*Chapter 10: Shattered Shaft. Day 3*
.
*Ichigo Kurosaki*
Ichigo panted in pain, gasping through the searing agony and the throbbing cold tearing itself through his chest. With a sigh of relief, he watched as the mouths disappeared and his chain of fate shrunk back down to normal. The white ribbon with a light gray glow finished shriveling like burnt cloth, the edges turning black over time. The pain from both filaments dangling from his chest made it nearly impossible to move, paralyzing him with agony during the periods of encroachment.
The end of his suffering this time around marked the end of the fifth encroachment. There seemed to be a cycle to it all, for the chains would grow mouths and chomp away for a few minutes before returning to sleep for several hours. And the ribbon—and that was the term he was going to use for it since that's how it looked—burnt and shriveled during the same time period, the white filament curling and turning black as time went on. In fact, nearly half the white was gone now, shriveled black as if burnt even though it never caught on fire.
Gathering himself up the best he could without the use of his arms, he struggled to his knees. The goal was to climb out of this pit, and he could only move while the chains were sleeping. Gasping, he lowered himself into a running stance and charged at the wall of the pit, running as fast as he could make himself move along the vertical surface. Eventually, and just like every other time he had tried, he slipped and fell back down, landing on his back, the impact knocking the breath from his lungs.
As he gasped for air, the physical effort after such searing pain exhausting him, he simply allowed himself to lay there, trying to think of another strategy to get himself out. He stared up the tall walls. This would be so much easier using my hands.
"Hey you!" Ichigo cocked his head. Jinta was yelling down at him, the red-headed boy shouting for his attention. "Hungry yet?"
What the hell? "Of course not!" Ichigo snapped back irritably. What kind of stupid question is that? "I'm a disembodied soul! How could I be hungry?" His chest twinged painfully with a sharp piercing cold, stopping the breath in his lungs as he struggled to cope, the sensation oftentimes catching him off guard and forcing himself to simply breathe through the pain until it ceased.
As he struggled not to whimper in pain from the icy tendrils wrapping his body and pulsing from his heart, Jinta continued ominously, "That's good. I'll let you in on something… If you get hungry, it's a bad sign. It means that you're about to become a hollow." Ichigo felt his eyes widen with worry, apprehension racing up his spine even as the stabbing cold feeling slowly abated.
"But if you're thirsty, that's okay. Drink some of my spit."
Ichigo growled in annoyance, "You little…!" Then it began to splatter on his face, covering him in their drool. This is so gross… "You nasty little brats! When I get my hand free, I'll…! It's hitting me! Stop! I'll kick your scrawny butts! Ahh! Please!"
Eventually the two little shits stopped drooling on him, Jinta having recruited Ururu to aid him in being nasty and annoying. And as he laid there deep in the pit, he came to a chilling realization. Damn. I can't climb out… And it wasn't being defeatist. Nor was it him giving up. It was a simple fact that he couldn't scale a nearly fifty-foot vertical wall without the use of his hands or other climbing equipment. It was a matter of simple physics. Eventually, his forward momentum would slow until gravity brought him back down to the bottom of the pit. Dammit…
As the time passed, he felt a sensation building along his throat. A need he couldn't explain. For a brief period of time, Ichigo panicked, worried that maybe it was hunger, and he was turning into a hollow. But it wasn't the twisting knot he recognized hunger to be. It was more… a thirst. He wet his lips and swallowed, feeling somehow that his own saliva wasn't thick enough. Didn't taste like anything. And he needed something more. Something else.
Tessai hadn't moved from his place in the shadows, continuing to maintain the spell that bound his arms behind him. But the man had started to glow to his eyes, a faint pulsing that beckoned to him with need. Frowning, Ichigo concentrated and closed his eyes. The pulsing still continued, and the orange-haired teen realized that he could track it even with his eyes closed. But he still couldn't place why it seemed so important. Why it called to him.
He glanced back toward the light above with a sigh, deciding to figure out whatever that was later. For now, he had to get out of here. But how? How long have I been down here? I can't tell. He gazed over the rock walls of the pit, the rough edges smoothing the further away they were. He had tried to scale the wall by running straight up it, but that idea hadn't worked. How am I supposed to climb out of here? I can't just give up here. I need to save Rukia!
.
Sometime later, Jinta ran down the wall, carrying a platter and greeting, "Hey!" As he approached, cradling the tray of food, Ichigo eyed him, noticing the same kind of pulsing and light surrounding the red head—although it wasn't nearly as strong as the aura around Tessai. Finally, the young boy stopped with a wicked grin on his face. "I brought you some food. You must be getting hungry by now."
"Huh? I am not hungry," Ichigo retorted. It was true, he hadn't felt his stomach clench once the entire time he was down here. But he had felt a different need and gazed thoughtfully at the platter of food. I wonder if anything on there will quench my thirst? "Look," he demanded, gesturing with his head toward the chain and ribbon, "I still have plenty of my chain of fate left."
"Hmm," Jinta remarked with a frown, "Well, that can't be helped." He set the tray down and Ichigo noted with irritation that there wasn't anything he could drink, nor could he get at the juices without the use of his hands. Damn little shit. "You lose track of time down in this hole."
"Time?" Ichigo questioned with a raised brow.
"I'll tell you two things," Jinta responded ominously. "One, you've been in the Shattered Shaft for exactly seventy hours. Souls usually start going hollow about now." Ichigo's eyes widened. It's been seventy hours?! No way! "And two, the last encroachment is nothing like the other ones." It filled his stomach with dread, a spiraling pool of unease that wrapped itself around his spine.
And with the red head's proclamation came the return of the searing agony that indicated another encroachment. But this time…this time all of the chains turned into mouths, feasting and biting and devouring each other. They writhed and twisted in desperate hunger, chomping in vicious delight. And the white ribbon cracked and shriveled, the light gray aura shifting between light gray and black.
And it also became enveloped in a red aura, burning crimson around the gray and black.
Ichigo screamed desperately. "Stop! All of you! Stop!"
But they didn't, continuing heedless of his instructions, chomping and biting until they reached his chest, tearing away the emblem that sat in the middle, revealing a hole. For a split second, he gazed at it in confusion. But then something bubbled up from his throat. A white liquid that streamed from his mouth and eyes, wrapping around his face as the pain came again, so much worse than before, forcing him to scream in agony as a mask began hardening over his face.
.
*Jonas Mazeri*
For three days, they had all trained to learn how to control their powers—and for some of them, their new abilities. Everything he thought he knew and understood seemed to get turned on its head. For one thing, he had always thought that a person could only ever wield a single Magic Weapon. An assumption, he supposed, that had no basis in any facts he had been taught, just an observation he had noted. And even Shila and Michael, the two most well-read out of all of them, had been objecting to Neil's earlier declaration, claiming that it wasn't possible.
But somehow it was. Neil could summon Shila's Weapon. And Shila could summon Neil's. And while their control over each other's Weapons wasn't good, it was better than before. The biggest drawback seemed to be Energy. While either Weapon could be summoned and wielded by the other at the same time—and he should know since he was their pincushion for a while—having two copies of the same Weapon summoned at a time caused the original owner of said Weapon to lose their Energy quickly. Kisuke stated that it was because both versions of the summoned Weapon drew their power from the original owner, which made sense if he thought about it. He could feel the power flowing between them shift as they alternated Weapons, the channels of Energy pulsing and raging as they did.
The surprising fact—at least to him and anyone that stopped to think for a minute—was how well a fire Weapon and an ice Weapon worked together. But while Engeta Zanu was hot, it didn't evaporate all the water in an area, simply causing everyone in the vicinity to sweat profusely. Which fed Juka Reyno's ice because Shila could pull and freeze the water and launch it back at them. Jonas panted as he caught his breath, the three of them taking a few minutes to relax before they started sparring again.
The three of them didn't need to speak using words anymore, although they often did so not to make the others feel left out. As Jonas sprawled out on the rocky ground of the underground training area, he let himself relax and bask in the mental communications passing between them. During the three days, he had gotten good at separating himself from them while still detecting their thoughts and feelings. It was nice to finally have that aspect of his abilities ironed out, the thought of drowning under the weight of their minds no longer a pressing concern. Oh, he could still see it happening if he didn't maintain his portion of their connection, but now it didn't seem so imminent. Now, it simply was there but not overbearing.
He sighed and sat up, catching a glimpse of Jinta darting into the pit. Jonas nearly rolled his eyes, wondering if the red head was going to be antagonizing his twin again, before he stood with a sudden realization.
The three days were almost up. And Ichigo had yet to emerge from the pit.
As he ambled over, trying to appear nonchalant despite a small tendril of worry that twisted along his spine, a large explosion of spiritual pressure and essence aura burst from the pit, followed quickly by Jinta scrambling over the side, a panicked expression on his face.
"Check it out! He's turning into a hollow!"
