*Chapter 4: A Matter of Blood*

.

*Ichigo Kurosaki*

He scratched his chest where he was stabbed, traces of icy cold tingling beneath the skin causing its irritation. There wasn't a mark left behind, the gash caused by the rapier closing up as soon as the weapon had disappeared. Although he knew he was stabbed, there were no apparent physical signs of such a mortal injury. He should be dead. His father was a doctor, and he grew up helping around the clinic. He should have died. And yet, he was alive.

The cold lingering beneath the surface of his sternum was remnants of something that was unlike anything he had ever seen or felt before—not that he had a lot to go on. Granted, he was a substitute soul reaper now, but even after borrowing Rukia's powers and facing down dozens of hollows, he had never seen anything quite like that. Of course, he had gotten her powers after she had stabbed him through the chest, much like Neil had done with that rapier, but he had never felt such a bone-deep chill seeping into his frame like he did now.

He was in class and distracted beyond his capacity to pay attention to the teacher, doing his best not to fall asleep. The night before had been hectic. First, dealing with that Menos Grande and then the arrival of people definitely not from around here. And Hat and Clog's insistence that they all leave for the evening without any answers didn't help him to get sleep either. But besides being tired, he hadn't noticed anything weird going on with him—if you didn't count the cold feeling in his chest that he was shrugging off as the perfect response to being stabbed. Which apparently, he was supposed to report.

.

*Flashback*

"Okay, Hat and Clogs. What the hell just happened?" Ichigo demanded as he stumbled to his feet, a faint pins and needles feeling shuddering through his legs as they regained adequate blood flow. A small rivulet of blood raced down his chest, a remnant of the attack, but wiping it away revealed nothing that would have caused such a wound. His chest was unmarred with nothing to hint that he had just been stabbed through the heart. The orange-haired teen frowned. This was bizarre.

At least, when Rukia stabbed me, it was more like her zanpakuto entering my body and becoming my own. Not striking to harm me. I guess I didn't have a stab wound then, either.

"You were stabbed with a Weapon not unlike a zanpakuto that was known for changing people into vampires. I would recommend coming to me immediately if you notice the desire to drink blood," Kisuke responded with a straight face. Ichigo glanced at him worriedly, missing the glint of amusement in the shopkeeper's gray orbs. If Urahara hadn't had such a serious expression—minus the eyes, which he missed—the teen might have dismissed what he said.

"What? Urahara!" Rukia shouted angrily, her outrage masking Ichigo's slight panic at the situation. Become a vampire? Oh, hell no! The midget looked pissed, advancing on Hat and Clogs with a raised fist promising extreme pain. It was a look she had leveled on him once or twice in the past and he vowed to never make her that furious ever again. His shins were still aching from the last time he pushed her too far. The blonde wisely shrunk away form her with a more normal expression flitting across his face as he flipped the fan open in front of him again, maintaining a submissive posture to avoid Rukia striking him.

"I wouldn't worry about it too much. The Weapon was never designed for souls such as ours. Ichigo has no Magic Core and, so, he shouldn't change. However, just to be on the safe side, I would suggest that you come back in a few days for me to run a few tests—sooner if you notice anything strange," Kisuke remarking placatingly, his hands raised to protect his face until Rukia slowly and obviously reluctantly lowered her arm. With her threat eliminated for the time being, he added, "For now, you should go home. It is already well into the evening and you both have school tomorrow."

"Fine, but when we come back, you better give us some answers," Ichigo demanded even as he relented in his pursuit for answers. The shopkeeper had only barely relaxed the tension tightening his body, but the blonde was moving away, back into the depths of the store where he had not gone previously.

"Of course! Of course!" Hat and Clogs called over his shoulder as he left them to see themselves out.

*End Flashback*

.

Ichigo wasn't sure if he should consider the occasional burst of cold in his chest as 'something strange' or not, but he would keep an eye on it. Otherwise, everything felt fine. Better than fine. Reflexes were as they should be, soul form and physical body responding like they normally did. Despite having been stabbed in the chest, his body felt like nothing had happened. Maybe nothing had. He was hoping that was the case. He didn't want to become a mythical bloodsucking creature of the night if he didn't have to.

He glanced at Uryu when the archer walked in in the middle of third period. The archer's hands were covered in bandages, probably wrapping the injuries he had sustained during their fight against the hollows. If he remembered right, the quincy's fingers were bleeding near the end.

