Mulan crawls over Shang's chest while he's still sleeping. She's fascinated by all his hard lines and thick veins. She loves how secure she feels in his arms. She'd felt like that with Shan once, but then he came home from his second tour, and he was like an unpinned grenade. She'd thought about breaking up with him then, but it felt cruel. She'd been under no illusions of saving him. She'd just been waiting for the right moment to end things.

Even so, the security she felt with Shang Li was different. He was solid and warm.
