"You caught her, you have to take care of her," Reese had said when they locked Root in the cage in the library. Shaw rolled her eyes.
"She's not a dog, Reese," Shaw pointed out. "Unfortunately," Shaw added, patting Bear. Still, she waited until Root regained consciousness to leave her alone with Finch.
Finch eyed Root warily, but she just sighed and crossed her arms. Waiting for… something. Bear watched her with interest.
"It's very Scooby Gang of you," Root said to Finch, who looked at her, puzzled.
"You mean the original series, the movies, the remake with the weird space-dog, or the Buffy gang?" Shaw asked, walking in with a big paper bag, Bear getting to his feet and trotting over to her. Shaw patted him absently, and although Finch watched carefully he was unable to find any trace of Shaw handing him the bone he found under his desk a few minutes later. Shaw put a sack of food from the local sandwich place on Finch's desk. "Lock me in there with her, would you?" Shaw asked, and Finch got painfully to his feet, unlocked the door to the cage and reluctantly locked it behind Shaw.
"Buffy, obvs," Root, said, flicking her hair. "Hey, you."
Shaw put a pile of clothes on the table in front of Root. Root riffled through them absently, looked through the bag as well. Some sanitary products. Shaw reddened when Root looked at her.
"They're all my size," Root said, surprised. "You must have a good eye. Or you must be very… observant." Root looked up with a smirk and Shaw rolled her eyes. "How long are you planning to keep me if I need a change of clothes?"
"If he's Giles, who am I?" Shaw deflected. "And don't say Cordelia," she added. Root eyed Shaw for a moment, looked away. Root didn't answer, so Shaw let it drop. "I was always more a fan of that Angel spinoff anyway," Shaw said casually as she put the second bag on the table, sat in front of Root. "Now, I don't think I hit you hard enough to do you any damage, but let me have a look." Shaw grasped Root's chin, turned her head, felt the lump, looked into her eyes to check her pupils. Root watched her carefully.
"Playing doctor is a good look on you," Root purred, and Shaw pulled her hand away as if burned. Shaw took out a wrapped sandwich with an 'S' on the packet, handed it to Root. Root unwrapped it as Shaw took a drink from a soda. Root took a bite, then opened the sandwich. It was covered in peppers, which Root peeled off from the bread. Shaw held her hand out, and Root placed them there, flinching when Shaw downed the handful quickly, chewing with apparent pleasure.
"Must have given you mine by mistake," Shaw mumbled around the mouthful. Root took the drink and took a sip. "That was mine too," Shaw added, scowling as she swallowed. Root just took a bite out of her sandwich and smiled up at Shaw. Shaw watched her eat, watched Finch unwrap his own sandwich.
"It's called an indirect kiss," Root said as Shaw took another sip of her drink to ward off her hunger. Shaw looked down at the straw and rolled her eyes.
"Take it," Shaw said, shoving it towards Root across the table and standing up. Root stood up just as quickly, pulled Shaw to her in one quick motion that had Finch rushing to the door of the cage, but Root just looked down at Shaw for a moment before bringing her lips to Shaw's.
Shaw froze for a moment, and Root pulled away a little. Finch looked away, hand on the lock, blushing furiously.
"Very hot," Root said, letting go of Shaw and sitting back down, taking another sip. "And totally worth it."
Shaw stormed out of the cage, and Finch locked it quickly behind her.
"I… I petitioned the supreme court," Finch said. "A number of times, over the years." He turned back to his computer as though he had said something that made sense. Shaw rolled her eyes again and ate the second sandwich whose package had been marked with an 'S', carefully avoiding any and all eye contact.
Notes:
For those who don't know, Amy Acker appears in:
Buffy
Scooby Doo (2013)
Angel
In Buffy, they keep a werewolf in a cage in the library and the opportunity was there, especially since Amy's character in Scooby Doo was a space doggo.