"Uryu! What in the world happened to you?" their instructor exclaimed in dismay, looking up at the tardy teen in shock and dismay.

"I…um…fell down the stairs," Uryu responded. Ichigo could hear the disbelief radiate throughout the classroom as the other students began debating in hushed tones on what really happened to him. Even the teacher didn't seem like she believed him, eyeing him incredulously before turning back to the text in her hand with a sigh.

"Hmm, whatever you say. Well, take you seat and turn to page one hundred and ten."

Uryu proceeded to sit down, and Ichigo watched Mr. Handicrafts as he eased into his seat. The orange-haired teen frowned as he gazed upon the last quincy's wrapped hands. He had been so sure of being stronger that the idiot nearly put the entire town at risk, only coming around at the last moment to try and save his life—before the others spontaneously appeared and pushed him too far away from Ichigo to do anything. Ichigo shook his head to himself in disbelief, still unsure what to think of the other teen.

"Don't let it bother you. His injuries aren't your fault," Rukia began, startling Ichigo out of his thoughts. "He brought it on himself. Besides, it would have happened anyway." He stared at the soul reaper, not sure what to say at first. Then he scoffed and turned his head away toward the window as he registered what all she pointed out.

"You've got to be kidding. I'm not the least bit worried about Uryu." And he wasn't. He truly wasn't, despite the other's injuries. He just wasn't sure what to think about him now. He had been prepared to do what Jonas ended up doing and risk injuring himself even further to save him when his zanpakuto began breaking down. Maybe there was hope yet for the arrogant quincy rival.

"Interesting. I never suggested you were worried about him. If you recall, all I said was: don't let it bother you," Rukia retorted. He thought he heard a smirk in her voice which she hid by burying her face in her text when he spun around in his chair.

"Why, you!" he growled.

Dammit. So, maybe he was a little worried. Not that he would ever admit it out loud. Although, why he was worried, he couldn't explain.

.

*Jonas Mazeri*

Jonas blinked and found himself inside his own mind once again, surrounded by tall trees. The canopies extended far above his head, almost completely covering the dark skies above with their equally shadowed tops. Thick branches graced the ancient trunks, extending from the brown barked cores like outstretched arms reaching for something. And despite the apparent darkness here, he could easily see the vibrant dark greens coloring the leaves, showing the life within the plants around him.

Jonas spun around. Trees encircled him as far as he could see, branches interlacing and forming a webbing of warm bark over and around him. Deep shadows hung about in the distance, filling the empty expanse beneath the canopy with inky black darkness. Neither menacing nor inviting. Simply there. Black lightning and flames danced in the shadows, flickering with trails of bright iridescent flashes that seemed to overpower his own strength.

Trees swayed in his peripheral, moved by a nonexistent breeze, pulling his attention back to his surroundings with the faint rustling of leaves and branches. He thought he felt a menacing presence in the atmosphere of his mind, pressing down on him with killing intent. Jonas concentrated, searching for Tasha Rein's calming presence, and found a muffled echo of her existence. Panic filled his chest as he made his way toward the clearing, hoping that he would find her safe and well once he got there.

Eventually, he found himself on the precipice of a clearing, staring out unto the clear field of gently swaying ankle-high grasses with a hint of fondness to his eyes. Despite the overarching darkness spreading across the sky like a blank black canvas, he noticed a lone white moon shining down from above. And although the light was pale and cool in its radiance, it shimmered like the hearth of home, casting a pillar of lunar glow down upon the grassy field that was neither cold nor hot in its brilliance.

In the center of the clearing was a single slab of stone, glistening beneath the moonlight like a crown jewel shined in sunlight. What he saw made his heart plummet. There, where he had once pulled Tasha Rein's hilt from the stone, was the physical incarnation of her power, chained to the stone and gagged.

Tasha Rein was slightly shorter than he was, with long black and silver hair and striking black eyes slightly hidden beneath bangs that appeared to almost collide with her shadowy orbs. She wore a black, form-fitting kimono with dark blue accents along the outer edges and dark blue cloth on the inside. Dark blue threads held it all together. While the body of the kimono was form-fitting, the arms and legs had plenty of room and were quite baggy.