Jonas approached as Ururu stretched out her arm and Kisuke put a hand on her shoulder, halting whatever the little girl was going to do.
"Look at him. Closely," he instructed. The two kids eyed Ichigo warily as even Jonas peeked over the edge. What he saw was Ichigo, surrounded by swirling spirit energy and essence aura that pulsed around him ominously. His chain of fate was gone, leaving nothing but a hole in his chest. And his essence ribbon was gone too, the fragments of it twisting and spiraling around him. What Jonas saw made him frown, confused.
The ribbon fragments spinning around his twin glowed three different colors. Light Gray. Black. And Red. Light gray, he knew belonged to Shini—Light Spirits. And Red belonged to vampires. But he wasn't sure what to make of the Black, other than that it felt like an opposite to the Shini's shining light. What does the black aura mean?
"Ordinarily," Kisuke explained, "When a Whole becomes a Hollow, the spiritual body bursts into pieces and rearranges itself. But he's not following the usual pattern. The mask is coalescing while his body is still a Whole. That's a sign of his resistance." Jonas eyed his orange-haired counterpart with concern. "There's still a remote chance that he can become a soul reaper in time. Let's wait a bit longer…until his transformation is complete." The blonde paused before murmuring, "Just a bit longer."
.
*Ichigo Kurosaki*
'Can you hear me, Ichigo?' a deep voice echoed through his mind, and he forced himself to open his eyes.
Ichigo wasn't sure what he should have expected, but he was pretty certain that this wasn't it. He was laying on the side of a skyscraper, a dark sky stretched above him. Two white moons shined down from above, the black canvas pock-marked with thousands of twinkling stars. Opposite the moons and dipped deep into the horizon was the sun, glowing red and casting shadows across the tall city stretched around him.
Sitting up, he glanced around. Where am I? There was just enough light to see his surroundings and part of the city around him, the deep black shadows only blanketing the far reaches of his sight. It was unlike anywhere he had ever seen, including Karakura town, despite the resemblance to his hometown in the city sprawled around him.
'Over here.' The deep voice requested, and he twisted around to look.
There was a man there, dressed in black with long black hair and shades covering his eyes. He stood on a pole some distance from him, the dark tone of his outfit nearly blending into the shadows. Stubble stretched across his chin, making him appear like an older man.
"Who are you?" Ichigo asked, gazing at the old man curiously. He had never seen such a person before. Or…at least…he didn't think he had. It was no surprise that he had a hard time remembering names and faces, but honestly, he just didn't care to recall all the numerous people he had interacted with over the years. All the jerks and the bullies that he fought with weren't worth remembering. And not many other people stood out to him or were his friend.
'Who am I? Don't you know? It's me…'
Ichigo frowned. "I didn't catch that." He couldn't hear the man's name. It was like it was blocked or distorted before it reached his ears. That's strange. Why would I be able to hear everything else except his name?
'Oh. It still can't reach you…how very sad. How many times do I have to shout for my voice to reach you? There's no one in this world that knows me…better than you do.'
Ichigo furrowed his brow, eyeing the old man. "What are you talking about? Sorry, but I don't have any friends who float." What the hell does he mean that I know him better than anyone else? Who says something like that? People speaking in riddles to him drove him insane. Why couldn't people just say exactly what they meant? He had looked away for just a second and glanced back, but suddenly, his entire perspective seemed to change.
The man was hovering above him, staring down at him. "Hey! How did you…" I was sure I was just sitting there. What the hell happened? The man was just floating there. In mid-air. Without a care in the world.
'How strange. How can you sit in a place like that?'
What? Then Ichigo was falling. A hurried glance over his shoulder revealed that the ground was behind him now and he was now hurtling towards it with deadly purpose. There's no way I can survive such a fall from so high! Once again, he screamed, the wind streaming past him as his speed picked up. His heart rate spiked, adrenaline pumping into his muscles even though they had nothing to slow his descent with. Shit!
'Screaming like a woman. Such composure. Very promising!' If Ichigo hadn't been falling, then maybe he would have noticed the amusement in the old man's voice, flowing into him like it was his own sensation. But instead, he couldn't hear the inflection in the man's tone as the air buffeted his ears. 'Don't worry! Soul reapers preside over all spiritual phenomena, even death!'
"But I'm not a Soul Reaper right now!" Ichigo retorted, trying to steady himself mentally as the ground no doubt raced toward him. He refused to look back at it. Refused to acknowledge his looming demise. He wasn't about to give up. Not now. Not when he was so close to getting his powers back. He couldn't fail. Not if he wanted to save Rukia.
And without realizing it, he had stopped screaming in terror.
'Quite true! See all this reishi floating in the atmosphere?' The old man had a spirit particle in his hand, the fragment glowing blue in his grasp. 'Just solidify them beneath your feet to check your fall!' Ichigo looked at him like he was crazy. Just how the hell am I supposed to do that? Solidify reishi? He didn't have that kind of control!
'Are you deaf, man?!' The old man screeched. 'Think back! As a soul reaper, you were able to unconsciously gain traction on the very air itself.' And then Ichigo remembered. The night he was fighting Orihime's dead brother. He had been knocked from the house and scrambled for purchase to keep from flying through the sky. But to do it again? How? It was instinctual. Desperate.
'Hear me!' the old man demanded and Ichigo turned to look at him once more. 'The soul reaper powers that Byakuya Kuchiki removed from you were only those given to you by Rukia!'
"What?" What the hell was this old man getting at? Did this have something to do with him controlling spirit particles?
'Of course…that's all he was interested in. He thought that once they were gone that would be the end of you. But he was careless! He overlooked your own soul reaper powers!'
Ichigo's eyes widened. What?! "My own…soul reaper powers? You mean…I have soul reaper powers of my own?"
The old man nodded. 'Yes. Rukia's powers awakened your own! They lay hidden deep in your soul at the time of Byakuya Kuchiki's attack and they are still there. Now...find them.' Ichigo watched, stunned, as the skyscraper he was once on began to disintegrate, dropping dozens of white boxes around them, leaving nothing but the moons and the black star-filled sky in its wake. 'If there was ever a time to find your hidden soul reaper powers…that time is now. This world is falling apart. See the boxes raining down around us? Your powers are in one of them. Find it!'
Ichigo saw all of them and exclaimed, "Are you kidding?! There are thousands of boxes…"
'No excuses,' the old man snapped. 'There's no time.' Was that desperation Ichigo was hearing? 'If you don't find the right box before this world disintegrates…you will become a hollow!'
Ichigo hit a break in the cement, plunging deep into a watery expanse that stretched around him, smothering him with darkness. But somehow, there was light here, just enough to somewhat see. What am I supposed to do? He pondered. How can I find that one right box out of all of these? He glanced around. There were so many boxes to choose from. Too many in the amount of time he had left. It's impossible!
What can I do? I can't even sense spirit energy as I am now! Then he paused, a vague memory clawing at his mind. Wait. Uryu said something like that once. Uryu? Wait. How did he figure out I was a soul reaper? "…know?" I wondered how he was able to detect a soul reaper's powers… "Did you even know…" He said something…but what? What was it?
"Did you even know…that a soul reaper's spirit ribbon… is red?"
"That's it!" Ichigo exclaimed, happily, calling for all the ribbons around him, momentarily glad that it was a technique he had used once before. Several dozen spirit ribbons fluttered into range. And then even more, some of them reminding him of the ribbon that had fluttered around his chain of fate. They appeared smoother than the spirit ribbons, their edges more defined, almost as if multiple cloth ribbons made from lace danced amongst the spiritual ones.
There was a red one, a flat crimson trail. His soul reaper powers. He yanked on it, pulling it closer. As it opened, it revealed the hilt of a zanpakuto. What? The hilt…of a zanpakuto?
There were more colored ribbons, shimmering cloths of power that beckoned for his attention. He wrapped an arm around his soul reaper powers and turned his attention toward the other colored streams of energy.
There was a white one with a light gray aura. He tugged on it, and it floated to him, keeping his soul reaper box tucked securely under his arm. It opened in a brilliant flash of light, the box otherwise empty. Ichigo cocked his head, not noticing anything immediate. Okay… that was strange.
Releasing the now-empty box, he pulled on the next color. A white ribbon with a black aura. Darkness burst from the opened box, settling under his skin like a distant itch. Otherwise, it was empty, and he discarded it, feeling like the shadows it released were just within his reach. Maybe, this isn't such a good idea, gathering all these boxes up and opening them…
'Good…you found it,' the old man commented, gesturing to the soul reaper box tucked under his arm. 'I hope…next time…my name will reach your ears.'
Ichigo stared back at him in wonder, the final colored ribbon in his grasp even as he pondered aloud, "Are you…? Could you be…?" Could he be my zanpakuto?
