*Chapter 5: Bloodlines*

*Rukia Kuchiki*

A Menos Grande appeared. And somehow, he defeated it. It won't take long for the news to get back to Soul Society. Ichigo…

It was hard to believe that he hadn't been a soul reaper for very long yet. And he had already faced a Menos Grande of all hollows. And pushed it back to the hollow realm somehow through a feat of power she herself had never been able to muster. But now…now they would surely find out about him. And her sin. What she had done. And would probably do again, even knowing what the punishment would be. Just seeing him that night had been enough to sway her. The look of determination on his face.

Just like Kaien.

She hadn't loved the former lieutenant of squad thirteen in that manner. It was more an admiration than a crush. She had been in awe of his character. Besides, she never would have come between him and Miyako, the other person in the squad she admired. He had treated her normally, giving her the same responses that he did every other squad member. He didn't give her special treatment because she was a Kuchiki. He gave her a place to call home where she could truly flourish.

And she had killed him.

Then, she had given Ichigo her power, a human teenager bearing her mentor's face, not intending for him to take almost all of it, but he had. He had stood up against the hollow threatening his family, and then he had proceeded to carry out her duties as a soul reaper until she got her powers back. He gained her trust and admiration for how he behaved. He acted almost like Kaien. Serious. Determined. Loyal. And he treated her like he did everyone else.

She didn't know when her feelings blossomed into something else. Something more. But she had them anyway. Something she was trying to deny, if for no other reason than because she was dead, and he was alive. They could never truly be together. And soon, the Soul Society would come to take her back, and make her atone for her sins.

A member from the stealth force had found her already. The day Ichigo faced Grand Fisher and drove the powerful hollow away. She was surprised no one else had yet come, but she was under no illusions that they wouldn't arrive soon. She had to leave. And quickly, especially if she wanted Ichigo to not get tied up in all of this.

I've been under suspicion from the very beginning. And it won't be much longer before they come for me.

.

She was debating back and forth in her mind on whether or not to talk to Ichigo about it all. It was her fault that he was wrapped up in this mess after all. And she cared deeply for his safety. But she knew if she told him that he would want to help her. It was just the way he did things, and she wanted him as far away as she could get him. For his own safety. She couldn't bear the thought of being the reason he gets killed. She could live with never being able to see him again. But not if he dies before her very eyes.

I can't be responsible for his death like I am for Kaien's.

Rukia slid her textbooks into her bag and left the school, her mind idly drifting back to the Soul Reaper Academy and comparing the differences between them. The two schools weren't all that fundamentally different. Just the course work between them all differed. Otherwise, both places taught what they believed their students would require in order to succeed in life. It was strange how similar the concept of school would be in two different places.

She saw Ichigo and ran up to him, calling his name on impulse. If she was going to say something to him, now would be the best time. They were alone. No one else would have to hear what she had to say. Her heart was hammering in her throat. Threatening to make her choke on her words before she could try to get them out.

How do I even begin to apologize? Or to admit how I feel about you?

.

*Ichigo Kurosaki*

He was heading home after school, school bag slung over his shoulder. As he walked, he tried to figure out anything about the new arrivals in town, based on what he had already seen, but it was hard. There was very little information he had about them, other than the one seemed to be transforming into a vampire, however that was supposed to work. He shook his head. Dwelling on what happened wasn't going to get him anywhere. He briefly thought about going to Hat and Clog's shop and demanding answers, but ultimately decided against it for now. He would wait a couple days. Then go to the crazy shopkeeper.

"Ichigo!" Rukia shouted at him as he was leaving school. He spun around, seeing her run towards him. Alarm shifted through his body. She usually didn't do that unless there was a hollow nearby.

Waiting until she was closer, he asked, "What's up? A hollow?" He couldn't sense anything but that wasn't surprising. He was notoriously bad at sensing spiritual pressure of any kind. The fact that he had managed to use Spirit Ribbons was surprising to even himself. And the only thing he had to say about how he had done it was that he was just following his instincts. There was no conscious decision. He had just reached out with his mind and found them.

"No…it's not that," Rukia muttered, her voice wavering slightly. She had been acting weird today. First, she snapped at him that morning before school. Then, she was snippy in class when Uryu showed up. He didn't know if it was just a girl thing or if he had done something to piss her off. He was hoping not. His shins couldn't take much more of her abuse.

"Ichigo…are you…feeling okay?" she finally asked, her voice still subdued.

He glanced at her in confusion. Huh? This certainly wasn't where he was expecting the conversation to go. "Yeah, I feel great. But why are you asking?" he responded, not entirely sure if he should tell her about how his chest was feeling. The spikes of cold shooting through his sternum were increasing in pain and intensity, culminating in his own attitude with Uryu at lunch after he invited the archer to eat with him. But the way she was acting made him second guess telling her. He'd talk with Hat and Clogs later if it got much worse. No sense dragging her into this since it was probably nothing.

"No reason. I'm just glad you're okay," Rukia answered, her voice evening out. But he got the distinct impression she was hiding something from him. Or was he projecting?

Yeah, okay, but even I'm not that dense. Something is up. "Is there gonna be another one like yesterday?" he inquired, trying to shove the conversation in another direction and get her to talk.

"If a Menos Grande showed up every day, we'd be in trouble," Rukia remarked wryly. She either didn't see his purpose in asking the question or was now trying to avoid him.

Okay, fine, I'll just ask. "Rukia, you know you're…uh…acting a bit strange today. Did something happen?" Whether it was the big brother in him or just his protective nature that elicited that question, he couldn't quite say. Part of him twinged at seeing her in such straits, although he didn't have a word that he chose to classify it with yet. But he was tired of beating around the bush, feeling like he was walking on eggshells around this woman that's supposed to be his partner.

She looked up and opened her mouth, almost like she was going to say something. Then she turned her violet eyes away from him, hiding her expression from his view.

I guess she isn't going to tell me.

.