Her black and silver hair framed her face and cascaded past her shoulders, pooling at the nape of her neck ever so slightly before disappearing from sight. Her pale skin reflected the moonlight like a mirror and almost glowed from its radiance, the sharp contrast between the shades of her hair and skin standing out in the darkness of his mind.

He nearly ran to her before she jerked her head to the side, indicating another's presence within his mind. And the sight of the woman made his heart nearly stop. She had long silver hair and dark blue eyes. It was his mother! But that couldn't be possible. He shook his head. Her blue eyes were glowing red. It wasn't her. It couldn't be her. She was dead! She died roughly eight years ago.

.

*Flashback*

He could feel a sharp rise of essence aura in the air, an invisible power rippling through the night. It was tainted with malice and hate and a desire to kill. It blanketed the surrounding area, pressing an unseen weight down upon the town. It grew stronger, filling him with more general unease.

It was strong. Stronger than almost anything he had felt before.

That power was followed by another rise in essence aura that he recognized as belonging to their—he has two siblings—parents. Their power rose in challenge, sending out their intent to protect wherever they were located. The aura increase made the air stifling, making it harder to breathe as they got closer. He felt as if his body were moving through quicksand. Like he was walking through water. He felt heavy, his body moving slower even though he didn't slow his pace.

And the power from their parents was stressed. Unusual, considering how strong he knew them to be. He didn't know what to think about this logically, even though his instincts kept screaming the same thing they had been screeching all night.

Faster. Must go faster. Cannot wait!

Faster. Faster. Faster!

He was trying to pinpoint his parents' location and was forced to manifest the essence ribbon belonging to their mother, the rising essence auras in the night muddling his senses and forcing him to use this technique. He held the ribbon in his hand, the power unique to his mother and coming directly off the center of her powers fluttering into his grip as he searched for it, and he followed it like a trail back to her, the black ribbon with golden specks and a single white line separating the solid black outer edge from the equally dark body, the only thing accurately leading the way.

It led them through dark alleyways and streets brightly lit with light magic. They dodged panicked citizens as the people capable of moving under the pressure of the auras ran away from the ensuing conflict. They continued past dozens of others that were sprawled out on the ground, unable to flee. Some were unconscious, the power overwhelming them. Others were paralyzed in one position or another, unable to move their bodies, their eyes following him and his siblings full of terror.

Using his mother's essence ribbon as a guide, he could sense multiple essence auras and ribbons surrounding their parents. The foreign ribbons were enveloped with a menacing red aura, indicating that they were vampires. His stomach twisted with more anxiety, tying a knot deep inside him.

*x*

He could never explain how he understood what the ribbons and auras meant. He also couldn't elaborate on how he knew what it all meant or why he could feel the auras in the air when not everybody could, despite their effects affecting everyone around them. The only one he could even remotely describe were the ribbons and how each one was a different coloration depending on what abilities the owner possessed. But even that much, was guesswork. All that he could really explain was that he knew.

Mother and Father always told him that he had good instincts, but they didn't explain beyond that.

*x*

As he and his siblings got closer to their parents, he sensed that the vampires were pushing them to their limits. He could feel their auras faltering and he watched in horror as his mother's essence ribbon cracked in his hand.

This was bad. Very bad.

He felt bile rise in his throat and his stomach tightened painfully. They needed to hurry. He needed to see that their parents were okay. This sensation was not normal. Mother's essence ribbon should not be crumbling this way.

Faster. Must go faster. Cannot wait!

Faster. Faster. Faster!

As they neared the conflict and the final scene entered his vision, his breath caught in his throat. He stopped mid-run, his siblings crashing unceremoniously into his back, flinging them all from the alley and onto the street. He somehow remained standing, mouth agape in horror, his mother's essence ribbon crumbling into nothing as he saw the reason before him.

One of the vampires had his hand in her chest.

Her head was leaning forward against her chest, her long silver hair smattered with blood and covering her face. At first glance, one could have thought that she was leaning forward, but a closer inspection revealed that her entire body was relaxed, legs bent forward awkwardly and arms hanging limply by her sides, her entire body suspended by her assailant's hand. Her sword lied on the ground beside her feet, the blade broken into two pieces.

He glanced around for his father and saw him lying face down on the ground behind her, the handle of his sword beneath his right hand with his face turned away from them. From his positioning, it appeared that his mother and father had stood back-to-back against their opponents and that he had fallen forward to his current position.

