Chapter 30: New Life
Mikey smiled softly as he squeezed Carl's hand reassuringly, Carl gave a weak smile back, still looking so nervous. He knew what the problem was and was doing his best to help Carl get through it. They sat together in the waiting room, outside the delivery room at the hospital. It was Lori's due date and so they were here, waiting for the baby girl to be born. The two boys sat outside in the waiting room and weren't alone either, Sophia and Anna had joined them and sat across from them. They had all turned up to support Carl who was stressed, it was known after all that his own birth had been messy, he had to be delivered by C-section and Carl was afraid for his mother, worried that the same thing might happen again with this baby.
"Carl, your doing that thing again." Mikey remarked.
Carl started. "Huh, wha-?"
Mikey grinned. "You're overthinking things, worrying about stuff that you can't control. Listen, it's hard but you need to keep it together. It's not gonna help your mom if you lose control."
"I...I guess you're right." Carl said quietly.
Anna smiled. "You've got us okay, just remember we're all here for you."
Sophia nodded too. "Exactly. You've got us and we'll see you through this. Don't forget your mom made it through things with you, she's tough, she's got this, she can do it."
"You're right guys. Thanks." Carl replied with a smile.
He was still nervous, but he did his best, especially as he knew his father was likely worse, trying to support Lori inside the room. Carl grimaced as he heard his mother scream again and Mikey did his best to ease him.
Carl however wasn't the only one who would have issues here. To try and keep his mind off the concerns he was having, he looked over at Mikey.
'He, he looks okay, but, is he really. I mean…' He wondered. "Mikey, are you alright, I mean. I know hospitals are still kinda…"
Mikey smiled, knowing the girls were also looking at him anxiously.
Clearing his throat he spoke up. "I'm good, really. Thanks. I know hospitals are still kinda hard for me, after what I went through, after the last time I was here. But I'm managing, I'll be good."
Carl moved closer. "Well, okay, if you're sure. But if you have any problems, I'm right here."
"I'm supposed to be helping you." Mikey laughed.
Sophia shook her head. "You guys, honestly, it's obvious you both are helping each other, so stop trying to one up each other like this and just be happy you've got each other."
They all laughed softly before Carl looked over at Mikey with a soft look in his eyes.
"Trust me, we are happier than ever."
Mikey agreed as the two shared a soft kiss. In the meantime, Anna rested her head on Sophia's shoulder and Sophia wrapped her arm around Anna's shoulder, the two couples taking a moment to be content and thankful for what they had after all the drastic things they went through, now they were ready for the next stage of their lives, to welcome a new one to the world.
Carl admittedly lost track of time, but he was sure they had been at the hospital for a good number of hours. He was finally jolted from everything, bringing himself back into the present by the sound of an infant girls cries. He looked at the others, they shared his same hopeful expression, then finally, Rick emerged from the room.
"Dad?"
Rick smiled. "She did it, baby Judith is here, c'mon."
Carl's eyes widened in delight and made his way inside, the others following and soon they were all in the delivery room, Carl stood next to his dad by the bed. His mother was exhausted, but smiling joyfully, cradling the blanket wrapped bundle in her arms. She moved so Carl could see the baby girl, a small fuzz of dark hair on her head.
"Aww, she's...she's perfect." Carl whispered with an awed smile.
Lori laughed softly. "Yes, she is...do you want to hold her."
Carl swallowed but nodded. "S-Sure."
He was nervous but he knew everybody was here and they would be helping him. Reassured he gently cradled the baby girl, smiling.
"Welcome to the family Judith."