The box connected to the final ribbon bumped into him and he stared at it for a moment, noting the white ribbon with the red aura. Then, just like with the others, he opened it. Red filled his vision for a moment before it dissipated, leaving him with the thirst he had forgotten about since arriving here. Oh, great. Just what I needed. To always feel thirsty…
Then, the world started to shake and rumble, causing him to glance around, worried.
'What are you waiting for! It's collapsing! Pull me out! Quick!' The old man's desperation spurned him into action. With all other thoughts abandoned, Ichigo yanked the zanpakuto hilt from the box.
.
*Jonas Mazeri*
It wasn't looking good from where he was standing. The white mask was nearly fully formed over Ichigo's face, the screaming reduced to growling as it stretched to cover him. Then, Spiritual Pressure and essence aura exploded from him, forcing them all back from the pit's edge. Jonas watched as his twin's essence aura shifted and darkened from light gray to black, the orange-haired teen's aura growing more menacing as time went on.
Down in the pit, Tessai began yelling. "We can't wait any longer, sir! I'm switching to suppression mode!" His 'desperation' was thick in the air, permeating his spiritual pressure with an accompanying 'apprehension' that Jonas understood with Ichigo's power currently raging out of control. There was a pause before the big man's spiritual pressure rose in the pit, challenging the bound teen's. "Bakudo Number Ninety-Nine Part 2! Ban-kin! First Incantation! Shiryû! Bandage!" Jonas peeked over the edge. A thick white cloth stretched from Tessai's palms, wrapping around Ichigo's body. What the hell kind of spell is that?
"Second Incantation! Hyaku Ren San! The hundred gate bolts!" Before Jonas's very eyes, dozens of spears shot into Ichigo's body, piercing the white bandages and stabbing into his twin. He winced sympathetically, imagining that such an undefended strike would hurt later. And while it may pose a risk to life against anyone else, he didn't feel Ichigo's spiritual pressure stutter in the slightest, indicating that it was like his counterpart never even felt it.
Or…maybe he was just in so much pain that he didn't notice?
Jinta scrambled toward the edge, peering down at the older man. "He…hey! Tessai! What're you doing?! He'll die if you do that to him!" Jonas tensed. Was this spell really supposed to be that powerful?! Nothing he had felt up until this point made him think it would kill Ichigo, but… Could I be wrong?
"I have no choice!" Tessai shouted back, his voice strained. "I can barely restrain him! He must be destroyed. Right now! Before he becomes a hollow!" Jinta's face was marred with worry, the normally cocky kid unable to hide his true feelings. Jonas felt his 'fear' and 'concern' through the boy's spiritual pressure, his ability to distinguish the sensations permeating the strange magic of this world sharpening the longer he was here. The older man in the pit radiated 'tension', like he was giving everything he had down there.
"Final Incantation! Ban-Kin Tai-Ho! Constriction Seal!"
There was a blinding flash of light. And from it, Jonas thought he saw the bindings on Ichigo shred and split, the spiritual pressure and essence aura the orange-haired twin was releasing causing the binding spell to break down. The mask was fully formed, staring upwards with glowing red eyes as a large mass formed from Tessai's spiritual pressure and descended toward him. Kisuke grabbed Jinta from the edge, covering the red head with his own body, and Jonas leaped away as well as a giant explosion wracked the underground training area, causing the silver-haired teen to slip and trip, the ground bucking beneath his feet.
"What…i-it exploded?" Jinta murmured, 'surprised.' Jonas rolled over onto his back just in time to watch a light burst from the pit. "Something's coming out! Is it him?!" Jinta shouted, pointing, his finger following the movement as it collided with the ceiling, a wall, and then finally slammed to the ground, tossing them all to the ground again—or at least, anyone that had been hasty in their desire to rise. "Whoa!"
Jonas sat up as the earth ceased heaving beneath him, a cloud of dust from the explosion obscuring all their sight. But he sensed something. Power from the being hidden from their sight. Part of it felt like Ichigo. And part of it didn't. There was darkness and malice swirling around his twin, trying to corrupt his original desire to protect others, the very core of his being. Something isn't right.
"Hey! Is it you, mister?!" Jinta called as he tentatively approached the swirling dust. "Answer me, carrot top! Is it you?! If you're still alive, answer me!"
Jonas hastily stood, silently summoning Tasha Rein as he leaped in front of Jinta, stopping the red head in his tracks. A pair of glowing red eyes emerged from the cloud, ominously flickering into existence. Oh, this is so not good…
"What's wrong, Silver?" Jinta asked. Silver was the red head's nickname for him. Jonas wasn't sure if that was the only meaning behind the name the young boy had given him, but currently Jinta was staring in awe and concern, unable to cast the deeper meaning he felt certain was implied.
Jonas put a gentle hand on Jinta's shoulder. He didn't want to scare him, but he could see Ichigo's essence ribbon shifting in colors, the red aura winning out over the others. It would be too dangerous for the red head to stay here. "Get back. Stay behind Kisuke," he ordered, careful not to take his eyes off the red glowing pair from the dust. He brought Tasha Rein out in front of him, the black ultra greatsword settling before him in a defensive stance. He was waiting. Hoping that Ichigo wasn't falling to the vampirism as Neil had.
But he had very little hope the orange-haired teen could resist.
Without warning, the dust dissipated, revealing a masked Ichigo wearing the same black robes as he had when they had first met. There were markings hidden under the wrapping covering part of his twin's head. For a moment, the red glow to the eyes shimmered and died and Jonas released a pent-up breath that he hadn't realized he had held.
"A hollow's mask…and a soul reaper's shihakusho? Is it a hollow? Or a soul reaper? Which is it?" Jinta murmured in awe behind Kisuke, his voice carrying in the sudden silence.
Then Ichigo reached over his shoulder, pulling free a broken sword. Everyone tensed, shifting into fighting stances as the orange-haired teen moved. His body paused for a moment. Then the red glowing eyes were back. With a howl bordering between a beastly growl and a scream, he charged at Jonas.
The charge was fast, yet sloppy. Jonas dodged to the right, slamming the flat edge of Tasha Rein against Ichigo's side, tossing the orange-haired teen off into a wall. The silver-haired teen tossed a quick glance toward Kisuke. "Keep everyone back!" The blonde nodded and pulled Ururu and Jinta away from the combatants, drawing a sword from the cane sheathe on his waist as he did so.
.
*Kisuke Urahara/Yretro Kosuka*
Kisuke frowned as he eyed the identical twins. This was not supposed to happen. Souls in this universe simply didn't have the capability to become vampires in this manner. They had no Magic Core. It couldn't be done. Unless…the blonde concentrated, gently tugging on the remnants of who he used to be. Benihime squirmed in his mind, the Red Princess's unease at the shifting of his soul screeching like fingernails on chalkboard in his mind.
I'm sorry, Benihime. But I have to know. It's the only way to know how to deal with him.
'Just be careful, Kisuke. There's no way of knowing if your soul will destabilize if you dig too deeply,' Benihime worried in his mind, her concern flowing through their connection like a sour taste.
He slowly sought the power buried deep inside him and then looked at Ichigo as he fought Jonas, the two locked in deadly combat. Ichigo managed to tear at Jonas's clothes and inflict minor damage to his arms. And Jonas backhanded him away before charging after him, swinging his sword with hesitating motions. And there, intertwined with Ichigo's Hakusui, was a Magic Core. One that, even though the power was rapidly changing and morphing into the orange-haired teen's, still stank heavily of Neil's powers.
Oh, so that's how it happened. I didn't think he had done that, even in that state. Hmm…I'm going to guess that instinct drove him to do it, not conscious thought. But I may have to ask the boy that, once this is handled.
'Do you have what you need?' Benihime queried, her voice soft even though he could feel her trembling, the effort of keeping who he was from overtaking who he is now taxing her.
Yes, thank you. And with that, Benihime smothered the remnants of Yretro, and Kisuke let it go without a struggle.
.
*Jonas Mazeri*
Jonas shifted his weight and pressed his advantage, slicing through the broken blade with barely any effort. Ichigo screeched in rage, his voice high and ragged from behind the mask, the mouth opening and revealing long canines that protruded from his mouth. The orange-haired teen leaned forward and latched onto his hand, the teeth easily drawing blood. With a hiss, Jonas punched Ichigo in the side of the head, forcing his twin to release his hand.
Thankfully, the new vampire hadn't begun to drain any magic essence from him. He was weak now, yes, but rapidly gaining strength, pulling on the darkness in his soul with each passing moment. Jonas knew that he didn't have much time left. Ichigo was nearly beyond him in terms of raw powers and didn't seem to be slowing down any. This isn't good. He's going to overpower me if I don't come up with something soon.
'What's going on?' Shila asked, the silver-haired archer's voice reaching him in his mind. He could feel her pressing gently against him in their connection, her own mind gleaning what it could from his. Then he felt her frown as she realized the problem, pulling back from him slightly so she could think without distracting him.