*Jonas Mazeri*

"M-mom?" Jonas whispered, almost disbelievingly. But when the woman drew the same rapier that had stabbed him so long ago, he realized that it wasn't his mother. Raising his essence aura, he reached a hand over his shoulder where his weapon would summon into existence.

"Descend, Tasha Rein!"

Tasha Rein's familiar weight settled onto his back as it summoned into existence. He barely removed it from his back, the sheathe disappearing as he swung her into a defensive position, before the person looking like his mother lunged for him. He growled low in his throat. Her dark blue eyes were glowing a menacing red and her essence ribbon shined a vicious crimson.

This was not his mother.

He deflected her rapier with his ultra greatsword, the pure black blade easily knocking the poker aside. He leaped forward, shoving her with his shoulder and sending her flying backwards, her body put off balance by his body check. Focusing his mind, he pumped energy into his blade, raising it high above his head. Once he felt he had charged a significant amount, he slammed his blade down, releasing the blade beam attack against his foe. He watched his 'mother's' body careen into the trees, a look of shock and disbelief crossing her face before she was sent away.

Quickly, he pivoted and went to Tasha Rein, slamming the sharp edge of his summoned Weapon into the chains holding her prisoner. With her freed, she tore the gag from her mouth and took a few gasping breaths. Her black and silver hair was in disarray, the strands flying free and haphazardly about her face. Her black eyes were narrowed with rage he could now sense with her freedom, the fury permeating their connection with a heat he could barely contain.

"Who the hell is she? She's not my mother," Jonas asked, curiosity and rage warring within his heart. He wanted to know who would impersonate his mother and why. And he was so angry that someone would do such a thing and attempt to tarnish his memory of her.

And he really didn't need two women inside his head. One was more than enough.

'You want to know who I am, boy?' The woman spoke from the tree line. Blood ran down her face from a gash above her left eye while scratches and gouges littered her body. The branches she had been thrown into did not do her any favors.

"Yes!"

'If you can defeat me, I will tell you.'

"Fine."

He and Tasha Rein readied themselves as the woman flew toward them, expertly slipping between the two combatants. Her rapier parried and blocked each of their swords as she danced between them. And when she couldn't block, she dodged, causing their swings to miss her entirely.

But while they were missing, she wasn't. A cut ran from his wrist to his right elbow, stinging immensely as blood dripped from his arm. Another slash ran from his left hip to his right shoulder across his back when she got behind him. A quick dodge on his part allowed him to avoid death, but not the injury she ended up inflicting.

And Tasha Rein wasn't faring much better. She had a gash above her right eye, forcing it closed. And her left arm hung limp and useless at her side, the tendons in her shoulder having been severed. Her black and silver hair was smeared red with blood, the strands matted to her scalp with both it and sweat.

We have to do something soon. Do you have any ideas? Jonas thought to his Weapon. He hoped that his mother's doppelganger couldn't hear what they were discussing. It was the only way he had to coordinate a strategy with Tasha Rein.

A strong part of him hated the idea of using his blade against his mother. Even if he knew that it was a fake and that she really wasn't there. It just felt so…wrong.

'I have a plan, but are you willing to do whatever it takes?'

Jonas frowned before responding, Yes. What do you have in mind?

'Okay, this is what we should do…"

.

*Shila Mezere*

She walked for a while across the ruins of her mind, carefully avoiding the flames that destroyed her winter wonderland. But as she neared Neil's screaming, she found that it was harder and harder to maneuver around the fires. Eventually, she came upon a place that seemed like it was surrounded by his power, his raging essence aura swirling in the air like a barrier between him and her.

It looked like a bubble of fire around him, the intense heat nearly pushing her away. But she gathered her power around her and dropped the air temperature so she wouldn't burn. Glancing at Juka Reyno beside her, the Weapon simply shrugged in response. The only way to shut up his infernal screaming would probably to go to him and fix whatever is wrong.

Tentatively, she reached out for the barrier and placed her palm against it. Then she felt herself falling.

.

*Neil Agamon*

'Hey, partner,' Engeta drawled, his echoing voice drawing the dual wielder's attention. 'How about we have some fun?' With a wide grin, Engeta charged Neil, barely giving him time to call his blades to defend himself.

"Burn, Engeta Zanu!"

Neil felt the familiar weight of his dual long swords summon into existence just in time to block his doppelganger's attack. His duplicate gazed at him with wild glowing red eyes, his presence through their connection murky and twisted. The dual wielder frowned as he blocked his twin's attack, feeling strength in the other's blade that felt…different. He couldn't explain the sensation, but he got the distinct impression that he was about to get his ass kicked.

Engeta Zanu leaned into his strike enough to kick Neil in the chest, sending the brown-haired teen flying backwards in his inner world. He landed with a grunt, barely rolling out of the way before his Weapon came flying towards him with a yell. He stumbled to his feet and barely caught his breath before the pale duplicate flung him off his feet once more.

Damnit. I am seriously outmatched here. How do I defeat him and get him back to normal?

With a shudder, the flames in his inner world suddenly whipped around before stilling and shrinking, a blast of cool air appearing seemingly out of nowhere. From the direction of the arctic air, came Shila along with a woman he had never met before.

What the hell?

.

*Shila Mezere*

It was the first time she had ever heard of someone travelling to another individual's inner world. And if she hadn't seen it for herself, she would have called herself crazy. But she was here, wherever here was exactly, right by Neil. She could feel his essence aura, the imposing heat settling around her like a warm blanket without burning her.

And he was facing a person that looked exactly like him except the guy was white as snow. Using identical Weapons. Must be his Weapon, Engeta Zanu. It's the only thing that makes sense. But why are they fighting each other? Is it the reason why he was screaming in my mind?

'So, what do we have here?' the white man in an orange kimono murmured. He looked at her with glowing red eyes before returning his gaze to Neil. 'You called her here, didn't you? Bad idea, partner.'

She blinked and he was right in front of her. Shit! He moved so fast! With an adrenaline-boosted scream, she funneled her icy core into her hands, releasing a blast of ice into Neil's twin's face. Then she leapt away, putting distance between her and him. This isn't going to be easy.

