Leo's phone rang. "Yes?"
"It's Charlie. You wanted to speak with me, Mr. McGarry."
"Yeah. What's on the President's schedule the rest of the day?"
"There's a bill signing in an hour and then a photo op with a group of AARP voters at 2. At 3 he's supposed to meet with the Saudi ambassador and then at 4 the Russian ambassador. Of course, that goes out the window if they need him downstairs. Why are you asking me? You have a copy of his schedule."
"I know. See if you can push back the bill signing an hour and get Josh or Toby to deal with the voters, reschedule the ambassadors, but for God's sake don't tell him you're doing it."
"You want to tell me why? You know he's going to ask."
"Charlie, I can't tell you right now, but you'll know soon enough. And you will need to make plans to stay late tonight. Zoey will need you when she gets back tonight."
"Mr. McGarry, the First Lady and Zoey aren't due back until tomorrow."
"Charlie, there's been a change in plans. I can't go into it right now, but you will know very soon. Please just stick around. I'm going to need you to staff the President and then Zoey when she arrives. Trust me."
"Yes, sir. I trust you and I'll make arrangements."
"Thanks, Charlie. The President and Zoey are lucky to have you. Goodbye."
"Goodbye, Mr. McGarry."
Leo hung up. "Ron, I think we need to tell the President now. I don't want anyone else to get to him before we do. I'll talk to the others in a few minutes. Come on. You're going with me."
"Of course."
Leo stood. "Margaret!"
Margaret stuck her head in the door. "Yes?"
"Ron and I are going into the Oval to talk with the President. The other phone calls have to wait. When I get out, I want to talk to the Senior Staff. And tell Hackett to grab his bag now and wait in this office. I might need him sooner than I thought I would."
Confused, Margaret looked at him, but followed each request. Something big was happening, but she would be told when it was time. In the meantime, she went back to her desk to do what she was asked.
After knocking, and hearing "Come in", Leo and Ron entered the Oval. Jed was reading and looked up expecting to only see Leo. Instead, he saw both men.
"Leo, what's going on? Ron, is there something going on outside?"
"Mr. President," Leo started. "Why don't you come over here and sit on the sofa? Ron and I need to talk with you a minute."
Jed stood and walked around the big mahogany desk toward the two settees. Picking the one on the right, he sat down as requested and stared at the two men, who sat down opposite him.
"Leo, what is it? You're scaring me."
"Mr. President," Ron started. "I'm sorry to say, but there's been a problem in London."
Before Ron could say anything else, Jed stood. "WHAT? Is it Zoey? Abbey? Tell me, man. Are they hurt? Was it some kind of traffic accident? What the hell has happened?"
Leo stood and put his hands on his best friend's shoulders. "Jed, please sit down. Let Ron explain it. Give him a chance, please."
Jed looked at Leo, his eyes wide with fear. Gradually, he allowed his knees to bend and he resumed sitting on the settee. Leo released his hold and sat back down next to Ron.
"Go ahead, Ron."
"Mr. President, Zoey is fine. She's with her agents at the hotel."
"Ron, you're not including Abbey. Why not? What has happened to my wife?"
"Mr. President, we don't know. One minute she was in the bathroom at Wimbledon and the next minute she had disappeared."
During the next sixty seconds one could heard a pin drop in the Office of the President of the United States. The only sound registering was the tick-tock of the grandfather clock in the corner.
Both Ron and Leo were waiting for the President's response. But it never came. Instead, his eyes rolled to the back of his head and his body fell backwards against the back of settee.
"Get Hackett!" Leo yelled to Ron as he jumped up to sit beside his friend. His hand instantly checked for a pulse, which gratefully he felt, so he just waited until medical help arrived. Hackett had just arrived in Leo's office and quickly moved to the President's side. Also checking for a pulse, and satisfied by what he felt, Hackett reached into his bag and pulled out the smelling salts. He waved them under the President's nose and instantly got the intended response.
Jed shook his head, opened his eyes and sat up, noting there was another person now in the room.
"Hi, Doc" Jed said, smiling weakly.
"Hello, Mr. President. Let me get your blood pressure. Just stay still for a minute."
Jed waited patiently, knowing he could do little else.
"175 over 90. Not good, but not too bad either." Looking at Leo and Ron, Hackett asked the only question he had. "Why did the President faint?"
Leo answered this time. "Well, you might as well know. Everyone will know very soon. The First Lady was abducted from Wimbledon today and we had to tell the President."
"Well, that kind of news could certainly cause a reaction like the one he just had."
"Thank you, Doc," Jed smiled. "Why don't you wait in Leo's office? I think they have more to tell me, don't you?"
Both men nodded their heads.
Hackett stood and grabbed his bag. "I'll be close. You know you have high blood pressure, so please try to be careful."
"I will. Thanks." Jed waited until the door between the two offices were closed again and then faced the two men. "Okay, tell me more. Any clues? Any idea if she was harmed in any way during the abduction? I have to know, Ron. Please don't sugarcoat it. I have to know for my mental wellbeing. You both understand that, don't you?"
Ron answered, "Yes, Sir. The only clue was a cloth left behind saturated with chloroform. That's all. That one clue came from the last time I spoke with Scotland Yard, who's investigating the bathroom where the abduction took place. There's no evidence of blood or hair or anything to indicate a struggle. I'm guessing whoever it was came up behind her, forced the cloth on her face, and it didn't take but seconds before she became unconscious. She had been complaining of overheating earlier and was in the bathroom to cool off."
"Ron, where the HELL was her agent?"
"Sir, I asked him that question myself. He broke protocol, Sir. She asked him to get a bottle of cold water and insisted that she would be fine by herself in the bathroom. The concession stand was within visual range of the only entrance/exit of the bathroom so he thought it was okay to get her some water."
"How did they get her out of the bathroom if it was the only exit?"
"When the agent went in to find her, the window to the outside of the arena was open and the First Lady could have been easily passed through that opening to waiting individuals outside."
"Have there been any communications or ransom messages since she was taken?"
"No, Sir. None at all. It occurred," Ron looked at his watch, "just over 90 minutes ago."
Jed nodded. "How do you plan to get Zoey back here?"
"We're working on it. Mr. President," Leo responded. "She's secure right now, but Ron would feel much better if she was here at the Residence."
"So would I."
"Of course, Sir. She would like to talk with you."
"I'll call her immediately after this."
"Mr. President, you should go ahead with the bill signing, but take no questions from the press, I've taken the liberty of either canceling the rest of your appointments or staffing them out to your Senior Staff. I also think you should call the Security Council together and get them working their sources to see what they're hearing. We don't know what country is involved in this and for what reason. The more we can eliminate the better." Leo paused to see what the reaction from the President would be.
"I agree. Have Nancy and Fritz start working on gathering information and after I talk with Zoey and do the bill signing, I'll meet with them in the Situation Room. And let me know immediately when you have firm plans to bring Zoey home safely. I will also call the others and let them know that we know nothing about their mother." Jed paused, gathering his thoughts for the next statement. Finally, he was able to put his emotions aside enough to speak.
"Leo, Ron, find her. Find her alive. Find her before whoever took her damages her beyond repair. She is my heart, my soul as I'm sure you know. And I cannot be without her. Bring her back to me and to her family. Bring her back before she is lost to us forever. That's all."