'Want our help?' Neil butted in, the dual wielder's voice cutting off whatever Shila was thinking about. Shila tossed a glare toward the brown-haired teen in their connection, the motion coming across like the crack of a whip in Jonas's mind.
Jonas narrowly dodged a swing from the hilt of Ichigo's sword—the only part of it remaining now that he had cut off the stump and had to duck under a spinning kick before he responded, 'No, I just want you guys to hang back and get ready to run if you have to.' He knew they couldn't handle Ichigo as he was now. Maybe Michael could stand up to him, but everyone else would just be food or Force Submitted to the trash bloodline rampaging through the orange-haired teen's veins. Which wouldn't do anyone any good. A tertiary bloodline such as his—no doubt a by-product from Neil stabbing him earlier despite Kisuke's assurances that this could not happen—was weak and unstable. At least, according to his Blood Memories, it was.
But this one was rapidly getting stronger. He stood and stepped around Ichigo, swinging Tasha Rein down. The other teen twisted to evade but didn't quite manage it, allowing the silver-haired teen to slash him from his left shoulder down to his right hip across his back. In just an instant, white and black liquid bubbled up from the wound, sealing it, before expanding and growing behind him, giving Ichigo a black and white striped tail, the colors running lengthwise with one side white and the other black. Which Jonas got a good look at before it slammed into his abdomen, tossing him across the training ground and away from the others.
At least we're further away from them now.
'This can't continue,' Tasha Rein warned, her voice strained in his mind.
'She's right, Jonas,' Miseanu added, his mother's doppelganger offering her own insight. 'I think the only chance you have at beating him is to drain off his excess power and Force Submit him.'
Jonas frowned as he struggled to his feet. Ichigo was advancing on him with a languid pace, his black and white tail twisting behind him as he approached, allowing the silver-haired teen to catch the red line trailing the side on the white portion as a white line ran down the length of the black side. Glowing red eyes peered out of the white mask, the bandage on the top finally having been removed, revealing two red lines on the left side of the mask along the forehead.
Jonas still wasn't entirely comfortable with his vampire nature. But he couldn't deny that he had felt a need for the past day and a half now, one that couldn't be quenched with any amount of water or tea. His Blood Memories told him that he needed blood filled with magic essence to calm the burning instincts rising within him, but the entire idea made his stomach roll with nausea. He just wasn't ready to accept his new reality yet. But still…
It may be the only way. I'm not strong enough to stop him now. The only thing I can do is to let him get close enough that I can bite him. The jugular was best. But to make this work…I'll have to do what Neil did to Shila, won't I?
'It's a good possibility that a Blood Imprint will occur, yes. But you really don't have a choice. It's either that or kill him,' Miseanu replied, her voice calm and steady in his mind.
Dammit.
Jonas readied Tasha Rein once more and lunged at Ichigo, who tossed the hilt of his broken sword and swiped at him with claws from his left hand. Whoa! Jonas barely had time to dodge the swing, ducking under Ichigo's left hand, allowing him to catch a glimpse of white claws as they stretched overhead. He slammed the butt of Tasha Rein's handle into his twin's stomach before kneeing him in the face, sending Ichigo sprawling to his back on the ground with a cracked mask. Glowing red eyes narrowed as he screamed in rage.
Jonas punched Ichigo in the mask, feeling it crunch further beneath his knuckles even as he hissed in pain, the strike causing his own hand some damage. Before he could pin his twin's limbs to the ground, Ichigo's tail wrapped around his ankle and flipped him onto his back, allowing the orange-haired vampire to pin him instead. Jonas jerked his arms and legs, struggling to free himself as Ichigo's head slowly leaned forward toward his neck.
'Shit!' he cried out mentally, accidentally broadcasting his situation to Neil and Shila. He was in a bad position, his vampiric instincts screaming now in his mind that he couldn't allow this to happen. It never happened this way. Primary or Secondary Bloodline vampires should never be Force Submitted by a Tertiary. It would upset the balance between the families.
'Don't worry. We've got you,' Neil replied, surprisingly calm. Even though Jonas could detect the dual wielder's 'nervousness' permeating his essence aura, the firebrand was doing a decent job of projecting confidence through their Blood Tie, the two warring sensations causing him to blink in confusion before common sense took over.
'No! Don't come over here!' Jonas couldn't let them get any closer. So far, Ichigo was ignoring everyone else in the room, but that was because he had challenged him and possessed the superior bloodline. If he fell or anyone interfered, he was nearly certain that his doppelganger would attack them. For now, it was best if everyone stayed far enough back that they could escape in case things went sideways. But Jonas's objections were forestalled when he felt heat and cold waves rise in his mind, two beacons of power shining brightly across their connection.
'Hurry! Take the power we're offering!' Neil demanded, his concern treading a fine line between instinct and friendship. Jonas could feel the altering currents running through the dual wielder, the vampire side of the brown-haired boy trembling in fear over what was happening—since tertiary bloodlines should always be weaker than a primary—and the human side of the firebrand that could never sit by and do nothing while a friend was in trouble.
Jonas hesitated, even though his own instincts screamed at him to take it, clawing at his resistance. He understood it but ignored it anyways, knowing that he couldn't take any power from his friends. Not if he wanted them to survive if he failed. And if they offered too much…they could leave themselves vulnerable. No…I can't do that to them. I won't. Not even to save myself.
'We did not offer anything more than we could give safely,' Shila replied, seeming to sense why he was hesitating even though Jonas was certain that his thoughts weren't shared.
But it was all the confirmation he needed. If Shila said they could handle it, then they could. She had never steered anyone wrong in the past. Jonas relaxed and seized the power in his mind, feeling it race into his body and fill him with a strength he did not currently possess. He wrenched a leg free and kneed Ichigo in the stomach before flipping him onto his front, easily pinning the orange-haired teen's flailing limbs, his vampiric instincts going shrill with delight. Then, even as a feeling of unease bubbled in his gut, he knelt down and sunk his fangs into Ichigo's neck.
The effect was nearly immediate. The new vampire beneath him bucked and squirmed, hissing and growling beneath him, struggling to get free from him. Jonas strengthened his grip even as Ichigo's tail wrapped around his waist and began futilely to pull on him. The silver-haired teen frowned and then reluctantly began to siphon Ichigo's spirit energy and essence aura, the orange-haired vampire's blood exploding in a tangy taste of power and life that flowed easily into his mouth.
Jonas squeezed his eyes shut, struggling between the ecstasy that ravaged his body from absorbing so much power and the disgust he felt with having done this. It was different this time than what he had done to Neil. Before, he simply had to exert a little control. But now, he was having to force his control onto someone significantly stronger.
It felt so good, and he had to suppress a moan. But it was so terribly wrong too. Disgusting.
I hope he can forgive me for this later.
Slowly, Ichigo's tail slipped off his waist, the teen beneath him relaxing as his power flowed out of his body. Jonas shifted, biting back a moan as his entire body felt way more sensitive than before, the skin tingling pleasantly as he moved. He sucked in a breath as he felt another connection form in his mind, a swirling mass of spiritual pressure and essence aura matching Ichigo's power. But even though his power was rapidly draining away from the boy pinned beneath him, those glowing red eyes hadn't abated. Why not?
Looking inward, Jonas asked, Am I doing something wrong? Why isn't it working? Pleasure overrode all of his thoughts, waves of ecstasy rushing over his skin and throughout his body. Distantly, he felt that he was trembling, overcome with adrenaline and the overwhelming feeling pulsing throughout his body. He didn't dare move. He didn't want to even think about what he would do if he shifted again. Twisted thoughts shifted through his mind, and he mentally shook his head. I am so not going there. I want Sheila. This…this is just this imprint forming. That's all it is.
Breathe. I need to breathe. In. Out. In. Out. Calm down. Think through it. What am I missing? He's still struggling. I can feel him moving beneath me, still trying weakly to get free. Another wave of pleasure slammed through his body as the teen's tail brushed limply against his ankle. He gasped, his eyes rolling in his head even as he squeezed them tightly closed, whimpering even as his body shuddered in delight. Jonas felt sweat break out all over his body and he nearly squirmed as even that felt like it was too much for him to take.
'You need to Force Submit him now,' Miseanu answered.
Right! Thank you. And Jonas obliged, raising his essence aura and the tattered form of spiritual pressure he obtained from Ichigo, before he pressed it down on the vampire beneath him, focusing its weight on his doppelganger. The tertiary bloodline vamp moaned softly, his entire body shuddering and then going limp, before the red glow subsided. Jonas pulled his fangs from Ichigo's neck and slipped off the panting teen, his entire body covered in sweat and trembling with adrenaline.
With a cautious probe, he reached out and connected with Ichigo's mind, solidifying the Blood Imprint he had started. Ichigo? He didn't dare touch him. His skin was hyper-sensitive, and it was all he could do to not scratch himself bloody in an effort to make it stop, simply thankful that he no longer had to pin the other teen beneath him. He felt all the droplets of sweat dotting his skin. All the lacerations covering his body and stinging in pain. All the dirt matted in his hair and smeared across his arms and legs.