'No, it won't,' Juka Reyno agreed.

"Pierce, Juka Reyno!" Shila cried out, finally forming her long bow in her grip. The snow-white bow had a frosty aura emanating from it, cooling the air around it. The bow itself was thin and narrow just like its wielder, looking like it could easily be snapped into pieces.

Gritting her teeth, Shila raised her bow and notched a few ice arrows along its drawstring. She then began firing multiple volleys of freezing arrows, unleashing a cloud of frozen fury upon Engeta Zanu. Before the dust cleared from her view, Neil launched himself into it before being promptly ejected from it.

He landed with a thud, and she thought she could feel that sensation rattle her bones even though it wasn't her that hit the ground. Strange. What is this sensation?

.

*Neil Agamon*

Confusion. That was what he sensed just as he struck the ground. He had to admit that he shared the sentiment, especially since he watched Shila unleash a frozen hell upon his out-of-control Weapon and Engeta Zanu simply shrugged it off. But where did he get that feeling from? It wasn't his own. He stole a glance at Shila. Her face told it all. It was her confusion he was feeling.

What the hell?

He jumped backwards when Engeta Zanu lunged for him, then proceeded to jump forwards in the hopes that he could catch his Weapon off guard. It failed miserably, his pale duplicate parrying both blades before spinning and kicking him in the stomach. He collapsed in a heap on the ground with the air knocked out of his lungs. Before Engeta Zanu could finish him off, a barrage of ice arrows struck the ground between them, cutting his duplicate off.

Engeta tore after Shila and the woman with her—must be Juka Reyno since she is using the same bow—and collided with the archer in a tangle of limbs. Shila was actually putting up a good melee fight despite being a ranged attacker, blasting him up close with bursts of ice magic from outstretched palms. But it didn't last too long. Engeta stabbed her in the stomach, forcing a pained wheeze to escape her lips.

Pain. So much pain. It hurts so bad! Neil rolled over, grabbing his own abdomen in response, like he had gotten stabbed too. What the hell is going on? Am I feeling what she is?

Before he could right himself, Engeta rolled him onto his back and stabbed a blade into his shoulder, pinning him to the ground. Far away, he thought he heard Shila scream in agony.

.

*Kisuke Urahara/Yretro Kosuka*

Kisuke stepped out of the shop after having already ushered everyone else back inside. His guests were downstairs in the training area beneath the store, staying alongside their friends that were going through the Change to become vampires and the one that got pulled along for the ride. It wasn't how it happened before, but fate was a funny thing and tended to follow the same tracks each time. He just hoped that Jonas completed his Change first, or things might get ugly.

Dismissing his worries, he looked at the black cat sitting on the porch. "Whatcha doin', Yoruichi? Huh? Checking the sky for rain?" He loved teasing his friend, and if he could do that and keep up the act that she was just a regular cat, then he would do it in a heartbeat.

"You can quit with the act now, Urahara. We both know what's really coming. The two of them are already here," the black cat responded in a male voice, turning her golden eyes his way.

She was right of course. He could sense them all the way over here. It wouldn't be long now before they came to take his most recent customer away. With an inward sigh, he asked, "Do you want to talk about this before or after your milk?"

.

*Jonas Mazeri*

Tasha Rein's plan was risky, but there was really no other choice. They had to do it together, otherwise the woman masquerading as his mother could escape the attack. The two of them shut everything else out except each other, delving deeper into their connection than they ever had in the past. For a few moments, they perfectly resonated.

He slipped behind his false mother's guard. Tasha Rein leapt right in front of her. And together, they unleashed a blade beam attack that blasted the three of them in one giant explosion. The silver-haired teen felt himself get thrown backwards and for several moments, all he saw was a bright white light.

Finally, the dust settled, and the light dissipated, revealing his mother standing right before him, offering him a hand to his feet. He eyed her suspiciously before giving her his hand, the red glowing in her eyes fading away to the normal dark blue.

'Congratulations. You succeeded in defeating me.'

Tasha Rein stumbled to Jonas's side, the Weapon recovering much faster than he had from their plan. He looked her over for a moment, noting her various injuries with a touch of concern. She sent him a pulse of reassurance along their connection, easing his worries as she confidently assured him of her wellbeing.

"What happened?" Jonas asked, deciding that he wanted to know what the hell had been going on first.

'The vampire change in your body that was started via the Weapon Kisi Ri was accelerated due to your arrival in this world. It was hastened even more so due to your exposure to Ichigo Kurosaki's out-of-control spiritual pressure upon your arrival.'

"So, my saving that guy caused all this?" Jonas cocked his head in confusion.

'Not exactly. Your Change here was different than it would have been if you had remained in your home world.'

"What? Why?"

'When Juto Sada stabbed you in your world with Kisi Ri, he essentially buried a portion of The Matriarch's power in your spirit. It was intended to force a vampiric transformation in a person not already born to be a vampire. And because you were here and not there, her influence was unable to reach you.'

"Umm, okay. What are you saying?" Confusion rattled his brain. So, this woman was saying that arriving in this world made him transform faster—a transformation that he and Neil were previously certain were happening to them although they didn't know how to stop it—and because he was in this world, this change occurred differently? What? Why? How?

The woman that looked like his mother giggled. 'Calm yourself. I shall answer all your questions. First off, I am not your mother, just as you suspected. I am the essence of Miseanu Meizerai, the first Rein vampire of your bloodline. I apologize for attacking you, but that was due in part to the Matriarch's residual power and the feral nature of the initial Change.'

"Rein vampire? As in Tasha Rein?" Jonas asked, wide eyed.

Miseanu smiled at him, pride shining in her dark blue eyes. 'Yes. The first vampires of the Dark Kingdom were my descendants. I took the last name Rein, to honor my Dragon partner that became my Magic Weapon.'