Despite what had to have been a loud—or at the very least not quiet—entrance, the vampires hadn't noticed them yet, their attentions still focused on their parents before them. The vampires seemed pleased with themselves; their various faces lined with satisfaction.

Jonas reached out with his senses, desperately reaching for his parents. No essence aura emanated from either of them. Nor could he manifest their essence ribbons. Their magic essence was just gone. Nothing fluttered in their air from their bodies—even their spirits were gone. All that lingered of them was rapidly fading away.

They couldn't be…

Dead?!

"No!"

*End Flashback*

.

"M-mom?" Jonas whispered, almost disbelievingly. But when the woman drew the same rapier that had stabbed him so long ago, he realized that it wasn't his mother. Raising his essence aura, he reached a hand over his shoulder where his weapon would summon into existence.

"Descend, Tasha Rein!"

.

*Shila Mezere*

Shila had been coming to her inner world for as long as she could remember. It was a winter wonderland and as far as the eyes could see, there was nothing but snow and ice. White rolling hills and snow-covered earth filled her line of sight, continuing far into the distance. They were marred by iced rivers and frozen waterfalls, adding to the world's beauty. All the trees were encased with ice, their leaves and needles glistening in the sunlight.

Now, it looked like someone had turned the heat up. There were dozens of chaotic fires all around, melting the ice and filling the otherwise quiet atmosphere with the sounds of crackling flames. Smoke filled the normally clear blue sky, blocking the faint yellow sun that hung above. And the light snow fall that persisted at all times was gray, mixed with the ashes of the burning world.

"Juka Reyno!" she called, desperate to see her Weapon appear before her. She could barely feel her presence in her mind, drowned out by the screaming of a male voice inside her head.

"Shila!" the archer heard, her Weapon echoing her cry. They continued shouting for each other until they eventually found each other, the two women embracing for a short period before releasing.

Juka Reyno was a beautiful woman that was as tall as she was—five foot four inches tall. She had long white hair tossed behind her head in gentle curls, flowing to the center of her back and stunning bright blue eyes. She wore a floor-length white and blue dress that shimmered as she walked, as if she were adorned with multiple shining crystals. It shifted between blue and white as she moved, the garment unsure of the color it desired to be. The dress was streaked with black and red stripes, adding a feral touch to the otherwise elegant white.

"Juka, what is happening?" Shila inquired, glancing around her inner world with a touch of curiosity masked with concern. The last thing she remembered…

Neil bit her.

That son of a bitch actually bit her!

I am going to freeze his ass when I find him.

"I am not sure. But I feel another connection here. Can you not hear his screams?" Juka replied, forcing the silver-haired archer to pause and listen.

It took a bit of concentration, but she could feel Neil's agony. It felt like his spirit and body were ripping themselves apart. She could hear the dual wielder's screams echoing across the snow-blanketed world. At first, it felt like he was all around her. But eventually, the sound narrowed to a small corner of her mind where she had never gone before. It called to her, prompting her to head in that direction.

"I think we should go there," Juka observed.

"I agree."

.

*Neil Agamon*

What the hell did Yretro do to me? Neil pondered as he glanced around his inner world.

The dual wielder found himself in the world of fire. A blank black canvas extending as far as the eye could see. A flat plain of darkness and shadows punctuated only by the swellings of flames rising from the formless ground. A faint sound of crackling could be heard as the fires popped and sputtered in a near constant whisper around him. The sky above mirrored the world around the firebrand, pitch black in nature and spread across the ceiling of his newfound destination, continuing onwards toward infinity.

The flames were a myriad of different colors, a sea of rainbow fires dancing around him in the perpetual dark void. The vast majority were a combination of oranges and reds, shifting restlessly around him, their embers shuddering upon a non-existent breeze. They licked at his skin and clothing, dangerously nipping at the edges of the fabric and slightly burning his skin. As he felt them passing over his body, he got the sensation of wrongness in his mind, an instinctual feeling that he could not describe with words. He blinked. Iridescent flames flickered all around him. They were not merely orange and red.

He proceeded through the rampaging fires and came face to face with Engeta Zanu, his pale white duplicate. Neil shifted on the balls of his feet. Engeta Zanu was looking at him differently, the reds of his eyes glowing crimson in the darkness. And as he glanced around, concerned, he noticed what looked like falling ash drifting through the air. But upon closer inspection, he noticed it was just dirty snow.