He took a shuddering breath, trying to let it all out.
Ichigo?
.
*Ichigo Kurosaki*
Ichigo?
Ichigo scrunched his eyes, slowly opening them, a voice in his mind beckoning him towards consciousness. Squinting, he raised a hand to cover his eyes. The bright light hurt them, causing them to water in response. And his entire body felt beaten and bruised, like he had gotten the shit beaten out of him down in the pit. Multiple layers of bruises were forming across his stomach, and he felt a particularly nasty one forming on his back.
…
The pit! He glanced around, pushing himself to his hands and knees, seeing that he had somehow escaped from the Shattered Shaft. He was above ground, Jonas hunched over and panting beside him. The other boy's clothes were torn, and he had several nasty cuts across his arms. Wow, he looks like shit.
'Yeah, you can thank yourself for that, partner,' a voice echoed from within his mind.
What the hell? He glanced around, knowing for certain that no one was around him that sounded like that. And Jonas was still sitting beside him, silent, his face turned away from him and body shaking like he was coming down off an adrenaline high.
"H-hey, are you okay?" Ichigo asked, staring at his silver-haired doppelganger beside him.
Jonas's head whipped around to look at him and Ichigo nearly recoiled, blood dripping off the other's chin like he had taken a punch to the teeth. His dark blue eyes were blown wide open, pupils nearly fully eclipsing his irises. With a shudder, his twin nodded jerkily. "Umm, yeah. You?" His voice was raspy and shaky, coming out between harsh pants. Jonas looked him over and glanced past him.
Ichigo took a personal inventory. Ten fingers. Two arms. Two legs. Ten toes. And a…tail? He pitched forward with a yelp, tossing dirt in Jonas's face and forcing the other teen to cough and turn away even as he muttered an apology, the extra appendage trailing along behind him. Shaking, he stood, realizing that he felt exhausted, his muscles protesting their usage, and glanced behind him. Clear as day, there was a tail attached to him. For the moment, it hung limp, an extra weight attached to the end of his spine where doctors theorized humans used to have tails. With a small amount of concentration, he could make it move, the muscles in it eagerly obeying his instructions.
With a ragged exhale, he announced, "This is weird."

Terminology
My Universe:
Beasts:
Dark Severiin: think of a Deviljho from Monster Hunter when you think of this thing. Physically, it is a bit different, but I am using a lot of comparisons to describe characters and things. This is the thing I am vaguely describing at the beginning of the chapter that Jonas and his friends were fighting. The characters from my story are being pulled from their timeline during the Dark Severiin fight in Arc 1 of Chronicles of Seraphia (the book series I am working on).
.
.
Magic (General):
Magic Core: the core of an individual's magical ability. No Magic Core means that the person cannot wield Magic AT ALL. All Magic Essence that an individual can manipulate originates from their Magic Core. It is located in the chest just behind the heart along the spine. The Essence Ribbon for a person is tied directly to this place.
It is possible to transfer powers from one person to another through a technique referred to as a Spark Transfer. This can be done to awaken a person's dormant Magic Core, grant a Magic Core to an individual with no Core, or replenish the receiver's magic essence at the expense of the giver (giving energy directly from one person to another so the receiver can continue fighting, for example).
.
Magic Wielder: an individual capable of manipulating the magic essence within and beyond their body to produce magical skills and abilities. Just because a person has a Magic Core does not automatically mean that they can use magic. Some people must have their Magic Core activated in order to use magic.
.
Magic is divided into 6 Divisions: Spellcaster Magic, Weapon Magic, Incantation Magic, Spiritual Magic, Elemental Magic, and Ritual Magic.
.
Magic Class: One of ten major classifications of various magics.
Mental, Arcane, Holy, Unholy, Nature, Dark, Light, Fire, Water, and Earth Magics.
Mental Magic is the ONLY recognized Class without a definite subclass.
.
Magic Subclass: one of several magics that make up a magic class.
Space/Time Subclasses are part of Arcane Magic.
Holy/Angel/Blessing Subclasses are part of Holy Magic.
Unholy/Demon/Curse Subclasses are part of Unholy Magic.
Plant/Animal/Poison Subclasses are part of Nature Magic.
Dark/Death/Summoner Subclasses are part of Dark Magic.
Light/Life/Conjurer Subclasses are part of Light Magic.
Fire/Lightning/Chaos/Sun Subclasses are part of Fire Magic.
Water/Ice/Wind/Moon Subclasses are part of Water Magic.
Earth/Metal/Magma Subclasses are part of Earth Magic.
.
Primary Wavelength: there are many different levels of magical communication. The space in an individual's mind directly below the Weapon Wavelength is this layer where communication through Blood Imprints, Dragon Imprints and Plant Summons exist.
.
Weapon Wavelength: the layer in a person's mind near the top of their consciousness where a Magic Weapon of some sort communicates with their wielder. This is the level Engeta Zanu, Tasha Rein, and the other Weapons communicate on.
.
Tending to a Wavelength: a mental process where an individual concentrates and focuses their efforts on increasing the bond between two sides of a connection (such as a Blood Imprint or Blood Tie), making the connection more stable. Needs to be done periodically to keep imprints etc. smooth. If not done, can lead to a lot of mental hardships. Must be done when adding to the existing connections or making new ones on the same wavelength to prevent signals from getting tangled. (think of it like untangling a ball of yarn and keeping it separated while continuously moving the string around and adding to it).
.
.
Magic (Weapons):
Magic Weapon: a magical Weapon bound to an individual from birth. Magic Weapons are created from Weapon Spirits that choose a child as it is born and meld with the newborn's spirit to become their Magic Weapon later in life. Weapon Spirits are reincarnated whenever they choose a new wielder (after they are separated from their current one). Typically wielded only by living people in either the Light World or the Dark World. Used to send spirits on to the realms.
.
Weapon Magic Wielder: Weapon Magic Wielders are able to manipulate the Magic Essence in their bodies to summon powerful Weapons and communicate with the Weapon Essences to gain new powers and abilities.
If one can only use Weapon Magic, then they are also referred to as Guardians (this term can also be used for someone that uses a Spirit Weapon or Hell Weapon if the Weapon is the only magical ability they have).
.
.
Weapon Spirit/Weapon Essence: the personality and appearance of a Magic or Spirit Weapon within and beyond the wielder's inner world. Each one has a unique appearance and powers. They choose to bind to an individual's spirit (typically at birth) and help to shape their wielder's development. In the end, it is hard (sometimes) to distinguish the two from each other (what is the natural state of the wielder and what part of the wielder's personality and traits were influenced by the Weapon kind of question).
.
Tasha Rein: Jonas's Magic Weapon.
Humanoid Form: 5'5". Long black and silver hair and black eyes. She wore a black, form-fitting kimono with dark blue accents along the outer edges and dark blue cloth on the inside. Dark blue threads held it all together. While the body of the kimono was form-fitting, the arms and legs had plenty of room and were quite baggy.
Lore: Means 'Ultimate Darkness/The Black Dragon'
.
Engeta Zanu: Neil Agamon's Magic Weapon.
Humanoid Form: looks like Neil except he is all white. Wears a dark orange kimono with a crimson inner liner and dark red stitches. Wears a pair of baggy red pants that flare at his feet with matching crimson socks slipped into a basic flat black sandal. There is a red flame design etched into the bottom of the robe's top half.
Lore: Engeta Zanu also means Twin Flickering Flames. The idea that a flame reflects the spirit of a person (hence why he is Neil's duplicate), with different colors indicating different moods and the color white representing the complete balance of all that power (since it is said that white is the conglomeration of all color whereas black is the absence of color). Engeta Zanu is a pair of dual long swords.
.
Kisi Ri: Magic Weapon belonging to The Matriarch and, by extension, the feral vampires under her control.
Lore: functions by inserting vampire magical abilities into a person's Magic Core, thus transforming them into a vampire. High success rate.
.
Juka Reyno: Shila Mezere's Magic Weapon.
Humanoid Form: 5'4". Long white hair tossed behind her head in gentle curls flowing to the center of her back. Stunned bright blue eyes. Wears a floor-length white and blue dress that shimmered as she walked, now streaked with lines of red and black.
.
.
Weapon Release (Weapon State): Similar in nature to a Shikai or Bankai release. However, there are 10 Mortal Tier Releases (as opposed to the 2 levels that Soul Reapers can use).
.
Kogomosa/Shikai: The 1st Weapon Release in the Mortal Tier of Weapon Releases. Equivalent to Shikai state, with fighters on average becoming twice as strong as their initial summon state. X2 Initial Summon.
.
.
Magic Weapon Classes: Magic Weapons have classes which determine how exactly they are used, along with describing total size of the Weapons etc. Basically, a dual longsword class is different than a dual short sword class and indicates the length of the blades. There are also dual classes which will be explained later.