"So, I'm a vampire now?" Jonas questioned lowly, his heart sinking into his stomach. Vampires murdered his parents. And now he was suddenly one of them? A monster? No…

'You are NOT a monster!' Miseanu screeched, her dark blue eyes flashing crimson for a moment before settling. Jonas flinched, startled by the vehemence of which she made her claim. Tasha Rein placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, gently urging him to relax and simply listen. The Weapon was surprisingly calm given his unease and he faintly envied her.

They spoke for a long time. About how he was a Rein—Mazeri—vampire by blood. That his mother was actually a vampire, despite all the ways he had talked himself out of that explanation simply because he hadn't wanted to believe it. That Rein vampires were considered Primary Bloodlines, which explained his resistance to The Matriarch's power. It also explained why he so quickly left the feral state of the transformation—the bloodline was too strong to stay in darkness for very long.

He also learned that Tasha Rein's name meant 'Ultimate Darkness' and that if he tried hard enough, he could sift through her memories from before she was a Weapon and see the world through a Dragon's eyes.

Jonas discovered right then that he had a lot of knowledge buried in his subconscious, waiting for him to reach out and grab it. Something Miseanu had referred to as Blood Memories. In the same breath, she had warned him against delving into his blood memories too quickly for fear of him losing himself in his meanderings, but that he was able to do general searches if he found himself lacking in any abilities. To say that he was speechless was an understatement.

For a while, he and Tasha Rein just laid on the grass in his mind, staring up at the pitch-black sky above, the moon shining pale light down on them. Miseanu perched herself on the stone in the center of the clearing, peering at them from her position. For some time, they were all quiet, except for the racing of Jonas's thoughts as he tried to come to terms with what has happened and his new reality.

Suddenly, Miseanu stood up, staring intently at the moon.

"What's wrong?" Jonas asked, slowly rising to his feet beside her.

'Your friend is losing his battle. You may need to exert an influence over him to keep him from going feral.'

At the unfamiliar term, Jonas frowned before the knowledge passed into his mind. Almost like he had read it just now and was recalling it. Going feral. A term indicating that a new vampire was succumbing to the darkness of the Change and losing their mind to their bloodlust. A state where the new vamp was dangerous to themselves and others. The silver-haired teen shook his head. The information just flew into his mind with a fleeting thought, almost catching him off guard.

'You should go to him,' Tasha Rein prodded, helping her wielder to move forward.

Jonas nodded before willing himself to consciousness.

.

*Neil Agamon*

Things were not going very well. Shila was screaming in agony, her terrible, terrible pain and hurt and oh my goddess I feel like I'm dying driving waves of heat across his body even as he struggled in vain against the blade in his shoulder pinning him to the ground. He grunted, his hand slipping along the sharp edge, the blade biting into the skin and slicing it open. He hissed in pain, his palm bleeding profusely.

Engeta Zanu stared down at him from above. 'Not so tough now, are ya? Shall I finish it?' he whispered, red eyes glowing with delight.

This is going to hurt, but I think it might work. He spat in his doppelganger's face, causing his pale twin to wipe the spittle from his head with a disgusted grimace. Using that moment, he pressed his palms against the hilt of the sword in his shoulder and pushed his feet into the ground, driving his back into the floor he was on. With a roar, he forced the blade from his shoulder, palmed the handle, and proceeded to run his doppelganger through.

He buried the orange blade deep into his twin's stomach, coating the tangerine edge with crimson blood. Engeta Zanu grunted in pain, eyes flickering between glowing red and their normal hue. The glow renewed itself and he backhanded Neil across the fiery plain, sending the brown-haired teen rolling across the ground with a moan of pain.

Engeta Zanu pulled the blade from his stomach and eyed him with a combination of hatred and insanity, a furious firestorm of dark red and dark orange swirling around him.

I think I just pissed him off.

.

*Shila Mezere*

Every pain that Neil felt cut her like a knife. It took her several minutes to stop herself from screaming in agony, to put a barrier between what he was feeling and herself. But eventually, the archer did it. Although it didn't seem to help them any. Neil was still getting overwhelmed. At least, it didn't seem like his Weapon was paying her any mind.

Good. Maybe I can catch him off guard.

"Kogomosa, Juka Reyno!" Shila raised her essence aura and called for her Weapon's first Release, blasting the entire arena with her frozen power. Engeta Zanu stared at her with furious glowing red eyes as she pointed her bow directly at him and unleashed a maelstrom of ice arrows at the Weapon.

With a howl of rage, Engeta Zanu burned through her ice like it was nothing and flashed in front of her, burying his swords into her stomach all the way to the hilt.

Shila gasped in pain, feeling blood rise in her throat that made her cough. Engeta dropped her on the ground, and she panted in pain, feeling her power fall away from her grasp just before she lost consciousness.

.

*Jonas Mazeri*

After a few minutes of fumbling around, he managed to arrive in Neil's inner world, blocking a strike against the brown-haired dual wielder from what he could sense was the Firebrand's own Weapon. Engeta Zanu's essence ribbon was purely iridescent, the colors constantly shifting and shimmering as it danced to its own beat.

Shila's blue essence ribbon was cracked and barely moving, the silver-haired archer lying in a pool of her own blood some distance away. A woman was lying in a similar position beside her, her mostly white dress dyed red with blood. Based on what he sensed from her, he surmised that the other gal was Shila's Weapon, Juka Reyno.

Damn. Am I too late?

He blocked Engeta Zanu's repeated assault, trying to decide on what course of action he wanted to take. And while he had the knowledge in his mind now on how to influence Neil's transformation, it was easier said than done to access it. And the last thing he wanted to do was to accidently destroy Neil's Weapon in the process.

He gritted his teeth against Engeta's insistent blows, the strikes rattling the muscles of his arms. All the methods that flowed to his mind so far were of those belonging to the vampires with Mental Magic abilities. Which he did not use. He ducked under a swing and punched the pale man in the chest, forcing him backwards, before he continued forward, bringing Tasha Rein's blade down in front of him. The rampaging Magic Weapon blocked his strike and swept his feet out from under him.

