Chapter 1
Alfreda Swan was riding on the airplane to Washington, Folks. A wealthy orphan heiress is now under the custody of her uncle, Charlie Swan.
They died in the shipwrecked as she was the lone survivor and her old nanny, Palma Greens, on the life raft.
The reports and police deduced that it was an engine accident that blew out as the storm had hit them.
It wasn't very nice. It was a nightmare that Alfreda wished that she could wake up and sigh in relief that it was all a dream.
They sympathized with her to downright believe that she had done this. Alfreda wished that they stop harassing her and suddenly died or rather animal attacks. They all wondered if she was cursed or someone did not want her to suffer.
She was glad whatever karma did that killed those insensitive bastards.
She had begun having delirious dreams, and doctors proscribed her with sleeping pills or anxiety ones.
Alfreda couldn't tell if she was dreaming or awake.
And burn marks on her arms made her wear long sleeves and avoid any doctors speculating on hurting herself.
'I could have sworn that I never put my arms on any fires.' She thought furiously. She is not crazy.
Feeling airplane lowered to the ground and saw how cold it was outside.
Alfreda got out and grabbed her cage carrier for her calico Japanese Bobtail cat. Waiting on her other luggage to bring with her.
Alfreda went to her checking points before reaching her destinations to find her uncle.
She saw her uncle holding a sign for her name.
"Hey, I'm your uncle, Charlie." Charlie gave her a small smile. Alfreda gave him a grimacing smile in return.
Charlie understands that his brother and sister-in-law are now gone, and all he has left of them is his niece. Her old nanny, Palma, told him that his niece is having a hard time sleep and goes through what doctors believe is PSTD. Suffering through episodes, not once had Alfreda noticed her burn marks or hurt herself, and it was like she didn't have control over her body.
He will have to be extra watchful of her and take things slow.
"Come on, kid." Charlie went to help lift her luggage; Alfreda said nothing and nodded. They went to his truck and drove away from the airplane.
They drove quiet except for her pet cat, meowing and paws out to reach for something.
Now they need to head home, which he could tell that Bella has forgotten that her cousin is coming to live with them.
'No doubt another hanging out with Edward.' Charlie still didn't trust the boy. I mean, what father does.
"Home sweet home," He said to his niece as Alfreda quietly opened the door and let herself out first, then her backpack, her cage carrier with a very eager cat who wanted to come out already. Charlie went to get her luggage from the back.
He went to open the door and saw his niece walk in slowly, looking around his place. He did not doubt that his niece understood that this was now the reminder of her reality of being an orphan.
"Come, I had the room ready for ya." He walked up the stairs watches his niece sort of speed walking to catch up to him.
They came to the second room that looked like he was in the middle of fixing it up but ran out of time to finish it.
It looked like he was painting the room royal purple, and some pain buckets were still closed or used. It only has a big bed with dark blue sheets and a blanket. And a desk big enough for her computer and other things.
It is pretty much space since Charlie is not sure what stuff his niece wanted, but he hopes that she can rebuild something in her life.
"I know it's not much, but I am sure that you will fill up this room with your things once you settle down." Charlie put her luggage down.
Alfreda answered, "It's fine." In all honesty, it felt like a second chance to rebuild her life.
She bends to open her carrier and let her cat out. Her calico color cat meowed and slowly sniffed around the room. Her pet collar had a bell attached to it and her tag named "Janie."
Charlie stands there and watches his niece saunter to look at her room.
"Um…I will let you go for now. As I will get dinner ready." Charlie nodded as he was about to get ready. However, he was stopped by hearing his niece say,
"If you don't mind, I would like to decorate my room a bit. To design my walls."
Charlie looked back and her suggestions.
That is a reasonable effort.
"Sure, kid." He gave her a brief smile and left to prepare dinner.
For a couple of hours, his niece is undoubtedly preparing her clothes in the closets and finding a place to place her cat.
Hearing a car being driven up to his house, he had a guess today. Billy Black or Jacob.
Please tell him at least those two, instead of…
"I'm home," Bella announced herself. Charlie signs, but he can't blame her for being a teenager with a boyfriend.
"In the kitchen!"
Bella came with Edward Cullens.
Of course, she would invite him in.
"Bella, where had you been?" He questioned his daughter.
Bella sighed silently and said, "Dad, I was with Edward."
"I mean, do you remember what was today is supposed to be about?" Charlie corrected his daughter. He knows that it is typical for teenagers, but that is no excuse to bail over family.
"Um," Bella tried to answer him, but Charlie continued, "I know you are a teenager and have a boyfriend, but you forget that you had family here that needs you. I need you."
"I'm sorry."
"Your cousin is here. She will be living with us as I am now her legal guardian. She will receive her parents' property and their money until she is 18." Charlie told Bella.
