Abbey relaxed in her suite in the Hilton waiting on Zoey's arrival. She had already unpacked so she was just enjoying the quiet.
Her lead agent had already gone over the tentative schedule for the next couple of days so he could start the preliminary review of security. But the final schedule would have to wait until Zoey arrived and then the two of them would decide the places they wanted to go to. Abbey already knew that Harrods department store was on her list as well as the National Portrait Gallery and of course, Wimbledon. But Zoey hadn't made up her mind if she wanted to see the men or women's sets. Maybe both. It all depended on who was playing. They were guaranteed box seats, or if they desired, they could take one of the air-conditioned boxes. Abbey hoped Zoey would pick air-conditioning as Wimbledon in late June was noted for the heat, but this trip was as much for her daughter as it was for her. So, Marks knew he had to flexible with the daily schedule.
She had visited many places in and around London during the many trips she and Jed had made over the years, including the years that they had lived here while he had been in school. But it would be a different experience to share it with her youngest daughter. It would put a new spin on it and she was looking forward to it.
The phone rang. Since no one was to know she was here, she assumed it was Jed calling.
"Hi, there. Lonely already?"
"Mrs. Bartlet, I wanted to welcome you to London." That voice was definitely not Jed's.
"Excuse me. May I ask who this is?"
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Bartlet. I should have introduced myself. I'm Ambassador Lader, Philip Lader. I wanted to welcome you to London, and to say if you ever need anything during your visit to not hesitate to directly contact me."
"Ambassador, thank you very much. I was caught off guard because this visit was supposed to kept under wraps. I didn't know you had been told about it and when the phone rang, I thought it was my husband."
"Yes, Ma'am. I understand. The State Department sent me a confidential notification of you and your daughter's visit, and I assure you that no one else knows of your visit. I only wanted to welcome you and let you know I'm privately available should you need any assistance."
"Thank you, Ambassador. Please keep this private. We are trying to fly under the radar as much as possible, although I'm sure after the first public outing, the cat will be out the bag, so to speak. Have a good day. Good bye."
"Good bye. Enjoy London." The line went dead. Abbey shook her head. She knew keeping the visit private was going to be tough, but to have it outed within hours of her arrival, showed just how tough it was going to be.
She picked up a book, and looked at her watch. It was already 5:15. Zoey should be arriving soon. Her commercial flight was to arrive at 4 and the drive into town shouldn't take very long.
Right then, Abbey heard the door to the suite open and the words "Hi, Mom!"
Abbey put her book down, stood, and hugged her daughter. "I knew you should be here any minute. Have any trouble?"
Zoey smiled and laughed. "Why should I? Daddy brought half the seats in First Class so there really wasn't any way I could get into trouble. And because my two agents didn't let anyone except the flight attendants get anywhere near me, there was no one to talk with."
"That was for your safety, Zoey. You agreed to the terms when we planned the trip."
"I know, but it made the trip so boring. The agents kept saying they were on duty so they wouldn't play any games with me or even talk with me so it was a boring flight. I'm glad I'm here now."
"I'm glad you're here too." She gave her daughter a kiss on the forehead. "Are you hungry? I waited to order dinner until you got here."
"Starving. Let's see what's on the menu and then I'll go unpack."
"That sounds great."