Jonas barely rolled out of the way, giving Engeta Zanu a glancing blow across his arm, slicing open the orange kimono and revealing the snow-white arm beneath. Another memory flowed into his mind. A vampire controlled another vamp's change by biting them and infusing them with a portion of their own power by pressing down on them with essence aura until they submitted. A type of magic sharing that didn't involve a Magic Core.

The silver-haired teen groaned, hoping for another option. He wasn't too comfortable with the idea of biting one of his friends—regardless of the reason. Stubbornly, he continued sifting through the blood memories swelling in his mind. For his insistence on doing it another way, Engeta Zanu managed to get a lucky strike, slashing him across the chest.

Damnit. There really is no other good way, is there?

'Doesn't seem like it,' Tasha Rein sighed, feeling her wielder's reluctance across their connection.

With a groan, Jonas released a blade beam at Engeta Zanu before heading for Neil.

.

*Ichigo Kurosaki*

"Hey, Rukia! I've got your dinner here!" He opened his closet and found it to be empty. Damnit, why does she always have to disappear right at dinner time?

It wasn't the first time she had run off. And probably wouldn't be the last either. But it certainly was annoying. He knew his family was growing suspicious, but so far none of them had followed him when he left the table each night, with an extra plate of food meant for Rukia. And just like most nights he had done so, she was gone. Part of him wondered why he even bothered. If she couldn't be home during dinner time, then she obviously wasn't very hungry. But he couldn't do that to her. So, he kept bringing food upstairs for her.

Dammit, where the heck did you run off to this time?

.

*Rukia Kuchiki*

She gazed back towards the Kurosaki household with a mixture of sadness and fondness. Knowing that this time would probably be the last time she would ever see the place again. Her heart throbbed. Part of her wanted to tell Ichigo everything about how she felt. Why she felt the way she did. But she had already been a burden to him and brought him into contact with a world he should never have known about. She couldn't do it again. So, she left, with only a note on his table warning him of the dangers, imploring him to remain hidden and safe until the threat was gone.

Thank you for everything. For everything he did. And tried to do.

.

*Renji Abarai*

He pulled the visor up from his eyes, almost not believing what he was seeing. One of his oldest friends was right here before him, completely oblivious to his presence. And that of his captain right beside him. She had been missing for so long that some presumed her dead. He had leapt at the opportunity to track her down and bring her back safe and sound. But still…

"I didn't think we would actually find her in a Gigai. Yes, Rukia Kuchiki. We've finally found you."

He came as the lieutenant of Squad Six. And his captain, Byakuya Kuchiki, Rukia's older brother, had traveled here too. The red head couldn't believe what he was seeing. She was in a gigai, and if what he was detecting with the visor and sensing for himself was true, then her powers were nearly gone. But…but that would mean…

She couldn't have…

Terminology

My Universe:

Beasts:

Dark Severiin: think of a Deviljho from Monster Hunter when you think of this thing. Physically, it is a bit different, but I am using a lot of comparisons to describe characters and things. This is the thing I am vaguely describing at the beginning of the chapter that Jonas and his friends were fighting. The characters from my story are being pulled from their timeline during the Dark Severiin fight in Arc 1 of Chronicles of Seraphia (the book series I am working on).

.

.

Magic (General):

Magic Core: the core of an individual's magical ability. No Magic Core means that the person cannot wield Magic AT ALL.

.

Magic Class: One of ten major classifications of various magics.

.

Magic Subclass: one of several magics that make up a magic class.

.

Primary Wavelength: there are many different levels of magical communication. The space in an individual's mind directly below the Weapon Wavelength is this layer where communication through Blood Imprints, Dragon Imprints and Plant Summons exist.

.

Weapon Wavelength: the layer in a person's mind near the top of their consciousness where a Magic Weapon of some sort communicates with their wielder. This is the level Engeta Zanu, Tasha Rein, and the other Weapons communicate on.

.

.

Magic (Weapons):

Magic Weapon: a magical Weapon bound to an individual from birth. Magic Weapons are created from Weapon Spirits that choose a child as it is born and meld with the newborn's spirit to become their Magic Weapon later in life. Weapon Spirits are reincarnated whenever they choose a new wielder (after they are separated from their current one). Typically wielded only by living people in either the Light World or the Dark World. Used to send spirits on to the realms.

.

Weapon Magic Wielder: Weapon Magic Wielders are able to manipulate the Magic Essence in their bodies to summon powerful Weapons and communicate with the Weapon Essences to gain new powers and abilities. If one can only use Weapon Magic, then they are also referred to as Guardians (this term can also be used for someone that uses a Spirit Weapon or Hell Weapon if the Weapon is the only magical ability they have).

.

.

Weapon Spirit/Weapon Essence: the personality and appearance of a Magic or Spirit Weapon within and beyond the wielder's inner world. Each one has a unique appearance and powers. They choose to bind to an individual's spirit (typically at birth) and help to shape their wielder's development. In the end, it is hard (sometimes) to distinguish the two from each other (what is the natural state of the wielder and what part of the wielder's personality and traits were influenced by the Weapon kind of question).

.

Tasha Rein: Jonas's Magic Weapon.

Humanoid Form: 5'5". Long black and silver hair and black eyes. She wore a black, form-fitting kimono with dark blue accents along the outer edges and dark blue cloth on the inside. Dark blue threads held it all together. While the body of the kimono was form-fitting, the arms and legs had plenty of room and were quite baggy.

Lore: Means 'Ultimate Darkness/The Black Dragon'

.

Engeta Zanu: Neil Agamon's Magic Weapon.

Humanoid Form: looks like Neil except he is all white. Wears a dark orange kimono with a crimson inner liner and dark red stitches. Wears a pair of baggy red pants that flare at his feet with matching crimson socks slipped into a basic flat black sandal. There is a red flame design etched into the bottom of the robe's top half.