What is snow doing here?

'Hey, partner,' Engeta drawled, his echoing voice drawing the dual wielder's attention. 'How about we have some fun?' With a wide grin, Engeta charged Neil, barely giving him time to call his blades to defend himself.

"Burn, Engeta Zanu!"

Terminology

My Universe:

Beasts:

Dark Severiin: think of a Deviljho from Monster Hunter when you think of this thing. Physically, it is a bit different, but I am using a lot of comparisons to describe characters and things. This is the thing I am vaguely describing at the beginning of the chapter that Jonas and his friends were fighting. The characters from my story are being pulled from their timeline during the Dark Severiin fight in Arc 1 of Chronicles of Seraphia (the book series I am working on).

.

.

Magic (General):

Magic Core: the core of an individual's magical ability. No Magic Core means that the person cannot wield Magic AT ALL.

.

Magic Class: One of ten major classifications of various magics.

.

Magic Subclass: one of several magics that make up a magic class.

.

.

Magic (Weapons):

Magic Weapon: a magical Weapon bound to an individual from birth. Magic Weapons are created from Weapon Spirits that choose a child as it is born and meld with the newborn's spirit to become their Magic Weapon later in life. Weapon Spirits are reincarnated whenever they choose a new wielder (after they are separated from their current one). Typically wielded only by living people in either the Light World or the Dark World. Used to send spirits on to the realms.

.

Weapon Magic Wielder: Weapon Magic Wielders are able to manipulate the Magic Essence in their bodies to summon powerful Weapons and communicate with the Weapon Essences to gain new powers and abilities. If one can only use Weapon Magic, then they are also referred to as Guardians (this term can also be used for someone that uses a Spirit Weapon or Hell Weapon if the Weapon is the only magical ability they have).

.

.

Weapon Spirit/Weapon Essence: the personality and appearance of a Magic or Spirit Weapon within and beyond the wielder's inner world. Each one has a unique appearance and powers. They choose to bind to an individual's spirit (typically at birth) and help to shape their wielder's development. In the end, it is hard (sometimes) to distinguish the two from each other (what is the natural state of the wielder and what part of the wielder's personality and traits were influenced by the Weapon kind of question).

.

Tasha Rein: Jonas's Magic Weapon.

Humanoid Form: 5'5". Long black and silver hair and black eyes. She wore a black, form-fitting kimono with dark blue accents along the outer edges and dark blue cloth on the inside. Dark blue threads held it all together. While the body of the kimono was form-fitting, the arms and legs had plenty of room and were quite baggy.

.

Engeta Zanu: Neil Agamon's Magic Weapon.

Humanoid Form: looks like Neil except he is all white. Wears a dark orange kimono with a crimson inner liner and dark red stitches. Wears a pair of baggy red pants that flare at his feet with matching crimson socks slipped into a basic flat black sandal. There is a red flame design etched into the bottom of the robe's top half.

Lore: Engeta Zanu also means Twin Flickering Flames. The idea that a flame reflects the spirit of a person (hence why he is Neil's duplicate), with different colors indicating different moods and the color white representing the complete balance of all that power (since it is said that white is the conglomeration of all color whereas black is the absence of color). Engeta Zanu is a pair of dual long swords.

.

Kisi Ri: Magic Weapon belonging to The Matriarch and, by extension, the feral vampires under her control.

Lore: functions by inserting vampire magical abilities into a person's Magic Core, thus transforming them into a vampire. High success rate.

.

Juka Reyno: Shila Mezere's Magic Weapon.

Humanoid Form: 5'4". Long white hair tossed behind her head in gentle curls flowing to the center of her back. Stunned bright blue eyes. Wears a floor-length white and blue dress that shimmered as she walked, now streaked with lines of red and black.

.

.

Magic Weapon Classes: Magic Weapons have classes which determine how exactly they are used, along with describing total size of the Weapons etc. Basically, a dual longsword class is different than a dual short sword class and indicates the length of the blades. There are also dual classes which will be explained later.

Weapons are Melee (up close), Ranged (far away), Defensive (which falls under the melee class), or Dual Form (two different types of weapons that are part of one weapon. Think of the weapons from Bloodborne and how almost every single one had 2 forms.)

.

