do we have to lose?"
"Fair enough." Rick agreed. "Alright, I'll get a couple of other officers and we'll all go and look."
"Might have to split up to cover everything." Carl added.
Rick nodded and soon they quickly put things together.
Reaching the area Carl mentioned Rick nodded as he looked around.
"Alright, if something did happen here, it would be pretty easy to do it with no witnesses." Rick admitted. "We'll look around, spread out, cover as much ground as possible and be absolutely careful, we don't want to cause any disruption."
The two officers nodded, as did Carl who had insisted on coming along and searching. They split up and began their search, looking around the area. Carl bit his lip, taking a careful look around one area, somewhat off the beaten path that he knew Mikey used as a shortcut. He knew what he was looking for, anything relating to Mikey, or even signs of a struggle or anything else like that, but he wasn't sure if it would indeed be indicative of something happening.
'I have to focus, c'mon Carl, get with it.' He told himself firmly. 'You know something has happened, you just need to find it. You have to do this for Mikey, he's counting on you.'
He renewed his search with increased vigilance, despite the lack of any real proof Carl was certain that this wasn't just a plain old disappearance. He was sure something had happened to Mikey, he just needed to find proof. He that without it, his father and the rest of the police would not be able to look at it that way. It was still a missing person's case and evidence would be needed to escalate it.
It was at that moment that he heard footsteps approaching, confused he stood up and turned, his eyes widening in surprise when he found, of all people, Tammy Rose, approaching him.
"What do you want?" He snapped, not at all happy seeing her.
Tammy held up her hands, appeasingly. "Please, I'm only here to try and apologize."
"Apologize?"
"Yes, you know, the incident with my son at the pool." Tammy explained. "We've worked through it and we want to make amends, to fix all this. Brandon does too…"
Carl shook his head. "Well, maybe later, I'm busy."
He just wasn't in the mood to deal with this right now.
"Please-"
"I'm sorry but Mikey is missing." Carl shot back. "I have to deal with that right now, to try and find him, that is far more important right now.
Tammy actually glared at that, as if angry that he was reacting this way.
She shook her head. "I insist, you must listen to what my family and I have to say-"
"I just told you I'm not interested, I have to find Mikey." Carl snapped.
"That boy isn't an issue here, surely, I don't see why you're working so hard to look for someone like him, he's clearly just run away." Tammy grumbled.
"You clearly don't know Mikey, he'd never run away." Carl replied, before narrowing his eyes. "But you sure seem so confident in that. Why is that, did you or any of your family have anything to do with it?"
"What, how dare you, are you accusing me, my family-!?" Tammy spluttered.
Carl nodded. "You bet."
He did not expect what happened next.
An angered Tammy shockingly tried to lunge for him.
"What the hell?!" He gasped before yelping.
For at that moment Brandon appeared, grabbing Carl, covering his mouth with his hand as Tammy tried to grab Carl's legs as the boy struggled.
"C'mon, get him to the car!" Tammy ordered.
But then, at that moment, more shouts and Carl found himself on the ground. Picking himself up he saw Brandon and Tammy struggling and yelling as they were being restrained.
"Carl!" Rick cried, helping him up. "Are you alright?"
Carl nodded. "Yeah, they...they tried to freaking abduct me. They...they did this to Mikey too, didn't you!"
"That boy got what he deserved for being such a filthy degenerate!" Tammy screeched.
Brandon scoffed. "You deserve the same, we're gonna make sure you-!"
"The only place you're going is to jail, for attempted kidnapping." Rick said darkly.
"Think we might want to bring this one in too, caught him loitering around, stalking Carl." Shane suddenly said.
As he said that he had emerged with a cuffed Morton Rose.
"You can't stop us, you have no right to do this, we're doing nothing wrong!" Morton cried.
"You tried to kidnap my son!" Rick shot back.
Morton scoffed. "We were saving him, just like that other brat, you're all just too blind to see it!"
With what basically amounted to a round about confession the arrest was made and rights read as it was clear all three members of the Rose family were facing charges of attempted kidnapping of Carl Grimes and the actual kidnapping of Mikey Carr.