Lore: Engeta Zanu also means Twin Flickering Flames. The idea that a flame reflects the spirit of a person (hence why he is Neil's duplicate), with different colors indicating different moods and the color white representing the complete balance of all that power (since it is said that white is the conglomeration of all color whereas black is the absence of color). Engeta Zanu is a pair of dual long swords.

.

Kisi Ri: Magic Weapon belonging to The Matriarch and, by extension, the feral vampires under her control.

Lore: functions by inserting vampire magical abilities into a person's Magic Core, thus transforming them into a vampire. High success rate.

.

Juka Reyno: Shila Mezere's Magic Weapon.

Humanoid Form: 5'4". Long white hair tossed behind her head in gentle curls flowing to the center of her back. Stunned bright blue eyes. Wears a floor-length white and blue dress that shimmered as she walked, now streaked with lines of red and black.

.

.

Weapon Release (Weapon State): Similar in nature to a Shikai or Bankai release. However, there are 10 Mortal Tier Releases (as opposed to the 2 levels that Soul Reapers can use).

.

Kogomosa/Shikai: The 1st Weapon Release in the Mortal Tier of Weapon Releases. Equivalent to Shikai state, with fighters on average becoming twice as strong as their initial summon state. X2 Initial Summon.

.

.

Magic Weapon Classes: Magic Weapons have classes which determine how exactly they are used, along with describing total size of the Weapons etc. Basically, a dual longsword class is different than a dual short sword class and indicates the length of the blades. There are also dual classes which will be explained later.

Weapons are Melee (up close), Ranged (far away), Defensive (which falls under the melee class), or Dual Form (two different types of weapons that are part of one weapon. Think of the weapons from Bloodborne and how almost every single one had 2 forms.)

.

Sword Lengths- Daggers are between 5 to 10 inches long. Short swords are between 10 and 18 inches long. Long swords are between 18 and 30 inches long. Greatswords are between 30 and 48 inches long. Ultra greatswords are between 48 and 72 inches long.

Curved swords mean that the flat side of the blade (the part that is not sharp) is curved, along with the bladed edge. Regular swords are straight here, regardless of whether the blade itself arcs into a curve. (for a comparison, Zangetsu would be considered an Ultra Greatsword class.)

Weapon Summon Spell: each Magic Weapon has a specific phrase or word that allows their wielder to bring them into the world (summon their weapon). This is similar to the phrase used by a soul reaper to awaken their zanpakuto to Shikai.

Initial Summon: The basic summon and first form of a Magic Weapon. Each Initial Summon has an activation spell (summoning spell) to summon the Weapon into existence.

.

Kisi Ri summon spell: Turn Them

.

Engeta Zanu summon spell: Burn

.

Tasha Rein summon spell: Descend

.

Juka Reyno summon spell: Pierce

.

.

Weapon Dispel Spell: each Magic Weapon has a specific phrase or word that allows their wielder to disperse the magic essence forming their weapon, allowing it to disappear (dispel their weapon). Currently, there is no known way for a soul reaper to do something like this, since their zanpakuto is a physical creation and not summoned out of reishi.

.

Tasha Rein dispel spell: Disappear

.

.

Magic (Incantations):

Magic (Spellcaster):

Magic (Spiritual):

Magic (Elemental Spirit):

.

.

Vampire Specific:

Blood Imprint: a type of magical connection through blood. Made between a vampire and someone else. On the Primary Wavelength.

.

The Change: the process of transforming into a vampire.

.

Primary Bloodline: Bloodlines named after and descended directly from the vampire offspring of those that wielded the 10 Dragon Champion Weapons in ancient times. They are well known for their mastery of their particular Magic Class.

.

Secondary Bloodline: Bloodlines named after the specific matings of the Primary Bloodlines. Known for their ability to wield two Magic Classes related to their names.

.

Tertiary Bloodline (trash bloodline): unstable bloodlines. Too numerous and diverse to be able to name them all. Not known for anything special. Fall to feral status easier because of their magical instability.

.

Blood Memories (genetic memories): Primary Bloodlines and Secondary Bloodlines pass on genetic memories and abilities through their blood, gifting subsequent generations with the same skills and memories of days long past. (this is possible even though magical ability isn't technically passed on this way.)

.

Rein/Mazeri Vampires: Descended from Miseanu Meizerai/Rein. They are masters of the Dark Magic Class and specialize in stealth, summoning, and raising the dead to fight again (necromancy). Jonas's particular bloodline is spawned from Bequaki Mazeri, who was once known as Bequaki Rein, but she changed her name and began the Mazeri bloodline when she disagreed with the other primary vampire bloodlines and their decision to attack the werewolves.

.

.

Lore:

When a vampire first begins The Change, they have a brief period where they 'go feral' (i.e. go insane, lose themselves to bloodlust and instincts, etc.). Most vampires turn back toward the light shortly after their body full changes, but not all. There is a higher chance of someone with a tertiary/trash bloodline of staying feral than someone belonging to a primary or secondary bloodline.

.

In the canon storyline, the Matriarch, while powerful, is simply a strong Mental Magic user from a tertiary bloodline. In fact, her Weapon, Kisi Ri, should work far better than it does in controlling her victims, but it doesn't because of her lineage. Because my characters are now in the Bleach universe with no ready means of returning home, they are cut off from the majority of her mental influence. Therefore, Jonas was able to defeat the portion of her power struggling for dominance easily whereas Neil (and by extension, Shila) had to struggle and required Jonas's aid.

Humanoid Characters:

Jonas Mazeri: main character in Chronicles of Seraphia. short, spiky silver hair. Dark blue eyes. 5'7". Skinny and toned. 16 years old. Wields Tasha Rein.

.

Neil Agamon- 5'7". Short and straight brown hair. Brown eyes. He appears average build with clothes on but is physically fit. 16 years old. Wields Engeta Zanu.

.

Shila Mezere- 5'4". Long silver hair that reaches between her shoulder blades. Light blue eyes. Thin. 16 years old. Wields Juka Reyno. Uses Ice Subclass Magic.

.

Casey Urdoni- 5'4". Long black hair. Dark blue eyes so dark they are almost black. Impassive face. 15 years old. Wields ?

