The Air Force has ensured it's a closed court, partially in respect for the late General Hua and partially to protect themselves.

Shan's lawyers have already made a very generous offer to settle out of court, but Mulan's determined not to settle. For every victim that's shamed and intimidated out of pursuing their own rights, she feels she can be a small but firm voice.

It's over quickly. Shan's lost his career. He'll do two years for felony assault. He's surprisingly calm about it.

'I didn't mean to hit you,' he says. 'I was angry and confused.'

Mulan looks at him in his orange jumpsuit. 'If you didn't mean to do it, you wouldn't have.'
