Chapter 27: Desperate Hope
'This can't be happening, this just...can't be…' Carl thought frantically.
It had been a week, a whole week. Carl sat on the sofa at home, head bowed, elbows on his knees as his fingers gripped at his hair in frustration. He was a nervous wreck. It had been a whole week and still the Rose family were not talking, they'd been officially jailed now, something which had startled and then angered them. They had been that far deluded regarding their 'doing the right thing'. All the evidence gathered in the car merely proved the kidnapping, the exact location where Mikey was being held, the correction camp run by their friend, was still unknown.
"Carl, honey…" Lori said softly, approaching him.
He shook his head. "I can't mom, I just...Mikey's out there, something...terrible is happening to him, it's been a week, who knows if he's even-"
"Don't think like that." Lori told him, hugging him as best she could. "We'll find him, we just have to."
Carl sniffed. "I really hope so, mom. I just...can't stand the thought of my boyfriend being-"
He broke down, and Lori continued to comfort him, both of them wishing for some miracle to help them overcome this nightmare. They weren't the only ones suffering they knew. Much like Carl, Nicholas and Paula were struggling greatly, practically nervous wrecks too.
At the same time, seated together in Sophia's room, Anna bit her lip as she observed her girlfriend who was looking at her phone forlornly. She looked around, trying to figure something out, something to take Sophia's mind off things. Her gaze landed on Sophia's notebook, open at the most recent page.
"What's this?" She asked, trying to sound casual.
Sophia sighed. "It was...something I was supposed to discuss with Mikey for the play…"
Anna grimaced, that wasn't quite what she intended.
"Sorry, I just-"
Sophia looked up, a soft smile on her face. "I appreciate what you're trying to do, Anna. Really. But, I don't think anything would work here. It's so hard all those who were close to Mikey, knowing what's happened to him."
"I know, correction camp, I mean, it's fucked up." Anna replied, shaking her head. "Carl, Mr and Mrs. Carr, they're all so worked up, they're just…"
Sophia nodded sagely. "Tell me about it, still, it has brought one good thing about. It's shown how close the real members of the community are, look at how almost everyone is banding together to try and help them."
Anna had to admit, this was true and smiled at the thought. It was true, apart from her former family, Tonya and the Rose's, who were of course in jail now, everybody was trying to help Carl, Nicholas and Paula through this. Anna just hoped their torment would not go on much longer, after a week, they deserved some good news, surely.
At the station Rick sighed. He looked over all the documents before him, all notes from the case file, trying to find anything that stood out to him.
"Rick-"
Rick looked up sharply. "Shane, I can't stop right now. It's been a week, God knows what's happened to that poor boy. I need to-"
"Yes, I know Rick, which is why I've got news that you'll wanna hear." Shane replied quickly, trying to get his point across.
Rick sighed. "Alright, what is it?"
Shane smiled. "We finally managed to get full data from that GPS device within the Rose's car. We now know exactly where they went, what routes they took, where they stopped…"
"Tell me it has information from that day!?" Rick gasped, hope filling him.
"I thought you'd react that way." Shane remarked. "It does, we were able to pinpoint the location on a map. Now, we don't know for certain until we get there, but chances are high we've found the correction camp."
Rick stood up. "Then we have a chance, let's get ready."
"Let me handle that, don't you have some calls to make?" Shane offered.
Rick nodded, picking up his phone, he needed to let Paula and Nicholas know, as well as Carl. There was a chance, they were sure they had found Mikey at last, that this nightmare could finally pass, at least this part of it.
Carl grimaced, it had been hours since the phone call, but he did everything he could to keep his hopes up.
"They'll find them, this has to be it, Carl." Sophia said.
She was there along with Anna again, Nicholas and Paula sat opposite while Lori did her best to encourage them. They had been waiting together ever since getting the phone call. He just prayed that this would finally be the end of it.
"I...I know I just...I'm scared." He admitted.
"Scared?" Anna asked.
Paula spoke up. "I know what you mean Carl, I'm scared too...worried about what has happened to Mikey at that camp, what he'll be like when he returns?"
Carl nodded. "Yeah, e-exactly."
Finally, at that moment, the phone rang, startling them all, Carl was the nearest so he picked it up quickly.
"Hello?"
"Carl, it's dad." Rick said. "We got him, he's safe."
Carl's eyes widened. "Really, then he-"
"Now hold on, just listen." Rick said softly. "He's...he's safe, but he's in a bad way, he's in kind of a broken state...something horrible happened to him Carl."
Carl gasped. "I...I've gotta see…"
"I'm afraid not, it's too late. The hospital staff won't let anyone but his parents come see him right now." Rick explained. "He's in no state to talk to the police, so we'll have to wait."
Carl grimaced at this, horrified, wondering just what had been done to Mikey. But he took solace in the fact he was safe, he just needed to pass the word on to Nicholas and Paula and pray that they could finally recover from this nightmare, together.