.

Kienan Urdoni- 5'8". Short black hair. Black eyes. 16 years old. Wields ?

.

Michael Koto- 5'7". Brown eyes. Short light blonde hair. 16 years old. Wields ?

.

Sheila Emetere- ?

.

Sirta Mazeri- 5'5". Long silver hair. Dark blue eyes. Jonas's mother. (deceased).

.

Miseanu Meizerai/Rein: looks just like Sirta Mazeri (except maybe a little more muscular. Long silver hair. Dark blue eyes.

.

Extra Notes/General Seraphia Worldbuilding:

Jonas Mazeri's appearance: So, I never fully describe exactly what his face (or anyone else's face really) in my universe looks like. I give the basic hair and eye color, heights, and builds but I leave the faces open to the imagination (unless there is a specific scar I wish to address). So, I thought, how cool would it be if Jonas looked like Ichigo? (guess you can figure out which character I like the most, eh?)

.

Light World/Dark World: two different worlds that exist as copies of each other. This is where all life lives before it dies. (think of them like the World of the Living in Bleach.)

.

Realms: There are actually 12 realms where spirits live after life. 10 of them exist where their specific magics are prominent (and each of these 10 have a light side and a dark side to them). Then, there is Hell (realm of Sinners). Finally, there is the Otherlands (which is the realm of ALL Weapon Spirits).

.

Betweenlands: The dimension that keeps all the realms and the worlds connected. (kind of like the Dangai).

.

In my universe, all things give off essence ribbons. Everything has a small amount of magic essence which then strongly or weakly gives off an aura of power. So, Jonas has the ability to see these ribbons (all ribbons) and since there aren't that many Essence Ribbons in this universe (because the only ones currently belong to him and his friends), it is far easier for him to search for his missing friend this way.

.

In my universe, before the kids got sent to the Bleach universe, both Neil and Jonas were attacked by vampires under someone's control named The Matriarch. The Matriarch is a person with the Magic Weapon, Kisi Ri, and she can use it to transform people into vampires. Those that she initiates the change with, can use her Weapon to varying degrees.

Bleach Universe:

Magic:

Kido: The over-arching classification of spells used by soul reapers. Divided into Bakudo, Hado, or Kaido.

.

Bakudo Spells: Way of Binding. Spells used to restrain or restrict movement or spells.

.

Bakudo #1 Sai: a weak binding kido spell that forces the target's hands behind their back.

.

Bakudo #61: Rikujokoro: Six-Rod Light Restraint.

.

Inemuri: Forced Slumber spell. User holds their hand in front of their victim's face, the victim's pupils dilate several times before they pass out.

.

Hakufuku: White Concealment: a spell that causes the target to see the illusion of purple cherry blossoms falling around them, sometimes also along with the smell of sweet flowers. Then their vision blurs and their mind becomes disoriented and confused before they fall unconscious. Target has an unclear memory once they awaken.

.

Tanma Otoshi: Time-Out Drop. The kido spell that Shinji used to knock Ichigo unconscious before his struggle with his inner hollow with the visoreds.

.

.

Hado Spells: Way of Destruction. Spells used to inflict damage.

.

Kaido: Healing Spiritual Arts. The spells and abilities used by soul reapers to heal injuries.

.

Quincy Specific:

Quincy: A human that can manipulate spirit particles in the air to form a bow and arrow. When they kill hollows, they destroy their souls.

.

Soul Reaper Specific:

Gigai: an artificial body

.

Soul Reaper (Death God/Shinigami): A dead spirit that guides lost souls to the afterlife via Konso.

.

Zanpakuto (Soul Cutter): a weapon born from a soul reaper's soul. The fragment of their soul that is forged for battle.

.

Shikai: the first true release of a zanpakuto. Considered the second form of a zanpakuto since all normal soul reapers wield sealed swords.

.

Release Shikai: To release a zanpakuto to Shikai in the bleach universe, each of them has a unique call phrase that causes the sword to transform into its shikai release.

.

Seal Zanpakuto: Soul Reapers can seal their zanpakuto after releasing it and finishing their battle. Those wielding Magic Weapons can do the same thing.

.

Bankai: the second and final release of a zanpakuto. Considered the third form of a zanpakuto since all normal soul reapers wield sealed swords. The achievement of Bankai can increase a fighter's power by 5 to 10 times and oftentimes takes up to 10 years to master its usage.

.

Konso: Soul Burial. Allows a Whole to pass onto the Soul Society.

.

Hollow Specific:

Hollow: A spirit being that ate out its own heart in its suffering and one that continues searching for spirit energy and souls to relieve its never-ending hunger and desire to fulfill the emptiness of its existence.

(You all should read 'On the precipice of defeat' by MissFlesh. Holy crap! I loved the unique perspective of a Hollow that this writer gives. So many fanfictions skip over the gruesome aspects of existing as a hollow and portray it like some sort of glamorous existence that downplays how horrible being a hollow really is (they romanticize it, not that I am saying the other stories are bad by any stretch. They aren't, but they don't fully immerse you in the terrible state of being a hollow like this fanfiction does) and this author got into the nitty-gritty of life as a hollow and truly captured how bad life as one is. Truly a magnificent read and gives a whole new perspective of life as a monster.) It isn't completed and I don't think it ever will be, but there is plenty of story here to sink your teeth into that it fully captures the hopelessness of that life.

.

Menos Grande: A classification of the three most-powerful forms that hollows can take. Gillian is the lowest. Adjuchas is the middle. Vasto Lorde is the highest.

.

Gillian: that monster hollow that Ichigo and Uryu fought at the beginning. The lowest of the class of Menos Grande hollows.

.

Hybrid (Visored/Arrancar) Specific:

.

Characters:

Ichigo Kurosaki: Main character for Bleach. Wields the zanpakuto, Zangetsu.

.

Uryu Ishida: He is a Quincy. Calls himself the Last Quincy.

.