Weapons are Melee (up close), Ranged (far away), Defensive (which falls under the melee class), or Dual Form (two different types of weapons that are part of one weapon. Think of the weapons from Bloodborne and how almost every single one had 2 forms.)
.
Sword Lengths- Daggers are between 5 to 10 inches long. Short swords are between 10 and 18 inches long. Long swords are between 18 and 30 inches long. Greatswords are between 30 and 48 inches long. Ultra greatswords are between 48 and 72 inches long.
Curved swords mean that the flat side of the blade (the part that is not sharp) is curved, along with the bladed edge. Regular swords are straight here, regardless of whether the blade itself arcs into a curve. (for a comparison, Zangetsu would be considered an Ultra Greatsword class.)

.
Weapon Summon Spell: each Magic Weapon has a specific phrase or word that allows their wielder to bring them into the world (summon their weapon). This is similar to the phrase used by a soul reaper to awaken their zanpakuto to Shikai.
Initial Summon: The basic summon and first form of a Magic Weapon. Each Initial Summon has an activation spell (summoning spell) to summon the Weapon into existence.
.
Kisi Ri summon spell: Turn Them
.
Engeta Zanu summon spell: Burn
.
Tasha Rein summon spell: Descend
.
Juka Reyno summon spell: Pierce
.
.
Weapon Dispel Spell: each Magic Weapon has a specific phrase or word that allows their wielder to disperse the magic essence forming their weapon, allowing it to disappear (dispel their weapon). Currently, there is no known way for a soul reaper to do something like this, since their zanpakuto is a physical creation and not summoned out of reishi.
.
Tasha Rein dispel spell: Disappear
.
.
Magic (Incantations):
Incantation Magic: Magic that manipulates the magic essence in one's body to cast powerful spells which are formed and guided by chants and body positioning. While divided into 14 subcategories (7 Mortal Tier and 7 God Tier), they also adhere to the basic class/subclass mentality introduced by Spellcaster Magic, giving their spells magic types.
This type of Magic is also referred to as 'True Magic'. Could be compared to Hado/Bakudo spells from Bleach or even the spellcasting from Charmed. Each spell has a specific name and number, along with a specific chant that allows the user to channel the proper amount of energy into the spell and guide it into the correct form.
Those that can ONLY use Incantation Magic are referred to as Witches.
.
.
Magic (Spellcaster):
Spellcaster Magic: Magic that manipulates the magic essence in one's body and surroundings, allowing a Spellcaster Magic Wielder to influence their surroundings and environment on a basic level. It is separated into 4 sub-categories, which are then broken down into the ten major classes and their numerous subclasses.
This type of Magic is also referred to as 'Basic Magic'. Could be compared to the Bending Arts from Avatar in that there are no specific names that are exclaimed when certain attacks are used (although some signature spells have unique names). While all uses of the magics have basic names, many spellcaster spells are not special enough to have a specially designated name and the 'names' given to these basic spells is just so one can differentiate different levels of attack.
Those that can ONLY use Spellcaster Magic are referred to as Wizards.
.
Cosmic Magic: 1 of 4 sub-categories of Spellcaster Magic. Represents Mental Magic, Arcane (space/time) Magic, Blood Magic, and Transmutation Magic.
Only Mental Magic and Arcane Magic are considered Magic Classes. Blood Magic and Transmutation Magic are considered separate types of Magic and are NOT recognized by the Dragon Clans.
.
Godly Magic: 1 of 4 subcategories of Spellcaster Magic. Represents Holy (holy/angel/blessing) Magic and Unholy (unholy/demon/curse) Magics. Both Holy and Unholy are considered Magic Classes.
.
Worldly Magic: 1 of 4 subcategories of Spellcaster Magic. Represents Nature (plant/animal/poison) Magic, Dark (dark/death/summoner) Magic, and Light (light/life/conjurer) Magic. Nature, Dark, and Light Magics are considered Magic Classes.
.
Elemental Magic: 1 of 4 subcategories of Spellcaster Magic. Represents Fire (fire/lightning/chaos/sun) Magic, Water (water/ice/wind/moon) Magic, and Earth (earth/metal/magma) Magic. Fire, Water, and Earth Magics are considered Magic Classes.
.
.
Magic (Spiritual):
Spiritual Magic: Magic that manipulates the Magic Essence within and around an individual's spirit to cast powerful spells similar to spellcaster magic. These spells are empowered by the strength of one's spirit and are solely used by the dead or those influenced by the dead. There are 5 subcategories of Spiritual Magic: Dark Spirit Magic, Hell Spirit Magic, Hell Spirit Weapon Magic, Light Spirit Magic, and Spirit Weapon Magic (although, really, the Weapon Magics fall under the purview of general Weapon Magic for the most part, even though there are a few differences between them all).
This type of Magic is also referred to as Dead Magic or Magic of the Dead. The basic idea could be compared to the spirit magic in Bleach in spirit (pun intended), but they have no chants or anything like that. It would probably be closer to the hollow skills if one insisted on the comparison.
If one can ONLY use Spiritual Magic (and they are still alive), then they are also referred to as Spirit Guardians. (Infusers also fall into this category if Spirit Magic is all the magic ability they have.)
.
.
Magic (Elemental Spirit):
Elemental Magic: Magic that manipulates the Magic Essence within and around an individual's body to make themselves more compatible with a desired Elemental Spirit. These wielders are capable of physically/spiritually binding to an Elemental Spirit, borrowing an Elemental Spirit's power for a set amount of time, or subjugating an Elemental Spirit. There are 3 major ideologies (Druidism, Shamanism, and Subjugation) for Elemental Magic users, and none of them get along.
This type of Magic is also referred to as Ancient Magic because it is the basic premise of returning to magic's roots and working with the elemental spirits governing certain magical abilities.
Druids operate much like the Avatar in which an Elemental Spirit enters the body of a person and lives within them, strengthening their body and allowing their magic to pass through them.
Shamans borrow the power of an Elemental Spirit by gaining favor with an Elemental and getting a portion of that spirit's power.
Warlocks subjugate an Elemental Spirit and force that spirit to do their bidding.
If one can ONLY use Elemental Spirit Magic, then they are referred to as Elemental Spirit Guardians.
.
.
Magic (Ritual):
Ritual Magic: Magic that manipulates the Magic Essence within a person's body and from their surroundings using special rituals and ceremonies to cast powerful spells or create magical artifacts. They use combinations of otherwise powerless objects to craft special spells for numerous purposes. They are known as the group packrat and typically either have lots of control using magic, or next to none. Rarely, are they average in their controlling abilities.
This type of Magic is also referred to as Object Magic because it is based around items and ceremony, oftentimes relying heavily on both to form the magic as opposed to any input from the caster.
If one can ONLY use Ritual Magic, then they are referred to as Mediums.
.
.
Vampire Specific:
Vampire: A subspecies of humanoid. Draws magical power by draining the magic from a target's bloodstream. Very good users of ranged magics. Known for their usage of Blood Magic. Predominately female-led society.
.
Blood Imprint: a type of magical connection through blood. Made between a vampire and someone else. On the Primary Wavelength.
This type of connection allows the imprinter and imprintee to use each other's magical abilities and Magic Weapons.
.
The Change: the process of transforming into a vampire.
.
Primary Bloodline: Bloodlines named after and descended directly from the vampire offspring of those that wielded the 10 Dragon Champion Weapons in ancient times. They are well known for their mastery of their particular Magic Class.
.
Secondary Bloodline: Bloodlines named after the specific matings of the Primary Bloodlines. Known for their ability to wield two Magic Classes related to their names.
.
Tertiary Bloodline (trash bloodline): unstable bloodlines. Too numerous and diverse to be able to name them all. Not known for anything special. Fall to feral status easier because of their magical instability.
.
Forced Submission (vampire): This is something that can ONLY be done by a Primary or Secondary Bloodline on a vampire going through The Change that is in their feral state. Primaries can ONLY be force submitted by other Primaries. Secondaries can be force submitted by either primaries or secondaries. While Tertiaries can be force submitted by any primary or secondary but are unable to force submit anyone except other tertiaries. (this is due to the strength of the bloodlines involved.) When a Primary or a Secondary force submit a Tertiary, they are essentially birthing their target into their bloodline.
.
Blood Tie: a magical connection between two vampires where one force submitted another. This loosely connects all that are directly connected with the two involved in the Blood Tie (includes any imprints on both sides. For example, Jonas force submitted Neil. Neil is Blood Imprinted with Shila. Therefore, through the Blood Tie, Jonas is connected to Shila.)
.
Blood Memories (genetic memories): Primary Bloodlines and Secondary Bloodlines pass on genetic memories and abilities through their blood, gifting subsequent generations with the same skills and memories of days long past. (this is possible even though magical ability isn't technically passed on this way.)
.