Sword Lengths- Daggers are between 5 to 10 inches long. Short swords are between 10 and 18 inches long. Long swords are between 18 and 30 inches long. Greatswords are between 30 and 48 inches long. Ultra greatswords are between 48 and 72 inches long.

Curved swords mean that the flat side of the blade (the part that is not sharp) is curved, along with the bladed edge. Regular swords are straight here, regardless of whether the blade itself arcs into a curve. (for a comparison, Zangetsu would be considered an Ultra Greatsword class.)

Extra Notes/General Seraphia Worldbuilding:

Jonas Mazeri's appearance: So, I never fully describe exactly what his face (or anyone else's face really) in my universe looks like. I give the basic hair and eye color, heights, and builds but I leave the faces open to the imagination (unless there is a specific scar I wish to address). So, I thought, how cool would it be if Jonas looked like Ichigo? (guess you can figure out which character I like the most, eh?)

.

Light World/Dark World: two different worlds that exist as copies of each other. This is where all life lives before it dies. (think of them like the World of the Living in Bleach.)

.

Realms: There are actually 12 realms where spirits live after life. 10 of them exist where their specific magics are prominent (and each of these 10 have a light side and a dark side to them). Then, there is Hell (realm of Sinners). Finally, there is the Otherlands (which is the realm of ALL Weapon Spirits).

.

Betweenlands: The dimension that keeps all the realms and the worlds connected. (kind of like the Dangai).

.

In my universe, all things give off essence ribbons. Everything has a small amount of magic essence which then strongly or weakly gives off an aura of power. So, Jonas has the ability to see these ribbons (all ribbons) and since there aren't that many Essence Ribbons in this universe (because the only ones currently belong to him and his friends), it is far easier for him to search for his missing friend this way.

.

In my universe, before the kids got sent to the Bleach universe, both Neil and Jonas were attacked by vampires under someone's control named The Matriarch. The Matriarch is a person with the Magic Weapon, Kisi Ri, and she can use it to transform people into vampires. Those that she initiates the change with, can use her Weapon to varying degrees.

Bleach Universe:

Magic:

Kido: The over-arching classification of spells used by soul reapers. Divided into Bakudo, Hado, or Kaido.

.

Bakudo Spells: Way of Binding. Spells used to restrain or restrict movement or spells.

.

Bakudo #1 Sai: a weak binding kido spell that forces the target's hands behind their back.

.

Bakudo #61: Rikujokoro: Six-Rod Light Restraint.

.

Inemuri: Forced Slumber spell. User holds their hand in front of their victim's face, the victim's pupils dilate several times before they pass out.

.

Hakufuku: White Concealment: a spell that causes the target to see the illusion of purple cherry blossoms falling around them, sometimes also along with the smell of sweet flowers. Then their vision blurs and their mind becomes disoriented and confused before they fall unconscious. Target has an unclear memory once they awaken.

.

Tanma Otoshi: Time-Out Drop. The kido spell that Shinji used to knock Ichigo unconscious before his struggle with his inner hollow with the visoreds.

.

.

Hado Spells: Way of Destruction. Spells used to inflict damage.

.

Kaido: Healing Spiritual Arts. The spells and abilities used by soul reapers to heal injuries.

.

Quincy Specific:

Quincy: A human that can manipulate spirit particles in the air to form a bow and arrow. When they kill hollows, they destroy their souls.

.

Soul Reaper Specific:

Soul Reaper (Death God/Shinigami): A dead spirit that guides lost souls to the afterlife via Konso.

.

Zanpakuto (Soul Cutter): a weapon born from a soul reaper's soul. The fragment of their soul that is forged for battle.

.

Shikai: the first true release of a zanpakuto. Considered the second form of a zanpakuto since all normal soul reapers wield sealed swords.

.

Release Shikai: To release a zanpakuto to Shikai in the bleach universe, each of them has a unique call phrase that causes the sword to transform into its shikai release.

.

Seal Zanpakuto: Soul Reapers can seal their zanpakuto after releasing it and finishing their battle. Those wielding Magic Weapons can do the same thing.

.

Bankai: the second and final release of a zanpakuto. Considered the third form of a zanpakuto since all normal soul reapers wield sealed swords. The achievement of Bankai can increase a fighter's power by 5 to 10 times and oftentimes takes up to 10 years to master its usage.

.