Rukia Kuchiki: The Soul Reaper that gave Ichigo his soul reaper powers.

.

Tessai Tsukabishi: an employee of Urahara Shop and a childhood friend of Kisuke and Yoruichi. He is also the former Kido Commander in the Gotei 13.

.

Extra Notes/General Bleach Worldbuilding:

Hueco Mundo: The world of the Hollows.

.

Soul Society: the place where spirits pass onto (heaven).

.

World of the Living: Earth. Where humans live out their lives and die.

Urahara Shop: the candy store belonging to Kisuke Urahara. Based in the World of the Living. Home to Kisuke, Tessai, Jinta, and Ururu.

Close Similarities/Similar Skills:

Magic Weapon/Zanpakuto/Spirit Weapon: Magic Weapons and Spiritual Magic Weapons are similar to zanpakuto in that they are Weapons unique to an individual. However, their origins are different.

X2 Initial Summon.

.

Essence Ribbon/Spirit Ribbon: In Bleach, Spirit Ribbons turn red if a person is a soul reaper, otherwise they are white. This is how Uryu said that he figured out about Ichigo and Rukia. They are visible rays of spirit energy.

In my universe, Essence Ribbons change color and pattern based on the magical abilities the person has demonstrated to be capable of using. They can also have auras. They are visible rays of magic energy and get their name from magic's base term: Magic Essence.

In this fanfiction, one can detect how someone is feeling (emotionally or physically) by touching their ribbon. This is a more advanced technique than simply feeling someone's pressure/aura.

.

Divine Sight/Seeing Spirit Ribbons: In Bleach, Rukia states that the ability to see Spirit Ribbons (rays of spirit energy) is something that only high-ranking soul reapers can use.

Divine Sight is the special ability to see Essence Ribbons.

.

Essence Aura/Spiritual Pressure (Reiatsu): In Bleach, Spiritual Pressure is the pressure that a person's spiritual power (Reiryoku) exerts (described like reiryoku output).

Essence Aura is the pressure that a person's magical power exerts. It gets its name from magic's base term: Magic Essence.

In this fanfiction, one can detect how someone is feeling (emotionally or physically) by feeling their aura. This is typically a beginner technique, but the more advanced sensing requirements put it more in the intermediate category.

.

Energy/Spiritual Power (Reiryoku): In Bleach, a person's spiritual power/spiritual energy is referred to as Reiryoku. It is their personal wellspring of power that is all their own. Each person has a certain amount and a limit they cannot surpass.

In my universe, this is referred to as Energy. In my universe, Energy can be divided into 2 categories: Magic Energy and Spirit Energy (with Spirit Energy being a mere subset of Magic Energy).

In this fanfiction, when one's spiritual power/energy is exhausted, the person collapses from lack of remaining energy.

.

Magic Essence/Reishi (spiritual matter): In Bleach, reishi is what makes up objects in Soul Society and Hueco Mundo. The concentrations there are higher because they are the two spirit worlds of Bleach although some does exist in the World of the Living.

Magic Essence: the basis of ALL magical happenings in my universe. My entire world is formed from Magic Essence (which broken down is called Essence Elements, which we won't touch on until much later). Therefore, nearly all magic skills have some part of their name coming from one of these two words.

.

Essence Elements/Atoms (Kishi): Kishi is like the World of the Living version of Reishi and makes up nearly all objects in the World of the Living and is a term to describe atoms as a whole.

Essence Elements are my universe's version of protons, neutrons, and electrons. The term as a whole can be used interchangeably with magic essence while referring to a single element cannot. They are further broken down into Sub-Elemental Essences (which are basically subatomic).

.

Inner World/Mindscape/Realm of the Zanpakuto: this definition is basically identical between universes. Regardless of what phrase one wants to use, they all mean the same thing. Inner World. Inner Mind. Mindscape. Landscape of the Mind. Realm of the Weapon Spirit. Realm of the Zanpakuto. Literally all refers to the place in a wielder's mind where the Weapon resides and where they go to commune directly with the Weapon that is a part of them.

.

Magic Weapon Auto-Dispel/Zanpakuto Auto-Seal: Just like how zanpakutos revert back to their sealed state when their wielder is knocked unconscious, a similar thing happens when a Magic Weapon Wielder is knocked unconscious (their Weapon dispels).

.

Yretro Kosuka- is Kisuke Urahara.

.

Final Notes:

I want to thank Andygoesrawr from Reddit for the amazing breakdown of the differences between the terms Reishi, Reiryoku, and Reiatsu that he posted nearly 8 years ago on the Reddit page: The Difference between Reishi, Reiryoku and Reiatsu. He also covered the concept of Kishi. I found this page and read it to make sure I wasn't messing up the distinction between the three too badly (turns out that I really was and, in my confusion over the terms when I was laying the foundation for the magic in my world, I ended up doing the same thing as this here was. Go figure).

.

Also, I am editing how I am doing the terminology, etc. and how it will all be organized. Hopefully, it is better than previously. I am also planning on including all the definitions etc. at the end of the chapters (as opposed to stating which chapter I defined them at the beginning of the chapter and pushing off the start of the story each time).

.

I know I stated that Kisuke is Yretro from my universe. So, based on the above information, one would be correct in believing that he should have an Essence Ribbon. However, the reason why this is not true is because he was essentially reborn in the Bleach universe. Therefore, he follows their natural laws not mine.

.

And the people in my world do not use glasses. This is why Jonas has no clue what they are.

.

I am also aware that I am repeating the terms, etc. at the end of the chapters, but I felt it would be easier on the reader than if they had to search a different chapter each time they wanted a refresher.

.

I have to say that I love the Bleach Wiki. Here's a shout of thanks to everyone that made that website into the brilliant resource that it is. I would never remember all the specific spells otherwise.

.

I haven't forgotten the other Bleach characters, don't worry. Soon, the 'Invade Seireitei' arc will happen and everyone will get their chance in the spotlight.

.

Hope you enjoyed! Please review and let me know what you all think! Thanks for reading!