Rein/Mazeri Vampires: Descended from Miseanu Meizerai/Rein. They are masters of the Dark Magic Class and specialize in stealth, summoning, and raising the dead to fight again (necromancy). Jonas's particular bloodline is spawned from Bequaki Mazeri, who was once known as Bequaki Rein, but she changed her name and began the Mazeri bloodline when she disagreed with the other primary vampire bloodlines and their decision to attack the werewolves.
.
.
Lore:
When a vampire first begins The Change, they have a brief period where they 'go feral' (i.e. go insane, lose themselves to bloodlust and instincts, etc.). Most vampires turn back toward the light shortly after their body full changes, but not all. There is a higher chance of someone with a tertiary/trash bloodline of staying feral than someone belonging to a primary or secondary bloodline.
.
In the canon storyline, the Matriarch, while powerful, is simply a strong Mental Magic user from a tertiary bloodline. In fact, her Weapon, Kisi Ri, should work far better than it does in controlling her victims, but it doesn't because of her lineage. Because my characters are now in the Bleach universe with no ready means of returning home, they are cut off from the majority of her mental influence. Therefore, Jonas was able to defeat the portion of her power struggling for dominance easily whereas Neil (and by extension, Shila) had to struggle and required Jonas's aid.
.
Okay, so Ichigo had a tertiary bloodline (because he got his vampirism from Neil who got it from The Matriarch and Neil had stabbed Ichigo with Kisi Ri before Jonas Force Submitted him). But, as Jonas realized, while he was a tertiary bloodline, he was rapidly becoming a powerful trash vampire. To the extent that, while he normally wouldn't be able to Force Submit Jonas (because Jonas is a primary and tertiaries can't normally force a primary to submit), he would have been able to had Jonas failed to repel him. This, of course, would have had drastic consequences, which thankfully, we don't have to worry about now.

Essence Ribbon Specific:
The color of the Essence Ribbon is determined by the individual's spellcaster magic aptitude. Ribbons only demonstrate the powers the individual is aware of and capable of wielding.
The color of the Essence Ribbon is also affected by whether or not they are a Weapon Wielder or an Incantation Wielder and they also change depending on their vampire/werewolf status and spiritual status.
Those that do not wield any Magic whatsoever have pure WHITE ribbons. This means no spellcaster magic, no incantations, and no Weapons—no magic anything. Ritual Magic users also show no magic potential due to the nature of that magic and are the ONLY ones capable of using spells without affecting the appearance of their ribbon.
Vampires have a red aura surrounding their essence ribbon. Werewolves have a blue aura. Werepires have a purple aura. Light Spirits have a light gray aura. Dark Spirits (otherwise referred to as Shades) have a black aura. These auras are only sensed when the individual is blatantly showing off their subspecies abilities or if the person sensing their essence ribbon has great detection abilities.
Those that wield Weapon Magic have a black outline to their ribbons. If the ribbon is also black, then there is a white line separating the outer edges from the main body of the ribbon to denote the two abilities within. If the individual does not wield spellcaster magic, then a silver line separates the outer edge from the main body of the ribbon to denote the lack of other ability.
Those that wield Spellcaster Magic have the entire body of the ribbon as a specific color. If the individual is capable of wielding Magic from two different classes, then the body of the ribbon will be striped with the corresponding colors. If the wielder does not wield incantations or Weapons, then the outside edge of the ribbon is pure white. If the ribbon is white, there will be a black line separating the outer edges from the main body to denote the lack of incantation or Weapon abilities.
Arcane Magic Class wielders have translucent white ribbons. Specks of black represent Time Magic and specks of purple represent Space Magic.
Mental Magic wielders have amethyst ribbons. There is no subclass and so there are no specks in the ribbon.
Fire Magic Class wielders have red ribbons. There will be specks of ruby representing fire, gold representing lightning, orange representing chaos, and black representing sun.
Water Magic Class wielders have blue ribbons. There will be specks of sapphire representing water, white representing ice, green representing wind, and gray representing moon.
Earth Magic Class wielders have brown ribbons. There will be specks of bronze representing earth, specks of silver representing metal and specks of ruby representing magma.
Nature Magic Class wielders have dark green ribbons. There will be specks of emerald representing plant, specks of black representing animal and specks of purple representing poison.
Light Magic Class wielders have white ribbons. There will be specks of silver representing light, specks of yellow representing conjurer and specks of green representing life.
Dark Magic Class wielders have black ribbons. There will be specks of gold representing dark, specks of purple representing summoner and specks of silver representing death.
Holy Magic Class wielders have yellow ribbons. There will be specks of gold representing holy, specks of white representing angel and specks of red representing blessings.
Unholy Magic Class wielders have dark gray ribbons. There will be specks of silver representing unholy, specks of black representing demon and specks of red representing curses.
The Matriarch's 'thralls' (for lack of a better term—those The Matriarch turns into feral vampires and then controls) have iridescent essence ribbons (the colors are always shifting and never settle).
All living and non-living things have Essence Ribbons.

Humanoid Characters:
Jonas Mazeri: main character in Chronicles of Seraphia. short, spiky silver hair. Dark blue eyes. 5'7". Skinny and toned. 16 years old. Wields Tasha Rein.
.
Neil Agamon- 5'7". Short and straight brown hair. Brown eyes. He appears average build with clothes on but is physically fit. 16 years old. Wields Engeta Zanu.
Neil's Flames: so, there are different colors for different emotions/states of being, with colors having multiple meanings. He is a character that tends to speak without a 'filter' and got the nickname Firebrand for being such a pain in the ass. But despite how he behaves normally, he doesn't always intend to come across as rude/insulting as he does. He just doesn't convey what he means very well.
.
Shila Mezere- 5'4". Long silver hair that reaches between her shoulder blades. Light blue eyes. Thin. 16 years old. Wields Juka Reyno. Uses Ice Subclass Magic.
.
Casey Urdoni- 5'4". Long black hair. Dark blue eyes so dark they are almost black. Impassive face. 15 years old. Wields ?
.
Kienan Urdoni- 5'8". Short black hair. Black eyes. 16 years old. Wields ?
.
Michael Koto- 5'7". Brown eyes. Short light blonde hair. 16 years old. Wields ?
.
Sheila Emetere- ?
.
Sirta Mazeri- 5'5". Long silver hair. Dark blue eyes. Jonas's mother. (deceased).
.
Miseanu Meizerai/Rein: looks just like Sirta Mazeri (except maybe a little more muscular. Long silver hair. Dark blue eyes.
.
Maku and Sima Mazeri: They are fraternal twins. Maku is a boy. Sima is a girl. They are younger than Jonas by a few years and were there with Jonas when their parents died before their eyes. They are not present in this timeline.

Extra Notes/General Seraphia Worldbuilding:
Jonas Mazeri's appearance: So, I never fully describe exactly what his face (or anyone else's face really) in my universe looks like. I give the basic hair and eye color, heights, and builds but I leave the faces open to the imagination (unless there is a specific scar I wish to address). So, I thought, how cool would it be if Jonas looked like Ichigo? (guess you can figure out which character I like the most, eh?)
.
Light World/Dark World: two different worlds that exist as copies of each other. This is where all life lives before it dies. (think of them like the World of the Living in Bleach.)
.
Realms: There are actually 12 realms where spirits live after life. 10 of them exist where their specific magics are prominent (and each of these 10 have a light side and a dark side to them). Then, there is Hell (realm of Sinners). Finally, there is the Otherlands (which is the realm of ALL Weapon Spirits).
.
Betweenlands: The dimension that keeps all the realms and the worlds connected. (kind of like the Dangai).
.
In my universe, all things give off essence ribbons. Everything has a small amount of magic essence which then strongly or weakly gives off an aura of power. So, Jonas has the ability to see these ribbons (all ribbons) and since there aren't that many Essence Ribbons in this universe (because the only ones currently belong to him and his friends), it is far easier for him to search for his missing friend this way.
.
In my universe, before the kids got sent to the Bleach universe, both Neil and Jonas were attacked by vampires under someone's control named The Matriarch. The Matriarch is a person with the Magic Weapon, Kisi Ri, and she can use it to transform people into vampires. Those that she initiates the change with, can use her Weapon to varying degrees.
.
Primary School: the equivalent of High School in my universe.
.
Trade School: the equivalent of college for people without magical powers.
.
Magic School: the equivalent of college for people with magical powers. The graduates enter the Magic Squads (similarly to how those that go to the Soul Reaper Academy join the 13 Court Guard Squads when they leave the school).
.
There are 10 Dragon Clans which represent each of the 10 Magic Classes. They do not recognize the existence of Blood Magic or Transmutation Magic, which is why those two are not considered Magic Classes.

Hollow Specific:
Hollow: A spirit being that ate out its own heart in its suffering and one that continues searching for spirit energy and souls to relieve its never-ending hunger and desire to fulfill the emptiness of its existence.