Konso: Soul Burial. Allows a Whole to pass onto the Soul Society.

.

Hollow Specific:

Hollow: A spirit being that ate out its own heart in its suffering and one that continues searching for spirit energy and souls to relieve its never-ending hunger and desire to fulfill the emptiness of its existence.

(You all should read 'On the precipice of defeat' by MissFlesh. Holy crap! I loved the unique perspective of a Hollow that this writer gives. So many fanfictions skip over the gruesome aspects of existing as a hollow and portray it like some sort of glamorous existence that downplays how horrible being a hollow really is (they romanticize it, not that I am saying the other stories are bad by any stretch. They aren't, but they don't fully immerse you in the terrible state of being a hollow like this fanfiction does) and this author got into the nitty-gritty of life as a hollow and truly captured how bad life as one is. Truly a magnificent read and gives a whole new perspective of life as a monster.) It isn't completed and I don't think it ever will be, but there is plenty of story here to sink your teeth into that it fully captures the hopelessness of that life.

.

Menos Grande: A classification of the three most-powerful forms that hollows can take. Gillian is the lowest. Adjuchas is the middle. Vasto Lorde is the highest.

.

Gillian: that monster hollow that Ichigo and Uryu fought at the beginning. The lowest of the class of Menos Grande hollows.

.

Hybrid (Visored/Arrancar) Specific:

.

Characters:

Ichigo Kurosaki: Main character for Bleach. Wields the zanpakuto, Zangetsu.

.

Uryu Ishida: He is a Quincy. Calls himself the Last Quincy.

.

Rukia Kuchiki: The Soul Reaper that gave Ichigo his soul reaper powers.

.

Tessai Tsukabishi: an employee of Urahara Shop and a childhood friend of Kisuke and Yoruichi. He is also the former Kido Commander in the Gotei 13.

.

Extra Notes/General Bleach Worldbuilding:

Hueco Mundo: The world of the Hollows.

.

Soul Society: the place where spirits pass onto (heaven).

.

World of the Living: Earth. Where humans live out their lives and die.

Urahara Shop: the candy store belonging to Kisuke Urahara. Based in the World of the Living. Home to Kisuke, Tessai, Jinta, and Ururu.

Close Similarities/Similar Skills:

Magic Weapon/Zanpakuto/Spirit Weapon: Magic Weapons and Spiritual Magic Weapons are similar to zanpakuto in that they are Weapons unique to an individual. However, their origins are different.

.

Essence Ribbon/Spirit Ribbon: In Bleach, Spirit Ribbons turn red if a person is a soul reaper, otherwise they are white. This is how Uryu said that he figured out about Ichigo and Rukia. They are visible rays of spirit energy.

In my universe, Essence Ribbons change color and pattern based on the magical abilities the person has demonstrated to be capable of using. They can also have auras. They are visible rays of magic energy and get their name from magic's base term: Magic Essence.

In this fanfiction, one can detect how someone is feeling (emotionally or physically) by touching their ribbon. This is a more advanced technique than simply feeling someone's pressure/aura.

.

Divine Sight/Seeing Spirit Ribbons: In Bleach, Rukia states that the ability to see Spirit Ribbons (rays of spirit energy) is something that only high-ranking soul reapers can use.

Divine Sight is the special ability to see Essence Ribbons.

.

Essence Aura/Spiritual Pressure (Reiatsu): In Bleach, Spiritual Pressure is the pressure that a person's spiritual power (Reiryoku) exerts (described like reiryoku output).

Essence Aura is the pressure that a person's magical power exerts. It gets its name from magic's base term: Magic Essence.

In this fanfiction, one can detect how someone is feeling (emotionally or physically) by feeling their aura. This is typically a beginner technique, but the more advanced sensing requirements put it more in the intermediate category.

.

Energy/Spiritual Power (Reiryoku): In Bleach, a person's spiritual power/spiritual energy is referred to as Reiryoku. It is their personal wellspring of power that is all their own. Each person has a certain amount and a limit they cannot surpass.

In my universe, this is referred to as Energy. In my universe, Energy can be divided into 2 categories: Magic Energy and Spirit Energy (with Spirit Energy being a mere subset of Magic Energy).

In this fanfiction, when one's spiritual power/energy is exhausted, the person collapses from lack of remaining energy.

.