"Wait, what happened to her parents?" Bella questioned Charlie over her cousin having wealth and being under his roof.
"You remember, Alfreda." Bella briefly remembers one Alfreda who laughed and loves making messy paints on her finger paintings.
"Her parents had drowned or rather shipwrecked in a boating trip. Only Alfreda and her Nanny, Palma, had survived." Charlie cooks up the steaks and mixes the vegetables. Hopefully, to get some weight in his niece.
"Try and be patient with your cousin. She is having a hard time accepting that her parents are gone."
Bella nodded.
Edward had heard her cousin's thoughts as she was coming down the stairs. Alfreda is beautiful by good human standards, and even wearing plain clothes, she still grabs anyone's attention.
"Is it ready?" Alfreda questioned her uncle.
Charlie looked at his niece, "Almost."
"Hey, I'm Bella, and this is my boyfriend, Edward." Bella introduced herself shyly. Probably feeling guilty about not seeing her cousin at all today.
Alfred looked at Bella and Edward. She is not comfortable with him around. Bella, she knows, is her cousin, but others are still weary for her to meet.
Edward gave her an understanding look. He heard her thoughts and knew that Alfreda had a hard time with new people around. It upsets him to see that she was harassed by people who think she is guilty of her parents' death.
"Hi," Alfreda awkwardly said to Edward.
Jingle, jingle. The sound of a small bell and chains clashed as steps followed.
Janie, the cat, meowed and came downstairs. Bella looked surprised that Charlie allowed a cat to live here.
"You…There's a cat?" Bella questioned Charlie and Alfreda.
"I did not have the heart to give up my precious pet," Alfreda told Bella.
Janie purred and rubbed her body to her legs.
Charlie coughed a bit. "Well, steaks are ready, so I am sure you can feed her cat, Alfreda."
She nodded and walked to the kitchen.
Janie sat down outside of the kitchen. Alfreda trained her cat to avoid accidents or snacking on their food.
Bella followed in the kitchen; Edward was about to follow until…
Hissss~ Janie hissed at Edward. Janie sensed what Edward was.
"Whoa," Alfreda commented on her cat. In all her life, Janie never hissed at anyone before, and in fact, her cat is the niceties one when it comes to strangers.
Edward doesn't have to be a mind reader to know that cat doesn't like his presence. Animals know what is not normal.
"That's okay. I gotta go back to my folks' home anyway." Edward excused himself, and Bella eagerly followed him, "I'll go with you to the car."
The couple left as Charlie and Alfreda looked back at the cat. Janie stopped hissing and unhinged her back as she saw that the dangerous animal was gone.
"Does your uh cat have any problems?"
"No," She denied that. "Believe it or not, she loves having other people for attention or felt like teasing them, but never hissed at anyone in the past." She went to pick Janie up and cuddle her pet.
"Maybe Janie is new to the environment. After all, city life is different from small-town ones." Alfreda petted her, now a calm cat.
"Huh," Charlie shrugged. Well, animals can get stressed or fearful when it comes to different worlds.
He wouldn't be worried about it.
Alfreda made her cat food in the bowl with water as she went to get her food.
Grabbing a plate, and ate the steak along with mixed steamed vegetables that she had forced herself to eat since she was taught not to waste her food.
It has been a few minutes as Alfreda wonders what is Bella is doing with Edward out there?
Her question was unfounded because she opened the door again.
Oh, looked, Bella came back.
Bella went to get her plate and started eating steak.
Alfreda is quiet as she is unsure if she should start talking or wait.
"So," Charlie started, "How was your day, Bella?"
"Um…It's good." Bella answered.
"I hope you are starting to consider colleges soon. As well, no doubt Alfreda, you are still in school too."
Alfreda hesitated but answered, "I had schooling before online classes that I am taking right now."
Her uncle paused for a moment but decided to question her.
"So, no public school then. Shame, I'm sure you could make social life or be with other people." It is not that Charlie is against that, but he thought Alfreda could go and meet people if she wanted.
"No," His niece replied.
Alfreda doesn't want to meet other people. She fears that they will know of her and what terrible stories those people made up.
"Well, I'm sure you will take a chance if you want to go to La Push. I could ask Jacob to introduce you to others." Charlie said to his niece which Bella looked up and watched her reaction.
"We'll see." It is not a no or yes answer, but good enough for Charlie, meaning that once she meets Billy and Jacob, she will go begging to go with them.
So, this will take time for her, but not for long.
On the new moon, Bella's eighteenth birthday is when all things had changed from the following days.
Reviews are welcome.
In the next Chapter, see more of these bad dreams. Bella's worst birthday ever and depression. Alfreda took her first step outside, where she met Sam Uly.