(You all should read 'On the precipice of defeat' by MissFlesh. Holy crap! I loved the unique perspective of a Hollow that this writer gives. So many fanfictions skip over the gruesome aspects of existing as a hollow and portray it like some sort of glamorous existence that downplays how horrible being a hollow really is (they romanticize it, not that I am saying the other stories are bad by any stretch. They aren't, but they don't fully immerse you in the terrible state of being a hollow like this fanfiction does) and this author got into the nitty-gritty of life as a hollow and truly captured how bad life as one is. Truly a magnificent read and gives a whole new perspective of life as a monster.) It isn't completed and I don't think it ever will be, but there is plenty of story here to sink your teeth into that it fully captures the hopelessness of that life.
.
Menos Grande: A classification of the three most-powerful forms that hollows can take. Gillian is the lowest. Adjuchas is the middle. Vasto Lorde is the highest.

Resurrection (Resurrección): Returning Blade. The first release of an arrancar that allows them to regenerate any damage they have sustained and return to their original hollow form.
Resurrection Segunda Etapa: Second Stage. The second release of an arrancar beyond the initial Resurrection that grants power far beyond the first release. Could be considered equal to, or greater, than a Soul Reaper's Bankai state.

Close Similarities/Similar Skills:
Magic Weapon/Zanpakuto/Spirit Weapon: Magic Weapons and Spiritual Magic Weapons are similar to zanpakuto in that they are Weapons unique to an individual. However, their origins are different.
X2 Initial Summon.
.
Essence Ribbon/Spirit Ribbon: In Bleach, Spirit Ribbons turn red if a person is a soul reaper, otherwise they are white. This is how Uryu said that he figured out about Ichigo and Rukia. They are visible rays of spirit energy.
In my universe, Essence Ribbons change color and pattern based on the magical abilities the person has demonstrated to be capable of using. They can also have auras. They are visible rays of magic energy and get their name from magic's base term: Magic Essence.
In this fanfiction, one can detect how someone is feeling (emotionally or physically) by touching their ribbon. This is a more advanced technique than simply feeling someone's pressure/aura.
.
Divine Sight/Seeing Spirit Ribbons: In Bleach, Rukia states that the ability to see Spirit Ribbons (rays of spirit energy) is something that only high-ranking soul reapers can use.
Divine Sight is the special ability to see Essence Ribbons.
.
Essence Aura/Spiritual Pressure (Reiatsu): In Bleach, Spiritual Pressure is the pressure that a person's spiritual power (Reiryoku) exerts (described like reiryoku output).
Essence Aura is the pressure that a person's magical power exerts. It gets its name from magic's base term: Magic Essence.
In this fanfiction, one can detect how someone is feeling (emotionally or physically) by feeling their aura. This is typically a beginner technique, but the more advanced sensing requirements put it more in the intermediate category.
.
Energy/Spiritual Power (Reiryoku): In Bleach, a person's spiritual power/spiritual energy is referred to as Reiryoku. It is their personal wellspring of power that is all their own. Each person has a certain amount and a limit they cannot surpass.
In my universe, this is referred to as Energy. In my universe, Energy can be divided into 2 categories: Magic Energy and Spirit Energy (with Spirit Energy being a mere subset of Magic Energy).
In this fanfiction, when one's spiritual power/energy is exhausted, the person collapses from lack of remaining energy.
.
Magic Essence/Reishi (spiritual matter): In Bleach, reishi is what makes up objects in Soul Society and Hueco Mundo. The concentrations there are higher because they are the two spirit worlds of Bleach although some does exist in the World of the Living.
Magic Essence: the basis of ALL magical happenings in my universe. My entire world is formed from Magic Essence (which broken down is called Essence Elements, which we won't touch on until much later). Therefore, nearly all magic skills have some part of their name coming from one of these two words.
.
Essence Elements/Atoms (Kishi): Kishi is like the World of the Living version of Reishi and makes up nearly all objects in the World of the Living and is a term to describe atoms as a whole.
Essence Elements are my universe's version of protons, neutrons, and electrons. The term as a whole can be used interchangeably with magic essence while referring to a single element cannot. They are further broken down into Sub-Elemental Essences (which are basically subatomic).
.
Inner World/Mindscape/Realm of the Zanpakuto: this definition is basically identical between universes. Regardless of what phrase one wants to use, they all mean the same thing. Inner World. Inner Mind. Mindscape. Landscape of the Mind. Realm of the Weapon Spirit. Realm of the Zanpakuto. Literally all refers to the place in a wielder's mind where the Weapon resides and where they go to commune directly with the Weapon that is a part of them.
.
Magic Weapon Auto-Dispel/Zanpakuto Auto-Seal: Just like how zanpakutos revert back to their sealed state when their wielder is knocked unconscious, a similar thing happens when a Magic Weapon Wielder is knocked unconscious (their Weapon dispels).
.
Yretro Kosuka- is Kisuke Urahara.
.
Shini (Light Spirits)/Plus (Whole): spirits of those that have died. Equivalent to a Plus (whole) soul in Bleach universe.

Final Notes:
I want to thank Andygoesrawr from Reddit for the amazing breakdown of the differences between the terms Reishi, Reiryoku, and Reiatsu that he posted nearly 8 years ago on the Reddit page: The Difference between Reishi, Reiryoku and Reiatsu. He also covered the concept of Kishi. I found this page and read it to make sure I wasn't messing up the distinction between the three too badly (turns out that I really was and, in my confusion over the terms when I was laying the foundation for the magic in my world, I ended up doing the same thing as this here was. Go figure).
.
Also, I am editing how I am doing the terminology, etc. and how it will all be organized. Hopefully, it is better than previously. I am also planning on including all the definitions etc. at the end of the chapters (as opposed to stating which chapter I defined them at the beginning of the chapter and pushing off the start of the story each time).
.
I know I stated that Kisuke is Yretro from my universe. So, based on the above information, one would be correct in believing that he should have an Essence Ribbon. However, the reason why this is not true is because he was essentially reborn in the Bleach universe. Therefore, he follows their natural laws not mine.
.
And the people in my world do not use glasses. This is why Jonas has no clue what they are.
.
I am also aware that I am repeating the terms, etc. at the end of the chapters, but I felt it would be easier on the reader than if they had to search a different chapter each time they wanted a refresher.
.
I have to say that I love the Bleach Wiki. Here's a shout of thanks to everyone that made that website into the brilliant resource that it is. I would never remember all the specific spells otherwise.
.
Jonas is a Mazeri/Rein vampire by birth which is a Primary Bloodline. Neil was transformed by The Matriarch's power, and she came from a tertiary bloodline. So, when Jonas forced Engeta Zanu to submit, he was birthing Neil into the Mazeri bloodline. Basically, Neil is a Mazeri vampire now with all the bloodline skills etc. that come along with that with the exception of the Blood Memories which he does not have. Blood Memories can only be passed on from ancestor to direct descendant, not through a forced submission.
Jonas force submitting Neil's vampiric side is also why Jonas can feel what Neil is feeling. And he can sense Shila through Neil because Neil and Shila are imprinted. (normally, Neil biting Shila for that short period of time would not have caused an imprint. However, because she broke the barrier between them in her inner world and went to him in his, she cemented their connection.) This connection between the three is ONLY because Jonas force submitted Neil's vampire side. (this connection works similarly to an imprint in that they can sense each other's feelings. However, power sharing is NOT included in this.)
Engeta Zanu made the comment that he was 'back now' to Jonas when Jonas force submitted him. This is because of how the transformation took effect on Neil. Because Neil was not born from, nor ever descended from a vampire, he was not meant to become a vampire. The Matriarch's power had infiltrated his spirit and tried taking over Engeta Zanu (which she could because he had no natural bloodline to resist her). Once Jonas forced his bloodline onto Neil, it caused the hold on Engeta Zanu to disappear, allowing the Weapon's regular personality to reemerge.
The fact that Jonas is a Mazeri vampire is the entire reason why the transformation went differently for him than it did for Neil. This is why it took the shape of his mother and acted more like an outside force attacking rather than a possession.
.
Okay, so I am being kinda lazy (ish). I was watching the anime (English dubbed) version of Bleach to get the dialogue right for the canon stuff when I decided that it is too much of a pain to watch each section of episode half a dozen times (since I can't type nearly as fast as they talk). Therefore, the dialogue will now be a mixture between the anime and the manga, along with a few word changes because I preferred something phrased a different way.
.
Several of the canon events will remain the same in the upcoming arc while several things will be drastically different. I plan on following the current timeline (including flashbacks as necessary) to help keep my place as I work in my other characters and their character-building arcs.
.
I vaguely mention a parallel between Ichigo's bloodline and Jonas's for being possibly why the two look the same as each other here. This information plays a part in why the two will get to be OP later :D
.
Hope you enjoyed! Please review and let me know what you all think! Thanks for reading!