Magic Essence/Reishi (spiritual matter): In Bleach, reishi is what makes up objects in Soul Society and Hueco Mundo. The concentrations there are higher because they are the two spirit worlds of Bleach although some does exist in the World of the Living.

Magic Essence: the basis of ALL magical happenings in my universe. My entire world is formed from Magic Essence (which broken down is called Essence Elements, which we won't touch on until much later). Therefore, nearly all magic skills have some part of their name coming from one of these two words.

.

Essence Elements/Atoms (Kishi): Kishi is like the World of the Living version of Reishi and makes up nearly all objects in the World of the Living and is a term to describe atoms as a whole.

Essence Elements are my universe's version of protons, neutrons, and electrons. The term as a whole can be used interchangeably with magic essence while referring to a single element cannot. They are further broken down into Sub-Elemental Essences (which are basically subatomic).

.

Inner World/Mindscape/Realm of the Zanpakuto: this definition is basically identical between universes. Regardless of what phrase one wants to use, they all mean the same thing. Inner World. Inner Mind. Mindscape. Landscape of the Mind. Realm of the Weapon Spirit. Realm of the Zanpakuto. Literally all refers to the place in a wielder's mind where the Weapon resides and where they go to commune directly with the Weapon that is a part of them.

.

Magic Weapon Auto-Dispel/Zanpakuto Auto-Seal: Just like how zanpakutos revert back to their sealed state when their wielder is knocked unconscious, a similar thing happens when a Magic Weapon Wielder is knocked unconscious (their Weapon dispels).

.

Yretro Kosuka- is Kisuke Urahara.

Final Notes:

I want to thank Andygoesrawr from Reddit for the amazing breakdown of the differences between the terms Reishi, Reiryoku, and Reiatsu that he posted nearly 8 years ago on the Reddit page: The Difference between Reishi, Reiryoku and Reiatsu. He also covered the concept of Kishi. I found this page and read it to make sure I wasn't messing up the distinction between the three too badly (turns out that I really was and, in my confusion over the terms when I was laying the foundation for the magic in my world, I ended up doing the same thing as this here was. Go figure).

.

Also, I am editing how I am doing the terminology, etc. and how it will all be organized. Hopefully, it is better than previously. I am also planning on including all the definitions etc. at the end of the chapters (as opposed to stating which chapter I defined them at the beginning of the chapter and pushing off the start of the story each time).

.

I know I stated that Kisuke is Yretro from my universe. So, based on the above information, one would be correct in believing that he should have an Essence Ribbon. However, the reason why this is not true is because he was essentially reborn in the Bleach universe. Therefore, he follows their natural laws not mine.

.

And the people in my world do not use glasses. This is why Jonas has no clue what they are.

.

I am also aware that I am repeating the terms, etc. at the end of the chapters, but I felt it would be easier on the reader than if they had to search a different chapter each time they wanted a refresher.

.

I have to say that I love the Bleach Wiki. Here's a shout of thanks to everyone that made that website into the brilliant resource that it is. I would never remember all the specific spells otherwise.

.

I have Kisuke using Inemuri and Hakufuku here and I don't think it is too out of character for him to be doing so simply because he was a captain and founded the Department of Research and Development in canon. He didn't get into either position by not knowing his stuff. I think that he knows, and would use, these spells when the situation warranted it. (Besides, in this version, he is also Yretro Kosuka, and that guy wouldn't pass up on learning any skill if he could.)

.

I have Rukia being aware of Hakufuku because I think she would have studied a lot more and been more knowledgeable simply because she was adopted into the Kuchiki clan and more would have been expected of her. Whether or not she would use it would be irrelevant. She couldn't fail to learn all that she could, or she would tarnish the Kuchiki name.

.

I feel like I am rushing some of this although there isn't a lot of a timeline between when Rukia is taken and Ichigo leaves for Soul Society to save her. So, there is a lot of cramming of things happening. I am including bits and pieces of the Bleach episodes (changing minor details as necessary to fit what has actually happened so far) so everyone knows where we are in the timeline.

While adding in all the extra characters and shoving their storylines forward.

This chapter was the longest so far, but I gave a flashback to Jonas's past and showed off his, Neil's and Shila's inner worlds. The chapters will get longer as time goes on and I work the other characters in.

.

Hope you enjoyed! Please review and let me know what you all think! Thanks for reading!
